Jordan Budd Season 2 Episode 3

Send us a text

This episode is dedicated to digging all of your gear out and making sure it's ready to go for season. I have a bear hunt in Wyoming coming up later this week and have been double checking all of my tents, putting new batteries in everything I can find and making sure I have tools and gear ready for the mountains. In today's episode I run through my whole gear list for the hunt, what I make sure to have in my vehicles and what I've screwed up in the past.

Also an update on my upcoming elk film with MeatEater and an update to Running Water Hunting.

SPEAKER_00:

what's up everyone welcome back to the running wire podcast jordan budd here and in this episode for the bulk of it i want to talk about an upcoming bear hunt and some of the gear some of like the pre-season checklist type stuff that i'm doing to get ready for it Uh, of course, like as the fall ended last year and we like get into guiding, there's kind of gear strung all over, you know, between like in different totes and things aren't exactly as organized as they could be. So it's always fun in the springtime, getting that stuff back out and trying to get it organized and especially trying to find it before a mountain hunt like this. So I'm going to Wyoming. I'm hunting with my buddy, Jane Bales. Um, He knows bears way better than I do, and I actually haven't bear hunted that much. So really looking forward to learning some stuff from him and just getting out and about and getting the season kicked off. We are filming this for Meat Eater. This will be one of my Meat Eater films eventually. I'm not sure when they're going to get it done. Probably end of this year or beginning of next year, just with how things... work in the queue. So yeah, it's going to be, that's going to be awesome. And a little more like update on some meteor films. I have my Nebraska elk hunt is getting worked on right now. I've seen a couple of cuts and it's going to be awesome. I'm super excited for everybody to see that, just that kind of whole process, how it worked to me. It was really special to me because it's you know, a very limited tag for Nebraska. It's residents only. I got to sneak into it, into the land owner pool because of the ranch. And so got that tag. And I, I'm pretty sure that we did a whole podcast talking about kind of the whole story and how it worked out. But the, if you want to go back and listen to it to get some more details, you can, if not, the basic cliff notes, um, are I, I drew this tag. It's very limited tag, very special to me because of course it's on the ranch and we have not had elk forever. Um, when I was a kid, we never saw elk. And then when we started to, you know, it was like a huge treat. I always thought I was going to have to go out West to hunt elk. And all of a sudden we have, and I did first, like I've killed bulls, Wyoming, Arizona. Um, but I had never, you know, just be just trying to draw a tag here. It was like super long shot for residents. It's, it's once in a lifetime. Um, again, like I got to sneak in with it on a landowner, so that's not once in a lifetime, but there is a, I think it's a five-year waiting period before you can start applying for it again. So anyways, um, yeah, I've got this tag, um, Never thought I'd be able to hunt elk here. And here I am hunting elk. And, uh, the year previous to that, when I was guiding my brother-in-law actually had a tag and I had, you know, like my reveal cell cam trail cam set up everywhere. I think I was running like 30 some cameras had a pretty good inventory of what we had for bulls. And then literally we go out to glass the night before and this new bull, uh, Pops up immediately. Bugle in his head off. Gigantic bull. Tons of mass, especially on his top. It carries it all the way through his tops. And so that's the bull we were going to try to get. Didn't end up that way. Brandon shot a different bull. And then I had a little bit of a break before the next clients came in. And Leah and I actually went out to scout. And we had this bull at 70 yards. Bugling his face off. Got some fantastic video of him. And he ended up moving off. I didn't see him again for the rest of the year. The client shot a different big bull, which was good as always. And this bull that I ended up killing this last year... Later on that year, I got one picture of him later season after season had ended. It was in like December or something like that. But then I went out about now, probably springtime. I'm not like a huge shed hunter, but it's especially for elk. It always intrigues me to go out and try to pick up sheds from bulls that we've had pictures of. And I actually picked up his matching set on the ranch, like did not think that that would happen. So I have this matching set. And I'm like, I'll probably never see this bull again. Well, I'm trying to keep this cliff notey, but, um, so anyway, the year that comes, I draw a tag, super stoked, get all my trail cameras set out. Don't get one picture of him, have a pretty good inventory of what I've got going on. Like two days before season, a rifle season opens. I get a bugling video of him in the middle of the night. Show up. He looks exactly like he did the year before. He's got this cool, like, flamey thrower point thing off of his swords. And he's just, like, a super cool bull. And I'm like, oh, God. Like, he showed back up. I might actually have a shot at this bull. I never saw him on the hoof. Never had another picture of him. And ended up killing him, like, three days later, four days later from that picture. He was always in the area, but... um, hunting a lot of like literal cornfields. Um, it's like a rainforest in their jungle. You cannot go into the corn. You got to get them out and ended up pulling it off. So, uh, super cool bull. He ended up, he's a mid three seventies bull. Uh, I scored him a couple of times at three 75. My buddy Cole scored him at three 77. He's like, you got to keep with the bigger numbers, but, um, big bowl, have some history with them. It's going to be awesome. Um, I will certainly talk about that and like through my Instagram or whatever, I'll talk about that bull more as we get closer to when that thing is going to launch. I would say like early summer, which we're almost there. So yeah, it'll be super fun. So, um, that is update, uh, other update with the ranch. I mean, we are, uh, We're booking right now for turkey season next year. If you want to get in on it, I do have some spots left, but we're rolling over some repeats from this year. And then we