Will You Survive "The Purge Election Year": Democracy's Darkest Night

What happens when a society normalizes violence as a political tool? In our analysis of The Purge: Election Year, we explore how this third installment in the franchise transforms from simple horror premise into pointed political commentary.
Senator Charlie Roan's presidential campaign promises to end the annual Purge, making her the perfect target when government officials suddenly lose their immunity just weeks before election day. Frank Grillo returns as Leo Barnes, now serving as the senator's head of security, forced to navigate the most dangerous Purge night yet. As the New Founding Fathers of America deploy mercenaries to eliminate their political opposition, we witness the ultimate battle between pragmatic survival instincts and idealistic moral principles.
The film's political subtext couldn't be more transparent, and we dissect how its 2016 release date coincided with a particularly divisive election year in real-world America. From the disturbing church "sacrifice" scene to the questionable concept of "Purge insurance," we break down what works, what doesn't, and what genuinely terrifies in this politically-charged horror film. We debate whether Senator Roan's unwillingness to fight back makes her admirably principled or frustratingly naive when facing enemies who don't share her moral code.
Our conversation veers into hypothetical survival strategies, weapon choices, and whether any insurance company would actually cover Purge damage (spoiler: absolutely not). We also rank all three Purge films we've covered so far, discussing how this particular entry manages to expand the mythology while delivering the visceral thrills fans expect. Whether you're here for the social commentary or the creative kill scenes, our breakdown of The Purge: Election Year offers something for every survival enthusiast.
Introducing The Purge: Election Year
Speaker 1Hello survivors and welcome to another episode of Will you Survive, the Podcast Nice. I'm joined by my two co-hosts. I have here Alex that's me and TJ.
Speaker 2T-Jizzle my nizzle.
Speaker 1T-Jizzle. Stop now, of nizzle Nizzle.
Speaker 3T-Jizzle of Nizzle.
Speaker 2Yo put that in a movie.
Speaker 1Monty Python. We're in a weird mood today. I'm feeling like we watched the Purge Election Year, which, in my opinion, I feel like this is the last one to do for the podcast. But if you guys want to do the other two, then you know. I mean, you guys are more than welcome to, but I'm not going to um, I think, I think it's.
Speaker 2I just feel like this is it. It's gonna be like jeopardy never coming back.
Speaker 1I feel like rules of threes, you know the rule of threes and I'm like I feel like this was a pretty good, like Capper, yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 3Clearly there's anarchy.
Speaker 1It heavily implies that they overtake the government.
Speaker 2I mean, there's literally a movie called the Forever Purge. Seems irrelevant.
Speaker 3I don't know if they should have this could have capped it off like, okay, we're done, we did what we had to do, we, and we elected the right person they were going for, like like once they did this one, they're like, oh, let's do some like prequels and stuff.
Speaker 2But like after that they're like fuck it forever purge.
Speaker 1But like the whole thing about the purge is it's only one night well, at the end of election uh, election year it says that, um, there was anarchy and riots in the street in defense of the. What was that?
Speaker 3the nffa, yeah um, like in defense of the purge. Well, they were the supporters of the nffa, who were rioting because of the loss okay, I'm not gonna not going to lie.
Speaker 1It got a, I get it. It's politics. They draw from reality in ways.
Speaker 2This came out in 2016. You know what they were referencing.
Speaker 1Yeah, it started getting so overtly political that I'm like, okay, hang on.
Speaker 2So, basically, hillary Clinton is the main character of this movie.
Speaker 1Yeah, that's like A little bit what I was feeling yeah. I was like okay the evil Republicans took over the government and enacted a purge.
Speaker 2These gun-loving conservatives, yeah, fucking same amount of death count as the Clintons too, Anyways.
Speaker 1Why are people dying?
Speaker 2around her mysteriously Whoa whoa. This is not a political podcast.
Speaker 3You cannot prove anything about that. Just because people decide to commit Arkansas doesn't mean anything.
Speaker 1Okay, I want to beef about this again and I'm going to beef about this forever and it just kind of is what it is. Who are we fooling? Who are we fooling by saying stuff like that unalive, who is? Fooled six-year-olds know what we're saying tiktok is fooled they know they leave us alone.
Speaker 2It is so ridiculous over through the government, over through the Overthrow the government, overthrow the government Overthrow the government Great.
Speaker 1Well, now that the president's watching hello.
Speaker 2Hi Mr Trump.
Speaker 1Can I?
Speaker 2have a small loan of a million dollars, like you did, so I can really step up my game.
Speaker 1And by step up my game I mean blow it on video games.
Speaker 3I don't know if I want to pay the taxes on a million dollars. I would love a grant for a million dollars for this podcast.
Speaker 1Are grants taxable?
Speaker 2Yes, I would like a savings bond of a million. I would like a money order of a million dollars, please.
Speaker 1I would like cash A million dollars.
Speaker 2Can I have a million dollars?
Speaker 1in zimbabwe money? Oh well, how do you have like an offshore account? How does that even work? Yeah, how does that work. What is that?
Speaker 2today we're learning how to go on text because on purge night.
Speaker 3I'm going to do this if, I if I set up a whole fucking offshore account purge night yeah, if I had an offshore account, I wouldn't be sitting here doing a podcast I'm saying how does that?
Speaker 2stuff even work you send it to your cousin. And what is that?
Speaker 3zimbabwe you have a lot of money and you talk to the right people and say how do I shield this from taxes? And they say so what we're gonna do isn't strictly legal.
Speaker 1It's not illegal as long as you don't get caught well, I think you could say that about any illegal activity so like, for instance here's an interesting little conundrum you know that filing your taxes is mandatory.
Speaker 3You must file your taxes. If you don't file your taxes, you have committed a crime.
Speaker 1Yes.
Speaker 3You cannot pay, Don't have the money? Let me set up a payment plan and they'll say sure, because we're going to tack on interest and penalties for making those payments.
Speaker 2Hey guys, guys, big thing the Purge Election Years. The movie we watched this week it was such a great movie. Wow, you know it was the Purge.
