Joining me on The VIP Suite today is Aisha Carter, Cathey Fe of Aisha Lux Extensions, Precision Cuts, and Silk Press at IMAGE Studios in Birmingham, Alabama. Welcome to the podcast, Aisha.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Thank you. Thank you so much.

Matthew Landis:

It's so great to have this conversation Now. Tell us about Aisha Lux. How did you come to specialize in precision cuts, silk press and extensions?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

I've always loved cutting, and I always. This is crazy, but I love to see hair grow. So I got into the silk press, because silk press can help the hair grow. But everybody is not interested in having long hair. So I wanted to master being able to cut. And when I say precision cuts, I like when cuts look clean, when they can lay against the head and it just does something for a woman when she wears her hair short but she has a really good cut. But then there's people who want to grow their hair out, but it just doesn't grow that fast. So I made it a point to study extensions and that's how it came about. And those are the three things that I really love doing.

Matthew Landis:

And I've seen your Instagram. You do fantastic work. You're crushing it out there. So, for someone new to your chair, what kind of experience do you hope that they walk away with?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

It's easy for us to do enhance the beauty on the outside, but I want people to come and sit in my chair and feel as though they deserve to look beautiful. So I have a campaign Beauty Inside and Out. So I don't just focus on the outside, I focus on the inside also. So I want them to walk away not just looking good but feeling amazing.

Matthew Landis:

And you add a spiritual element to your work.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

I do, I do. The spiritual element is God himself. I always tell people it's not my salon, it's God's salon, and I have actually orchestrated this salon, my husband and I, in the way that God wants us to. We have a tranquil atmosphere. It's calm, it's peaceful and it's actually named after our son that passed in 2023. He was very quiet, very mellow and he was very peaceful.

Matthew Landis:

So sorry to hear about the loss of your son.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

That's okay. That's okay. Thank you so much.

Matthew Landis:

You've made it a part of your mission to serve women undergoing cancer treatment. So what inspired you to start offering these specialty appointments.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

My grandmother. My grandmother, she had cancer and she allowed me even though I didn't really know what I was doing at the time to do her hair. And one day I was in the kitchen actually, you know, just in school just practicing on her hair, and her hair began to fall out. And when it began to fall out, I was so nervous to tell her and she knew it. And she turned and she looked at me and she said Asha. She said the breast cancer is one thing, but losing my hair is another. So I guess God is going to have to teach you how to do women with no hair. And from that point on I realized how important it is for people going through chemo radiation the way they look is really important. So I wanted to offer free services in the honor of my grandmother, because, even though they may not have hair, it's going to grow back and they still need the care and the motivation in order to fight.

Matthew Landis:

Wow, that's beautiful. I've worked a lot with cancer patients over the years. You know my stepmother went through breast cancer treatment and so I, even though I myself have never experienced cancer. Cancer touches us all at some point.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

It does.

Matthew Landis:

It's such a beautiful thing for you to be able to do this for these women.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

But I love it. I love doing it and I love seeing how they look when they leave, Even those who don't have hair. They feel so much better just being cared for and it gives them the strength to fight on.

Matthew Landis:

Well, thank you.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

You're welcome.

Matthew Landis:

So how do you

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

So being IMAGE Studios really helps with that. Because of the who come in the studio, it's not really really busy as far as a lot of traffic and we have our own individual studio and I create a tranquil atmosphere. So I use aromatherapy, soft music and I have a few other perks so that they feel safe and they feel comfortable and I allow them to choose that along with their package, which is something that I learned from you, but I incorporated it in a package so that when they come they're not just getting a cut, but included in that they're getting aromatherapy. I dim the lights for them so that it can be calm and relaxing for them. So that's one of the biggest ways that I help them to feel safe in the salon.

Matthew Landis:

And how did you get the word out about offering these services?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

So I was actually featured on the local news and then I was honored by the mayor for the city of Birmingham and they put it out there and I was looking for more cancer patients to come in and they did. But not just cancer patients, but other people began to come in and wanted to support the cause, and the way they support is by coming in and getting their hair done, because a portion of the money that they pay goes towards helping the cancer patients. So the local news in Birmingham really helped and IMAGE Studios helped.

Matthew Landis:

You know, I don't know who told me this Maybe it was my mother when I was younger, but I'd always heard that whatever you put out there, whatever you give, you get back tenfold.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, and it's like that for me. Not the money, but when you can see someone who is fighting for their life and see a smile on their face and see them motivated to fight just a little bit longer, there's no money value on that.