already had some people book, so I don't have a ton of spots left. But if you're interested in turkey hunting, shoot me a message. We can get you hooked up for this next year. This year, things went pretty well. Let me see. I had seven. We had seven clients, six of the seven tagged. It was a strange year. I'll go into it in a different podcast. But it seems like we had an early spring. The winter was warm for the most part. It's been a warm spring. We literally haven't gotten... I bet you year to date from beginning of the year to now with snow and the rain that we've got, we... maybe totaling like two inches, which is horrible. Um, which is like a whole, whole nother subject with cows and ranch stuff. But I think that, uh, the turkeys were early as well. It seemed like last year when we were like hunting right around the opener of shotgun, which is like the second Saturday in April, I think it, uh, a lot of the birds were still grouped up and it was tough to get those toms to pull away. Um, This year, it seemed like right around the opening when we were hunting, they were a bit more responsive. And then it also seemed like it shut off quicker. It seemed like those hens were going to sit on their nest quicker, which should correlate in my mind to Tom's really responding more. But one thing we did have, we have a literal metric ton of jakes around. And calling to those... single toms at all with any kind of like aggression. They just thought it was a jig and they would just run away. So, um, the name of the game later on this year would have been sitting in a blind with like one hen decoy out and softly, softly calling once every 20 minutes, once every 40 minutes, whatever. And you're just going to have to wait them out, which is tough for people to do. to sit and like hang out um so you're tempted to like go try to get in front of them and stuff and turkeys are just so like they're driving nuts i really don't like them very much um but we'll get into that in a different one so for yeah this episode we're going to dive into the bear hunt and just some basic like pre-season checklisty type stuff i'm doing gonna go through a gear list i'm gonna try to keep it not too long and drawn out and explainy um those, uh, the, the super explaining ones and intricate ones can go for, um, another, another episode kind of on specific items on here. But first up pre season checklist, obviously find all of your stuff. One thing I like to do with shelters, especially get those things pitched and make sure that, uh, you don't remember there was any spots you needed to like touch up on seam seal, but especially make sure that that all of your stakes are there and you're not missing any stakes. Add to it if needed. If there's any repairs you need to make, get that stuff done and just get it ready for when you get in the field and you're tired and it's raining and it's windy, whatever. You make sure you have all your stuff there all packaged up as far as your shelter goes to get that whipped up and get you some some blockage from the elements. So that's one of the first things I would say to do. And then the second one, I mean, most of the stuff I have kind of has to do with the electronics. So obviously make sure all your stuff is charged, but I would make sure that everything is updated as well, especially through your phone and everything's talking to each other. So what I have down here for me is Onyx. Make sure I go through and update my Onyx app. and then make sure I have the map downloaded to the area that I'm going. Um, depending kind of on what I'm doing, I have a couple of different methods for this. I go, usually go on, I go with, um, like the low detail, the largest map you can get and just do one of like the entire unit if you can, or the entire area that you're going to probably be in that will make sure that like all the road layers and stuff like that are saved. So, you know, worst case scenario, you're like, I'm freaking lost. You can have the whole thing pulled up. So even though it's low detail, you still got all your roads and stuff and you can, you should be able to manage to find yourself with that. Um, and then I, from the large one, I go to the super detailed one and that is where I will snapshot like and download like a certain Canyon that I'm going into. Um, a certain cluster of pins. And then you can do multiples of those and make it so you have like the most high detailed maps. For this, because I have Jaden with me and he knows the area and it's not like it that big of an area. I did just one medium that can do the whole area. It's kind of medium, medium definition. Like I don't need to know where this one little tree is on the side of the hill, probably. Hope I don't. But it still gives me decent detail, still includes all the roads, and gets me the whole unit in one map, which I kind of like. So make sure you do that. And I would not update anything right before you go. I mean, I'm a week in advance here just to make sure everything's going to work correctly. Update the app for the Garmin inReach. I think mine is the Explorer because I have the inReach Mini 2. Make sure that is updated and then make sure that you open it and it is talking to your inReach and everything is okay there. I've had it before to where like, oh man, I forgot to update my app and I go to update it right before I go up the mountain. I lose service. I get back there and go to open it and it makes me like sign in or something like that. And that is... Because then you're typing with the side buttons one at a time on your inReach. So do that. And then, of course, like look at your plan. A lot of these plans are awesome because they're like their freedom type plans. You can pause them whenever you want to. So we end up pausing them. And then we get back and we're like, oh man, I forgot to unpause it. We'll get on and just make sure that you have whatever plan is good. It's always good to test it as well. Just like send your own phone a message. Make sure it's getting it. Send a message back. Make sure it's getting it. Then you're all in the clear. And what else? Okay, my BDX app. So I'm a big SIG fan. My... like my range finders are SIG. So they talk to the SIG BDX app. That's what I input all my data into. And then when I go, um, like validate all my ballistics, that's what everything works through. So I want to make sure that thing is updated and I want to make sure it's already like paired and talking to my range finder. Good. Um, once you get on the mountain, you do not need to pull your phone out and really