Speaker 1Okay, I guess we can actually talk about the movie. Okay, so main character guy is back.
Speaker 2Yep.
Speaker 1That guy was cool. For the first five minutes of the movie I was like is that actually him? It is, it's him Leo. Barnes.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1Frank Grillo. Pretty sick, frank Grillo.
Speaker 3I knew immediately Is he Hispanic.
Speaker 2I said Is it Grillo?
Speaker 3Grillo, that's what I thought. He looked like a white dude.
Speaker 2Yeah, he looks like one of those like Very tanned, like If Eric was outside for a little longer.
Speaker 1He has an Italian look. I'm outside all the time.
Speaker 3No a little longer than you actually are pretty tan. You should see my tan line. You actually are pretty tan, dude, you should see my tan line.
Speaker 1It is insane. When my shirt is off. It is insane.
Speaker 3Because I have always been significantly darker than you and you are catching up.
Speaker 1Damn, you are catching up like damn right here. You could definitely from my neck to my. Yeah, you could tell so pasty on my chest.
Speaker 3Second character, senator charlie roan yeah, hillary clinton not a fan not a fan.
Speaker 2I am a fan because she's hot, nope wait, why not a fan?
Speaker 3I would smash All of the things like in principle, she was right, but once again, you have to ignore the fact that all of this is actually happening. Let me say it this way she was an idealist in a real world, and that doesn't work.
Speaker 1Yes, I do.
Speaker 2You know what else doesn't work.
Speaker 1What do you mean?
Speaker 2A fucking independent candidate. When have we ever gotten?
Speaker 3one of those never an independent candidate she was an independent oh yeah, that doesn't that.
Speaker 2That, that's the. That is the most like. You gotta suspend your disbelief for that, more than the actual purge okay, but okay, but it's true.
Speaker 1Keep in mind, though, that I do think that, with a day where murder is legal and everyone is in the streets trying to kill each other and this is happening yearly, I think after well, it was 18 years or longer, I think after that, um, I think the country is hurt and, I think, definitely extremely divided, to a point where I I could see that being a lot more likely than in today's completely.
Speaker 2I wanted to bring up is at the very right at the beginning of the movie. Spoiler guys, you should go watch it, but um no, it's old enough.
Speaker 3It's not within the two-year time limit.
Speaker 2Two years we've got to give spoiler alerts.
Speaker 3They've had plenty of time to go watch it.
Speaker 2True, mrs Hillary Pimpin.
Speaker 3Whatever her name is Chapel Roan whatever the fuck, her name is Charlie Roan.
Speaker 2Her family is being held at music point. Motherfuckers just sitting there listening to music.
Speaker 3They're all beat up on the couch, tied up right.
Political Undertones and Critique
Speaker 2And then he's like, like, let's play a game. Um, what do you say? Mommy's favorite, or some shit, I don't know. Um had the mom pick who survived the night. She clearly picked herself. Well, no it she, because the roan was the daughter. So the mom was just like, yeah, save my daughter, fuck you oh my god, I'm kind of stupid. I'm kind of stupid. You thought she was the mom.
Speaker 1Yeah, I mean, yeah, I get it, I was like, oh, she must have been a young mom, and like 18 years later she decides to get into politics. She's like late 30s or like early 40s, but yeah, that doesn't really fit too well.
Speaker 2But yeah, she picked, that's so fucked. Imagine the son's last thought yeah, he's just like damn.
Speaker 1Are you?
Speaker 2fucking kidding me.
Speaker 1It's like eh, I'm pretty sure he looked older than her.
Speaker 2Like damn you kidding me. It's like I'm pretty sure he looked older than her. Like damn okay, yeah, youngest really wins in this situation.
Speaker 1I guess that kind of goes back to something we said in the very first purge episode where we said, um, or alex, you were saying that you don't think society would function after the purge. Like how could you see your neighbor who kidnapped you and did that and not want to kill?
Speaker 3him.
Speaker 1Yeah, you know, there's no way so I think it's a lot like very plausible that an independent could win. Uh, because I think a country so hurt and divided by by this um would be looking for any sort of change I wouldn't have voted for the purge is halloween for adults that was a crazy quote from like what the heck so I get it I get it that in this, in this world, in this universe, everybody is I would say the majority are we've used this word a lot, so it doesn't mean as much but the majority are desensitized.
Speaker 3Yep to the purge, which I think ironically mean as much, but the majority are desensitized to the purge, which I think, ironically, we've desensitized the word desensitized. Unironically so in this universe, more people were willing to purge right, so it seemed to get more and more people were doing it, especially after 18 years, especially yeah.
Speaker 1But also no, seem to get more and more. People were doing it. Well, especially, yeah, but but also no, because remember they said, um, the whole reason the government trucks started was because people weren't purging enough. And the government kept saying, year after year, oh, record high purge numbers, even more people are purging even more. And the anti-purge groups were saying, no, they're not, they're sending out government trucks, they're hiring people, foreigners are coming to participate in the purge.
Speaker 1So these aren't record high purge numbers from Americans. We're just being slaughtered in the streets, and so that's what I think the argument is on both sides.
Speaker 3Well, that part makes sense. The thing that aggravated the hell out of me was in every in every, we watched two others in both other movies. They said uh, level four weapons and above are banned and did they say that this time I don't recall them saying it, I think. But they also didn't say like hey, it's okay, use whatever you want, because essentially they're basically just saying all out, war fuckers oh my god, the guillotine yeah the guy has a freaking helicopter and um minigun, a gatling gun, attached to it. Yeah, that's, that's bullshit.
Speaker 1So really quick the guillotine, as long as the blade is sharp. Terrifying, horrifying way to die, not a painful way. Okay, as long as the blade is sharp the.
Speaker 2The painful part is watching your ass get drugged to it like you just get yeah, fucking, yeah, I'd like the fear look down this and they had lighting on it. They're like we want to see.
