Speaker 1:

You're listening to Teacher Panore email and more, the only podcast that helps you take the mystery out of what to write for your TPT store, whether you're struggling with what to write your email list or how to phrase your product description so you rake in buckets of cash. We'll be covering the exact steps each week. Let's get started. What is a welcome email and how should you use it? I want to give you an analogy today on what a welcome email is and how you should use it and how you should so not use it. I'm on a lot of Teacher Panore lists very secretly to learn what other people are doing, and actually started this because in the course I took, you had to practice rewriting other people's emails. So I started jumping on TPT's list and rewriting their emails in the style and using the technique that we were supposed to use for our homework, and then we would submit some of those for homework or get reviews and that sort of thing. So, going back to the point, welcome emails are one of the hardest things you can write, so they can be brutal, especially when you're like I'm not good enough to write this, I don't know what I should write, and you're sitting there and you're staring at a blank screen, and so I just first want to give kudos to anybody who has put out a welcome email and tried because it's hard, I hope to get some materials in my store about welcome emails for you. So first let's start out with an analogy on what a welcome email is, and I think you'll understand how to write them and how not to write them after I give you this analogy. So let's say that your mom's birthday is coming up and you want to get her some like hand soap, something cool. She likes bath products, and so she's ran out recently and you noticed that, and so you wanted to get her some hand soap, but you're just not sure exactly what scent she would like or what style of soap she would like. So you walked into one of those bath and body stores that get all those soaps and scents and all this stuff. So you walk in the store and you're greeted by a sales clerk and she comes up to you. She's like hi, how are you? And so I'm fine, I'm looking for some soap from my mom, can you help me? She's like yes, let me tell you about the store. And you're like okay. So she tells you that she opened the store back in 2010 and she's been running it. She started running it by herself and then she actually had some of her kids help her when she started opening it and it was really fun. And she used to have a cat that would hang around in the window of the store, but the cat died about two years ago and it was really sad and it was really hard. And she's still looking for another cat, but she's not there yet. And then she tells you about all the different product lines she has. And then she tells you about it's almost tax season, so she's got to worry about that. And she's going on and on and on about her business, but not in a way that's helping you pick out a soap.

Speaker 1:

That's what it feels like when you get an email that says hey, I'm Katie, this is my dog Lady and we're the faces behind Cosine Creative. We'd love for you to come shop our store and you're just like ew, gross, no, leave me alone. So that's not very helpful. It's fun, it's cute, but it's not very helpful. It's easy to do and that's what a lot of us have done. There's a better way and it's actually easier. So let's go back to the analogy. So one thing you want to do is you want to say hey, if you were the sales clerk, welcome to my store.

Speaker 1:

Tell me a little bit about your mom. What are you looking for? What is she like? Is she a teacher too? Does she work in the health care field? People in the health care field tend to like more conditioning soap, or some people really like the bubbles. Does she tend to buy things that are foaming already? Does she keep it in her bathroom or does she keep it by her kitchen sink? I'm asking you these questions, asking you about what you need, or what you think your mom needs. It's really going to help her pick the perfect product for you, or help guide your perfect product. You're like okay, cool, now how do I do that with my store?

Speaker 1:

Right, so the way you would do that with your store is you're saying, hey, welcome to my email list. What I do is so. For example, in my store, I focus on visual chemistry, so I'm like hey, welcome to my list. This is where we do we learn all about visual chemistry, how to draw chemistry out and make it more sense, because it is such an abstract science that students get lost, they give up and they don't care because they can't see it. So we're going to help them see it. And then the teacher knows immediately that, yes, I want to start drawing out chemistry because that sounds fun and interesting. Or they're like no, you're crazy, I'm leaving, and that helps them.

So if you do kindergarten products that are bright and colorful, or you do fonts, are you doing scripty fonts? Are you doing fonts that are easy for teachers to use in their TPT products, because there's too many scripty fonts? These are the things that you can talk about, like what is your store purpose? Like, who are you helping in your store? That's kind of what you want to address. Do you have a blog that you give out free information on? That's where you would introduce. You say you know, my blog is here, my most popular article is here. Lots of teachers love this article because it helps you learn how to teach, whatever the lesson.

Or maybe your Instagram account. You give freebies every Monday or Tuesday, or you do a 50% off every Wednesday through your Instagram account. Then you want to tell them about their Instagram, your Instagram account, so they can go follow you If you release products on a certain day. You want to tell them all these little things about your business that's going to help them, because all those things are just going to give them free or something to look forward to or something to help them learn, and that's what you want to get to do in your email welcome series, or if you just do a single welcome email. So are we pen pals? Yet I'd love to know that I'm not just trying to educate the closet. So sign up for my free product line sampler so I can send you a personal message and get you the freebie. Talk to you Monday.