Matthew Landis:

I agree, we used to host these spa nights. I used to manage a day spa and once a month we would host patients from the Huntsman Cancer Institute and a lot of the staff were asked to volunteer to work for free and they would always kind of grumble every month when it would come around.

Matthew Landis:

And I don't want to do it and I want to go home and then afterwards and you know the Huntsman Cancer Institute would come and cater this big party. And often we didn't get a big group because you just never know with people that are living with cancer, you know from day to day how they're going to feel.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

You don't.

Matthew Landis:

But hearing their stories and being able to do that was such a gift and you know everybody afterwards was always so grateful and so thankful to have had that experience with these people.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Yeah, so you know exactly how it makes me feel. It just I can't really describe it. It's just something that I encourage anyone that is in the beauty industry. We have something to offer that some people can't get unless we give it to them, and so if we have an opportunity to do that, do it, because you'll change lives like that.

Matthew Landis:

So how has this part of your business changed the way that you view your work behind the chair?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Oh, it has changed it significantly. You know, when I was younger I'm going to be honest when I was younger, it was about getting those heads in there and getting them out of there. You know, seeing how fast you can do something. But with this, working with people who have like cancer, they don't always have time. So the fact that they can come in the salon and I can take my time to make them feel good, it helped me to incorporate that for everyone, to take your time and make this person feel good. So when people come in, it may be a two-hour service, but sometimes I go over, because sometimes people just need you to listen and sometimes people just need you to scrub their head just a little bit longer, because you don't ever know what people are going through, and so I just take a little bit extra time. So it has taught me to value time and give people every minute that they have paid for.

Matthew Landis:

Yeah, you never know what people are going through.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

You don't, you never know, and you know, of course we hear so many stories that we never share because we are the first counselors and therapists. So you know, it makes us appreciate people.

Matthew Landis:

Well, you know, people would always say to me and they still do. You know, being in this business is sort of like being a therapist and I always kind of went no, no, no, no, no, I don't, I don't want that kind of responsibility. But where I think this the similarities are, is that we hold space for people and we give them an opportunity to to be heard, to be seen. And you know, I had a client who, whose whose husband was dying of cancer, pancreatic cancer and she came in one day and, just you know, I just asked her how she was and she just lost it. It was so powerful for me to just hold that space for her because she didn't have anybody to talk to. She said I can't talk to him because he's going through it.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Yes to. She said I can't talk to him because he's going through it.

Matthew Landis:

He's the one dying and I can't talk to my kids because I have to be strong and she didn't have anybody to talk to, and so it was a really humbling moment to provide that space for people. Sometimes and it's a lot for us, it's a lot to take on, but it is really important that we do that for people take on.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

But it is really important that we do that for people. It is, and sometimes I have people who come in and say, asha, can I just pay for 30 extra minutes Because they just want to sit in the presence of peace and quiet, so for us to be able to offer that to them. I mean, how powerful is that?

Matthew Landis:

Yeah, we are so lucky.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

We are.

Matthew Landis:

Some of us, I think, were called to this business for this kind of work, I think.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Oh yeah, oh yeah.

Matthew Landis:

Let's switch gears just a little bit. I want to talk about education, because you have taken my courses. You have taken part in the Image Pro education programs. Yes, can you share how these classes have impacted your business?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

This is mind blowing to me.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

I mean, I'm just, being honest, I have told you before that I have been under a lot of training and I have paid thousands of dollars for certain training. And what Image Studio uses you to give away to us? I was like, why is nobody else doing this? It is amazing. So it has impacted my business so greatly.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

For instance, when I first started, I took your class and you were teaching us how to increase our prices. And so at first I have to be honest I was scared. I was like this dude don't know the clients I have, I'm going to lose everybody. Like this dude don't know the clients I have, I'm going to lose everybody. But you encouraged me. You said no, you think you're going to lose people, but you're not going to lose people. And so I decided to give it a try because I was like well, I'm at wit's end, what else do I have to lose? And I followed your steps on how to increase the prices, how to introduce it to the clients. The graph that you gave us on how we can put our numbers in and it will break everything down for you, and I'm talking about this is stuff people have to pay money for and you're giving it to us for free and I applied it and my income increased about $20,000. And I haven't been there a year. I won't be there a year, until November.