Speaker 1Yeah, that was crazy, the cinematic like they're dragging you down a goddamn fucking, but it was a show. Remember, like um it. Later, when they escaped the house and they were running and they had to cross that saw blade that was going back and forth pendulum that yeah, that pendulum blade, and they're like oh, you got away safely, all right, have a good night. Holy crap, that's, that's dark that's kind of like borderlands type shit. Shoot me in the face, yeah and the other.
Speaker 3The other thing that just made me absolutely irate was the senator struck me as self-righteous, and when politicians were made unimmune and her dumb ass is like no, I'm staying home like bitch. Seriously, you know they're coming after you. This is not an issue of my moral standing, is no, you're not being moral, you're being dumb it would have definitely came after anyways, though, but yeah, but here's the thing like so where is she gonna go otherwise?
Speaker 1well, they had a safe house. They had a safe house for her gotcha, I don't know. Well, they, they had a traitor anyways yeah, but I.
Speaker 3But I think when it came to the guy's plan, it was more like he was in control instead of there's too, many open spots on her house.
Speaker 1Yeah, okay, that's fair.
Speaker 2She threw the whole fucking plan into, like she threw it in the fucking trash.
Speaker 1I think yeah, no, I agree with you. I think she was being. She was concerned about the vote, which is what she said. She was saying that if she goes into hiding they'll see her as a coward and they won't vote for her, which I don't know. If you're anti-Purge, it kind of makes sense that if the government suddenly says, hey, everybody's free game, that you would go into hiding because you're clearly being targeted. I don't even think you have to be a government official to look at that and go. Okay, that's so obviously.
Speaker 1All of a sudden, on the election year, when this person who's getting a lot of votes one point behind in the polls and all of a sudden you're going to pull the rule that those officials are immune. You're clearly targeting her. It's just blatant at that point. So I don't know.
Speaker 3Which I'm no better than any other purgers in the comfort of my own living room watching this movie. I'm no better than any other purgers because I flat out was saying go after them, why are you not? I was happy when the militia were like oh, we're going to creep in under the church, we're going to open up this tunnel, we already opened it up. We're going to just creep in and they're not going to even know we're there.
Speaker 2I'm like yeah, get them.
Speaker 3And she's like no, that makes you no better than them. I was angry. I was like are you freaking serious?
Speaker 1Yeah, because it's like they're not going to play fair. They aren't, but it's kind of like I don't know, it's a little complex, because it's like the purge was enacted legally, so now it's like to go against it is to go against the quote, unquote the will of the people, right. So because it's just a straight up revolution and at that point you got to understand that you are just a revolutionary force. You're going to kill some people, you're, you're, it's going to have to.
Speaker 3It's war, especially because you know they're coming after you yeah, at that point is it really assassination or is it self defense?
Speaker 1there's people dying all around her and she clearly feels horrible about that. But doesn't take the, she just doesn't have the balls to strike back.
Speaker 3Yeah, that's really what it comes down to, and that's why it is war yeah, you, you have to strike.
Speaker 1You can't just let them hit you and pull away, because what ended up happening is she won, but now there's riots in the street and there's anarchy, and I don't know At what cost.
Speaker 2Yeah, it should have been the first movie, this movie and then anarchy. I feel like that would have worked better, like with titles, wise, you know. Oh yeah, that's pretty good.
Speaker 3I feel like it's more of a setup for anarchy yeah, I think that's a little uh did anarchy take place after this?
Speaker 1no, no before it was.
Senator Roan and Security Issues
Speaker 3We watched them in a chronological order. The next one is a prequel and then the forever purge is after this.
Speaker 1So I'm just gonna talk shit the forever purge.
Speaker 3Is congress overriding the forever purge? Is the court overriding the president telling the president he can't end the? She can't end the forever purge? Is the court overriding the president telling the president he can't end the? She can't end the purge?
Speaker 1yeah, that would be. What if, what if it's just a really boring legal? Political legal movie, just all lawyers and courtrooms and that's why it did so and they don't even try to spice it up.
Speaker 2It's just really boring litigation. Yeah, it's literally just people talking and and then once again, your honor.
Speaker 1It's clear by the evidence here that the 34 counts the part that also annoyed the hell out of me.
Speaker 3I don't know if I'm alone on this, but those anarchist girls come pulling up in their light covered car blasting, m blasting Miley Cyrus and saying we're going to get our candy bar and threatening the shop owner and the boy, Are you going to say just shoot her?
Speaker 1Why? Yeah, just shoot her. Why why?
Speaker 2are you?
Speaker 1Why did you shoot her ear? Yeah, no, you don't shoot at someone unless you're willing to shoot them.
Speaker 3You better be shooting them.
Speaker 2That was just the dumbest thing. Why do you let them come back for you? No, yeah, I would right there. I also lit them all up. Why would you not like yes, I get it, you're just the shop owner, you know. But invest in some like steel or something.
Speaker 3Get some scrap like make, make a fucking purge day, shit you know he did, though he had remember it took him chainsaws to get through still there's.
Speaker 2there's. You could, but they weren't chainsaws to get through. Still there's, they weren't chainsaws. Stop that, buzz saws.
Speaker 3They were like circular saws. They were freaking, meant to go through that shit.
Speaker 1But at the same time, he thought he had purge insurance Right, which? So okay, let's talk about that.
Speaker 2Kind of reminded me of.
Speaker 1No, there is no such thing as purge insurance in this world. I get there's zero percent chance. There is no profit to be made on that. It is only a loss and it is horrible losses. No insurance company I guarantee you, every single insurance company, if this was real, would say purge night is exempt from all policies. We will not cover a damn thing that happens on Purge Night Legally, they don't gotta do shit.
Speaker 2It's fucking the Purge, that's right. All crime is legal.
Speaker 1Yeah, it was all legal.
Speaker 2Oh, my god hold on?
Speaker 1There's no way. Purge Insurance is a thing. How, how Run me the?
Speaker 2numbers.
Speaker 1You could literally like Burn your own shop down Insurance fraud yeah.
Speaker 2Insurance fraud would be so rampant it would be legal and yeah, and it happened during the press.
Speaker 1My house blew up.
