punch into Matthew chapter 5. 00:02:31.599 --> 00:02:40.639 Several weeks ago, we began this series on the Sermon on the Mount, and then this last week we kind of did an introduction, an overview. 00:02:40.800 --> 00:02:49.280 And at this point now, we are going to start slowly crawling through the Sermon on the Mount. 00:02:50.159 --> 00:02:58.000 Uh it's not because I don't have any more material and I figure we need to spend the next three years on the Sermon on the Mount. 00:02:58.159 --> 00:03:15.680 That's not why we're going slowly, it's because it's so rich and so full of life and a call to live and love in a way that's different than what they had lived in the past and what we sometimes find ourselves in as well. 00:03:16.159 --> 00:03:22.960 So uh Matthew chapter 5, verse 3, there might be a little heading at the top of that in italics. 00:03:23.120 --> 00:03:24.800 What does that heading say? 00:03:26.240 --> 00:03:27.520 The Beatitudes. 00:03:27.840 --> 00:03:31.039 Okay, what exactly is a beatitude? 00:03:31.199 --> 00:03:32.800 Why do we have that in our Bible? 00:03:32.960 --> 00:03:33.840 What does it mean? 00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:40.960 Does it have something to do with a little insect and the way that you view life, or maybe there's something else to it? 00:03:41.120 --> 00:03:47.199 Well, actually, the word beatitude, it's just a Latin word that means blessing. 00:03:47.439 --> 00:03:54.400 And the reason why it's titled Beatitude or Blessings is because that's what Jesus is now going to begin. 00:03:54.560 --> 00:04:04.000 He's going to have these next nine phrases that he's going to use, and they all start off with this idea of blessing. 00:04:04.240 --> 00:04:14.319 It's the Greek word uh makarios, uh, which means uh blessed or blessed if you're like me and you learn from the King James. 00:04:14.479 --> 00:04:22.720 It also means happy, but even beyond that, there's something more, and we'll dive deeper into that in just a little bit. 00:04:22.800 --> 00:04:35.519 But one of the things I want you to notice is the tone in which Jesus begins this amazing, beautiful, incredible sermon. 00:04:37.759 --> 00:04:47.680 He's gonna start off with kindness and compassion and hope. 00:04:48.079 --> 00:05:10.879 Now, later on, we will get to points in the sermon where Jesus is going to offer some pretty strong rebukes and some harsh words and some warnings, but right now, as he opens it up, he looks out over the people and he says, Blessed, happy, fulfilled are you. 00:05:11.839 --> 00:05:20.480 And this is so very important because of the audience in which he is delivering this message to. 00:05:21.439 --> 00:05:35.600 As we talked about last week, verses 1 and 2, Jesus sees a crowd, and then he just goes and he sits up on the mountainside, but they're drawn to him, they come to him, and he begans he began to teach them. 00:05:37.519 --> 00:05:51.600 You see, he was talking to a people who were drawn to this teacher, this Galilean, because he was offering something that they didn't have. 00:05:52.160 --> 00:05:57.439 It's so important to place ourselves in the context of what was going on. 00:05:57.680 --> 00:05:59.519 Who was with Jesus at the time? 00:05:59.680 --> 00:06:01.040 Who were these disciples? 00:06:01.279 --> 00:06:04.639 Who were these people who were listening to this sermon? 00:06:04.800 --> 00:06:07.519 It was mainly a group of Jews. 00:06:08.959 --> 00:06:14.639 It was a group of Jews that were living in a country that used to be theirs. 00:06:14.800 --> 00:06:16.560 They used to be proud people. 00:06:16.720 --> 00:06:30.480 They were a very religious people, they loved their one and only God, but things had gone south years prior, and now they are literally living in an occupied country. 00:06:30.639 --> 00:06:34.160 The Romans have come in, they have taken over. 00:06:34.879 --> 00:06:46.480 The enemy is on the street corner, the enemy is roaming up and down the roadways, the enemy is collecting taxes and sending their money off. 00:06:47.759 --> 00:06:56.000 And they're frustrated and they're angry and they don't know what to do, and they're just nearly at the end of the rope. 00:06:56.879 --> 00:07:07.839 And so these Jews who love God, who have read stories, they know the psalms of a God who delivers and a God who loves, but they're not being delivered. 00:07:08.720 --> 00:07:24.000 And anytime they find themselves near the temple, instead of hearing stories about a God who redeems and delivers, they hear stories from these priests who say you're not doing good enough and you're worthless. 00:07:24.639 --> 00:07:29.439 You need to be more like me, is what they're hearing. 00:07:29.680 --> 00:07:43.199 And so they're receiving oppression from the outside economically, and they're receiving oppression from the inside spiritually, and they're hurting and wounded. 