How far will you go to save the one you love? 2026's "They Will Kill You" is a splatterhouse good time filled with Tarantino-like action and Raimi-style gore. What did Tyler and Max think of it?

SPEAKER_04

Hello and welcome to Poppin' Cinema with Joe Mama and Friends, the podcast where I pop my friends cinema cherries one movie at a time. I'm here with Max and Tyler. Hello, fellows. Hello. What's up? How you guys been this week?

SPEAKER_02

Subpar. I feel like this is a trick question. No, this is breaking the ice. Yeah, why not? Okay. I thought this was gonna tie into some sort of like weird demented thing.

SPEAKER_04

No.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, good.

SPEAKER_04

Okay. So, uh, if you had the chance to make a deal with the devil for immortality and limited wealth, but you had to stay at one place without leaving, would you? Probably not. We mean one place. Like you were confined to this one to one area. Like my house or like your house or like house. But you can never set foot outside of the house, but you'd be immortal immortal and wealthy inside.

SPEAKER_02

I feel like that's basically solitary confinement.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I'm gonna say what do you do with it all at that point?

SPEAKER_02

I mean, you can order stuff online all the time.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Eat so many pizzas and not die.

SPEAKER_04

Maybe.

SPEAKER_02

Probably not.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. I wouldn't do it. So the movie we watched it today is They Will Kill You. It was released uh this year, 2026, directed by Kirill Solkolov and stars as he beats, Tom Felton, Heather Graham, and Patricia Arquette. So what do you guys know about the movie before we start? Nothing. Yeah. Well, whatever you just said. Yeah. But so the premise is a woman looking for a job at a high-end apartment complex finds herself the unwitting sacrifice for an eternal cult for the devil. So go watch.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my goodness. That's that one movie. It's like uh Quentin Tarantino looking thing. Okay. Yep, yep. I just connected all those dots. The second you read that, I was like, hold on a second.

SPEAKER_04

Hang on. This kind of sounds familiar. Sorry, go on with the plot. You're good. Well, I mean, that was pretty much the plot. Alright, perfect. So this episode's like it's gonna be interesting because it was so hard to like write stuff because, like, well, I mean, it's kind of cut and dry, but we'll talk more about kills and stuff, I think, than anything else. Perfect. But so speaking of that, I'm going to now play the trailer and then we'll talk about the movie after it's over. After I hit play on this, I'm pretty sure it's gonna be okay.

SPEAKER_01

The Virgil was built in 1923. Today it's one of the most exclusive buildings in Manhattan. Hi, I'm the new maid. With such wealth comes the expectation of the highest quality of service. A lot of luck.

SPEAKER_00

This building is a temple to say each month to be the sacrifice.

SPEAKER_01

Prison.

SPEAKER_04

And we're back. So from here on out, this will be uh discussing the movie in detail. So this is your spoiler alert. Give me a let me uh give out some titillating tidbits about the movie first. So, in between takes, Tom Felton would attempt to put a smile on Zazy Beats' face after her long intense scrolling filming days. He would bring his ukulele to work and serenade her with a song about joining a cult. Nice. Like that would be something Tom Felton would do. He seems kind of like a maybe people don't know he's Draco Malfour in the Harry Potter movies, but pretty sure everybody knows that anyway. Makes me like him that much more. Yeah, he's been a couple like smaller films lately, but I mean I've seen a Harry Potter films once, so I don't really remember many of them. So the scene where Zazi Beats' character Asia sets an axe on fire was an elaborate one to pull off in order to get it right and make it sure they were safe. The stunt team ran it numerous times, and all the actors, including Beats herself, used plenty of flame retardant to reduce the heat of the fire. And however, she still says she can still feel it sucking up the oxygen.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah, I mean that was a massive fire.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I liked that they did it like practically. Even the boar said, well, the pig's head was mostly practical. I'm like, good for him. Uh filming for the movie took two months, and star Zazzy Beats did not have a single day off during production.

SPEAKER_03

Holy shit.

SPEAKER_04

I mean, they were scene was Serenit. Yeah. So it's like, yeah, sees the main. That's what you get for your first uh starring role. Uh the scene where the cultist sneaks into the apartment of Beats' character uh through a secret hole in the wall was inspired by a revelation at director and code co-writer Kirill Sokolov's former Russian flat. During a kitchen remodel, he discovered a hole that led to his neighbor's apartment. He attested that nobody walked into his apartment, but they could have. That's terrifying. I've heard the stories before, like different like high rises, like in New York. There was one, I think, I don't know if it's real or if like uh one of those uh urban myths, but there was like a woman that was murdered in her apartment, and when the police investigated, like all the doors were locked from the inside, windows were locked from the inside. There was like no like way that they could realize that the killer would have gone in and out. And it turned out that the bathroom mirror was uh they opened it up and there's like a little like uh hole that got into the next apartment, and the guy next door got through that window to the killer.

SPEAKER_03

That's terrifying.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I think I I really think it's a true story, but I don't know. I don't have those here I checked. I checked all my apartment holes and wake-there's nothing here. Alright, so then the director revealed that the complex is something of a metaphor for Dante's Inferno. Uh he says it kind of it represents Dante's Inferno with each floor like a new circle of hell, and as they go up, but actually they go down straight into the heart of hell. If you rewatch the movie with this idea, you actually recognize a lot of uh symbols and elements and portions that give you a small clue.

unknown

Yep.

SPEAKER_04

You can sell that.

SPEAKER_03

I can pick that. Yep.

