Speaker 1

I'm really excited to talk about fourth wing today . I'm so intrigued to hear your thoughts . We it's funny because we both actually finished this book probably about like two or three weeks before we're recording right now , and so I don't know about you , but I have been like man I have thoughts on discuss oh yeah it's kind of fun . We've got to like sit on it , but there's been anticipation for us at least to talk about it exactly we try not to talk about the books before we record , so that way you get all the fresh ideas

Speaker 1

and discussion . Speaking of discussion

Fourth Wing Book Description

Speaker 1

, so , fourth wing , the book , description of it . The back of it it is Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders . Twenty-year-old Violet Sorengale was supposed to enter the scribe quadrant , living a quiet life among books and history . Now the commanding general , also known as her toughest talons mother , has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre dragon riders .

Speaker 1

But when you're smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle , death is only a heartbeat away . Because dragons don't bond to fragile humans , they incinerate them . With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets , most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success . The rest would kill her just for being her mother's daughter . Like Zayden Ryerson , the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the rider's quadrant , she'll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise . Yet with every day that passes , the war outside grows more deadly . The kingdom's protective wards are falling , failing , and the death toll continues to rise . Even worse , violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret . Friends , enemies , lovers everyone at baskiath war college has an agenda , because once you enter , there are only two ways out Graduate or die Dun dun , dun . Yeah . So basically that's the book , or at least the description of it . We're going to go a little more in-depth about kind of what happens , but we're going to be talking about our thoughts on the book , answering some book club-esque questions and giving our final ratings .

Speaker 2

Yeah , and we got off a little off schedule because of you know life .

Speaker 1

Life happens , but we make our own schedule , baby .

Speaker 2

We do so . This month May we only had the one episode . June also going to be a one episode month with our book club for the fourth wing that we're listening to right now . But then back in July we're going to be picking it back up . It's going to go back to the two . We're going to announce our book club book for July in our first episode and so stay tuned for that , and so we're sorry that we kind of got off here , but you know we're going to get back better than ever . Yeah .

Speaker 1

So thanks for listening . We'll have another one next time

Spoiler Warning!

Speaker 1

Reading Recap

Speaker 1

so we're going to try and summarize or do little spark notes of the book . There's a lot in here , so we're going to try and summarize or do little spark notes of the book .

Speaker 2

There's a lot in here , yeah .

Speaker 1

So we're going to leave some stuff out .

Speaker 2

She's a big boy .

Speaker 1

Yeah , we're going to not include everything , but we're going to try and get to the main points . For those of you who haven't read , don't care to read it , but just want to hear lovely voices so you kind of have an idea of what we're talking about . Yeah , so just getting into it , it kind of starts off with . Well , it does start off with Violet . She's the youngest of three and she has now just turned the age where she's old enough to go to Pazgai .

Speaker 2

Is that how you ?

Speaker 1

say it Pazgai . Yeah , I think so War college .

Speaker 2

Fantasy words .

Speaker 1

Yeah , violet originally wanted to be a scribe like her dad , but her mom , who's the general forces her to attempt to become a dragon rider because everyone besides her father , I guess goes there .

Speaker 2

It's really important to her for some reason that still kind of isn't described , but it's just really , really important .

Speaker 1

Yeah , but everyone is really worried for her because she is super fragile and has a lot of health issues and the Rider's Quadrant is a lot of physical tests that could literally get her killed , like literally just to enter she has to cross like this super . Basically a balance beam of death . Yeah , I know .

Speaker 2

Like people are like trying to push her off , but like if you make it across , then like trying to push her off and uh so , but like if you make it across , then like you make it , then you're , you can officially join like the rider's quadrant .

Speaker 1

so just , just to start off , it's not on a good foot , yeah , but she makes it past that first test , which it's called like the parapet um , and she , when she makes it across , well , also , while she's going across , she kind of makes an enemy for just like being alive .

Speaker 2

the guy behind her , for some reason , is like I'm gonna kill you so literally no reason other than she's just there , not even like for her mother or anything like he doesn't even know her yet and it's just like targets her .

Speaker 1

So I mean we'll get into that more . But so he tries to kill her . She makes it across . As soon as she makes it across she finds her childhood like best friend , dane um , who of course she's had a big crush on um for forever , and he takes her into his squad to help protect her he's been like super protective of her her whole life because she's been super fragile .