00:07:43.519 --> 00:07:53.759 And so when Jesus opens this sermon, he's speaking to the have nots and likely the never-wills. 00:07:55.279 --> 00:08:08.639 And he opens up with these words about God blessing the brokenhearted and the downtrodden, the peacemakers and the persecuted. 00:08:09.040 --> 00:08:12.079 And he'll open up with this very first line. 00:08:12.240 --> 00:08:19.759 He says, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 00:08:19.920 --> 00:08:28.800 And so we want to take just a moment to unpack this idea of what does it actually mean to be poor in spirit. 00:08:28.959 --> 00:08:35.440 If we're confused, we might think he's talking about those who don't have the spirit of God in their life. 00:08:35.679 --> 00:08:40.720 Like the capital S spirit, but that's not where Jesus is going. 00:08:40.879 --> 00:08:47.120 If we're not careful, we might read that saying, well, maybe you are the people who don't have enough of God. 00:08:47.360 --> 00:08:55.279 Poor in spirit really means the people who just really need God. 00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:05.039 He's talking about those who recognize that their spirit is low. 00:09:05.440 --> 00:09:08.879 They're the ones who can't do it on their own. 00:09:09.039 --> 00:09:16.320 That's the poor in spirit that he was talking to then, and what it applies to many of us today. 00:09:17.600 --> 00:09:22.559 He's talking to the humble and the lowly and the desperate. 00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:27.200 And he's saying, if that's you, then I want you to be at peace. 00:09:27.440 --> 00:09:32.639 I want you to be happy, and I want you to dare to have hope. few examples of people who are poor in spirit throughout the Bible. 00:09:49.279 --> 00:09:55.440 One of my favorite stories is that just for when I say favorite, just pretend I didn't say it because it means almost nothing. 00:09:55.600 --> 00:09:56.480 I apologize. 00:09:56.720 --> 00:09:59.600 Because every story in the Bible is my favorite. 00:09:59.759 --> 00:10:02.159 But I love the story of Elijah. 00:10:02.320 --> 00:10:04.480 He's on uh at Mount Carmel. 00:10:04.720 --> 00:10:08.559 There's this big battle that goes down, and Elijah wins. 00:10:08.720 --> 00:10:11.600 Fire comes from heaven, it consumes the altar. 00:10:11.679 --> 00:10:12.799 It's a really good day. 00:10:13.039 --> 00:10:14.960 Rain is gonna happen, folks. 00:10:15.200 --> 00:10:18.000 We know it's a good day if there's rain, right? 00:10:18.080 --> 00:10:18.960 Things are gonna grow. 00:10:19.279 --> 00:10:23.679 He is gonna be empowered by God to outrun a chariot. 00:10:23.840 --> 00:10:31.120 He goes into being poor in spirit. 00:10:40.480 --> 00:10:43.279 He says, God, I just can't do it anymore. 00:10:43.600 --> 00:10:45.279 Just take my life. 00:10:45.519 --> 00:10:57.360 Isaiah, as he's being commissioned by God, he sees the throne room and the angels, and he says, Woe is me, for I am ruined. 00:10:58.159 --> 00:11:03.759 I'm a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips. 00:11:04.080 --> 00:11:05.519 He is poor in spirit. 00:11:05.759 --> 00:11:09.679 He recognizes his lowliness, his worthlessness. 00:11:09.919 --> 00:11:12.960 David finds himself probably in hiding. 00:11:13.039 --> 00:11:15.279 We don't know the context, but it seems that. 00:11:15.360 --> 00:11:21.120 And in Psalm 31, he says, Be merciful to me, for I am in distress. 00:11:22.399 --> 00:11:30.399 My eyes are filled with grief, and my body and soul with sorrow. 00:11:31.200 --> 00:11:33.279 He says, I just can't do it. 00:11:33.360 --> 00:11:34.639 I don't know where to turn. 00:11:34.879 --> 00:11:52.799 Hannah in the temple, she's wanted a child her whole life, and she can't have one, and she's in the temple, and she cries out, she prays, Lord Almighty, if you will only look at your servant's misery and remember me. 00:11:53.200 --> 00:11:58.000 Hannah understands this idea of being poor in spirit. 00:11:58.320 --> 00:12:14.480 Jesus himself knows this and he models what it is to be poor in spirit as he finds himself in the garden and he's overwhelmed and he's sweating and he's broken down and he's on his face and he's crying out. 00:12:14.639 --> 00:12:23.279 He prays to God, my Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. 00:12:23.519 --> 00:12:25.919 Let it be taken from me. 00:12:27.039 --> 00:12:29.840 This is what poor in spirit is. 00:12:30.080 --> 00:12:35.440 It doesn't mean that you don't have enough of God, and it doesn't mean like, oh, I'm just a terrible person. 00:12:35.679 --> 00:12:41.360 It is a crying out, a calling, and recognizing your emptiness. 00:12:42.559 --> 00:12:46.159 And so, what does it mean to be rich in spirit? 