Speaker 2I need you to pay for it, fuck yeah, there's no such thing.
Speaker 1Just absolutely I'm that. To me that's the most frustrating part about the movie. I'm like no, that just I'm sorry. You could have given me any other reason why he would have stayed and that's fine, that's fine by me, but that one is a bad reason so you make fun it.
Speaker 3But you actually wanted to see the legal drama series of the Purge of lawyer going after insurance adjuster. I actually Line item 34C states that you must cover all incidents under the Purge when enacted between the way that I would watch a full Netflix limited series about the legal implications of insurance fraud in the Purge, and then they make it like a mockumentary, you know.
Speaker 1Yeah, that would be, so I would totally watch that. Just a full legal drama, like a full limited series legal drama about the implications of insurance fraud during the first they have it.
Speaker 2So it's like it's a mockumentary on, like if it was real type beat. You know Like they treat it as if it's real and like Absolutely, yeah, like if it was real type beat. You know like they treat it as if it's real and like absolutely yeah, like the office, yeah, yeah. I'm doing it. Yeah, dude, that'd be sick. We got to be very funny, we got a copyright.
Speaker 3I'm making one.
Speaker 1Um can I really? Derail us to something that is not the purge at all, it's just because it's on my screen is a woman in like a kind of old outfit and her eyes are closed and she's like mid saying something. It's from the show Black Sails. It's a pirate show. Love this show so far.
Speaker 2I'm only like three episodes in. I really did not fuck with pirates when, like the whole Pirates of the Caribbean thing was happening. I was just like ew, love pirates, gross white people.
Speaker 3And then like I ended up watching it all in uh 2020 and now.
Speaker 1I really like pirates of the caribbean and I'm kind of pissed what they do, yeah pirates are so fascinating to me in a somewhat similar way to vikings, because they're kind of pretty much the same thing. But pirates are very interesting to me. But when people present like, oh, would you ever have wanted to been a pirate? No, yeah, absolutely not.
Speaker 3No have you ever? Have you ever heard the term outlaw? Yeah, you know what it actually means maybe not what you're outside of the protection of the law, which means if you're an outlaw and you come into my area, I can do whatever I want and the law can't do anything to me because you were outside of the protection of the law.
Speaker 3Now you know all of the piracy comes under, and this is a big conspiracy theory. That's why I'm bringing it up. Conspiracy theory states that the Knights Templar were, and they were betrayed by King Philip of France and Pope Clement V. The rumor has it the conspiracy theory is that several, many, many, many Knights Templar had fled. A lot of them were very well trained, not only in swordsmanship but also in sailing. So you're outside of the law. What were pirates? Commonly referred to Outlaws, and they were excellent swordsmen. I wonder if the Knights Templar were the pirates.
Speaker 1So that's what Assassin's Creed Black Flag says.
Speaker 3That's what I know and I love that game.
Speaker 1Black Flag is honestly one of my favorite games. So the only reason I haven't re-downloaded Assassin's Creed Black Flag, which I have been considering doing, is because I've been watching this show, black Sails, and it's kind of giving me my pirate fix. But TJ hear me out on this. Kingdom Come, deliverance 2, sales, and it's kind of giving me my pirate fix, but tj hear me out on this uh, kingdom come, deliverance too, but pirates thoughts yes, I would play the crap out of that game also there's a whole anime about pirates.
Speaker 2It's called one piece. Yeah, not if you do. There's an anime for everything, eric, if you do assassin's creed.
Speaker 3Black flag, I, I'll play that. I'll play the hell out of that.
Speaker 1The problem is that, like a lot of the great games in the past, it's starting to show its age. Graphics yeah, both graphics and some gameplay. Ultimately, it's still a great game.
Speaker 2Black Flag still holds up way better than the older ones do. I've played all of the Ezio collection.
Speaker 3Yeah, well, yeah, those are really old Did you ever follow the guys who did the Assassin's Creed jump?
Speaker 1Oh yeah, I did. Was that amazing, or what? Yeah, he did way higher than I ever would have done.
Speaker 3Several low, and then he built up, built up, built up, and then went for it.
Speaker 1Yeah, he did a genuine one and it was pretty fucking cool that was, that's awesome. It makes me want to try it, but I don't have that kind of athleticism so there was a little uh front flip a little bit there's a little plug for uh.
Speaker 3Will you survive gaming right there?
Speaker 1oh yeah, if I ever play that game on that channel.
Speaker 2But I, I could record myself playing it, but I love that.
Purge Logistics and Weaponry
Speaker 1So Kingdom Come, deliverance 2, let me give you a little background on that is basically like a somewhat realistic medieval RPG. So you play as a knight who is like the I guess like security guard. You're the escort for a prince and then you guys end up getting separated. He storms off because he did something stupid and you kind of scald him. He storms off and then you're kind of left on your own in this random village and you kind of you got to figure out how to get back to him and because that's your job, um, so it's like this kind of medieval, somewhat realistic survival rpg and I think that. But pirates would be so fun, the sword fights and gunplay would be fun, um, so you know, any investors out there? I don't want to do it, but any investors or game developers out there? I'm looking for something like that.
Speaker 1I don't trust game developers, not, not like Sea of Thieves, not like Sea of Thieves, no. I mean literally like Kingdom Come, Deliverance 2, but Pirates Gamers.
Speaker 2It'd be great. Stop pre-ordering shit.
Speaker 1It's not helping.
Speaker 2You just encourage them and then all these goddamn companies coming out with betas. Please stop Release a whole full done game.
Speaker 1I'm okay with betas.
Speaker 2What I don't like is, like the If it's a AAA game, it should not have a fucking beta. It should not have an open beta. You can have a closed beta if you want.
Speaker 1Yeah, I agree.
Speaker 3No.
Speaker 2I agree, indie games Fine, go ahead, because they're working with small teams of one even, you know.
Speaker 3So yeah, Sure small teams of one, even you know.
Speaker 2So yeah sure, do a beta, but fucking battlefield. Why does battlefield have a beta?