Matthew Landis:

That is the best testimonial I have ever gotten and you shared that with me a few weeks ago in an email and I was like, oh my gosh, we gotta have this conversation because I hope people are getting things out of these classes and sometimes, unless I ask, I don't get feedback. So I was so grateful for you to get that email and so happy to hear that it has resonated and that it works, and I love that. You said and you were honest about your fears about losing business and the fact that you didn't no, I didn't.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

And the ones that did leave. Honestly, matthew, it was okay. It was okay because you also talked to us about the services that we offer to people. Sometimes you go into the business when you're fresh. You just do whatever you can do in order to try and build a clientele, and so I also had talked to you about. I was like I need to niche down just a little bit, and I have already started incorporating that.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Just that, some people I did lose, but because you teach us how to increase our prices and market the correct way, the ones that come in make up for the ones you have lost. And it's not a lot of people that you lose, it's only maybe a few, and most of them will just kind of scratch it out. Well, I'll come every two weeks instead of every week, or every three weeks instead of every two weeks, and I'm like, okay, well, I didn come every two weeks instead of every week, or every three weeks instead of every two weeks, and I'm like, ok, well, I didn't lose the client, you know, but I made space for other people to come in and it taught me how to niche down, so it's all good.

Matthew Landis:

I love it Exactly. That's all just great talking points. Yeah, People are so afraid of losing clients and I've told this story a million times I doubled my prices in an 18-month period because I wanted to lose clients. I was trying to cut back and I doubled my rates in an 18-month period and my clients still wouldn't leave. And so I was like, why did I not do this a long time ago? And we're so afraid to rip off the bandaid. And you know what, after doing this for so many years, what I've come down to people are a afraid to lose clients. B they're also just really afraid of uncomfortable conversations.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

And so.

Matthew Landis:

I talk about pushback. When we talk about raising prices, we're so afraid of getting pushback and in my experience I've only ever gotten. Every time I've raised my prices I've gotten pushback, maybe from one or two people, and they still kept coming in. They just maybe kind of grumbled a little at first and then just got over it. We're letting this fear of this unfounded fear, get in the way of making the kind of money that we really should be making, yeah, yeah.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

And I think part of that, Matthew, is the way that you teach the class, the way you present it to us. Because, like I said, I've taken classes before and they've talked about price increases, but I wasn't going to do it Because I was like they didn't break it down to us. They didn't say you're going to be scared. They didn't say that you might lose a few. They were just like increase it and I'm like dropping this. I'm like I'm not going to do this, I'm going to lose my whole client.

Matthew Landis:

So the way that you bring it, Well, thank you, and you know there is an emotional element to it and this comes in all the time. That sort of makes it a little messy. Is we really like our clients? Most of them, 98% of them they become our friends and so that becomes an uncomfortable situation sometimes. Or we've built uncomfortable conversations, complicated situations, because of our feelings, and so we really have to deal with our feelings around it in order to really pull the trigger. And you mentioned the Raising Prices Calculator, which is such an important tool that was created by our founder and CEO, jason Olson, about 10 years ago. When I got that tool, I was like this is the greatest thing that I've ever been given, and so I love being able to give that to you, to our pros, to really help them take the calculator and really more strategically and mathematically approach raising prices, instead of from this arbitrary sort of emotional place.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And it really. Once you look at how much you think you're making and you put it in there and break it down by the hour, you're like, whoa, I'm not really charging what I'm worth. And when I did that and I saw that I was making like $11 an hour, I was like, oh, no, that's not going to work for me.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Oh yeah, I went ahead and did what I needed to do, so it's a very powerful tool that you all are offering, and I'm going to take them as long as I can.

Matthew Landis:

Well, thank you so much. And that hourly rate is such a key indicator because when you do that exercise and you look at how much you're actually making per hour, per service, almost every pro that I've ever worked with, whether they're an esthetician or a hairdresser or a tattoo artist, they have some services where they're making $35 an hour and some where they're making $125 an hour. So, how come all the services aren't making $125?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

That's the question.

Matthew Landis:

So how do we get those to be more consistent? Well, thank you so much for sharing that, and what advice would you give to other pros who might feel nervous about raising their prices or valuing their time?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Well, you know, Matthew, I'm going to tell them you got to take the class. I've already been telling people, people that come in new to IMAGE Studios. I ask them I'm like, have you joined the classes? Have you taken the beginner's class? And I just told a young man that was nervous about moving there and I told him to take it. And he says that he's going to take it. That's my advice Take advantage of all of the perks that Image Studios is offering, because it is very beneficial and I can guarantee you what you all are teaching. I would definitely tell them you're going to pay money for it. If you go to a hair show or somewhere else, you're going to pay quite a penny for it. And this is offer free and it doesn't. The crazy thing is, matthew, it doesn't just apply to Image Studios. My husband and I introduced some of this to our catering business.