Speaker 2

So now that she's joined the writer's quadrant he's trying to do like everything in his power to get her out of the writer's quadrant . He wants her in the scribe quadrant , where she was supposed to be , so he's going to protect her and try to get her there as best as he can . All the while Zayden and all of these children of rebellion leaders that from this rebellion that happened whatever years ago , are marked with these like tattoos or like I think they call them relics , I think something like that . Um , and are forced to go through the trials for the writer's quadrant too . But the kicker with that is they all hate violet's mom because violet's mom is the one that executed their parents after the rebellion , because they lost the rebellion . So now not only are they forced to go and try to basically become a dragon rider or die , but then they also are orphans because of violet's mom and now that violet's there , that she's target number one , enemy number one and then also zayden , who's like the big bad wolf , you know , the head honcho on campus .

Speaker 1

He also ends up being her wing leader , which is like not like her boss , but like , yeah , like her leader .

Speaker 2

There's four wings which are like groups or squads and they kind of like break down even further like military , but he's basically in charge .

Speaker 1

It's like the general within the school in a way yeah , um , and so , like we mentioned dane's overbearing , he's really , really trying to get her into the squad , scribe quadrant , um , like , even though she's violet's like making it through tests .

Speaker 2

she's kind of getting frustrated with him a little bit Because she's proving to herself that like , hey , she's kind of making it further than some of these other people are . She's not dying and he's like doing everything he can to get her out and she's like but what , if I can do this , why don't you believe in me ?

Speaker 1

She's going through her own little self-discovery and then also through certain tests that she's passing , she accidentally finds out that Zayden and the other rebellion kids are meeting up in secret , which is against the law . But she keeps it a secret because it just seems that he's helping the younger ones survive and not planning another rebellion .

Speaker 2

Because I think they can't meet up in anything larger than three . Yeah .

Speaker 1

But so Violet , with the help of her friends that she makes , she trains really hard with her team . She makes it to the selection for dragons and then , during kind of the Hunger Games-esque style selection , the dragons and eligible riders . Well , first the riders like walk through and the dragons literally just like . It's kind of like both , Like both riders and dragons kind of just measure each other up , just look at each other , and then after that they go into a Hunger Games style center arena type thing where they get to find their match . But the catch with that is there's kind of no rules . So if a rider wants to kill you , they can kill you and not get in trouble for it .

Speaker 2

although that's pretty , you can kind of kill each other anytime , but in your sleep is when you can kill someone at the college and the only rule really with it is that anybody on the outside that's not trying for a dragon there already is like connected to a dragon , cannot interfere at all and so during this violet's arch nemesis jack , the one who tried to kill her from the very get-go , tries to kill her again .

Speaker 1

Well , tries to kill off a smaller dragon , with the mindset of taking out the weakest link for the good of the wing . Um , but violet steps in to save that dragon and ends up fighting off jack and some of the friends that he's brought .

Speaker 2

But before she does that , um , of course they're kind of like going through this whole like back and forth battle . She gets in a few good shots , but it's three against one , so her odds are not good at this point and then the like biggest badass dragon comes and steps in to save both her and the small dragon and basically , like , kills the people that were there trying to kill her , other than Jack . Jack escapes .

Speaker 1

He runs away like a little boy , yeah , and right before the big dragon comes to save her . You do see that Zayden has been watching and he takes one step towards her .

Speaker 2

Like he's going to break the rules .

Speaker 1

Yes , and then what you find out one of the big kickers is that that big dragon whose name is Taryn that's how I say it and then Andarna , do you say it that way too . So Taryn and the small dragon who she was protecting , they both bond with Violet , and that makes her the first person ever to bond with two dragons ever to bond with two dragons .

Speaker 2

And when you bond with a dragon it's like all of a sudden your minds are kind of melded . You get to hear their thoughts in your head . They kind of like it's like your souls are intertwined .

Speaker 1

If one of you dies , the other one , essentially , is going to die .

Speaker 2

You can't live without each other . You like siphon magic from the dragon too , because they like kind of feed into that for you to help protect you and whatnot . Yeah , um .

Speaker 1

Another big thing is that taran also happens to be mates with zayden's dragon . Um , so that kind of means that zayden and violet are bound together for life because mated dragons have to stay together which kind of goes against the whole zayden trying to kill violet thing for her mom .

Speaker 2

They're enemies .

Speaker 1

Um , and then it's . It's kind of a risk that if either of the two people die , or the dragons die , so does the other , because of the bond with the dragon .

Speaker 2

So they're kind of all four bonded at this point . Yeah , whether they want to be or not .

Speaker 1

Yeah , whole big thing . We find out Sweet and Darna is a baby dragon , and so that's why she's so small . And so Violet and Zayden have agreed they're going to protect her secret and all other baby dragons in the future , especially because there's few and far between .

Speaker 2

Nobody's ever seen a baby dragon . That's why nobody realizes that Andarna is a baby dragon , and the dragons want to keep it that way .