Speaker 1yeah, well, battlefield has a bad history of, uh, awful launches yeah and slowly but surely gets better every time why that sucks? Because like they have some of the best trailers ever yeah, because they put all their money into that and then they're like we'll just release the bare bones that we have.
Speaker 3That is clunky as shit, and let our game players complain to us about what needs to be fixed.
Speaker 1Yeah, and then we'll just fix it as we go. And then a year later it's in a playable state and you're like when they've come out with three more.
Speaker 1Yeah, no, but I agree with TJ on that. They need to just take their time and make a freaking good game Baldur's Gate. It's unfortunate because it took them an absurd amount of years to make that game, which I'm not judging them at all. I can't make a game, but compared to a AAA studio who makes a game every year, it took them over a decade, I think, to make this game. But it's a masterpiece of a game.
Speaker 2It's incredible, yeah, and like thoughtful people working behind a game, then they actually right.
Speaker 1Yeah, great it it put all the triple a studios to shame and there was so much hate from them on on to boulders gate three. Uh, like a lot of the triple a studios were talking crap and all the gamers were like no, you're wrong.
Speaker 2This is just a great game. You're just upset that you suck. Even I was like yo, what the fuck is a Baldur's Gate dude? And then I played it and I'm like this is fucking great.
Speaker 1Because Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 were not this at all. Baldur's Gate 3 is crazy. Very fun game, but I'd play a Purge game.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1I don't know if it'd be like a story game.
Speaker 2I don't know how it would work. I feel like story games would probably be better. It's just a battle royale. Battle royale, yeah, it's just really gruesome. It could be a story game leading up to the Purge.
Speaker 1Why not both?
Speaker 2It takes five days to get up to that. Oh my God A story game that leads into a battle royale would be crazy kind of like uh, what was it? World at war with the call of duty, when it leads into the zombies once you beat the campaign yeah, but like you play out, it's all single player up until purge night, right, and then it fucking connects to the internet, drops you in.
Speaker 3That'd be crazy wait, but I have. I have a question which one would you rather? Which one would you rather face? No, which one would you least want to have to face in reality? A clicker or a volatile?
Speaker 2As soon as I hear a clicker, I'm killing myself. Volatile.
Speaker 1Oh man, that's really tough.
Speaker 3I don't know, Actually, actually because, I think a volatile run and I'm not running. Yeah, well, I feel like yeah, but doesn't the clicker run, the clicker will run too but like the clicker is all about you just being quiet.
Speaker 1The volatile, I don't know, man, because I was thinking that I was like well, you can, you can outrun a volatile. I've done it in dying light, but at the same time you're slowing down with the uv light I can't do half the fucking parkour that he's doing civic up to a fucking second story balcony.
Speaker 1Right, yeah, right I can't jump off a five-story building and land on a honda civic and walk away from that Maybe. I can't take on a Volatile, I think both are screwed Between those two Clicker. I think Clicker, because I can be quiet, if it's any other zombie versus you know. But if it's just that. But if it's a Clicker and a bunch of zombies in there, then no, because I can't be quiet at that point. But if it's just a clicker and just a volatile, definitely the clicker.
Speaker 2Clickers are kind of like slower death angels.
Speaker 3But I'm curious about that because, while they are very much attracted to sound, if you were to take a frag grenade and throw it in where they are, would they go and inspect it?
Speaker 1Yeah, that's a good question.
Speaker 2Yeah, so I don't actually hurt them just to hear it, would it? I feel like I would expect it would the sound but I know they go towards like molotovs and walk straight into the fire, but you're also blasting like shotguns and stuff around it and it's not like it's hurting its ears.
Speaker 1So so here's kind of another thing, though, like as somebody who works with audio. Pretty often I'm pretty in tune with like where audio or where sound waves are bouncing off, and I always find it interesting when I'm hearing something from a different direction than where it's actually coming from, and I I always try to like analyze how the sound waves are moving and what's causing that effect. How, how accurately could the clickers determine exactly where that gunshot is coming from? Let's say, if you're in somewhere that's like a kind of short range echoey, think like a tunnel, how accurately could the clicker determine where that sound is coming from?
Speaker 1when the sound is bouncing off of everywhere.
Speaker 2Yeah, they don't go. Would that not disorient them? They go towards where they think it is and then they stop listen and if they don't hear anything they fuck off. But if it was like in an echoey room, I feel like that would throw them off, you know would that disorient them, do you?
Speaker 3think? I don't think so. I, I, I don't know what, what their, uh, weaknesses are, if that would hurt them but I did have a shank neck yeah I did have a point, uh, regarding the purge election year in. Uh, you mentioned just unloading a shotgun. Did anybody else find it unreasonable for that many people to be carrying that many rounds at all times? I mean, you consider how much ammunition weighs, how much magazines weigh how much, and these people are like loaded for the whole entire night.
Speaker 2Well, if you get the leadless bullets, Leadless bullets Aluminum.
Speaker 1You know, I didn't even once consider that, because movie logic. It's a movie, you know, I never paid attention to when they were reloading, how much they were shooting, how much ammo they should have been carrying on them. This isn't John Wick, nothing like that.
Speaker 2And even John Wick has issues because there's like that scene I agree with you, number two where they're walking through a crowded area and they're shooting, silenced oh, I remember that.
Speaker 1Yeah, and yeah, that's not what they sound like you know, but right, yeah, it was suspended disbelief a little bit and you're like no, you would. You would know someone was shooting two feet from you. Yeah, even with a suppressor, it's a suppressor, not a silencer it was, and that's that's what they always call it.
Speaker 3All it really does is eliminate the uh, the blast, the muzzle flash. That's it.
Speaker 1That's, that's really all it does yeah, I mean, I think it'll make it harder to identify from distance, but not two feet away from you yeah, nerdy's with me.
