How We Heal with Ryan Pink

Serving Others as a Path to Recovery (Jon Giganti)

Ryan Pink Season 1 Episode 42

In this discussion, Jon shares his story and how he learned when he was young ot sweep the difficult things under the rug to keep them hidden. He didn’t learn to talk about difficult things in his life, back then, mental health challenges were stigmatized even more than they are now.

He talks about growing older and playing sports and working, and how he dealt with difficult struggles at home and in life through powering through,  pouring himself into soccer, using drugs and alcohol, but his mental health struggles did not go away.

Jon got a panic attack at work and this was a wake-up call for him. He realized he would have to make some changes, so he developed a path back to healing. HIs book is about the path back and the framework he used to get there.

They discuss the empowerment that comes when learning to run towards the difficult things, talking about them with others and how doing that is part of helping us to heal. The importance of vulnerability is addressed, and the ways Jon embraces it to help others.

The conversation turns to what people can do with their lives, the importance of changing you perspective, and mindsets instead of being a victim and making excuses. Support from family and friends are cited as crucial, as well as routines and choosing what to feed body, mind and soul. Serving others is an important cornerstone for Jon

Finally they discuss steps toward recovery, the first being awareness, the second is stepping into our agency, the third step is ambition and the fourth step is adjustment.