use it in any manner, but I just like to make sure it's like updated, um, Um, everything looks good. So do that. And then of course, go out and like validate, double check your data, make sure you're still zeroed, make sure you're, you know, your ballistics are still good at distance. Like it's all basic stuff, but, um, just wanted to mention it. And then for me, I have a metric ton of camera gear, um, Thank you for watching. make sure that thing's updated, make sure it's talking to my camera. So if I need to like do a shot or something where I'm in it, I can control it from my phone and I can see a preview. That's kind of my main deal is making sure I can see a preview and then I can take pictures from that camera to my phone. I can do that all within that app. So I just want to make sure that that stuff's updated. And then, um, what else? Yeah. So yeah, my Sony, uh, My, the GoPro quick app. I can do the same thing. Talk to my GoPro with my phone. And here's a fun thing too. If you have a GoPro and you have a Garmin watch, I have the Garmin Phoenix eight and I put the GoPro. It's like a GoPro remote on your inReach. So, or sorry, geez, that was confusing. Okay. My Garmin watch. I can put a GoPro remote app on that that will talk to my GoPro. So if it's on my head or it's out somewhere, I can literally control it from my watch. They do make Garmin... They do make remotes for them as well. I have one. It takes a special kind of charger. And do you think I can find that thing? No. So I looked around a little bit and Garmin... made an app for that, which is pretty sweet control right from my watch. So make sure that that stuff is all updated and talking to each other. And then, um, drone, like make sure my DJI app is up. Um, yes, I do take a drone with me. We do not fly them at all until after we're completely done with the hunt. And so make sure that's updated and talking to each other. And then I also have a slider that can work off my phone so I make sure that app's updated and then on with batteries and stuff I mean anything you can think that takes batteries you got to charge them up headlamps range finders so I put new batteries in my range finder I also make sure I have a good battery anyways that's a spare so I've got that my headlamps all of them are rechargeable now I've moved completely to rechargeable those capabilities have gotten way better in the, uh, lately. So, um, let's see what I've got here. So I have the black diamond, the storm are, which is the, the storm. I'm pretty sure is like their highest lumens that don't have like a external battery pack daily attached to them. Um, and then the R is for rechargeable. So that takes a mini, uh, usb which drives me nuts i which i wish like i'm in the process of taking everything over to usbc because like everything is going that direction i have so many usbc cables so um that one and then a petzel um the petzel not the elite the petzel actic core i really like those ones because You actually charge the battery itself. Like the battery itself has a mini USB port on it. So you can have like multiple batteries that are charged and then swap them like back and forth as you needed. So it's not just like an internal battery that stays and once it's dead, it's dead. And then the Petzl Actic Core, you can actually take that little battery pack out and put AAAs in it, which that's huge. Um, I would do that one over this black diamond just for that reason. Um, but I do have a black diamond that I'm recharging just like, so I have another headlamp just kind of around and yeah. So range finder, what else? My, uh, my stair pin also takes batteries and it's the stair pin adventure. So they take like CR one 23s. So make sure you have those. But in my experience, like if I put new batteries in at the beginning of the season, like I'm good with those things through the season, but I will have backups like in the vehicle just in case I go down. So that's like kind of some of the basic ones that's for like a checklist. Like, you know, you should do the, all the basic stuff like, well, I would say well in advance, like at least a week in advance, if not maybe a little bit longer, just so you have time to order stuff and for it to get to you to like repair or, rebuild some of your kit stuff. Like I'll go through my backpack and like make sure all the pockets are on it that I like. And I didn't take them off and put them on something else during like a smaller bag when I was guiding or whatever. So just make sure, you know, all that stuff is rolling. All right. So with that, I'll just like dive, uh, dive right into the gear list. So, uh, like a couple of bags that I really like using, um, FHF gear just came out with a couple, well, they have some duffel bags coming. I think one of them is out right now, the 60 liter. And I have a couple of those and that duffel bag design is probably the best duffel bag design I've ever seen. It like It zips and then you can clip the sides down. So it still remains pretty small. But then when you unclip the sides and unzip it, it literally turns into a huge hole. So like you can really open it up and like see everything in there. And it's the best duffel bag design truly I've ever seen in my life. And so taking a couple of those because they are, they're like waterproof or at least water resistant. I think that the zipper is waterproof though. Um, something to check on, but those are awesome. And then like those Yeti Panga waterproof bags, I take those too. So, um, quick, I guess this is not, this is, we don't really know what this hunt's going to be yet. It could be a camping at the end of a road and doing kind of a base camp and just day hiking out of there, or, um, it could turn into a backpack hunt. So keep that in mind as I go through this. I'm kind of pretty versatile. Like some of the stuff I'm taking, like I'm bringing a small cot, which I wouldn't backpack with, but I'll put it in a side-by-side to take it to the end of a road. So, um, keep that in mind as we do this, like that's going to be coming. Like I'll go through some of the vehicle can-am type stuff, but like definitely taking my defender because I I love that thing and is so handy for stuff like this saves wear and tear on your, your good vehicles and you can just rip down a road so much quicker. So I'm going to take that for sure. And I think we're going to be using it a bit. So anyways, back to, yeah, duffel bags. So that's why I was talking about it. I can shove like all the camping stuff in one of those duffel bags and throw it in the back of side