SPEAKER_04

And then on a budget of 20 million, it made only 19 million worldwide. Aww. Yeah, I didn't. It was not a hit. I enjoyed it. Yeah, okay, I was gonna say, um, where do where your takes on the movie? I thought it was a whole lot of fun.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, for sure. Like, I would seeing this on the big screen would have been fun, but like to call it like to like recommend it to anybody if it I don't know, is it streaming anywhere?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, it's on Max. Yeah, HBO Max or whatever they call it now.

SPEAKER_02

That's like an easy, like, you should watch that on HBO Max.

SPEAKER_03

If you like a fun romp of action and death and blood, it's just a good way to kill an hour and a half. Yeah. It's a lot of fun.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, me and Tyler was saying, like, it's a good length, it's not yeah, overly long, agreed drawn out. It tells the story quickly and gets to the action and more action in the dark comedy. Everything like, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

The camera work, all that. It's all really well done for exactly what they want. They they achieved everything they set out to present, I think. Yep. Agreed.

SPEAKER_04

So at the beginning of the movie, uh Asia and her daughter, uh her sister and daughter, and her sister, they're uh younger and trying to escape their father, who's clearly abusive to them. So as uh Asia shoots her father and then runs off because he was facing arrested, so he didn't get arrested, he got caught. But then Maria ended up back with her father, so why do you think that the courts would allow her to be back with her father? You know, he's so clearly abusive to them.

SPEAKER_03

Would the court be able to identify that? She can't speak for I mean she can speak for herself, but who are you gonna believe? It's he said she said at that point without any evidence or someone to support you. What Maria? Correct.

SPEAKER_02

They would look into it, but maybe she didn't say it. Maybe Maria never said that he was. A lot of times when people are abused like that, they don't actually say anything.

SPEAKER_03

And a lot of times in scenarios such as that, you go back to your legal guard uh legal guardian and it's pretty fucked, actually.

SPEAKER_04

It is very fucked. Because I usually hear that, um I mean their mother died, but in the cases of like those um Cussy battles, she usually goes to the mother regardless. Even if the mother is clearly less capable. So why is why is the system so fucked up like that?

SPEAKER_03

Ask the American legal system. I actually don't, because you'll never get an answer. Well, what do you think? Is there any you have any thoughts on it? As someone who's been through the American legal system several times, it's fucked. Even if you you know are on the end of doing things wrong, it's out to pursue the maximum punishment even regardless of if you are toning your ways or doing the things that you need to do to progress forward.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's a man-made system. Man-made systems have rules in a row. If you can if there's rules, that means that there's a game. And that the best person that wins the game knows the rules the best to where they can either abuse them, bend them, break them. So I think that's just the judicial system at this point.

SPEAKER_04

Yes. Yay. Justice for none. So uh years later, after she gets out of jail, she goes to the uh Virgil to find her sister, but she plays it off as being uh one of the hired maids. So um in her room, she gets the people that come in and they try to kill her, but then she's find out that she's ready for him with uh, you know, sword and uh shotgun and other weapons. So were you surprised that she had all those weapons already ready?

SPEAKER_03

I was curious when she was obviously unpacking her change of clothes after her shower, what the clanking was, and I just made that assumption that somehow she I mean, I didn't think that she was who's at Who's the at. Given the premise of knowing what the movie was about, um like she was obviously going to be prepped somehow. Obviously, it's before the scene in which her confidant reveals to her the information in jail, but like the clanking like what else is that going to be? Like she's prepped in some sort of way.

SPEAKER_02

I actually thought it was a tent. I thought she was like homeless, and like it sounded like the poles of a tent clanking around. Okay. And I was like, Why are you bringing a tent? Weird. And then she like bust out with like a fucking machete, and I'm like, oh, it wasn't a tent. Yeah. It's like, huh.

SPEAKER_04

Katana and all that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I you hear the shing, and I was just like, Oh my god, what are we doing? Yeah, it's just fun from the beginning.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, it was um, so that's like the first big action scene, is when she's fighting the cultists, and they're including Tom Felton and Heather Graham. Um, she cuts off Tom Felton's head and cuts off the guy's le foot and slices his throat or mouth, cut um that attacks Heather Graham and stabs on a guy repeatedly. So what's thinking about that whole scene, like the shots to it, uh how it was filmed and just the overall that whole scene.

SPEAKER_03

The filming of it and the pacing and like just the camera work to like intricately like show and describe each death and like the amount of work that went into like visually presenting that was I think stellar pretty awesome.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I liked how like you it's really easy, like if you're Michael Bay to shake the shit out of the camera and make me want to puke. But like that was like really deliberate camera movement where like it was almost like fluid, like as she was moving from person to person or from corner of the room to corner of the room, the camera was kind of like really emphasizing like if she's going quick, the camera was moving quick, if she wasn't. It was like it kept a really good pacing to it. So you kind of it kind of almost like in your head kind of just ramped up the intensity of the fight.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it it didn't move with the purpose of like trying to make you sick, like it was very cleanly done and very like he said, fluid.

SPEAKER_04

So like I love the scene when um she's on the ground and she sees the bed and she crawls underneath, it's just with her legs moving. Like, that's sick. She kicks up the bed, uh what's it called? Mattress. Mattress, yeah. I said bed sheet, I'm like, that's not right. The mattress and pushes against, and then Heathergram like shoots through it, then misses her, and then she throws the shotgun at her, and she catches it, throws right back at her. I'm like, nice. I love that scene. I'm like, watch I'm like, okay, I'm hooked. Yeah. I'm hooked on this movie already from that. So then I was I was telling Tyler, like, oh, first time I saw this, I'm like, wow, they killed them off already? Like the movie just started, like, what's gonna go on? And then it turns out nope, they're all part of the cultist group that made deals with the devil to sacrifice innocent people so they get immortality, so they're still alive.

