You freeze.
Your mind races through a thousand possibilities. Is it a misunderstanding? Is it a rumor? Or is the threat real? The hallway outside suddenly feels different. Every sound feels louder. Every second feels longer.
As educators, you’re trained to protect your students. You’re trained to remain calm. To follow protocol. To keep everyone safe. But no one really prepares you for the moment when you realize—you might be the one in danger.
You’re told to stay put. Don’t leave. Don’t move. Wait for instructions.
But waiting is the hardest part.