by side. I just don't got to worry about it. So going to do that. Um, clothing, obviously, uh, all first light clothing. I've got, you do have to wear orange in Wyoming. So I've got my SIG orange hat, just a ball cap. And then I do have, I think it's the first light, the furnace beanie, which is an awesome beanie. Love it. And so that's what I'll do for orange and kind of my headwear. And then otherwise 308 pants staple, got to have them. I'll take, uh, the wick, uh, three quarter base layer Merino bottoms to put underneath if I need. And then, um, the new all season Merino wool socks, um, from first light. I talked about those before, but those are like they're USA made socks, which you have to love. And then of course I'll have puffy pants and then I'll have, uh, the, I'll have rain pants as well. Probably going to end up being the omen rain pants, the heavy ones. It's supposed to rain. a whole bunch, which is, does not make me super happy, but it'll be fine. And, uh, for tops like rain jacket, again, probably going to be the omen might be a new one, um, that I've been wearing. And then I just can't talk about it yet. And then my basics, wick hoodie, or I don't think it's going to be hot. I did throw in a wick tee t-shirt. I don't think it's going to be cold enough. I'm just going to do wick hoodie. Um, the new navigator hoodie. I love that thing. Um, people, they let us wear them, but, uh, people were asking me about it literally all the time. And I just couldn't like say what it was called, but, uh, now I can, cause it's out the navigator hoodie. It's literally like for everyday wear plus like any of the hunting stuff. Um, it's a higher performance hoodie. It's awesome. So that, um, probably like a Brooks down vest, just knowing what our temperatures are going to be like. And then, uh, the new suppressor shop, a soft shell jacket. I'll bring that. There's also a vest. I'll bring two that I might swap off with the Brooks, just depending on what our temps end up being. And then the Ankh foundry jacket, which the cool thing about the Ankh foundry jacket is if it's going to be cold and we're sitting, it's going to be also be raining all the time. I don't have to put a rain jacket over the top of that. I can just take it. And then of course, like I will bring a puffy jacket, probably just the unc jacket and swap kind of with the, the foundry as I need. But if I were going to, if we're going to backpack in, like that is what I'm taking is what I just went through. The wick hoodie, navigator hoodie, um, the Brooks vest, probably still the suppressor soft shell just because of, um, I don't know because I like it. It's comfy. And then the Ankh Foundry jacket. That's what I'd be taking. And for boots, going to do the Crispy Brickstool EFX boot. That's a new boot for this year, but it's basically just your standard non-insulated Brickstool leather. The best boot ever invented. is what it is. There's a tons of variations on that Brixton line. Now they have a new Alpine pro, which looks awesome. It's a super stiff flex. That'd be for, you know, rough high country mule deer, um, sheep go stuff like that. Anybody that just kind of prefers a stiffer boot. I prefer stiffer boot. Um, I, you know, I haven't had issues with this now that I'm looking at my ankle in a while, but I rolled my ankle real, real bad. Um, when I was filming for television and, um, stiff boots really seemed to help me not tweak that, but I just kind of noticed this last year. I didn't really notice it, but truly like it's been a problem for 10 years. Um, but the stiff boots kind of helped that. So anyways, yeah, the Bristol EFX boot gonna take that bad boy. I did not put gators down. Um, I'm going to take them, but I just don't like them. I just don't like gators in general. Um, but I'm going to take them because it is supposed to be wet and they do certainly help when it is conditioned such as that. So that's clothing. That'll wrap up clothing for the most part. Um, pack doing the, uh, trustee far duplex frame. I love that thing. And I got a new, new bag from Kefaru that I'm going to be doing a review on for rock slide that I'm going to be wearing on this trip. And then sleep system. So for a tent, like I said, we're probably going to be doing like some tent camping, kind of roadside camping type stuff. We might even just throw everything in the side-by-side and burn down to the end of a road. So for that, I just got the Argali six-person, the cell weight tent. And I set it up in the yard the other day and it is... Very spacious. I got the half... I actually think it comes with this stuff, but the main tent, a half insert, which will be a floor and netting, which will be good for ticks. If there's ticks around, yuck. And then... What else? Yeah, take the titanium stove... for sure um that thing's always nice and then there's just so much room in for that like leah and i can stay in the tent and then i mean jayden can stay in there too if he wants or like that could just be kind of like the hangout we can have a fire the whole nine so i like that but yeah so half insert and then the liners to help a little bit with condensation especially with that new and upcoming green grass if we're going to be camped on that condensation can be a a sucker. So going to take that. But also if I end up doing a, if we end up backpacking in, I've got, um, the trustee, our golly four person tent with that half insert. And that's what we would backpack in with. Okay. Um, cooking stuff going to take the MSR reactor, um, Love that stove. Um, especially for like multiple people just like boil so fast. It's a little bit bigger pot. So take that. And then just, we're doing just basic peak refuel meals, basic snacks, drink mixes, and all the things, um, instant coffee. Of course, we'll take some tea as well. And for those, I'm going to take, um, I'm going to throw in, like, we usually do the little GSI backpacking. um, like ultra light cups and we'll do that if we backpack in, but if not, like don't screw around, just take some Yeti cups of some kind, just keep stuff warmer for so much longer. And if we ended up backpacking in, I'm also going to take like my MSR pocket rocket deluxe with titanium cup. Um, I did a video, I should do another video and talk about that little kit more, but that thing is so light. I mean, you're talking without a cup or without like a little four ounce canister of fuel, just the stove and that cup. I mean, I'm at like four ounces or five ounces for the whole thing. It's unreal. So that's nice to backpack in or even just take