unknown

I'm doing great.

SPEAKER_04

Good. And uh I remember that interview was kind of uh very interesting. I just came up here throwing the well, how'd you describe it?

SPEAKER_02

I was like, just throw them a nautica, and you come up and videoed out the quarterfile. I was like, oh my gosh, who is this guy?

SPEAKER_04

Who is this weirdo?

SPEAKER_03

And we're dancing, so we're just like, yeah, keep dancing.

SPEAKER_04

Um before we kick into about softball, uh, Nautica, kudos. You uh had a strong finish to your basketball season this year.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, senior season. How's that make you feel? I mean, pretty good, right?

SPEAKER_03

I'm not a senior.

SPEAKER_04

You're not a senior. Why do I think you're a senior? I know you're a senior, right?

SPEAKER_03

It's because I hang out with like Now and Cammy and all the.

SPEAKER_04

You're always with him, so I guess I just assumed you were a senior. You're a junior?

SPEAKER_03

I'm a junior.

SPEAKER_04

So Baxter's got you one more year in basketball.

SPEAKER_03

Yep.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, well, since before we kick in the softball, Jordan threw him under the bridge and said that he takes like 30 showers even before the game he changes his outfits. Is there anything else about Baxter we can uh call him out on?

SPEAKER_03

Well, Campbell's really gonna like this one. He has these really cringy quotes he gets off the internet, and he even has an app that he uses, and the best one is the best one ever was Bounce Like a Ball. And we make fun of him for that because we were fixing to play a game and he was like, Come on, girls, let's bounce like a ball. And I sit in the locker room and I started crying, laughing, and I didn't want him to get mad at me, so I was just like kind of covering my face, and he looked at me, he's like, Why are you crying? And I start dying laughing. I couldn't help it. Everybody started dying.

SPEAKER_02

I love watching him walk through school with his different outfits on. And the other day he came in with like an all-blue sweat, and he had on like royal blue Nike dunks, and he looked like a blueberry. I was like, Oh my god. I said, Wow, nice fit you got on there.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, sometimes we'll tell him he has a nice fit, but he doesn't know we're being a smart aleck. I love you, Baxter.

SPEAKER_04

We love you though, bro. We love you. I had to ask, I had to ask. That's hilarious. All right, let's get into some softball. How about that? Um, if someone was watching this and they didn't know about Southwestern uh Randolph softball, how would you describe it?

SPEAKER_03

Or it went in tradition.

SPEAKER_04

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

That was good. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

That was good.

SPEAKER_03

That's what we're known for.

SPEAKER_04

That was uh you nailed it out of the parking. Or the slap hit, right? You just walk up and slap it.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah. So mine's not going very far.

SPEAKER_04

You got good slap hit?

SPEAKER_03

I do slap hit. Okay. I don't hit right hand. I used to hit right-handed, and then they switched me my eighth grade year, and I've been slapping ever since.

SPEAKER_04

So you have to be a lefty to slap, right? Yeah. See, I look I learned something last year. Look, see?

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Cammy laughed at me the whole time when I was doing that. You know, I saw I have a video of her that I filmed where she's on the third base. I guess y'all just scored. She looks back and she's like, I don't know if you remember that in the highlight video.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I always get pumped.

SPEAKER_04

That's gotta be special. So y'all part of that state championship run in 0424, right? Oh yeah. How was that? Talk about that season, the culture, the fun you had with Strider and all them, and uh the OG himself, uh Chapman.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah. Man, the atmosphere I really think is like grown me as an athlete. Like, I don't think I'd be where I am without that season.

SPEAKER_02

That was un that was just unforgettable. Like it was crazy. It was a crazy feeling being there, going through it. It was crazy. I can't even I feel like I can't even describe it.

SPEAKER_03

We really we really were talking about it at practice today. Like, we had did not have like crazy talent on our team in our freshman the 2024, my freshman year. But like our mentality really carried us through that season.

SPEAKER_00

Wow.

SPEAKER_02

I remember I was like, we were going through it, and Toby kept saying stuff about like winning, like going to the state championship. I thought, God, this guy's crazy. Like, we are not winning this at all. We could barely hit the ball. Yeah. And then when we beat West Wilkes, there was one base runner all game for us, and they had base runners on all the time. Like they would get bases loaded with no outs and not score.

SPEAKER_00

Oh wow.

SPEAKER_02

And I was thinking, dang, and then Madeline hit a leadoff triple, and that was the only run we scored. After we won that game, I was like, dang.

SPEAKER_03

After Alyssa's sacrifice hit.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. After that, we knew.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, so y'all had no no no you didn't think y'all were gonna win state. It's okay to me.