SPEAKER_03

See, without your prefacing question, I would have probably been caught off Garden Shock too, but because you prefaced that earlier with the question, I was like, okay, well, yeah. That or where like my first thought was, okay, so like there's so many people, but like if they get murdered, are they still immortal, or like I thought maybe dismembering each person uh each part of their butt, but no, the after the reattachment and everything. I was like, okay.

SPEAKER_04

Well they did say though that they feel the pain of it. Yes. So that's not No, that's not nothing. It's not ideal. You know, you're gonna feel like getting your head chopped off, even though you still live, you're probably gonna feel that pain.

SPEAKER_03

Getting your head exploded, I mean your hit your neck has the most nerve ending, so getting your head exploded by a shotgun or getting it cut off by a katana, I mean.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I thought for a movie too, with like the plot was very like straightforward, like the general plot was very straightforward. I thought like the way it was telling its story was really good. Yeah. The fact that it wasn't like this is an immortal hotel. It was just like a hotel with Satan above it, and you're like, Yeah, what the fuck? And then it's like, oh, she's gonna be attacked in the middle of her sleep, and then it's like, oh, she just killed all these people. It's like they're alive again. So like the story was kind of like telling itself without just being like exposition expositional, yeah. It wasn't like uh chapter one.

SPEAKER_03

Didn't like try to overcomplicate anything, it like very much was on the nose, but told it well.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Oh yeah. So then she escapes into the uh crawl spaces, which me and Tao talk about how like there's like the longest scenes in the movie. I loved it. I loved it too. It feels like um it's my favorite chase sequence I've seen in a very long time. Yeah, I feel like a video game at points. Like when like Pants on, she's like there crawling, and then whoever's crawling behind her is like very small, like the space and everything.

SPEAKER_03

Like, it's like a side-scrolling video game. I see overdone chase sequences in movies that have been done a thousand times before, and like it's a very kind of fun, refreshing take on we're gonna do this in the inside of a hall. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I thought it was really like like it had like those like classic horror elements to it, where like there would typically be a jump scare where this didn't really like employ any of those jump scares, but it was like that that was like the backdrop, like the canvas, but then like the body language, like the big guy just like shuffling around and it was like just so silly, like it was like like such a good blend of just like horror comedy.

SPEAKER_04

It was almost like he was like jumping, like hopping. Yeah, it was like vibrating across the floor. He's a big guy.

SPEAKER_02

He can't I mean and the noises he was making, I was like, what are we doing?

SPEAKER_04

He just got stabbed repeatedly. He's just he healed, but still. I love the scene too when uh she's trying to hear what they're saying, and she moves like the books from the other side of the the uh bookcase, and then like, oh, I hear noise. Open the door, she's just standing there, looks, just closes it again.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I anticipated her to be like gone or something like that. And then it's like no, just she's just standing there with a blank look on her face.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's like uh definitely like it played all of its silliness up very well, too. Like any like subversion I thought would happen, like her being gone, like, nope, she spray here. This is what we're doing. We're just gonna close it again.

SPEAKER_04

Yep.

SPEAKER_02

Well, even when she like pulls her hand through the blade, I'm like, geez.

SPEAKER_04

That was Max's favorite scene.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, like you're watching, well that reminded me kind of almost of Inside, but like you like the it's like just that moment was silly, and then the very next moment is just like this grotesque horror moment, and you're just like constantly like flipping. Yeah, it wasn't even it didn't even feel like it was flip like flip-flopping back and forth. It just felt like itself the whole time.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Yeah. Max loved that scene when she was pulling the her hand down from the machine uh machine. I don't hate body horror, I can just feel it in my body. I don't know. I don't want to bleed.

SPEAKER_02

Mission accomplished.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. So speaking of that, she ends up shooting uh Heather Graham in the face and blows up her head, but then her eye kind of just follows it around.

SPEAKER_02

That was another fun one.

SPEAKER_04

Did you guys get like a sense of uh Sam Raimi sense in that? Yes. Very much so. When she go when her and Ray go upwards and a dye looks up and sees him just like kind of flips himself.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it just sticks to because I thought I was like, okay, this is the end of the journey for the eyeball.

SPEAKER_04

Nope, nope, nope.

SPEAKER_02

He just like flinging himself around.

SPEAKER_04

What's it called? What's those like the slappy hands?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, like the sticky hands. I know what you mean.

SPEAKER_04

Just like on the walls like that was great. Then it got scary because the spider crawled on it, crawled on it. I didn't love that, but I didn't either. I was like, ew, spider. I loved the like how it was getting ready to prep to bite, and then so then she finds Maria and Maria tells her she doesn't want to leave. So we're surprised that she didn't want to leave, and would you have done the same thing if you were in her situation?

SPEAKER_03

I think based on that being their first initial meeting in so long that no, that was not I was not surprised that that would be her like first go-to. Like she has no reason to trust you at this point anymore. I mean, like, yes, the last thing you did was stand up for her, but then the other last thing you did was ditch and run and try and get away. And maybe you had you d if you do get away and don't go to jail, yes, you fight the system to try and get her, but obviously that's not the case of what happened, so you have to re-earn that trust and show her that you are there for her in order.

SPEAKER_04

I mean, she already did enough I feel like she did enough there already to prove that. I mean, she was covered in blood when she got there.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but I thought it was funny when she socked her in the head. Yes, that was I was like, that got me by surprise, not the whole should they be friends or not. I was like, Huh? She just punched her in the head.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, she's one her and the little kid are like one-hitter quitters.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, she punched her in the head, and then the very next scene she's like saving her life.