Speaker 3He says it was like everyone had 30K rounds. That's something in every action movie. You're absolutely right, tj, you have to suspend your disbelief. And overall I got to say I enjoyed this movie. I didn't like the senator's uh idealism in a real unkind world. I agree I thought that they went a little too far with leo's um, with leo's antagonism of her, like he was like the opposite. But there were some points that he made that were 100 right, yeah, they're after you. Someone is after you. You need to follow me. This is my show. Now he's like look, if I don't agree with what I see, I'm gonna speak. I was like oh my god, I are you for real? Are you trying to stay alive or are you like actively trying to get?
Speaker 1yourself. He got shot in the exact same spot, yeah, and stabbed, and stabbed and he got stabbed. That was a cool little choreographed fight. I like that Between him and the very obviously Nazi bad guy.
Speaker 3But what I didn't like about the Nazi bad guy was they already got paid? Why? He said that exact point. We got paid to bring her, not to gift wrap her. Let's go, we're gone. Why was he still?
Speaker 2there, I didn't even think about that.
Speaker 3I thought it was like they were mercenaries to go and bring her back, and that's all.
Speaker 2Yeah for that.
Speaker 3For what? Gets and shiggles oh okay, all right, I could buy that, especially on that night, right? Especially if you're a mercenary.
Speaker 1Yeah, I think it's like you know, getting the scraps of Never mind. It was a bad joke.
Speaker 3Oh, okay, but I mean I kind of want to ask Nerdy, would this be something you would even want to do? It's legal go and just blast. Is that even appealing?
Speaker 2Imagine the amount of PTSD.
Speaker 3That's what I'm thinking of.
Gaming and Media Tangent
Speaker 1That's what I mean. Like you pop a balloon in the purge universe and literally a whole block just starts tweaking yeah, that, that's kind of it's true what I was saying, like 18 years, a country going through this would be so broken and destroyed now real life, pretty much the same.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, go to a mall, pop a balloon people will freak out.
Speaker 1Yeah, yeah, no, this got too real yeah.
Speaker 3I don't know, fucking oof. I don't know. Maybe I can't really argue.
Speaker 1But I don't know. I feel like there's a lot of random loud sounds that people tend to ignore.
Speaker 3I would believe that there would be a lot of cases where people would lose their minds. You would just especially if you got one. You got one person to start screaming and then other people are going to like I've seen it. I've seen it done on horrible, horrible pranks, where people just start running and other people will start following and yeah, especially black people.
Speaker 2Okay, we don't play with you would I? Yeah, no if I seen somebody, right, I don't know, I would run.
Speaker 1Yeah, I don't know if somebody if somebody was sprinting away and it really looked like they're running for their life. I don't know if I'm waiting to see what it is. If I'm like maybe I look like an idiot running away, but on the off chance that a fucking mountain lion comes around the corner, I'm not going to be the guy who's like what's he running from?
Speaker 2No, I'm just going to take your record in. We have to investigate.
Speaker 3I wouldn't recommend not. Okay, so I'm not telling you that I wouldn't end up running, but if I just see someone running, I'm really going to want to know what are they running from. Do they know what they're running from? Are they running toward the danger unknowingly? Why are they running? Did I hear something? Right now? It's at that moment that you need to collect your wits and be smart about your next move, instead of just bolting, especially like we're talking about the mall. If I were to hear a loud noise and I didn't know where it was coming from, that's very likely, right, it would be very echoey in a mall and I just saw people running. I don't think I would necessarily follow the crowd. My my first reaction would probably be because I have kids young kids move into a store and block right barricade and get to the back instead of trying to outrun Right in the back.
Speaker 2They got some heavy weapons back there, Big heavy weapons, Big heavy weapons.
Speaker 3I have not been in a Spencer's in so long, I don't know what you could possibly be talking about.
Speaker 2We're talking about dildos Big ass dildos.
Speaker 3Oh my lord.
Speaker 1And bums and huge veiny dildos.
Speaker 2And some penis pumps too.
Speaker 3Nerdy. Okay, this guy, you know what I just I'm flabbergasted at your response. Pump your penis.
Speaker 2Those are in malls.
Speaker 3I asked Nerdy if he wanted to participate in the purge right If he would ever want to do that. And his answer is the most fucking wholesome thing for us in the military.
Speaker 1I swore to protect my country from all enemies, foreign and domestic man nerd I, I, I love you that's awesome, so he's a part of the resistance that is awesome, that's a great answer.
Speaker 3But you know, you know what I, what I was after some ammunition here Also.
Speaker 1That would be crazy to say that that would be insane to release all the restrictions, Actually even the original restrictions of level 10, whatever that means.
Speaker 3Level 10 officials are immune.
Speaker 1I'm guessing it meant like that means the whole military is allowed to purge with military weapons and military gear.
Speaker 3Who's to?
Speaker 1stop a B-2 bomber from just bombing a city.
Speaker 2Who's to stop me and a couple thousand people breaking into where they control the UAVs?
Speaker 3But that's what I mean. The weaponry was supposed to be limited.
Speaker 1Oh, that's right, that's right.
Speaker 3Supp supposed to be right, so like. But who's enforcing these rules? Yeah, is, is the military on guard?
Speaker 1and they're like look, you guys are gonna maintain so nobody can get into a nuclear site I think we said this in the last episode, but I definitely think, as the years go on, it would get less and less controlled, as opposed to what you would hope that it would get more and more controlled.
Speaker 3Well, Nerdy answered my question more realistically he would use you as a shield.
Speaker 2What the and you would get fucking 80 rounds into his fucking chest, because Eric is not a lot of meat there.
Speaker 3There's nothing on Eric that's going to stop you.
Speaker 1Use TJ Minus three points to NerdyVet the fuck damn nerdy.
Speaker 2You just lost three points. Fragment the bullets and you're gonna shot more my bones are gonna, are gonna fragment you me. You could use me as a shield.
Speaker 1I'll probably still be alive after the end of it the doctor, the doctor's like it would have been a clean through and through. But now you got bone shards all in you.
Speaker 2You got bone shards in you. I can't go to war. I have bone shards.
Speaker 1I can't go to war. I have flat feet.
Speaker 2They're taking anybody now.