it with you. Like these are going to be late nights. So just take it with you, eat dinner on the mountain, have some coffee up there. It's just light and compact enough to do that with. For water stuff, just using me personally anyway, I'm just going to use Nalgene bottles or the Yeti Yonder bottle. I really like the Yeti's version of a Nalgene because all these Nalgene pockets for these packs are all made so the Nalgene snugly fits in. Well, the Yonder bottles are just a smidgen smaller not as round as that, not as big round wise. And so they slide in and out of this water bottle deals way easier. So like that. And where am I at here? Okay. Yeah. And then I'll do like a stair pen for treating water. Um, springtime it's running off. Like I would imagine there's ample water kind of everywhere. So I think that that will work good. Um, And then I just put new batteries in that as I have marked here to make sure I did. And I did. And then if we do backpack in, I have an MSR 10 liter water bladder that has a gravity flow filter on it that I really like. And then also if we're just going to do camping, like roadside stuff, just like big plastic water jugs. And I'll probably just buy a case of water too, just because. for that kind of stuff. Um, okay. Optics, um, obviously like big SIG fan. I think I've, um, I think maybe I said that already in this thing, but yeah, big SIG fan. So running all their stuff, uh, the Zulu 10, 10 by 42 binoculars, um, fantastic binocular. Um, I have the outdoorsman stud so I can put it on the bino post and put it on my, my tripod. Um, So I've got that. I'm going to run the Kilo 8K range finder, which I have a new battery in and an extra battery. And then the Oscar 8, the 80 millimeter spotter. Love just having a spotter in general, but for filming purposes, filming through it is huge. And so I do that with just my iPhone and the all-in digiscoping adapter. So I have the all-in case on it. And then the spotting scope has the adapter on the eyepiece. And literally, if you haven't seen one of those things yet, it's a magnet and it literally magnets to it, um, to your phone. So it's like a perfect alignment every time it's so easy. And I love it a lot. Um, so if you're looking to film through scope, that's the way to do it. And then, uh, for a tripod, I'm using the outdoorsman's, the carbon tripod, uh, standard, and I'm using the outdoorsman's pan head 2.0, uh, as well, which I've been using the pan head from them forever. I love it. It's compact, still holds a lot of weight, especially the new 2.0 holds way more weight than the old one did. And the 2.0 has the ability to do the outdoorsman's plate or the ARCA. And you can do them like literally the same time, like you can, the head has both of them built into it, which I really like. Um, for, I mean, just ARCA in general, like all my camera stuff is ARCA. All of, um, my spotting scope stuff kind of for the most part is the outdoorsman's plate, but I am using a new system from all in called the Nexus, um, adapters. And basically they're like quick adapters for your spotting scope, tripod cameras, whatever you want to put on them. Um, it's like a magnet, um, like magnets down and you twist it on to lock and then it's on there forever or not forever but you know what i mean it's like set on there and it's awesome i think especially if you have like a group of people or a couple different people that have different heads that they really like but maybe they don't mesh like um some of like the camera only heads that i use are like siriu makes them or siru or however you say it and then those are like all arca and then i use the outdoorsman's for all my hunting stuff um and then that has outdoorsman's plate or like now the arca which is nice but before when i only had the outdoorsman's plate you there's a compatibility issue and i think people that run in groups and stuff and hunt together all the time run into that everybody has their own preference for a head but they all might take a different plate And then you can't interchange scopes. Like I can't throw my scope to Leah and be like, yo, look at this with through this scope or whatever. Cause she'll be like, ah, I can't use it. It won't work. Um, this Nexus system, it's like quicker to put it on, but then it's also going to standardize like everybody's tripods, which is what it's done for me. It's standardized everything from the cameras to the scopes and then through all the heads. And then I can, put them all on, which, um, like we can interchange and use each other's scopes and whatever. And it just works pretty damn good. So you can, yeah, look at that. If you're interested, that's, that's a new thing that that's why I talked about it more is because it's new. Okay. Then rifle setup. So run the SIG cross as usual, six, five Creedmoor. My cross, it is standard, uh, Um, but we did put a 20 inch proof research barrel on it, which is awesome. Carbon fiber. And so, yeah, running six, five Creedmoor. Um, I'm running the Sig Elite Hunter, like the box ammunition, but it is, there are 140 grain acubons. Um, I just looked at, I need to go re-zero and re-data my rifle for this. Cause I've been running the one thirties in it this last year. But, um, last time I was running, um, the one forties through it, I was running at 25 80 for my feet per second velocity. And so there's that, um, with the gun, I did add a salmon river solutions, a full length Arca. And then at the very end, it goes to a Picatinny rail. It's all one piece ultra light, just like put it on there with M locks and it's legit. I can run, I can put my gun on my tripod cause my tripod is has the Arca, which is sweet. And then I can have my bipod in the end. And it's just, yeah, it works, works really well. I like that. And then for my bipod, I'm going to run the Atlas. I love that thing. And then I am taking a new ultralight rear bag coming from an awesome company. You've heard from me talk about a lot, but I love it. And shooting suppressed, of course, we've got a six suppressor on there. And then the, soft case from FHF gear I have it I did a video on this a while back on my Instagram but I literally have it on it's inside my can-am like behind my head kind of attached back there slide my rifle in and out of it keeps it out of the gunk keeps it out of from where we're all going to be so that is my rifle system trying to think I just don't think that oh the scope jeez What are you doing, Jordan? The Tango DMR scope is what I'm running on it. 318. Love that power range. I have a sniper level on it as well for