SPEAKER_02

No, no, not. Oh no, I thought Toby was crazy.

SPEAKER_03

I was like Well, I like after like that week where we like lost every game, I was like, a lot of us were defeated. And Toby always says something, it's like, what is it? Yesterday is in the past, tomorrow's a mystery, live in the present.

SPEAKER_04

Sounds like a fortune cookie.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, his quotes are amazing. But they genuinely help. Yeah, they're not.

SPEAKER_04

Are they better than the maxers?

SPEAKER_03

Yes. Yeah. But like we could have came to practice that week after. Like, I just got done writing a paper about this for school, the state championship. And why not us? Not letting somebody else's expectations control your outcomes. And after we lost that, like the week straight of us losing, like, we could have came to practice and just been done already. But we weren't. Like we wanted we wanted to be better. And we like we had three hour practices that week, and not even on purpose. We never noticed.

SPEAKER_02

Got carried away. And we worked on bunting. I don't even like every single day of the week of live pitching. And I vividly remember one time he put the net so close to us and threw the ball, and we were about to play North Stanley and was throwing the ball high like it was gonna rise like that. It was getting bad because we weren't hitting it. He was like, This is what y'all were gonna see if we were standing there like just swing before he even loads back. I mean, he was like from me to you, like he was so close. I was like, What are we doing?

SPEAKER_04

So, what is Toby and Chapman like?

SPEAKER_03

Oh, Toby's great. Chapman's the like the low-key coach that like absorbs and takes. He's just soaking in, like, yeah, he really absorbs that and he's great on first base. When you get there, you just get that fist bump and he knows you just know like he's locked up.

SPEAKER_04

No, he was my football coach at my freshman year.

SPEAKER_03

No way.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah. He was the he was the quarterback coach at Ashburg. Yeah, and his son was the JV head coach. Oh, that's what's funny. So every time I see him, I laugh, I'm like, hey, there's a quarterback coach. And I didn't know he was into softball like he is.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah. That's crazy. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_04

Who's the other? I'm I feel like I'm missing a coach.

SPEAKER_03

We have a bunch. Yeah. I think we have like four.

SPEAKER_02

Now we have more.

SPEAKER_04

Okay. I was saying because I last year when I filmed, I thought there was like three or four of them in the Dug It Out.

SPEAKER_02

Now we have, well, we had last year Kevin Healin.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Um, and Taylor Pugh. She helped a lot. She went to Lenoran. Okay. And now we got Heaven Maynis. She played at Wing It. She'll be in the hallway at all four years. Yeah. She was really good. Who else we got? We have Haley Epps.

SPEAKER_03

She does like our game on, like our game changer and stuff like that. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Well, it's funny is uh I feel like uh there's a our sponsor of this episode is just keep swinging. Um Curtis and Kelly Cole, you know. Oh my gosh, I love this. They're awesome. The swag. They do good swag. I mean, they they look at this hat. I mean, it's pretty good.

SPEAKER_03

It's great. It looks great.

SPEAKER_04

I know. I'm gonna use I have to use them for all my gear, man. They're they're awesome. But uh yeah, we were talking, I learned softball at that tournament. Were you you were there when I went to the knockouts, right? That was fun. I learned a lot. Uh, you were you on the knockouts or no?

SPEAKER_02

No, I'm actually on there this year.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, are you? Yeah, yeah. Did you recruit her? Don't lie.

SPEAKER_03

No, I didn't. I played, I mean, I told her she'd have more fun, but like I mean, it was obvious.

SPEAKER_04

But yeah, well, I'll I'll be there at that summer, same same tournament actually this summer. Really? Yeah, yeah, filming. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So watch it.

SPEAKER_03

We're gonna have a lot of fun.

SPEAKER_04

Oh gosh, I feel like I should mic y'all up secretly.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, we can't be micro.

SPEAKER_02

Me and Ani in the outfield is like insane. We were talking about that the other day at practice because Kenlin was like, let's mic each other up. I was like, I'm not gonna.

SPEAKER_04

Why? Why, Cammy? Why can't we mic you up? What are we gonna hear?

SPEAKER_02

There's I mean, there's no telling me.

SPEAKER_04

Monica, what are we gonna hear?

SPEAKER_02

Sometimes stuff just comes out of your mouth, you know?

SPEAKER_04

PG 13.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah. Like if the batter swings it one over the head, I'm like, oh my gosh, what is that girl swinging at? I just talk to myself in the outfit a lot.

SPEAKER_03

Sometimes I'll sing. Yeah, I sing.

SPEAKER_04

What's your go-to song?