00:12:46.399 --> 00:12:49.440 I suppose there are a few examples of that. 00:12:49.679 --> 00:12:57.919 If you find yourself in the mirror, flexing a lot, maybe you're rich in spirit. 00:12:58.159 --> 00:13:07.600 Maybe if you find yourself admiring your portfolio and all the money that you've saved up, maybe you're rich in spirit. 00:13:07.919 --> 00:13:15.600 Maybe you enjoy polishing your resume and adding big words and letters after your name. 00:13:15.840 --> 00:13:18.240 Maybe you're rich in spirit. 00:13:18.559 --> 00:13:29.519 Or maybe if you love arranging your trophies and admiring them, maybe you are rich in spirit. 00:13:32.320 --> 00:13:41.840 And so Jesus is gonna call those who are broken and struggling, and he's gonna offer words of comfort and words of hope. 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:48.240 But as we look at this, we need to be careful to see what the beatitudes are not. 00:13:48.799 --> 00:13:52.559 They are not a checklist of things to do. 00:13:52.720 --> 00:13:57.440 It's not some sort of magical if-then clause. 00:13:58.240 --> 00:14:02.399 Maybe if I'm meek, God will give me the uh earth. 00:14:02.559 --> 00:14:06.879 Or if I'm a peacemaker, he'll call me a child of God. 00:14:07.200 --> 00:14:11.279 Or maybe if I'm persecuted, I can have the kingdom. 00:14:12.320 --> 00:14:29.440 The Beatitudes is not a checklist of how we should live, it is describing the characteristics of people that God will bless and honor and welcome. 00:14:30.559 --> 00:14:35.039 Those who mourn, God will comfort. 00:14:35.840 --> 00:14:41.279 Those who crave righteousness, God will fill. 00:14:41.519 --> 00:14:47.120 Those who offer mercy, God will show mercy. 00:14:48.159 --> 00:14:56.960 But if we're not careful, we can treat it like some type of spiritual instant gratification vending machine. 00:14:57.279 --> 00:15:03.679 We can read through the Beatitudes and say, okay, if I mourn, you comfort me. 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:08.000 God, I'm sad, you need to come and fix it and make me happy. 00:15:11.519 --> 00:15:19.039 It's not also that life is always terrible. 00:15:20.559 --> 00:15:32.000 It means that we trust in God, that we believe in him, and that he will keep his promises. 00:15:33.919 --> 00:15:38.879 Some of us are likely to think, oh, life is terrible. 00:15:39.039 --> 00:15:45.759 I'm going to cry and starve and be persecuted, but then someday I'm going to be blessed. 00:15:46.080 --> 00:15:48.000 It's not that either. 00:15:48.320 --> 00:15:54.559 It's not like things have to be terrible now, and someday God is going to be there for me. 00:15:54.720 --> 00:16:05.440 In fact, the first and the last of the Beatitudes speak of the here and now, the promises that theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 00:16:06.000 --> 00:16:15.360 Your understanding and your faith and your trust that God will save you, that reunion or seeing the kids or having some peace and quiet or going out on that date. 00:17:20.319 --> 00:17:25.200 But that doesn't change what's going to happen Monday through Friday. 00:17:25.519 was going through in my head thinking about what are some different examples of people in the Bible who displayed being poor in spirit, I just I was thinking, well, Elijah's a great example because the struggle that he went through and Isaiah and David and Hannah, and of course Jesus in the garden. 00:21:58.559 --> 00:21:59.759 And I wasn't even thinking. 00:22:00.400 --> 00:22:13.920 About it, but later on, as I was looking through that list, I realized that all these people, those who I would identify as poor in spirit, who had a struggle in their life, they had hardship and heartache. 00:22:14.079 --> 00:22:19.359 The one thing is I was picturing what example can I use from their life? 00:22:19.599 --> 00:22:23.599 Every single one of them were crying out to God. 00:22:25.039 --> 00:22:28.799 Elijah was in the desert and he was crying out to God. 00:22:28.960 --> 00:22:32.000 Isaiah before the temple was crying out to God. 00:22:32.319 --> 00:22:35.599 David in his fear was crying out to God. 00:22:35.839 --> 00:22:38.559 Hannah in the temple, Jesus in the garden. 00:22:38.720 --> 00:22:40.480 They were poor in spirit. 00:22:40.799 --> 00:22:52.559 What led them to God was because they depended and needed him and realized they couldn't do it on their own. 00:22:55.599 --> 00:22:59.839 This is not a call to be a people who suffer. 00:22:59.920 --> 00:23:06.319 We're not called to be masochists, who look for problems in our lives and dive into poor decisions. 00:23:08.319 --> 00:23:36.480 But instead, when we find ourselves struggling to seek out a God who makes big promises and keeps them, to look for the God who comforts and to find a God who takes the cries of his people, holds them close, and one day will turn them into joy. 00:23:37.359 --> 00:23:43.119