leveling. So yeah, I think that covers that. And then bino harness, the FHF fob. I've been running that. It's a forward opening magnetic bino harness. I love the design of it. I would like to think, I mean, they did ask me some things about bino harnesses and I put my two cents in and I would like to think that that transferred over into a couple of things that they've got on this thing, but they just came out with the black one. I have had, I literally own one fob harness. Leah has one, but I have one that I got. It's a it's the pre-production prototype one that I got like maybe a year in advance of them coming out. And I've still been running that for, I don't know, they've been out for a couple of years and I've been running that thing and I love it so much, but then they just came out with a new color black and I was like, gotta have it. I mean, the black just looks pretty sweet. So, um, yeah, so I've got the, the harness that holds the binos and then you can put these things, they call wings. on the side of them that make them, um, so you can attach like different pockets and stuff pretty easily. So I have, what am I doing here? Okay. Uh, so I have my range finder pocket on my right side and then also on the right side, but on the vinyl harness on the right side is the, um, three round rifle holder, which is nice just for like, you know, you have lose mag or you need to single feed or whatever, you've got three rounds right there with you all the time. And then on my left wing, I have the E3 pocket, which is basically just like a possibles pocket. Um, I've got my wind checker in there. I have my outdoorsman's bino, um, the, the adapters that my binos go into. So I can put them on my tripod and I have a little, like just a little Phelps diaphragm call. You literally, you can do anything with those things. You can make any noises. And sometimes it's better, in my opinion, to make a natural noise versus making, saying, yelling, hey, which I've done multiple, multiple times. It's just yell, hey, to make them stop or to do something. Yeah, that's where I keep my extra range finder battery. And then I do have my headlamp in there. my headlamp never ends up staying in there though. It, uh, always usually ends up making it into my pants pocket or I just throw it in the lid of my pack. So there's that. And then, yeah, on the left side as well, attached to the vinyl harness is the, uh, their sidekick pouch, but it literally fits an inReach mini perfectly. So that's, what's in there is my inReach. And then, uh, they just came out with this cool new thing. It's a foam pocket, uh, So it's a pocket you can slide your phone into obviously, but it goes behind that E3 pocket. It will go behind any pocket. But I put mine behind the E3 pocket. Just it's a little more slimmer that way instead of putting it by my range finder. And so I can put my phone over there, which is good. They also like have the slot behind the vinyl harness, like behind where you'd put your in the back of your harness that a phone will slip into easy. I use that sometimes too. I use them both. And then the front pockets, like a front zippered stretchy pocket. In the front, I have my tags, a lighter chapstick, and then I have a mini scalpel knife that like literally tiny. And then inside the pocket or the little folding thing with all my tags in it, I put a couple extra scalpels. And that's just... I like having that. It's, it's nice to have that tiny little sharp sucker for, um, like even if you get like stickers or something just to have like a mini scalpel blades kind of nice. So you're not using a knife that you just like, you know, cut a stick with or whatever. And so that's a good reason to have it. And then second reason, it's really nice for like doing the head of an animal. It's nice having that little scalpel.

Um,

And then, uh, I do have the, because we're going into, there are grizzly bears around and it's bear hunt. So I do have bear spray and I put that on the bottom of the pack. One thing I like about that is I face it to the right. And then the bottle, the spray part is actually spraying. It's going to spray like forward. So that's the way it is. And then it's on my right side. Cause that's my dominant hand. So I can flip the, thing off and i can literally spray it from the pocket i don't have to take it out so that that's something to think about as well as like how you have that thing set up and is it usable and i'm also bringing a gun um i am going to bring the um i have a sig x10 comp um So it has a compensator on the front. It's also compact. It's a little bit more compact, shorter barrel than the standard X10. Holds 15 rounds. That's a lot for a 10 mil, I feel like. And I do have a Romeo X-Pro Red Dot on it. And that also has backup sights. It has rear sight um, built in. So you can see your front sites, which is, um, nice shooting the 220. I'm pretty sure they're 220 grain. Um, they're the Buffalo bore hard cast. And I'm running that in a Northwest retention chest holster. I'm a big fan of those chest holsters because, um, oftentimes I sit down and take my vinyl harness off. If we're going to be sitting for a long time, or you're doing stuff around camp, you take your vinyl harness off. So you're going to have, um, So you don't have it out there. And then you, if you have something attached to your bino harness and you take, then you, you're taking your gun off. But, um, FHF, they came out with like a new kind of new idea for a, a, a pistol system on your bino harness and, um, you can change it to wherever you want. So it's kind of a, it's a quick detach system that, I'm going to try to explain it, but you'll just have to like get on and kind of see how it works. So there's like a tactical company that uses, they use discs. So it's basically a disc is like your adapter that goes into, let's say like a receiver, the receiving end of the adapter can be put on literally anything in kind of any sort of mounting way. So basically what you can do is you can have whatever holster you already have, you can put the, this disc on it. And I mean, these Kydex holsters, like if you don't have holes for it, you can go screw or you can go drill some holes in it. Like that's literally what I did for Leah's, um, X10 to, to have it all set up for her. Um, So you put this disc on whatever Kydex holster you already have for your gun, and then you can then take the receiving end of that adapter, and you can have multiple of those receiving end adapters to put wherever you want. You could have one on your pack belt. You could have one