SPEAKER_03

Oh Kurt, right now it's Sam Hunt, any Sam Hunt song right now. Take your time. Yeah, last year was my walkout song fancy. Oh, yeah. When I got up to my up to bat, leading off my walk-up song, I would sing it while I was playing.

SPEAKER_04

So, what's your walk-up songs this year?

SPEAKER_03

Uh Washed by Elevation Rhythm. Mine is my love by JT.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, okay. And y'all uh y'all y'all got a pretty good squad this year, wouldn't you say?

SPEAKER_02

Pretty talented.

SPEAKER_04

I heard y'all just picked up a player. Bristol?

SPEAKER_03

We picked up two players.

SPEAKER_04

Two players, okay. So you got Bristol and who else?

SPEAKER_03

Uh Caitlin West.

SPEAKER_04

Are they pretty solid players to the team?

SPEAKER_03

Absolutely, yeah. Absolutely.

SPEAKER_04

How would you describe this too? What they can bring to the team. Because you I mean, you guys have set a culture of winning, you know, it's consistent. Um, I remember when my brother went to Southwest, his senior year, junior year, y'all won state.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Um I would describe them as like hard workers. I mean, they definitely fit into the description of somebody that could play at Southwest. It's always a um like a team effort. They they're really good at doing that.

SPEAKER_04

It's gotta mean a lot though that like y'all y'all are saying this of something you built. I mean, you're a junior, correct? Yeah, yeah. And you're a senior. You're looking at this, and now you're like, okay, people wanna be a part of this. Like you've built, like, you you've have you had a losing season in your four years, Cammy?

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_04

That's pretty hard to do.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, not to be like, no, but no. I mean, we like we work hard every day. It's always about being the best teammate. Like we never like we never focus on like trying to be the best player, and I think that's what really like makes us a great team.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, and y'all had a pretty solid pitcher last year, Crutchfield. Uh, how's it gonna go this year without her? I know you're gonna miss her.

SPEAKER_02

We are gonna miss her tremendously, but I feel like growing, I feel like she's also helped us grow a lot, and I feel like Alyssa's growing a lot, and now that we have Kate, like that's a big thing. Chloe's growing a lot.

SPEAKER_04

And is Kate a pitcher? Yeah, she is.

SPEAKER_03

She's a pitcher and she plays first base.

SPEAKER_04

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

I think we're gonna be good. I think Alyssa's gonna really do good. She's I know she's locked in. She pitched in the Oak Grove game the other day, and she did great. Everybody did great. Yeah, Alyssa has like barely anybody here. No, barely in that game.

SPEAKER_04

I'll say I remember because that's that's some big shoes I feel. Because I mean, I feel like all three games I called of y'all's, and even the one I filmed, Macy had like daggum 14 strikeouts.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, she's a great pitcher. She had so many. She has so many strikeouts. And like I loved playing third with her because I could predict when the ball was gonna come down.

SPEAKER_03

That's why I love playing left field with her. I knew like if you pitch the pitches called, I knew exactly where to stand. Okay, I'm like, yeah, me and not.

SPEAKER_04

It was funny because Toby cracked a joke about when I did an interview with Macy. She's like, I don't know what she's gonna say, but you can you can't.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you never know. But she goes by dumber.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's dub. She's dumber.

SPEAKER_04

So y'all got y'all are pretty close in on that.

SPEAKER_03

Uh I'd say I'm a lot smarter than her.

SPEAKER_04

Oh wow.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Macy's gonna be listening to this. Yeah, she's you're gonna be seeing her soon. Isn't she at Kataba today?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, she is at Katawa.

SPEAKER_04

Congratulations. As we're filming this today, you committed to Kataba, right?

SPEAKER_03

I'm really excited about that.

SPEAKER_04

What made you want to go to softball instead of basketball?

SPEAKER_03

Oh, basketball's not my forte.

SPEAKER_04

I don't know. Nautica, you had a pretty good finish to your basketball season junior year.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's just softball's always been what I love, like the stuff you learn, the people you're around.

SPEAKER_04

It's just I like it's the atmosphere so much more than what's the old s the songs I remember they used to sing as like down by the river. You remember those?

SPEAKER_02

Our elementary school chant. Yeah. I love this. I love when we're like hitting live or something, or we're doing 21 ounce in practice, and Toby will be like, one down, two to go, one down two to go.

SPEAKER_04

He sings it. Yes, and Toby sings it.

SPEAKER_03

And he'll hit his little leg kit because you do a leg kit.

SPEAKER_04

Does he have the gator? He's driving it while you say one, two.

SPEAKER_02

But I played I've played for him since I was like six, five or six. Okay. And he used to do them when we were little. So it cracks me up when he does it. I'm like, oh my god.