SPEAKER_04

I was like ball gag in her mouth.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Well, like before then when the kid stabbed her in the back with the screwdriver. That's fine. I was like, you little shit. Ran ahead. She knows what to punch. I mean, she studied in prison.

SPEAKER_02

It was also fun that she like stabbed in the back. Like little things like that, like the little details where she gets stabbed in the back and then she can't reach it. So she has to use the bookshelf to kind of like pull it out of herself.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, or that she forgot, we can see like Linbax. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Like little shit like that is so good.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I loved it. So um, then we get the big flaming axe scene. Uh funny little thing too is that the actress that plays um Maria when the guy that's holding her, like hostage in the room, that's her real life husband.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. That's fun. She did not look like that was her husband. No.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

She acted it very well.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. So what did you guys think about that whole that whole scene with the fiery axe and all the cultists in the ballroom?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it was like John Wick shit. It was perfect. Yeah. Like that was the other thing, is like the choreography, like that very first scene where she's chopping people's legs off and stuff, and then you find out they're immortal. Like just the choreography of like the fight scenes, I was like, so incredibly well done. Like, there's like really cheap, like I don't want to call them out by name, but like Jason Statham kind of action movies. Yeah. Where like the the action just seems so like rigid. Where like here it was like the choreography was very fluid, like dancing. That's like very reminiscent of like John Wick kind of action. So but it didn't it wasn't like um I don't know, it wasn't just like a rip-off or anything like that of John Wick, but it like that like flowy like choreography like action is so good.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I didn't realize in the time because I caught it when she got to the top floor, but that was my Kingsman scene. Oh yeah. In the yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I was thinking. mean have you? I don't think I have no one of the coolest fight scenes ever. Yeah, it's on my list to show you still. Perfect. I love at the end when she kicks the when she flips a table because the guy had the shotgun, she had the table. She jumps on the chair and like slow-mo shoots through the thing and then the people splits is like with the axe right down the middle of him.

SPEAKER_03

Absolutely one of my favorite kills if not my favorite kill. And yeah it was very very cool and well done.

SPEAKER_04

It was so cool.

SPEAKER_02

Then the fire and then the sprinklers come on like just enough flaming bodies to trigger.

SPEAKER_03

Yep. The doctor attempting to plead for his life and she just we're not bad people. Oh I mean okay yeah sure buddy.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. So uh Lily reveals that Maria could become immortal if she sacrifices Asia at the end. So considering their tumultuous relationship was there a part of you that thought she would do it?

SPEAKER_03

No. No. Not given where we had traveled in the movie at that point.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah it seemed like it seemed like everything was working out. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

As well as it could inside of a satanic hotel but yeah yeah because I mean even when they talked before and she said I didn't want to go with you had Asia had then just decided to leave at that point and leave her there she would have died anyway. So I mean at that point she had made her decision to be with her sister and like work with her so fun question.

SPEAKER_04

Would you do it to one of your siblings for the same deal kill myself or my sibling kill your sibling for immortality.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah probably no probably not my siblings have families though so it's like I feel pretty poopy I'm an only child so I couldn't really tell but I probably would do it.

SPEAKER_03

Well it depends what the immortality is depends on your siblings too also yes that's my case yeah they're not the dopest you might have differing opinions yeah yeah so what'd you guys think of the pig's head being uh the uh vessel for Satan what is it about pigs that most people associate with the devil goats are overdone I guess say nine times out of ten I suppose it's goats or pigs because I mean like even going back to something as early as Lords of the Fly or Lord of the Flies like not that that represents Satan but like that represents like the child's like inner beast and inner like that so it's been used as representation since then and probably even before then but like as soon as I saw the boar send it I was like oh this is some Lord of the flash shit so yeah not to generalize all pigs because maybe there's someone listening that has like a pet pig and I'm gonna say something that's gonna offend them. Little teacup pigs.

SPEAKER_02

But in general like feed pigs if you've ever been around them especially males like when they're like ready to breed they're incredibly violent. They're also incredibly intelligent and they like they if you were to like just like look at the seven deadly sins they're covering pretty much all of them like just like their nature a male horny pig is like it will like kill other pigs for no reason it will like it it is like a pretty brutal animal so like there's probably something there. And also there is like this whole like unclean meat thing in like most like like the Abrahamic religion so it's there's a lot of probably that going along with it too.

SPEAKER_04

I was gonna say it's because of that it's the very the Christian belief that pigs are unclean animals and then also in the gospels there was a scene where uh Jesus delivered demons thousand people and there was about two thousand pigs. And so the demons asked Jesus like can we go into those pigs and he's like yeah yeah so they went to the pigs and they all jumped off this cliff so I was like oh I mean I like pigs. Goodbye pigs.

SPEAKER_02

I like bacon it depends on the pig. Like I said like there's like potbelly pigs that are cute and kind of fat and stupid well they're not stupid but like then there's like actual like breeding bacon pigs and I'm like I'll punch you in the head.

SPEAKER_03

Teacup pigs teacup pigs are cute.

SPEAKER_02

I'm sure they also heard pigs are good uh good animals to get rid of bodies with I've heard that as well isn't that like a Hannibal Lecter thing.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah yeah so yeah they're very useful. Pig flesh is also the closest thing to human flesh I don't think that has any pertinence but fun fact.

SPEAKER_04

Well I mean the pigs had had all the people's names on them. Yeah so like if you name a certain on you were immortal. So that's when uh Maria goes up to write Asia's name write uh her name to kill Asia then she writes Asia's name and kills herself to give Asia the immortality to kick everybody's asses and again everybody's immortal so you just keep you know keep beating each other to death without dying.

SPEAKER_02

That was a fun like you usually like I like my movies to end and crash and burn and make me sad but like that was like a that was a happy ending that like was actually like well written.