on this FHF system of being under your bino harness. You can put one, like you can have one for your hip belt or for your like belt belt, not your hip belt, but your, like your belt that you have. There's a tons of different ones that you can get. And with that disc, you can bounce between all of them. So the idea being like, all right, you know, I am, you know, hiking a bunch with my pack on, like I'm going to put my gun on my pack belt. So you've got it there. And then like, oh, I'm going to take my pack off and I'm going to go Sit down in glass, take it off your hip belt and it slides right into the system that's on your bino harness. Or I'm going to take my pack belt off and I have this little adapter that slides into my pant waistband. Like you can put it there. So that system is frigging sweet. Like being able to change, like I don't mind having one on my bino harness, but I just tend to take it off and then I don't have it. And I don't mind having one on my hip belt but then I take my pack off and then I don't have it. So that system is probably one of the best that I've seen come out as far as being able to like put it wherever you want quickly, easily. And then like that system is just, it's good. You'll just have to check it out if you're interested in it. Um, okay. Some, some kind of other things like that. I didn't know where to put them. Um, so our golly tracking poles, um, Um, our golly game bags. And then I have a knife from some beta custom knives that I like a lot. The handle glows. Um, it is a custom knife and it's, um, gosh, what's the new fancy steel that everybody likes to run? Man, it'll come to me, but I don't, but that's what that blade is. And it's just like short. It's, Freaking sweet. So, um, the knife, uh, sit like bench made bug out pocket knives when I always have clipped on, um, sunglasses, of course, got my hat, um, uh, ear protection. Like I have a couple different kinds of ear pro, like even though I'm shooting suppressed, like there still is a crack. And especially if I'm at the range or if I have time, I'll put one in because especially those walkers, um, you can, um, you can hear through them and they're not like the big Walker. Like they also make ones that are like big headphones. These ones actually, it's like a little black deal that like goes around your neck and hangs on your neck. And then there's little earbuds that retract out of that. And then you can, they're powered so you can turn it on and you can, you know, talk to people and like enhances things. And then when you shoot, it blocks it out. So I really like those. And then, um, Sometimes like I also have just like a basic set of earplugs that like you put them in hot water and they like mold to your ear. So I'll take those sometimes too. Um, but obviously those are way more basic. I wouldn't be so sad if I lost them, which is one of the reasons I use them. Um, but they, they're not powered or anything. They're just basically set at your pro. Um, So that, and then a tarp. I didn't put that in here. I will take the stone glacier, the flat tarp. I don't remember how big it is, but it's supposed to rain, which is unfortunate. So having that, that I can pitch up with trekking poles and kind of get everybody under it. It's nice and get out of the rain, especially with camera gear. And okay. Like a possibles first aid kit. I'm not going to get too deep into this. I do carry a tourniquet. Um, just carry some cordage or some basic like tenacious tape, meds, band-aids, simple bandages with like some neosporin. Like I can get into all that later, but, um, just like, you know, you got to have it with you, but keep it basic. And then, um, charging stuff. So I have tons of stuff to charge, so I need cables for all of it. So we're talking mini USB, USB-C, iPhone, make sure now that everything is going like basic USB or USB-C, make sure that the receiving end of your charger is all correct as well. It's getting more and more confusing, I swear, but yeah, mini USB, USB-C, iPhone cable, make sure all the cables are good. I use those dark energy, just the 10,000 milliamp packs. They call them their Poseidon chargers. I usually take a couple of those with a solar panel and then I can kind of alternate like using one while the other one charges. And then they also came out with, um, a little 3000 charger that actually is mag safe compatible. So it can snap to the back of your phone. Um, or it can also just, you can do USB-C to whatever. Um, but it's really small fits in my vinyl harness, like in that E3 pocket, like real easy, um, And then you just have something to take around with you all the time. Um, just like during the day. And then usually when I get back is when I use the bigger packs and recharge everything. But I talked about it before, like I've rechargeable everything, the headlamps, um, my Garmin watch is rechargeable. The inReach is rechargeable. Um, my camera batteries, I have a USB, uh, camera battery charger, um, I can plug into those and charge camera batteries. I also have some rope lights from Last Light, or I have a couple of like little lantern lights from Goal Zero as well. And those are rechargeable. So all them things. And then I did put in here too, I do have a Goal Zero, like a lithium battery pack. That's like a big, like it has a handle. I mean, the thing is, like you're obviously not backpacking with it. It's, um, quite large, but for rolling in on the side by side or keeping in a vehicle to like recharge when you get back, like they're awesome. Um, I also have a panel for it so I can set up a panel if we do like a base camp and we can have power for years. Um, and then, so coolers, like I will bring a Yeti cooler for like the bear meat and hide, but, uh, I usually bring like another cooler that has ice in it with like drinks and some snacks and like, yeah, yada, yada, especially if we're doing, um, roadside camp. And we usually bring, we'll try to do like some kind of like a frozen meal. Like if we make spaghetti one night, we'll just vacuum seal it and then freeze it. And then you can warm that back up. Um, and I usually have all that in a cooler, but I just got a Dometic fridge freezer and And that thing, it's basically, it's like the size of a cooler. Um, the one that I got, I mean, you know, the size of like a, it's almost like maybe a little shorter than like a Yeti 110, but one side's a freezer, one side's a fridge. It is a 12 volt system and they, um, I have a battery pack for that as well. You could plug that into a goal zero easy. Um, but you can plug that in or you can