SPEAKER_04

So y'all really have that love for Coach Strider.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I think my senior, my senior game this year is gonna be pretty hard. I genuinely don't know where I'd be as an athlete if I didn't have him as a head coach. Me either.

SPEAKER_02

I think he's one of the very few coaches that I've had. I think I've had one other coach that's played a different role in my life that's really important. But Toby's always the coach that no matter if you're not doing good or you're the best version that he's ever seen of you, he's always gonna be one of your biggest supporters.

SPEAKER_04

Were y'all there with Benji Cole? He's one of my favorites. Oh I love missing Benji Cole.

SPEAKER_03

I love Benji.

SPEAKER_04

Benji's my go-to. Uh I I coach at Nam's basketball, and he is my go-to all year. We probably talk once a week.

SPEAKER_03

He's the goofiest dude ever. He's our first base coach in the summer.

SPEAKER_04

Is he?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Oh my gosh, I love it. I that's that's what's so funny because him and Strider co-coaches on that knockouts team, right? Yep. That's hilarious. Yeah, Benji's a pretty funny guy. He'll crack some jokes. But yeah, that's so Toby means that once too. So what when did see I thought he would give it? I thought after this year maybe would be his last year, but I forget he has another one coming up.

SPEAKER_02

She does, she's a freshman.

SPEAKER_04

And like the the culture and the vibe, didn't y'all just the middle school just win it again, so it's just gonna keep rebuilding every year, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Did y'all win it in middle school as well?

SPEAKER_03

I have no idea. Yeah, we did.

SPEAKER_04

Well how do you not remember Nautica?

SPEAKER_03

Oh, wait, when we were there?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, we did.

SPEAKER_04

She's like, Yeah, maybe. I don't remember. I don't.

SPEAKER_02

My seventh grade year was COVID year, but I remember vividly we won, is it like called the conference championship? Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Uh my sixth and eighth grade year. I remember that.

SPEAKER_04

I got some awesome coaches. Uh that's kind of cool. They all have per different personalities. You got Baxter, Toby, Chapman, Coach Cole. Like there's gotta be Southwest has gotta be, you know, tug at your heart strength. Talk about the school as a whole and how much Southwestern Randolph high school means to you both.

SPEAKER_03

Um, I genuinely think it means a lot to me. Like, I when I think about the future, like I would like my kids together, like our teachers care about us a lot. Yeah, and they're very flexible. I mean, I learn a lot, I learned a lot at Southwest, so I'm being honest with you. And um, they're very supportive. They'll come to some games, and the their biggest thing is just being your biggest fan, and it makes you feel really good.

SPEAKER_02

It's so cool to like walk down the hallway and everybody be like, You got a game tonight.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, you know, even a new principle y'all got this year, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and he's very involved with sports. Yeah, so like I don't know if you're gonna be able to do it. That's hard to find. That's hard to find. Yeah, he's pretty involved, yeah. And which is really cool. But I remember the year we were going to the state championship, and they did it for soccer this year, too. Like, they call everybody out of class, and everybody lines up with the whole.

SPEAKER_03

You have to walk. Okay, well, they were playing a band for us, and we had to walk around in front of the whole school. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I figured you two would do something silly.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I did. I yelled the whole entire time. Maddie was like, Oh my goodness.

SPEAKER_03

But everybody was acting embarrassed. Yeah. It's like, dude, we're going to the state championship. They know me and Kimmy at this point. We're literally gonna say anything that comes to our mind.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and we don't care. Like, I could care less what anybody on the school thinks about me. Yeah. So I'm just like walking around that hallways yelling. Everybody's like, whoa! And then you got the quiet people.

SPEAKER_04

I feel like a lot of people are laughing that are listening to this podcast right now. They're like, this is this is Naika and Cammy.

SPEAKER_02

This is that. I told Naunica coming up here, I was like, this is gonna be a lot of personality. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I mean, it's it's funny because I feel like last year and just filming, and that's what people forget, when you have that video camera, you get to know these athletes like you two, and that's why I was like, these two would be the perfect to bring on. I was like, this would be the I was like, I ain't no telling what I'm gonna poor poor poor Medley, he's always got to edit for this. Uh he's probably gonna be laughing and like, oh Lord. Yeah. But I told I told him before y'all got here, I said, man, I said, I couldn't think of two better personalities to put together. Um, my first episode, I had Nivea and uh Naima. They were they were pretty, pretty good. Yeah, um, and then you two together, I knew. As soon as I had those two, I was like, man, softball season's here. I'm getting Nautica and Cammy. I hate, I couldn't get Maddie, but I'm gonna save her and bring her and Emery on together.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah, she's been talking about it. She was talking about it this morning in class.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I told him I said, let's push off and get a same schedule because I wanted you two together, and then I want Emery and her because I want them to talk smack.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, yeah, definitely not definitely happened. I'm not a good smack talker.