Speaker 1

Yeah , little cutie . And then there's some more kind of like trials . At the end of the school year they have a war games type thing where every wing competes against each other in a war scrimmage to prove themselves . During one of these scrimmages , violet signet from taran , which is her special magical power that manifests from the magic her dragon gives her , reveals itself finally .

Speaker 2

It took like a little while she was like one of the last ones in her class to finally have one . Yeah , because , like the dragons , will siphon magic to the person so they can do like basic little magic things . But then the signet is what manifests from the person and it's supposed to be based on , based on the person's values , who they are inside . It's based on the person , not the dragon that then takes the dragon's magic and manifests into this special power that they have called the signet .

Speaker 1

Hers manifests during this trial and she finds out that she's a lightning wielder , which is a power that has not been seen in centuries , so it is super rare . And she ends out that she's a lightning wielder , which is a power that has not been seen in centuries , so it is super rare . And she ends up killing Jack so long sucker to save her friend , using this power , and becomes super depressed because she never wanted to kill anyone , Because why would you want to kill someone ?

Speaker 2

And then later some people come in and try to kill her because they want to take her dragon , because they didn't end up being bonded with a dragon , but then Zayden steps in the saver , obviously because they now have this life bond that they have to live with , which then causes lots of big sexual tension and energy between them all . And then eventually things happen .

Speaker 1

The tension snaps and they give in um . So yeah , zayden and her , they , they do the deed , they do the deed and they finally kind of they're not not enemies , but they're also they're like not in a relationship , but they're like friends kind of .

Speaker 1

Connected , yeah . And so the final war game trial . Violet is in a group with Zayden and all the other Rebellion kids , which she doesn't notice at first , but that's just the group that she's in , and she quickly finds out that they've been aiding the enemy in the Continent War that's been raging on , kind of in the background of this book , between the north , which are the dragon riders , and the south , which are griffin riders , which I think those are like birds , more like a hawk style right it's like um , it's a mythical creature with like a eagle on , like a lion's body kind of thing , like eagle , head wings , lion's body kind of thing um .

Speaker 1

So then it turns out that she finds out , um , as they , as she meets the south , um , that the south is not the enemy , but the venin , venin , vanin , that are coming from the south . Um , and our creatures from fairy tales are real . That is the real enemy . So the vanon are these creatures . She had a book that her dad like used to read to her .

Speaker 1

Um , there's like fairy tale book yeah , just like bedtime story . And she loved this book and in it were all these so called mythical creatures . Um , she ended up not being able to find the book when she was looking for it in , like the public library that had all of the books ever that you should ever be able to find . So that's kind of a red flag like foreshadowing , but it's real from the fairy tales . So that's a big thing .

Speaker 1

And then Zayden and other rebellion kids have been giving weapons to the South to help fight them like their parents did , which is what started this whole rebellion . And then a big kind of shocker is you find out that Dane has been secretly reading Violet's memories the whole time through his signet and knows everything about Zayden and Andarna and has told his dad who's in charge of the war games . Zayden and Andarna , and is told his dad who's in charge of the war games . So the mission that they were originally sent on for the last trial of war games was meant to test their loyalty to the north or kill them if they tried to help the south . And obviously they're all rebell rebellions , um , and so they stay to help the south , fend off the venin and their worben um , a few of the kids died .

Speaker 1

Very sad it was it heartbreak yes liam dies , but they did ultimately save the town and learned valuable information about killing them . Um , violet ends up getting poisoned from one of them and gets she gets a cut from a poison dagger and she is dying . And they don't , like they're too far removed , like they can't take her back , so zayden takes her to his old home that has secretly become the hub of those who know the truth about the venin , so the most powerful healer in the land can save her , and this healer ends up being her brother who they all thought was dead and was killed by , I think , zayden's father in the war .

Speaker 1

But he's actually part of the rebellion itself and with a big breath I say the end that's literally how the book ends so I know we missed some information and that was a little bit of word vomit , but for those who haven't read the book in a while , we kind of wanted to give a recap . That's our reading recap .

Speaker 2

There's so much more that goes on , so much more detail and nuance to a lot of these different like relationships or things that happen .

Speaker 1

But we didn't even touch on Violet's sister , but she's got a sister she's in the book great warrior , let's get into

Initial Thoughts on the Book

Speaker 1

it , darby .

Speaker 2

What are your thoughts ?