SPEAKER_03

I I feel like the fun twist I feel like Satan would have like yes she asked for her sister back and said yes a life for a life but like I feel like her changing her name to his sister is Satan would probably be like yeah no even I follow the rules.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah so well that's like so what do you guys think about that last scene when uh Sidicon see that was just a boar's head and uh bleach and sets on fire so all the names get erased so everybody that died died for real. I think it was very very cool and that's what I knew that that as soon as she said I think we can do better than that that that's the gimmick and the plan and then the boar's head screaming at Sits on fire being pushed down and the cart down the elevator and blows up for some reason.

SPEAKER_03

I think the her actual fighting of Satan when she was attached or when it was attached to Lily was really cool too the just the fluidity of like the body movements of the sword fight and everything.

SPEAKER_02

Yep. Just you talking about the pig's head falling down and then exploding made me think of the other person who like fell down and the body just exploded and I was just like Yes. Yeah or the cleaning I have questions but yes.

SPEAKER_04

Yes or the cleaning girl that's down the cleaning with falls up and she explodes too and I'm like okay's been killed twice already today. Now she's dead for real. So speaking of that Patricia I actually met her at the one convention and asked her about that scene with the boar's head like so did she really wear the boars head in fighters like oh heck no that was a stunt double I couldn't do that. It's like but the she's like but the boars head was real but the movement was CGI but she's like no there was an actual plaster bolt of the the pig's head that the lady the it was the stunt guy actually that wore he wore for her I'm like impressive but it just said that was her when uh she hits her and she goes flying and it's like the slow mo see her flying yeah into the uh uh the stick that it was it's like oh that was attached to these like pulleys and just pulled me over it was so much fun I'm like oh cool that's pretty cool it's it was cool to meet uh so speaking of her actually do you think Lily was a terrible person or someone who took a deal in order to save herself and her husband I think after it had gone on for so long and her husband was revealed to have a conscience that she was kind of more terrible because he obviously has tried and it was not getting through to her I think the path to hell is paved with good intentions.

SPEAKER_02

Yes. So there might have been good intentions initially like even how her husband I can't remember his name for the life of me. Ray Ray. Ray great memory the the five questions at the end's gonna be bad for me. I'm gonna lean on Max but uh even he was like oh yeah well we're like doing the Dexter shit where we're like yeah we're just sacrificing scummy people but now we're like killing innocent people it's like yeah like okay you're saying they're scummy people but that's like someone's son or someone's daughter. You know like it's easy to like paint someone as the other and then kill them. So it's like if you're willing to do that then like it's a slippery slope I guess to just murdering poor minorities. But also she he at least came to the realization I think eventually where to Max's point I she never I think maybe it was like a point uh like at the in initially it was like an us versus them and then when she realizes it was no longer like him and her it was like okay well then it's a me versus them. She was really easy to drop the us.

SPEAKER_03

Well I think the one thing I can give her to her credit is that she still thinks that she's doing this to protect her family in a way but again none of these people except for Ray have conscience that they care about anybody else or like the well being of anybody else defending people who suck anyway. So yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It's a great analogy for the rich yeah it's really it is on the nose.

SPEAKER_04

Even um when she's talking to the pig's head Satan that like Ray messed up but you know he's he just did it because he cared he's like she kind of help lie for him. Yeah. In the sense I mean you lie to your master that's taking a risk. Mm-hmm. Instead of her just saying like he's a traitor we need to kill him. Yes. Even then when he told her like the Satan head told her to kill him she was still kind of hesitant.

SPEAKER_03

Yes but the way I read Satan's head calling the thing a liar at that point um I don't think he was calling her a liar and he like the defense of him I think it was calling him a liar because he did like you know he actually wanted the well being of these people and for them to get out and for this to end.

SPEAKER_02

I kind of saw her plea as well as more of like a when a kid breaks a vase and they're kind of like pleaing with her parents like well I didn't mean to break the vase it just was like in the way of my hand and then I it fell you know it was like it wasn't like uh it's not genuine.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah it wasn't sincere I mean also it was for a point where Satan told her you know if you don't do it I'll kill you. Mm-hmm. So she didn't really have a choice.

SPEAKER_03

And going back to his point of like an us versus them now it's a me versus them well now it's a me versus him and yes I'm sorry about this and I'm hesitant but gotta protect me and the family at this point.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know if she hesitated that long but there's a she she has some tears there.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah I mean they're gonna go for over a hundred years.

SPEAKER_02

Some trepidation yeah yeah but I think she did love him. I think that's undeniable.

SPEAKER_03

I can agree with that yeah but she loved Satan more. Yeah I think she loved herself more I'm gonna say I think between herself and the immortality factor and at that point it's like everything you've built too right like you guys came from nothing and like now you're at this status and true and to Max's point like it's not technically her family but what is family if not like the bonds you build with people along the way.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah because who knows how they were there for too correct.

SPEAKER_02

So I her character was kind of poopy but I can I can have empathy.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah they seem to be the upper echelon of their community since they're the only ones are up in the higher room. So I mean yeah I still I mean she's a terrible person but yeah I can see some of her reasoning. So in the end um they leave and Asia reveals that she wrote Maria's name on the the piece of skin that she got off the devil before uh she burned it. So Maria's still alive and so with her being alive so is she immortal now and does she have to do sacrifices now?

SPEAKER_03

That's what I was wondering in theory you would think right because the boar's head is destroyed. Well the boar is still breathing as it showed that one piece of skin was breathing it wasn't just curling up to decompose or die.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah yeah I don't know that's a good I thought about that too I was like hmm so they're just gonna be just as bad as the others there's well if it didn't do 19 million maybe we could have got a cool sequel but yeah love the choice not to tell the guy what was going on either and just wait for her to reanimate.