SPEAKER_04

Are you sure? Because I feel like you do. I see you in the zone. You're clap. I don't know if it's just you're excited, but I see you clapping and getting it.

SPEAKER_02

I feel like I clap and yell. And I mean, in the dugout, we we pretty much yell.

SPEAKER_04

You literally just told me, and I'm not gonna say on air what the what the saying is, but you know, that that's trash talk. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I like trash talk, like kind of like I'd be like, let's go, Lissa, but like I'm saying it in a really cocky way as to like strike this girl out.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like, but my trash talk's never like and unless I'm in the dugout. Like if somebody knows a ball in dirt, I'm like, dirty ball. Macy used to be the bitch.

SPEAKER_02

She would do this voice, and it was like, I can't do it because it like I can't. It's agitating.

SPEAKER_04

Try it, try it, Lissa. We gotta hear it.

SPEAKER_02

Dirty ball. That's that is exactly what it's like. Yes, and she'll like she used to open the gate and she would yell, and then she'll close it. And then she'd look at you like this. She'd go, she did something wrong.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it was what is Toby and then they're just like sometimes Toby will be like, hey, it depends on what we're saying. Don't do that again. Yeah, or like he really doesn't say much. He's really good about having fun and being serious at the same time.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, so he knows when when the line's drawn and when I would love to just have a mic in y'all's dugout because there ain't no telling what I'm gonna hear.

SPEAKER_02

I wish you had a mic on our dugout Oak Grove game. Oh yeah, it does.

SPEAKER_04

This year, the one that just happened?

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah, I think that was the loudest our dugout was gonna be good. Because that's how our travel team on their team and then on our team. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

So do y'all just have like code words to the other team that they know when you're talking smack? Or like because I feel like what y'all are saying to each other in the audience are probably like the crowds like, man, they're being ugly, but y'all are actually really just having fun at each other.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and I think the biggest game like that is random. Because I'll hear like like I have friends.

SPEAKER_04

You and Kenzie Ivey go after each other over there.

SPEAKER_02

Uh we yeah, we do yellow wall. We yell at railing to rivals. Addie D's, Kaylee, Kinsey. Okay, like we're all going back and forth, but we like them. Yeah, they're good too. Yeah, like me and Addy grew up playing together, and it's fun to play against them because like they're not taking it to heart. Yeah. But like the parents are like, dang, y'all are so obnoxious. Like, yeah. That's what we do.

SPEAKER_04

What's the fun as like I know we're getting a little further into this, but uh, what's the funniest memory that you have with softball? Each one of you, it's gotta be different. It could be the same, I guess, if it is.

SPEAKER_02

So I played for Toby when I was young, like 10U. That was like when we entered travel ball.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And like kids are just now pitching us. Well, me, Maddie Strider was on the team. There's some girls from Randoman. Kaylee, Katie Green, okay, was on the team.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, good athlete right there.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, yeah, really good. Haley Henshaw was on the team too. I don't think she plays softball anymore. Camden Scott was on the team.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

And Toby used to put in these teeth when we would do bad. Oh, yeah. And he would come out there and he would get mad, and he like his neck, you know, he's a redhead, his neck will turn red, and he's like, I'm grit my teeth. Y'all look like bad news bears out here. And he's got these fake teeth in. And if you go on his is a buckhorn shredder. Yes, buckhorn outdoors, he puts them in. I'm like, oh. He's kept them that long. Yeah. And he would wear them out there, and I'm vividly like that is hilarious. I used to think it was so funny.

SPEAKER_04

Oh my goodness. And uh, as we get close to wrapping up, um, I like to do a little fun thing. Um, it's it's like an icebreaker. I call them quick hitters, but in softball, I don't think there's really a quick hitter, I guess, unless you just swing for the first, you know, at bat. But uh, if you you can't think, you just gotta say off the top of your head.

SPEAKER_02

Oh gosh.

SPEAKER_04

And all right, you ready?

SPEAKER_02

I have to edit something.

SPEAKER_04

Who is the teammate most likely to forget their equipment?

SPEAKER_03

This was Macy Crutchfield. Yeah, this was Macy Crutch. She's not there in Crutchfield. She came to practice one day with nothing.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Nothing to practice.

SPEAKER_03

And she was crying.

SPEAKER_04

Oh no.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Who who's the teammate that'd be late for the bus?

SPEAKER_03

Probably me now. Yeah, now it's Nautica. Why?