Speaker 1

initial thoughts my initial thoughts . So I was surprised by how much I liked the book , because I was really like , like I don't know , I had weird vibes going in , like I just thought it was going to be overhyped , but it really kept me like captured the whole time . Um , I loved zayden's like villain portrayal . I think it's hard to create like a , a hot villain who isn't like cringy , but I think they did a good job with it and just like the dialect between him and violet and like their relationship . I I really enjoyed it . I've also never really read any sort of dragon fantasy book or books involving dragons like as like the main thing , so that was a good switch up for me . I really I liked it .

Speaker 2

Nice , I love dragons . Yeah , I have different thoughts . Not surprising I have a lot of mixed thoughts on the book . I kind of go back and forth . I definitely was entertained by it , but I don't think it lived up to the hype for me . For me , this book was kind of like one of those FX movies that when you're scrolling through channels and you come across it and you just kind of start watching , even though you're not super enthralled by it , it's still entertaining and're enjoying , like while you're like in the moment of it . That was this book for me . Okay . So there's a lot of parts that I did enjoy about it , but then there's a lot of things that if I start thinking too hard about it , that just start popping all the bubbles of the fantasy for me the more that we get into it .

Speaker 2

So it's kind of like the back and forth of it all . Yeah , um , I definitely think that it the author kind of frankensteined the idea of it from a bunch of different books . So , like , instead of taking inspiration , I felt very like I'm taking this from this book . I'm taking this from this book . I'm taking this from this book to make like this Frankenstein , like this is what's gonna be popular with readers kind of book .

Speaker 1

I can see that , but for me , I think she like took inspiration from like the best parts of fantasy books , so the things that you really enjoy reading , because a lot of fantasy books are you got the female main character super weak but yet super powerful , like the broody guy that's who's a villain , right , like so in a sense , a lot of things are the same , but I think she took like your favorite parts of different things .

Speaker 2

She definitely took the good parts of it for sure . Yeah , um , yeah , I don't know , it was just kind of it was a mixed , mixed feelings okay , we'll get into it more .

Speaker 1

Yeah ,

Favorite Part

Speaker 1

well , what would you say was your favorite part of the ?

Speaker 2

book the dragons . I love dragons . They were cool . It was really cool . I thought it was well done . I enjoyed being able to like hear their thoughts through Violet's mind . Yeah , that was neat . Their own opinions , their own thoughts , not just like kind of guessing or like based off of their like way that they're like moving or hold their head , kind of thing .

Speaker 1

Like you're actually hearing what's going on . That was nice .

Speaker 2

I enjoyed that part a lot and like how I found it fascinating , like the quote , unquote dragon culture of it and how , even though humans kind of know that the dragons aren't charged , even though humans kind of know that the dragons aren't charged , I think it gets forgotten a lot in the grand scheme of things , because humans become self-absorbed with themselves in their own society that they forget that like no , the dragons are really running everything and making all the decisions for everything too . So it was kind of fun to like know that and pick up on that and where it gets kind of like maybe not lost , makes you think a little bit more about it .

Speaker 1

It's true , it's like , um , like in a zoo , like yeah , you have the elephants behind a cage , but if you go in there and they don't want to be fed , that , or they're letting you , let them in right , like they're the ones who can take you out exactly , exactly .

Speaker 2

So I really enjoyed that part . I also think I really enjoyed like the action sequences in this book . I thought that they were well done . They kept me like engaged the whole time throughout it , even though a lot of it for me was kind of predictable , like the outcome , the way it was written , even though it was predictable still kept me like intrigued while I was reading , to like continue reading . Yeah , so I enjoyed that part as well . What about you ?

Speaker 1

um , I think it maybe when the dragons pick her , like when she bonds with them and they find out that she has two , like that was just like I remember reading that and at the , I think it's like right at the end , where you find out it's both , and I'm like like I remember gasping being like dude , they're going to freak out , and so that was really fun and I liked the whole chaos that ensued , you know , and it was a reminder that the dragons are in charge Exactly .

Speaker 1

So it was just like a fun moment , because it's like okay , now I want to hear from everyone's perspective of , like , what does Dane think of it ? What does Zayden think of it ? Like , at the time it's like are the dragons like friends ? Do they not know each other ? Are they fighting for her ? Like you know , there's so many . So it was fun . I was like what is going to happen ?

Speaker 2

I would love to know what was going on in her mom's brain throughout this whole book , but really especially during this part with the two dragons . I would give anything a penny for her thoughts .

Speaker 1

I also really liked like the fight scenes which Frank kind of gave , like Divergent , when they're fighting in the little like squares , like that's kind of what I was picturing . Like when they're like . I never read Divergent I didn't either , but I'm talking about the movie .

Speaker 2

Oh , I didn't watch the movie either . Oh , the movies were good .