SPEAKER_03

Yep whoa she was dead he's like you know what I don't want to know so what would you do if you're the driver and that happened it's probably better not to know in that case and just would you still be like okay well uh she's dead she's alive let's go somewhere get breakfast yeah don't ask questions at that point just go get breakfast and maybe cut those ties I mean if I was already paid for the job I'd be like hey listen I'm gonna call you guys a ta well actually how are you gonna get in a taxi you're covered in blood.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah yeah so um game back to Lily and Ray kind of like how said like feeling sympathy for them um what about the fact that they were a couple in the early 1900s and she was an immigrant East African American and you know during that time that was definitely frowned upon. So do you have any sympathy for them that they kind of feel like they had to make that deal in order to be together whereas you know they were just in society they'd probably have been killed for just marrying like uh biracial.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know her being an immigrant I don't know if it's more frowned upon like obviously yes she was white but she was an immigrant and that was viewed poorly as well at that time. So I mean I don't think the biracialness of it all is I don't think her being white but also an im like I don't think that outweighs that I think they made the deal themselves as a team in order to like I think it's like again like you're also to his point.

SPEAKER_02

I mean they're probably to say they weren't being persecuted is definitely not true. But also to say that like their persecution was the cause of their searching a better life maybe but also it's kind of like that thing like do you like if you say like kill this guy or double it and kill like give it to the next person the other guy has to kill two people it's kind of like where do you draw the line? Like if you're are you willing to kill others so that way your situation improves it's kind of like a fast way to let the soul rot, I guess.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Then also it's interesting that so they were immigrants and minorities and everything else but when it became immortal they catered to like the rich and elite who were all white. Yep. And the only ones that were African American or minorities or immigrants were the help. Which they still offered them chances here and there to become immortal too but even that they're still the help. Yep.

SPEAKER_02

And they could have their help pulled back too so like if they fucked up or stole or did something yeah they could have their name scratched off and then they would die.

SPEAKER_04

Yep. So what do you think about that when the fact that where they came from to where they're at now that they're seemed to like forgot where they came from.

SPEAKER_03

Well one forgot where they came from the other one did not like again she still had a jaded personality like yes I'm keeping these social constructs in place. Ray did not like I think I mean again he grew conscious conscience as time went on and realized that even the people that were helping or that were allowing or not allow even the people were giving the opportunity to to be the help like we're still keeping them down and these aren't bad people and we kill the ones that we still like we need to kill but like this is not right. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Or I mean see this seems like it's Ray's first time in helping somebody I can also agree with that.

SPEAKER_03

But I mean I don't know because also he says was the last one a bad person was the last one a bad it kind of seems like he's getting outruled and overrun regardless.

SPEAKER_02

It's kind of interesting like the straw that broke the camel's back was some bad bitch from prison. I was like you couldn't have like couldn't have gotten empathy for any of the other poor like actual cleaning ladies.

SPEAKER_04

I think he found empathy but I don't think he did anything about it until this one.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah I mean there's a lot of times too like even with myself like if I see something I'll be like I should do something but then I don't do something.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know that I necessarily agree with that either though because even in the beginning Lily says my husband likes to leave weird things around people's room like like he's been trying to warn people and this is like more of a blatant attempt to warn them and quite effective she got out. Again uh what's her name is uh what the Asia is prepared for this like the guy prepped her for it so like yes she's gonna survive slightly longer than maybe the other ones had a chance to so yes he doesn't get a chance to meet them in the floorboards or all of those things even after leaving the hints.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah I can see that fair point. Yeah then more so that this is the first time he's like oh wow she actually made it past these first so okay well we can do more and they got him killed anyway but yeah yeah and also getting back to that how they said at first it was just vagrants, criminals, you know the lowest of the low that they sacrificed but then that's when Ray got conscious about like what about the innocent ones that we're doing now. So if it was just you know the terrible people in the world is that more acceptable for them to sacrifice them kind of like how like even comics and stuff like Vigilante Justice seems like at this at the end of the day you're still a vigilante and it depends on your own morality system at that point.

SPEAKER_03

Like would you call Dexter a good guy because he kills serial killers but like I that all just depends on your own light at the end of the time or at like the light within yourself at that point. I mean you could argue that it's better because you're still getting these other people off the street but at the end of the day you're still a killer murderer.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah everyone gives smack on Batman for punching people in the head and hospitalizing them to the point they probably wish they were dead but like that whole thought of like if you murder a murderer there's no few murderers in the world kind of vibe. So it and the thing is too like it's I mean even outside of just current current issues around the world it it's so easy to like paint this group of people as like oh these are these are just like murderers and rapists and all this stuff and then you like peel back the layer and you're like actually those are just like normal people like it's easy to like convince yourself like oh we have to drop this bomb on a random building because there might be bad people in there but it's like yeah but then there's good people in there.

SPEAKER_03

And at what point like what crime justifies you to be eligible for this like a little kid who steals a piece of bread.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah like yeah I mean I also talked to about too back about what we said about the judicial system. Like if she had killed the father then you know the sister's life probably would have been better off. So it's kinda like vigilant injustice taken in your own hands. Yeah and then so is that justifiable killing her dad yeah justifiable to who?

SPEAKER_02

To me? Probably not to her probably so it's like but I wouldn't tell her like hey don't do that because I'm not getting my ass beat so it's easy it's easy to be like hey you I'm sitting out here in my comfy chair and my feet picked up and you shouldn't do that. It's like well gotta walk a mile in the shoes a little bit.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Well it's kind of like the whole thing with Batman like how he doesn't kill so you know they arrest them then they get out and they kill more so is that on Batman or is it on them?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah exactly.