SPEAKER_04

Why are you late for the bus?

SPEAKER_03

I just take naps and I get home. I don't have fourth block and I take naps and then I get lazy.

SPEAKER_02

And she'll roll up with like a whole tray of food in a to-go box. And it's like home cooked food. I'm like, bro, stop.

SPEAKER_03

Where did you get this food from?

SPEAKER_04

That's pretty good. Who uh what it the funniest. This isn't, I don't know if you I'm trying to think how I want to wear this one. Uh I have it right here. Let's see. Where we go. Who has the funniest player on the team this year?

SPEAKER_03

Wow, that's a lot of us. Yeah, it is. It's gotta be like me, Cami, Maddie. I think it's me and Maylee on the slide. Oh yeah, probably me, Cammy, and Mayley. Maddie chimes in a little bit. Maybe is hilarious. Maddie's funny one, but you have to like joke with her first.

SPEAKER_04

What do you mean, like this?

SPEAKER_03

Well, we start well, we'll really get out at get out at practice. Yesterday, I was slapping and Cammy was at third, and Maddie was at short, and I hit a ball, and Maddie backhanded it, and I was running really slow, for me, slow, and she got me out and I said, You just wait till I get back up. And I hit it to Cammy, and I crossed the bag, and I turned and I said, Yeah, die, boom. And then I said something else. And we were just that's like the biggest trash talkers, me, Maddie, and Kimmy, and then we started going scuba, scuba.

SPEAKER_02

We do it too much.

SPEAKER_04

Y'all's practices must be wild. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

That's when I was like, Where's sports in the borough right now? Yeah, according to our practices.

SPEAKER_04

Well, uh, my next one. All right, so um, what's the I'll never forget this moment?

SPEAKER_02

Oh man. Okay. When in West Wilks, Toby running out to the outfit and doing cartwheels.

SPEAKER_04

What? Yeah. Do we have any video of this video?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we do have a video. I have a video on my phone. Me too.

SPEAKER_04

We need to send that. Send that. We'll have to put that in here later when I see Toby doing a cartwheel.

SPEAKER_02

I will.

SPEAKER_04

Was it a good cartwheel? How would you rate it one to ten?

SPEAKER_02

A five.

SPEAKER_04

It was a little uh knees bend a little bit.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, hips got a bit off. I don't know. Mine's not that funny, but it's when we played North Stanley at home and went 14 innings, and I was in the outfield, and I was making plays that I genuinely cannot believe I made, and I made this one play, I'll never forget this movie. I made this one play and my body like twisted. And I got up and she's looking at me and she's like, Man, you never failed to impress me. And I just started laughing because I didn't even know how I caught the ball. Like it was a line drive, and my body like twisted in a weird direction. It's just a moment I'll never forget because that game was so crazy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I love going back and watching that.

SPEAKER_02

Because it was recorded on what was it? I don't know what it was recorded on. County sports or something.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

There's video of it.

SPEAKER_04

That's awesome.

SPEAKER_02

It makes me so emotional. Me too.

SPEAKER_04

How much how much came do you love softball?

SPEAKER_02

A lot. Like, there's so much stuff that I think about on a daily, or like when I'm not doing too great, it's so much stuff that I can like go back to and know, wow, like I wouldn't have this. Like, there's so many relationships I wouldn't have if it wasn't for softball. Just stuff like that. And like softball for me is very fun. I feel like I don't ever have a point where I'm like with Toby that I'm like, God, this isn't fun. Like it's always fun, no matter if you're doing good or bad. It's like this is fun. He's cracking jokes, you're cracking jokes. But even if you're not doing great, it's still that's the best part about the sport is you fail 99% of the time. Yeah. I've I always say, I heard one teammate when I was little, and her mom used to always say it's a game of redemption. Like, if you get up there, you're first about and strike out, well, go redeem yourself. You know, like Major League Baseball players get paid to hit a 300, that's three times out of ten. They're making big bucks. So, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

That's that's that's awesome. And uh, I mean, same same question for you, you talk off of it, but like the fact that you both are gonna go to the next level, what does that mean? That's gotta be something special. How did how did it come to did it come through the knockouts organization? Did it come through Toby? Like, what what how did you find out about these schools and how did you end up getting your offers?

SPEAKER_03

Do you want to go first?

SPEAKER_04

Okay, jinx.

SPEAKER_02

So I started going to Wingett um when I was about 11. Okay. So it's it's been a while. Like when Coach Stancliffe first got there, she's not there anymore. But I had gone every single year, and I remember my mom telling me my first camp, she was like, I want you to go to the school, like it's beautiful. And I'd never really heard of it. I was little, you know. When you're little, you're like, Oh my goodness, I want to go to UF. I don't want to go that far.