Matthew Landis:

That's awesome. That's amazing.

Matthew Landis:

Yeah, I love hearing that. Well, you know. Thanks again for that plug. It is. One of the reasons that we created these programs is that we saw there was so much skills-based education out there. There's so many ways to do a facial, a haircut, to do nails. There's a lot of really artistic and creative inspirational education. There's very little way in the business and marketing education and, to your point, what I saw out there was so expensive and it often even I was paying hundreds, thousands of dollars for classes that just didn't really fit my business. They were for other types of businesses. They were usually for businesses with employees or big salons or people with receptionists. It just was never tailored to the independent pro, and so we've been creating these programs since 2009. You know, and my biggest overarching goal for you and all of our pros is to help you make more money so that you can have more time and money for the things that you enjoy in your life to have, so that you can have a better life. So I'm so, I'm just so happy.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

So happy, thank you. I am too, thank you.

Matthew Landis:

Matthew Landis:

You've been featured on your local Fox News channel and in local publications for your community work. What did it mean to have that recognition for you?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

I give all glory back to God. But when I told one of the ladies who interviewed me for the mayor, I said, well, I give all glory to God. She said but yeah, god used you and I'm like OK, I felt like I could exhale and say, oh, God it feels so good.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

It does feel good, especially being in the industry this long, to know that somebody recognizes you, because sometimes, being in the beauty industry as a cosmetologist, a barber or esthetician we don't always get the recognition that I feel like we deserve.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Because at the end of the day, we do listen to a lot of things that some people never know about Husbands, never know about Wives, never know about kids. And then to make someone feel good by beautifying them, enhancing their beauty, that is an art. It's an art. And to be recognized for that it means a lot. And not just that, but being recognized for helping other people who are sick, that it really means a lot. And not just that, but being recognized for helping other people who are sick, that it really means a lot. And I'm just so happy that I finally got to a place such as Image Studios that I can be proud of, to be recognized, you know, in a place like this. Because when people look at Image Studios they're like, wow, this is beautiful, so what I'm doing, it matches up in the location where I'm at.

Matthew Landis:

So much heart and soul and thought has gone into every detail here at Image Studios. So I'm glad that you feel that way and we want to make sure that all of our pros feel that way and all of our clients as well. And you said something as well it's nice to be recognized for the work that you've put into it, and I think sometimes people outside of our industry may not realize how much time and effort, blood, sweat and tears that we have put into honing our craft and to getting to the place where we are. We're not just doing a sort of it's not just a service. No, and this is what I say, this goes back to the pricing. You're not paying me for what I do. You're paying me for what I know and you're paying for that heart and soul and you're paying for the school that I went to and you're paying for all the experience. You're paying for all the mess ups that I've done over the years that you don't have to deal with.

Matthew Landis:

It is the truth yeah. But let me ask you this Do you think the industry gives enough credit to beauty professionals who lead with heart and healing, not just hustle?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Oh no, I don't think we get enough credit, but I'm hoping that it will change and I want to be one of those people who help the change I really do. I want everybody to get the recognition that they deserve, because I know that it's a lot of hard, sweat and blood that people don't understand and know about. We're not just out here doing this for fun. Some of us are doing it because we want to change lives.

Matthew Landis:

That's a calling.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Yeah, yeah, it is.

Matthew Landis:

Aisha, what's next for Spalon Suiradal?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Growth I want to incorporate. My husband and I are working on incorporating growth for the salon. I've even talked to the IMAGE Studios about expanding there. I want to make it even more relaxing for clients, because I have seen so many lives change just coming into a relaxed atmosphere. So we're going to incorporate more equipment and more things to help people to relax and feel like they are just worth every penny that they spend and they're worth being beautiful.

Matthew Landis:

You're expanding the ministry.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Oh, yeah, absolutely.

Matthew Landis:

I love it. I love seeing that kind of growth. It just kills me. I love it. You're crushing it. If you could be remembered for one thing in your career, what would that be?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

I would love to be remembered for helping women know that they can be all that God has called them to be. That's what I want to leave here, being remembered as.