plug it into a solar panel and it's, So it just eliminates ice, eliminates water being kind of covered, covering everything, and then gives you the option of a freezer for some of those freezer meals, especially like if it's going to be hot, like some of these early like antelope hunts and stuff. Like I'm so excited to use that because I can put it literally in the backseat of the pickup, keep it plugged in. And then we've got things cooled and then we don't really have to worry about um, like ice retention for multiple days, being away from, from any place to free stuff. So that Dometic is going to be sweet for that. Um, okay. So, and I talked about it, like taking the can defender. Um, I have like some of the stuff I've done too. I do have like a toolbox in the back. It's like a plastic rotomolded type thing that has wings on both sides that open up. And, um, That's an awesome place to put kind of everything, all of like my things that I've got. So, um, tow rope, bottle Jack, um, you know, like a four way, what am I doing here? Yeah. Just like a, um, a four, a tire iron. Jeez. I should just actually read my list here. So, um, yeah, so, uh, I've got a tow rope that it does have a winch. So I do have that going for me, but do you have a tow rope? to extend that out a little bit and bottle jack, a tire plug kit, a four-way or, um, yeah, a tire iron, um, and avalanche shovel. So this is one thing that's pretty cool, like for snow and stuff, like you want a snow shovel, but those little avalanche shovels are like, they're just more compact and they're obviously meant for moving snow. So, um, those things are handy to have anywhere, like in your vehicle, in a side-by-side, especially like anything like that. And that one that I have it like actually the shovel or the handle breaks down. So it makes it even smaller. And I mean, hopefully it doesn't buckle under shoveling. But anyways, and then I also have like a mini shovel. I'll probably throw that in just because. And then I've got like a small axe. I've got a DeWalt battery chainsaw. Bring a couple different like five amp hour batteries for that. A little thing of bar oil for that. And yeah, I've got an extra belt for the side by side along with like just some like basic toolkit stuff for that. I have a small fuel can like a Rotopax that attaches to my, it's not a cage, but it's just like a back rack thing. I'll talk about that in a second. And then, yeah, I do have, I carry a jump pack with me as well from Uncharted Supply. I think they call it a Zeus. And that's another thing in the preseason checklist. Make sure that thing is charged up, topped off before you go out. Because, you know, they sit for a few months and they do kind of degrade after a while. But if something happens, I leave the radio on and the side-by-side or key on or who knows what could happen. Having that battery pack can be damn handy and they're real little as well um so yeah so the can-am and then i put a back rack on it as well when we go on our hunts or i um i usually do anyway and basically what that does is it just like puts a rack back there that gives you another deck so you'll have like two decks um we're packing in stuff so we're going to be able to put more stuff back there um as far as camping gear. And then there's going to be three of us total. So it's going to be a little clampity, but it's going to be great. So that's nice for stuff like that. And then they literally with their system, like you put the rack on and then there's just like these quick adapter deals that lock the thing on. So it's not like a big job to take it on and put it off to put it on and take it off. I should say. So that's some of the lists I have for camping. the can-am and then, um, taking the black trailer obviously to put the can-am in. And so some things that I have, uh, for the trailer in my vehicle type stuff, um, some of this is, you know, doubles, but I got a jump pack and then I also have jumper cables. I have a tow rope. Um, I have a scissor jack and a bottle jack in there as well as the jack that came with the vehicle. Um, tire iron I also have a deal they call I think they call it a monkey wrench and it basically is an extendo breaker bar type thing that comes with um sockets that they're actually like double-sided somehow um they're like double-sided sockets that it will fit any vehicle and the reason I like those is they're like deep sockets so basically you know, some of these like vehicles that have rims that you like, can't fit a regular tire iron into, um, cause it's too fat. These sockets will go into. So I always like just keeping them, keeping them with, uh, yeah. Toro jacks, tire iron. Yeah. Tire plug kit. Of course. Um, I do have like a little D wall air compressor, um, That will run off 12 volts. So it'll run off your vehicle or it'll run off the Dewalt batteries as well. So that thing is always nice to have. I do like a full socket set and then I've got, you know, just some basic tools. And WD-40, of course, you have to have that. And then I've got gas cans on here as well. And then a diesel can. I have a diesel heater in that black trailer so we can fire that thing up. if we want to warm up a bit so and then there's like some other basic stuff like with the trailer that I won't even go into because we've got like its own stove and like gotta bring like a bottle of propane and just like some things I won't get into that I gotta do there but that pretty much wraps it up trying to think of anything that I've missed I'm sure there's plenty um But yeah, just trying to like, I mean, I haven't even got into all the camera gear. It's kind of ridiculous, but that should pretty much cover it for like my basic list. Some of the preseason checklist covered some elk hunting stuff. Some of the Turkey hunting stuff. Yeah. I would just say that this is kind of my, this is the, my, the spring hunt that I have this year. I'm excited to see, get up into the mountains and, you know, try some of this new gear out and yeah, just kind of get up there and reset. We've been real busy this spring. Um, calving is, it consumes me for the month of March and April and half of February now. So yeah, got through that. Luckily we're about to turn, um, Everything's about to get turned on grass and bulls put out and stuff. So yeah, things are going to start. And then we got turkey season out of the way now. So things will start lighting it up for me a bit and I'll be able to do more videos and just kind of dive in more on my gear stuff that I love to do. So more stuff, more stuff coming in.