Speaker 3I do kind of like the ending when they got into the church, probably my favorite part of that was the cheesy part, and I bet you guys both thought it was cheesy too, or they're. They're hiding from the uh. The guards who came running back in to blast them around, get down. They duck down right. You hear all this shooting and all of a sudden you hear where you all at what you doing up there.
Speaker 1I like that you know what I thought was more cheesy, what the way the security guards came out, how they all filed in from the sides. I'm like what is this? A video?
Speaker 3game. It was Stormtroopers.
Speaker 1That was a respawn wave right there is what that was.
Speaker 3It was great.
Speaker 1I know AI spawns when I see him what the fuck was that, but you know all in all, I enjoyed this.
Speaker 3I thought that Leo was probably my favorite character other than well, I don't know. I guess maybe Joe is my runner up.
Speaker 1He got shot in the same spot again.
Speaker 3Joe.
Speaker 1No, leo, oh, Leo, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3Joe was my runner up.
Speaker 1Who was Joe?
Speaker 3Dixon right. The shop owner, the deli owner.
Speaker 1Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3Am I not sayingixon?
Speaker 1right, the shop owner, the deli owner, oh yeah, yeah, yeah, am I not saying his name, right? No, I liked his and Leo's banter back before.
Speaker 2I liked the old guy at the start. He's like I'm just thinking of waffles and pussy.
Speaker 1Yeah, that's what I always think about. Really, that guy was so real. He's so real for that. Me too, I like Frank Grillo's character.
Speaker 2I think he's a good little main character to bring in from the last movie.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 3You guys like the crip whistle? I really do think he would make a great fucking.
Speaker 2Punisher dude.
Speaker 3I dug the crip whistle.
Speaker 2I thought that was good.
Speaker 1Yeah, it was great. So funny thing about the crip whistle. I've seen this movie on FX late at night on Grandma and Grandpa's TV, because this is one of those movies that plays on on cable and I specifically remember that scene because I remember turning this movie on at that scene and being so confused what was happening especially when they were like I.
Speaker 1I recognize it. I recognize that it's a cripple soul and I was way too young at the time when I watched this movie, so I'm like I don't know what is happening or what that is, but okay.
Speaker 3That was interesting.
Speaker 1And them hunting down the mercenaries.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1Pretty sick.
Speaker 3I don't know that there's anything. I don't think there's any such thing as a tracing bullet.
Speaker 1Or tracing around.
Speaker 2There are tracers, but it's like they basically light up. No, that's a magnesium flare.
Speaker 3It's not something that you're going to track the target that you've shot.
Speaker 2Yeah, no, not like tracker bullets, but like tracers are a thing where it lights up.
Speaker 3As I understand it, the round gets too destroyed and you can't.
Speaker 1nothing's going to survive that I mean the impact alone would likely destroy, like the impact of the firing pin, and it shooting out would likely destroy any electronics on it, Anything that you have in it that's just nonsense. Yeah.
Speaker 3But that was the other thing, that's movie magic. All of these capabilities that these people have. How do more people not have those capabilities? Hacking is legal. You can hack into the systems and get all the city stuff. Me personally, if I was a hacker, I'd hack in and I'd plant a whole bunch of viruses and worms. So everybody who hacks in gets infected and all of their shit goes dark. Or I'd make all of the cameras go dark.
Speaker 2And the city's screwed after that, What'd you say? I said you know what else is legal in the Purge Dragon's breath bullets. I would go fucking sicko mode with a shotgun with some fucking dragon's breath.
Speaker 1That is horrifying.
Speaker 2Just shoot me fucking.
Speaker 1I genuinely think I would just defend myself and the apartment.
Speaker 2Oh and oh yeah, with some dragons fucking shit themselves, they're like what the fuck is this guy got yeah?
Speaker 3I think so. I think you, you know biggest risks you have. Are they just set your building ablaze?
Speaker 1so that was one thing. When they locked themselves in the apartment, that wasn't this movie, that was last movie. But when they locked themselves in the apartment, that was the first this movie, that was last movie. But when they locked themselves in the apartment, that was the first thing. I thought because of that scene from the intro of the first movie of the firefighter sitting in the house or the building on fire. It made me think that like you're locking yourself in which you know theoretically sounds good, but what if someone just wants to commit arson and kill everybody inside, inside, that's why, I have, but I guess that's just the risk you take yep as soon as somebody comes to my house.
Speaker 2Alexa, it's game time. Lights go out. Fucking sprinklers go on. Dragon's breath. Only thing getting burnt is your insides, buddy. That is horrifying.
Speaker 3Welcome to the jungle fucking playing so nerdy has a good idea for a game that we could play one of our next episodes here which is purge night. It's purge night. You have ten thousand dollars. What do you get to survive?
Speaker 1oh, man, okay, kind of, we don't have to come up with it now. We can, yeah, yeah, we can do that as an episode but talking, uh, talking about that, the, the like little street vendors trying to sell glocks on the side and and stuff like that. That can't be legal.
Speaker 2Ten thousand dollars for the purge before the that can't be legal right.
Speaker 1There's no way.
Speaker 2That's legal ten thousand dollars I could get a shipping container for fifteen hundred.
Speaker 1Bury that bitch under my house, have a little drop in door and I'll just chill and I think I would nine left, I'm chilling I think I would go full defense honestly and just kind of hunger down, try to make myself like kind of like the first movie, like trying to just make yourself real inconspicuous, and thankfully I don't think either of the kiddos here would let some random stranger in. So I think we're fine.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, from the hood I was trained not to do that. Then renna center comes in and takes all your shit. Don't answer this door, for nobody rent to own. No, I would never fucking do that shit, but my mom definitely did.
Speaker 3Well, those are my thoughts, fellas that's what I have to say about election.
Speaker 2Oh I was gonna say overall, guys, what would you rate each of the purge movies out of five and what is your favorite one out of the ones we've watched?