Matthew Landis:

All right, let's do some quick fire questions before we go. Okay, how about that Favorite tool in your kit right now? Blow dryer? Which one?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

It's a Ultra 72000, something like that. It was a gift from my aunt when my blow dryer broke in the salon and she paid over $250 for this blow dryer and I swear it seems like sweet air is blowing out that thing and I love that blow dryer. But that's my favorite.

Matthew Landis:

Oh my, I had a whole blow dryer like graveyard cabinet with. Like you know, I was so hard on blow dryers. Let me tell you, blow drying Also just this is a PSA for everyone out there Blow drying is really hard work and really hard on your body. So be gentle. I'm just having a slipped disc issue with my back and it's. I know it's all from shampooing and blow drying. So I'm just telling everyone be gentle, be gentle with yourself, go slower. But yeah, I had a whole blow dryer graveyard and every nine months I was buying a new one. All right, so what's your go-to way to reset or recharge? How do you recharge? How do you fill your cup?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Okay, so don't laugh, but I love my bed.

Matthew Landis:

I love my bed.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

My recharge is when I'm tired and I'm worn out. I want to get a big cup of Honor Palmer tea and I want to put it in my Stanley, sit in the bed and binge watch and after I've prayed and done that, I'm ready. I'm ready for the next day. That's my recharge.

Matthew Landis:

Nothing hard, perfect evening, yes, perfect. Doing nothing is my favorite thing to do. What shows do you watch?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

I love watching stuff, like I watch a lot of Tyler Perry but then I'm going to tell you I can't wait for Bridgewood to come back out.

Matthew Landis:

I don't know what that is.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

It's that Bridgerton with Lady Whistledown.

Matthew Landis:

Oh, okay, yeah, yeah.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

I love stuff like that. I love history.

Matthew Landis:

I love historical dramas. There's this French one on I think it's on Amazon, no, it's on Apple called Careme. It's set during the Napoleon, the rise of Napoleon, and it's about this kind of sexy chef who it's all intrigue and spies and it's pretty cool yeah, oh wow.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

I like it because I get ideas for hairstyles off of old movies.

Matthew Landis:

Oh well, this one is it is. It's a historical drama, but it's got some sexy updates and and really good hair.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

I'm going to have to check it out.

Matthew Landis:

What's one luxury every client deserves, no matter the price point.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Receiving all the time that they need to regroup. That's a luxury, because everybody doesn't have that. So, regardless of how expensive it is, if you can find a place where you can regroup and I'm hoping that it is in my salon studio and more salons like that there's no price on it. There's no price if you can sit back, relax, let all your cares go away and then walk out beautiful too. Who could put a price on it?

Matthew Landis:

You made my whole day. There's nothing more luxurious than time, and you can make more money.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

You can have a lot of things, but you can't make more time you can't make more time. Once it's gone, it's gone. So you need to be in a place where you can get all that you need in that time that you do have, and that's if more salons would incorporate that into their. I mean really valuing a person's time instead of going quick, quick, quick. You'll find your clients will be with you for 35 years, like I have some.

Matthew Landis:

But you got to charge the right amount of money.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

I didn't say don't charge.

Matthew Landis:

You got to charge now Take the raising prices. Classes so you can have more time people.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

That's right.

Matthew Landis:

Well, Asha, do you have any last words for our listeners?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Well, what I would say is, if you're looking to upgrade and you're looking to offer your clients something that is worth their time and money, I would definitely tell you to look into Image Studios. I definitely would tell you that you to look into IMAGE Studios. I definitely would tell you that to look into Image Studios because it gives you a feel of luxury and it gives your clients that, and they will appreciate it.

Matthew Landis:

This has been such a fabulous conversation. Thank you so much for joining me today on the VIP Suite. Where can our listeners find you?

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

Where can our listeners find you? They can find me on Facebook, Spalon Suiradal, on Instagram @spalon_suiradal, and they can also find me on TikTok. I have a page that I motivate people and inspire them, and it's under Aisha Carter Cathey.

Matthew Landis:

Now can you spell Spalon Suiradal

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

I sure can. So it's S-P-A-L-O-N S-U-I-R-A-D-A-L.

Matthew Landis:

Well, thank you again. This has been such a pleasure.

Aisha Carter Cathey Fe:

You're very welcome. Thank you for having me. I enjoyed you so much.