SPEAKER_04

Why Catawba?

SPEAKER_03

Um, so I don't know how much of it.

SPEAKER_04

To reunite with uh what's your your best your bestie?

SPEAKER_03

I don't know how much into detail I can go into this, but I'm gonna tell you anyways. So like it started with let's see, I started playing Showcase a couple a little bit in eighth grade, and then Toby, let's see, I played with Ricky Martinez my freshman year, and that's when I started like playing.

SPEAKER_04

Shout out the OG of Knockouts right there. Oh yeah. Yeah, I was shocked I know about knockouts, aren't you?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

People don't realize this, but my brother graduated at 07, his girlfriend at the time in high school, she was on the knockouts. She was on that state championship team, and she was the catcher. Uh uh shout out Kristen Trocdon. She's probably uh it might not be good, I don't know, but we'll see how that goes.

SPEAKER_03

Um I started getting that like atmosphere of being in front of college coaches my freshman year, and then I started playing with Toby. And there was a school that had been following me since like my freshman year, and I kind of wanted that to be the place I wanted to go, and that was a little nor line, I'll tell you about where it was. And um Did they ever offer? Yeah, they did.

SPEAKER_04

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

But um, like after getting the offer and like just being on campus and like being around the girls and the coaches, I realized like that wasn't what I messed with, and I didn't like it. And I never really would have thought that I was gonna go to Catawba until I like was in that atmosphere. Like I saw Coach.

SPEAKER_04

It's a nice campus too.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I was on actually on campus today, but I saw Coach Larley. I went to a game, like she's awesome, the girls are amazing, like it really feels like home there. And that's how I knew. And she'd been watching she came to a bunch of my games, followed me, and I just knew like she's one of those people where it's like I want you on my team. It's not one of those people where it's like it's an honor for you to play for me. It's an it's an honor for you to play for on this level. Like, she wanted me on her team and she made that known. And I know some of the girls on the team, which makes me more comfortable. Yeah, she's a she's a great coach. I love, I'm looking, really looking forward to playing.

SPEAKER_04

I think I met her at that video. I think she was at that tournament I went to.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, she was. I think she was on the field when you were actually recording.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I think I talked to her for a few minutes actually, um, because I told them I like so I'm trying to take my middle schoolers to hopefully Katawba for the middle school camp this summer. So I think this is one of the coolest things. Uh and then one of the only colleges in this area that offers a middle school camp where you can play games every day. Yeah. Um, but I'm I don't know if you're gonna get emotional on this next question. Um, but what does Cami mean to you? I mean, you know she's a senior, this is your last year playing with her ever softball.

SPEAKER_03

I'm actually really upset because when I when I do see her again, we're gonna be playing each other. But she really means a lot to me. Like coming in my freshman year, she like really took me under her wing. We got along very well, and then like we just became like best friends on the field.

SPEAKER_04

Like you didn't recruit her for basketball?

SPEAKER_03

No, we tried that this summer, but that didn't work. But we had this thing when we get an out, we like do we'll like look at each other, and if there's one, then we'll like blow a kiss. If there's two, we'll blow another kiss. But we just mesh together and we we make jokes. We don't ever get butthurt about anything, so I'm really gonna miss her.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

And my question for you, uh, Miss Senior, um, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2024, and hopefully 2026. Um when you when when you get handed that diploma and it's all over, what emotions do you think you're gonna have and you look back on and what you've created here at Southwest Randolph?

SPEAKER_02

I get really emotional right now, actually. Like I think about it all the time. I don't I'm gonna cry. I know I'm gonna cry. When Toby takes me off the field, I'm gonna baw my eyes out. I think that I don't know how this year will end. And I'm hoping that we don't end up like we did last year because I won't be able to keep it together, knowing like crap, like this is my last, this is my last inning here. So I'm gonna be very emotional. I'm gonna be really sad.

SPEAKER_04

And I'm gonna play off of that. I what when that when you get taken taken off that field and you look at Coach Toby in the face, what do you think you're gonna say?

SPEAKER_02

Thank you. I think that's like one of my big things. Like, he's done so much for me. He's like my family and everything. He's like family to me. Like, he's like another dad. If I had any other problem, I could go to him and he'd answer. I think another big thing that's gonna be hard is looking out, and Nautica knows about this. It there's a group of pawpaws that sit there, and they're not really pawpaws on our team. We all call them pawpaws.

SPEAKER_04

That's awesome.