Speaker 1so I think the first one was a five because I I think I'm also just thinking like on its own when it came out, it was very original and very fun and it was a like it was a craze that went around where everybody was talking about it because it was like, oh my god, all crime being legal, for I at the time I think everyone was saying 24 hours but 12 hours, but just it was a really new concept. It was a fun like kind of thought experiment, of like what would happen if that was the case? And anarchy honestly, I'm not gonna lie, I don't dislike anarchy in any way, but I think that's why it gets like a three out of five. I don't dislike it by any means, but I don't think there's anything really all that special about it. I guess it kind of sets up like the whole, that there was starting to be a revolution around it and I thought I that's kind of interesting.
Survival Strategy Discussion
Speaker 1I could argue four, but I think I think three or four. And then election year I think is a solid four In order five, two, four oh you guys are generous.
Speaker 2I love the first one.
Speaker 3It's great I would. Actually I'm not as generous on the first one. I would say four, two, four.
Speaker 2Valid.
Speaker 3Two for anarchy yeah.
Speaker 2What did you guys like about it?
Speaker 3So first of all the the first one, I like the novelty of it. There were a couple of the obvious points that that we talked about in the episode. Please go check out that episode, guys, that we have already released it by the time you're hearing this when I I I analyzed that movie, there were just all of the points and problems that I brought up live. Uh two, what I really did not like about it was the writing.
Speaker 1Yeah, I know we that was.
Speaker 3You guys didn't necessarily agree with me, but I I thought they could have done a much better job. I thought the actors did a far better job than the writers did, and they were given not a lot to work with I kind of felt that about this one too, but not as much.
Speaker 1They got away with it, they got it was. It was just, it was like a novelty at this point there was a lot of times where I was, I don't know specifically uh, joe, that was that his name specifically. A lot of his dialogue was very like just too on the nail you know where it's like. It's almost not believe. It's such like a cliche archetype of a person that it's kind of like unbelievable as a person I completely understand what you mean.
Speaker 3He was having a conversation with somebody, but he wasn't delivering the lines like it was a conversation yeah it was. He was monologuing the entire a little bit.
Speaker 1There were a couple of times he did really well, but yeah, I get your point that, yeah, I specifically about like I understand, like the the store was like his whole life and whatnot, but sometimes the way that he would just approach I don't know if it was the actor or the writing, I don't know which one to blame there, or it really doesn't even matter. But I don't know if we're really like picking it apart and being assholes I'm just going from vibes and storyline.
Speaker 2I feel like it would have fit better if it was first one, then this one and then like anarchy I would have been on board with that I feel like it would have been a better situation because I like the world building in this. You know it adds a lot more than the last one did and it kind of like shows more so and I like, I really like the premise of it, so that's why I give it's five, two, four for me so what?
Speaker 1I'm interested about something they didn't even talk about, um what were other election years like? Yeah yeah, I got gotta imagine that election year would be a really really politically charged time I would say, I would say it wasn't until it was but how could it not be from the very first election?
Speaker 3I like it, just I believe because they paid off and shit possibly, I believe that they had convinced the populace that everybody wanted this, everybody agreed it's good, everybody likes this. This is overwhelmingly popular and while people were not being affected, they were able to say okay. But then, as soon as those people who were just trying to mind their own business you know, hey, if you don't want to purge, you just stay in, don't go out and then they start hiring mercenaries to come in and clear your building and you know, oh, record high purge numbers. And, just like you had mentioned, I think that probably started the uh, hey, wait a minute, you know, I, I know people cause they were doing a good job of eliminating them, but the ones who started surviving, know, lasted out the night like leo.
Speaker 3Uh, that becomes a problem because then they're talking about their story and it's unbelievable. No way, no way. This is such an offshoot. There's no way that that really happened. Then more people are telling their story and it sounds eerily similar. Holy shit, wait, is this real? Are they like forcing the purge numbers by hiring people to come into our buildings and our cities? And I think that would have started the uprising. So we probably joined in on three or four years into the anger.
Speaker 1Yeah, Either way, it's a very interesting concept and I'm glad they decided to cover what an election year would be like in this universe. I think that's a very interesting concept. The other thing I thought that was very interesting and kind of the most horrifying part of the whole movie was the church and, uh, the mass, yeah, the sacrifice there, yeah, what the hell that is just. I mean, that's the most purely demonic thing. How many people they had there yeah, that's just.
Speaker 1There's no way you could sit there, do that and try to claim that you're the good guy.
Speaker 2That is the most demonic thing no, I see nothing wrong with it yeah, that makes sense.
Speaker 1No, I'm joking it's completely justified.
Speaker 2I don't even know what you're talking about that was.
Speaker 1That was pretty brutal. That sickly looking priest, holy Holy crap.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 3Yeah, that one scene. I do got to criticize that scene. That scene angered the hell out of me. You had three people holding guns, holding them in their hands. They weren't slung, they weren't put away, they're ready for an attack. And that priest breaks in and he shoots three people before they get the drop on him.
Speaker 1They had their guns in their hands, yeah.
Speaker 3That was the whole. Thing.
Speaker 1Leo's leaving.
Speaker 3He goes. Are you got this? He goes. You know I got this and he has that rifle in his hand.
Speaker 1I completely ignored that.
Speaker 3I'm like what, come on, dude, how did you let this guy that?
Speaker 2priest is just super fast. Sam's here, I guess In my chat Sam.
Speaker 3Sam.
Speaker 1But yeah, I do agree. I don't remember that because I think by that point I kind of just stopped looking at all the faults and was like it is what it is. But yeah, that's kind of a big oversight.
Speaker 3TJ may not care about this statement, but NerdyVet asks oh, oh, oh. What if the purge is actually after the second coming?
Speaker 2What if Jesus came back? Was like damn.
Speaker 1I don't know.
Final Movie Analysis and Ratings
Speaker 2Leaves. And then everybody starts tweaking out Damn it, we lost our chance. He was going to make it better. God should have given him more chocolate fuck the aliens.
Speaker 3We should, we shouldn't have nailed him up on the wooden cross the first time aliens visit earth and they talk about, uh, talk to earthlings.
Speaker 3Do you do you, uh, have any religions? Oh, yeah, christianity. And oh, that sounds like the guy that that know he comes back all the time. We're still waiting for him.