SPEAKER_03

Because Batman could have killed them and then they wouldn't have killed innocent people but to that same extent if you don't have the evidence to justify that that person should have died, maybe Batman goes to jail and then maybe more people die anyway. I feel like the Joker has enough uh well technically he's killed the Joker so well yeah it took a while but yeah but bad first example that that's the only person he has killed.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah yeah but it's also like it it's like uh I think the arguments on the person saying like is it Batman's fault the Joker is killing people. It's like you have to try and make that argument. Whereas if you are coming from the other side I don't think you necessarily have to argue that like that case. It's like you have to prove to me that by him not killing the Joker that he's at fault where it's like technically the Joker is the one killing him. So it's like it's I can just say the Joker is the problem. But the person that's adding the extra step now you have to tell me why this guy who's not killing people is the part of the problem. And yeah like if you technically if he did something here this person doesn't get to do something there. But it's like but if he wasn't in that scenario this still happens.

SPEAKER_03

So it's like I'm just asking questions I was just gonna figure what you guys think about it. The same thing can be said about 90% of Marvel heroes who have a morality system and code system of not killing and their vid their um bad guys get released as well and they come back and kill people but at the end of the day the Marvel superhero is still going to be there to catch them again. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Plus it makes a lot of good comments.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah that's true. I'm I'm more the I'm more the visual under side but yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Plus what are we gonna do without Batman's rogue gallery of villains?

SPEAKER_02

I mean they trust me back Rorschach and Watchmen close to my heart. Yeah and he's not a good example of what I'm trying to advocate for.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah I'm gonna say that's not if you're trying to get your point across that's a bad one to use the example of exactly let me just completely kind of contradict myself so uh this movie a lot of people say that it's Basically, if Quin Tarantino and Sam Raimi had a baby.

SPEAKER_03

I can agree with that. Yep.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I could say that.

SPEAKER_03

In what ways? Um, from the overall bloodshed and gore for both of them and to the down to the licking of the feet.

SPEAKER_02

I was just gonna point that out.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I saw the people like, oh, Tarantino coded. Got it. And the way the shots are done and everything too. Like it's like the action reminds me of very high octane kill bill kind of action in all of the fights and sequences.

SPEAKER_02

So I thought a lot of the choreography was uniquely done though. Yeah, I think it definitely stood on the shoulder of giants, but I think it like did a lot for itself to like prove that it was unique.

SPEAKER_04

Even the music too is kind of very something you were seeing in a Tarantino movie. But also John Wick, especially the scene in the ballroom is very John Wicky too. I wasn't saying this because some people felt that the movie was too much like Kill Bill, uh, with a one-woman army going on a quest for revenge as well as the violence, and another movie called Ready or Not, both being action comedy slasher movies where the antagonists are rich Satanists. It also drew it also drew a comparison to the sequel of Ready or Not, uh, which came out a week before, which also could be why it didn't do so well, because it's kind of basically similar with the uh the fact that the protagonist says to like get together her strange sister to get out of situation. So, what do you guys think about that? Do you agree with it?

SPEAKER_02

No. Yeah, I mean, like, yeah, I think like to be similar to something, like like to say like one rock and roll band is picking out another because they sound similar, it's like things can be similar but not the same. But I do think people that hear something similar equate them to be the same, so I could see how like a general audience would like see ready or not and see this and go, Oh well that one I saw the first one, I'll watch the second one.

SPEAKER_03

I think that I that's what I was going to say that they would be more excited for a sequel of something they liked versus something that is unproven or brand new. So yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I was like even at the end when um like in Ready or Not after uh um Samar Weaven's character Grace is sitting on the tape at the stairs and the police come and they're like, what happened? It's like in-laws. And of this one, they come down, guys like, what happened, rich people? Mm-hmm. Like, well, just gonna tie that both in together with that too. But I can see the resemblance between it. Just watch like when I I think in my review, I actually compared it to both of those two. Just I mean, it's kind of obvious, but it's still well done. I think they should have waited to release it like until after Radio Not 2 was out, instead of like the following week, because that's just two of the similar movies.

SPEAKER_02

I think honestly, if they would have released in like June, I think I probably would have done it. I think so well if other things of like similar quality and to be like an hour and a half long and just fun. Like that's like a perfect summer release.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Oh yeah. So getting back to the the cultist uh cultists story when they're talking to Maria about um sticking around, they say that like they gave them the opportunity to join them, but the opportunity is basically join us or get sacrificed to Satan. Yeah. So is that really an actual choice?

SPEAKER_03

Depends on your own morality at that point and what you're in it for.

SPEAKER_02

I'd say probably not. It depends. Does the person have the have any desire to die? Because if they don't care if they die, then technically they do have a choice. Yeah. But if you care if you die, then the only thing you care about is not dying.

SPEAKER_04

Well, we wouldn't I would I don't mind dying, but I don't want to get sacrificed to Satan.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's probably also not a delightful experience.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. So no, I would take the deal. But so this is Zazie Beats' first leading role. Like she was in um Deadpool 2, Joker, those other movies as side characters.

SPEAKER_03

So what did you guys think about her first uh major performance? It's a fun romp for her to carry, and I think it she did a great job. I mean, a lot of it wasn't necessarily I don't want to say there wasn't a whole lot of acting, because a lot of it was fuck you, no fuck you, and each like but it was fun. Like she did what the character was casted to do very well. So I think she in herself did a good job.

SPEAKER_04

So does she prove herself to be a good action, like a modern day action deal?