SPEAKER_02

One is Donald Stroder, he will sit there when you're up to bat. You swing it a ball, swing it a strike. Okay, and he'll tell you. And after the game, if you're not hitting it, he's like, hey, swing it a strike, you'll hit the ball. And I love him back there. He'll be like, move. Like if you're moving slow, he'll tell you. And I think like they get there at like 11 o'clock in the morning, put their chairs out, put their chairs out. Like that's where they sit. Everyone knows it, too. Like everybody knows it.

SPEAKER_04

They go leave their chairs there and then they come back later.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, don't sit in their seat. And I think last year, I like had this thing where I like lost my jersey. It was as soon as they got there, they come up to me and was like, that's not your jersey. I was like, I know, I know. They know my number. It's like it's such a family atmosphere. And I think all of Randolph County is such a family. When we were going to the state championship, there was it was posted on are those things called billboards?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It was like that we were going, it was it was crazy.

SPEAKER_03

It was unreal. And our fans like overtook the the who would it play? Maiden? Yes. There was unreal. I couldn't look because I was so nervous, but like whenever they called Southwest and Randolph, like all of our fans stood up and they like it just roared. Like it was insane.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, it was it was crazy insane. It made me very I'm very emotional. Nautica knows I'm very emotional. And I think that's what I'll miss so much is how much of a family atmosphere and Randolph County is.

SPEAKER_04

My last question, and before we sign off here, um, I want you to look at Nautica. When it's your last game ever with Nautica Parrish, the one you took under your wing, what is that emotion gonna be like?

SPEAKER_02

It's gonna be sad. I can't think about it right now. I'm gonna cry. I think about this all the time. I'm like, I'm gonna ball crying. It's gonna be my last game with her. My next time I'll play on a softball field with her, we'll be playing against each other. She'll be trying to get me out, but won't. Yeah. I might have to. I'll get you out.

SPEAKER_04

Don't hit a third base.

SPEAKER_02

I know her weaknesses.

SPEAKER_04

You know her weaknesses, uh-oh.

SPEAKER_02

Oh no. Oh, she's gonna tell her about hey, yeah. Play up. She soft slips. Oh if another team's listening to this, she doesn't.

SPEAKER_03

So I hope she doesn't. I actually have new skills. Uh new skills unlocked.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, y'all hear that, random and everybody else? Yeah, you heard that. Yeah, random. Play up. She'll shove it down.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's gonna be sad. Very sad. I'm gonna cry. I'm gonna cry a lot. I'm gonna ball.

SPEAKER_04

I feel like I need to come to that game. I just need to see. I I want to see the emotions. I gotta film it. I gotta capture it. Senior night. I think I'm gonna have to come to senior night. I think I think I gotta mark it down. I think I'll be at other games, but I think senior night's one I'm gonna have to come to and do a recap of for sports in the borough.

SPEAKER_02

I know. I told Toby, I was like, we can't, we can't do senior night before the game. Like, I need to be called out after the game because I'm not I'm gonna cry before the game. And he mentioned something at Oak Grove about how like seniors, he could tell we're nervous. It was our first, our first last high school game. And it was my first last game with him besides playing summer ball.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And I just had to look away from the group because I was like, my eyes were watering. I was like, this is this is gonna be hard.

SPEAKER_04

Well, anything you want to thank anybody else before we sign off here? And I want to thank you both for coming here on the Borough Buzz. And we gotta give a shout-out again to the our key sponsor, just keep swinging. They've been with me for two years now, so they are awesome. We're going on two years, and uh, if you need swag, hit them up, they got the best there is, and they got good softball gear out here, too.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah, they do definitely.

SPEAKER_02

Curtis is amazing, yeah. He is awesome, he keeps everything very organized. Yeah, he's never been like, well, this year he'll be my coach, but he's never been straight up my coach. Yeah, but he's always been like a coach to me. Sweetest guy ever. Yeah, helps so much.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, awesome. Well, thank you both for being on here. You want your parents, anybody guardians want to give a shout-out to before we sign off?

SPEAKER_03

Yes, my family. Yeah. Yeah. And Toby, of course. Yeah, my family.

SPEAKER_04

I'm gonna feel like I need to get y'all uh coach Toby's shirts. We gotta come up with a funny slogan we can give him. Like maybe senior night y'all can come up with and we'll get the shirt made.

SPEAKER_03

We need like a picture of his face. We did get tattoos with his face last year.

SPEAKER_04

Maybe we can get like him doing that cartwheel freeze frame it and on the cartwheel, and we'll put it on a shirt and give it to him.

SPEAKER_03

Oh my goodness. He would die.

SPEAKER_04

Well, thank y'all for tuning in and uh make sure you like, subscribe. I know they're both gonna share this episode. Yeah. And uh we'll see you next time on the Burrow Buzz.