SPEAKER_03

Yes, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I think even beyond just action, I think what because I mean it was black comedy action, whatever you want to call it, but there wasn't a lot of like reservoir dogs level dialogue in the movie, but I think like where there lacked dialogue, there was a lot of like really good like body language. Like she was really communicating well with like her facial expressions or like the way her body was like yeah in the scene. I was like, like she didn't really have to say anything for me to kind of like feel like she was doing like when she with the bookshelf, like yeah, or when she's hiding behind the pans and like all that was like yeah, you could you could tell.

SPEAKER_04

Alright, so Tyler's your favorite time of year. Um what's that time of the episode is first time jitters. Five questions. See how much you get right. How much time passed when Asia went to jail and when she arrived at the Virgil? Ten years. Or nine years, eleven months, whichever one you want to go off of. Well, nine that was when she was in the prison, but yeah. Ten years. Uh, what did Asia and Maria's father die of? Cancer. Yep. What is the passcode to the final chamber? Six, six, six. Yep.

SPEAKER_02

I actually got all three of those right in my head.

SPEAKER_04

Scott's honor. In the standee at the beginning, how many mannequins are around the table?

unknown

Oh.

SPEAKER_03

It's five or six.

SPEAKER_02

It's five, isn't it?

SPEAKER_03

I'm gonna roll with six. Six?

unknown

Dang.

SPEAKER_02

That's why yeah, don't listen to me. What was it? There was the one sitting down.

SPEAKER_04

There's one on the left. Right. Two in the middle of sitting, two in the end sitting, and two in the middle of standing.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

unknown

Oh, that's right.

SPEAKER_03

Also, six might be a safer roll of the dice because of the devil.

SPEAKER_04

So yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

That's also true.

SPEAKER_04

I think you got four of us so far. Well, I guess you both did because telling you you knew it too. So last question is the opening uh words say when the poor gives to the rich, what?

SPEAKER_02

Oh. Satan laughs.

SPEAKER_03

It's shit. I noted this too. I don't remember. The devil laughs. Okay, I was gonna say, I know it's something like that. So you're close. I'll give it to you.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, like now if you would have been like, who said it? It was like something, it was an Italian guy.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I couldn't, I'm like, oh no, I wouldn't. It starts with a B, I know that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it was like vanilli something. I was like, if you were gonna ask that, I'd be like, just take the point.

SPEAKER_04

I'm gonna say I couldn't pronounce his name, so I'm like, nah. Alright, so Rotten Tomatoes out of a hundred, what would the critics score? Sixty-six.

SPEAKER_02

I guess.

SPEAKER_04

Um eighty-two? Sixty-five. Audience score?

SPEAKER_03

I agree with that. I I would say how much more. I'll roll with an eighty.

SPEAKER_02

I'll say seventy-six.

SPEAKER_04

77?

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Alright. So what would you rate it out of a hundred? For what it is, and being a fun action romp and well done, and me loving black comedies and all of that fun, I would I would safely say an 82, because everything's like well done, it's shot well. It's camera work, it's fun, it's fluid. I'd roll with an 82 to 85. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I'd say like an 89. Because like the dork in me was like peeking out the whole time about all of the little things. Like, sure, the movie was an hour and a half and it was very like bluntly straightforward, so it wasn't like a lot there, but like all the little things in it, I don't know. It was just so much fun. I don't I could see how like a general audience probably wouldn't be so pumped on it, but for me, I was like, that's like to me, like, if someone was like, give me like the perfect action movie, I'm like, this isn't perfect, but it's pretty fucking close. Yeah, I can agree with that.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I would give it 90. Yeah, because I've seen it now three times and I still love it. It's fun. The rewatchability, yeah, it's fun, it's easy to watch. It's gonna be a hard one not to love or enjoy. Like, yeah, it's not it doesn't overstay its welcome. It's just like boom, boom, boom, action, action, action, comedy, comedy, comedy, filming, sound, music, everything. Like, perfect, good job. I liked it. So, last question. Uh movies redone. Everyone is Muppets, one is human. Who is who is the human?

SPEAKER_03

The boarhead.

SPEAKER_02

The boarhead's human? Yep. Um I'd say Asia. Asia's human. I just want to see her slicing up Muppets just stuffing everywhere.

SPEAKER_04

I picked Lily. Well, I I that was on my list too. Because it'd be interesting to see that too, with her finding uh Miss Biggie. Just yeah. Miss Piggy in the going around fucking wrecking shit.

SPEAKER_03

Oh Lord. Good times. Well, uh the whole dramatic who the fuck are you?

SPEAKER_05

The fuck are you? It's pretty you bitch.

unknown

God damn it.

SPEAKER_04

But Miss Piggy just punching kid in the face.

SPEAKER_02

Knocker Clean out.

SPEAKER_04

I don't know any of the female Muppets. I know Miss Piggy's the only female Muppet I know. I mean, there's probably more. I'll have to look them up. Yeah. Anyway, so that's all the timber for today. Thank you, Tyler. Thank you, Max, for getting your cemeteries popped with They Will Kill You. What are your final thoughts?

SPEAKER_03

I kind of wish I changed my answer to Lily, but final thoughts.

SPEAKER_02

Regret. Regret. No, it was it was good. It was a lot of fun. Definitely catch it on streaming for sure. Yes. If you're into just like that, like Joe said, Tarantino, John Wick, Sam Raimi. Sam Raimi conglomerate. It's all that and a little more.

SPEAKER_03

Yep. Yep. I think even if you're not a person who enjoys those, you'll still find something to have fun with.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. True.

SPEAKER_03

Very true.

SPEAKER_04

All right. Thank you all for listening. Until next time, remember to stay fresh.