Speaker 1

Well , also don't hate on me for watching the movie and not reading the book , but anyway , we're watching the movie , not reading the book , but anyway , um , I've been sold but it so I was just picturing , like that , where they're like fighting , and so I liked those fighting sequences , especially the one where zayden is basically like taunting her and takes away all of her daggers like that's just one that like it makes me like giddy .

Speaker 1

I'm like , oh my gosh , like you're so dumb . Yeah , you thought you could take it like I don't know . It was just , I liked that one yeah , that was good

Least Favorite Part

Speaker 1

.

Speaker 2

Did you have a least favorite part ?

Speaker 1

I did and it's kind of a character dane to me . It was just a bit yeah , it was just too overbearing to the point that I couldn't root for him because it's like , if you're supposedly her best friend you guys have been childhood friends Like wouldn't you trust her and like , yeah , sure , like stick to the rules . But like everyone has a breaking point , like it was almost unrealistic how overbearing he was and I get it's fantasy , everything's unrealistic . But just from a personality perspective of friends , like okay , we get it .

Speaker 1

And like it's not like she was , was like maybe I should be a scribe , like she was telling him , like I think I can do it , like so he just annoyed me . His character and what stinks is like he had potential to , especially like in the beginning it wasn't that bad . I'm like okay , yeah , I can grasp the whole possible love triangle thing , but then she so quickly turns it around of like okay , no , he's gonna annoy you and maybe that was her intention .

Speaker 1

Like maybe she wanted you to really just like Zayden , but it was by the end of it . I was like , okay , your character just like sucks , but not even in , like you're not adding as much to the story , like I don't know , he just I didn't love him no , I agree , he was a hundred percent one of my least favorite parts about this book too .

Speaker 2

Definitely one of the most annoying characters I've ever read like hands down . But he had potential to be a sexist . He did . I totally see it .

Speaker 1

I totally understand what you're saying there .

Speaker 2

I'm like gosh . He could have been . Yes , he could have been better . It's the depth of it . She didn't give him enough depth to make him more compelling .

Speaker 1

Yeah , he was just too flat , annoying , or even like I think it would have been better if , like sure , he mentioned ascribe a couple of times and he was a little overprotective , but not as much . And then at the ending , when you find out the betrayal , it would have hit harder . But the amount of times that he was like I follow the rules , we can't kiss , we can't do anything . And then it was like no , I've betrayed you .

Speaker 2

It's like obviously we saw that coming , like you're not slick like , yeah , I don't know he could have been . He could have been better . Yes , no , I 100 agree . Yeah , he most annoying thing . I'm not even gonna try to go . You covered it all um my . My other least favorite parts was the constant mention of like , how breakable and fragile violet is .

Speaker 2

Like , I get it , she's little , she's skinny , she's not why like right they like barely mention it in the beginning of the book how it's like she had the sickness , which is why her hair is silver , no matter what like I don't we need more .

Speaker 2

Yeah , there was the foundation , yep it makes no sense , but it was just , it's like I get it . You need to set her up that way , but the constantness of of it I'm like I get it , move on , I don't care anymore . Clearly she's not that fragile anymore either . She's doing what the condition is . You're just saying she's weak , like right , but she's not because she's got a big dragon right exactly . Yeah , oh , that was I get you , yeah so annoying .

Speaker 2

Um , I also did not appreciate after . Violet was like , uh , bonded to her dragon . Like all rules just fell off for her at that point , I feel like because she was still a first year and zayden was a fourth year , right ? Or a third , third , third year . Yeah , there's only three . She was still a first year , he was a third year and he's the wing leader , so like in a military setting , like he is like in charge kayla comes from a military family .

Speaker 2

I am maybe , maybe that's why this triggered me so much , because like there's supposed to be order and structure and I get it . Like it's it's a fictional book , I understand and like to have some sort of rebellion , I get it . But she was very blatantly just like throwing her attitude around , like I don't appreciate this and you shouldn't be doing this , you shouldn't be doing that to zayden , like leave me alone .

Speaker 1

Blah , blah , blah uh no , okay , I will say , though , don't you think you would go a little like power trippy , though , at the fact that she now knows ? Like okay , he can't kill me because he dies too ? Like right , you feel a little more ease to be able to like talk to him the way you want , because it's like , what are you gonna do ?

Speaker 2

like yes , but it's not even about killing her anymore . At that point it's like you're at a war college there is order and structure , the fact that you have zero consequences it's not even like dying . It's like there's zero consequences or backlash for you acting out . So what's keeping everybody else in line ? Like why is it that only you can get away because you're like you know , zayden's favorite kind of thing ? Like yeah , oh , oh , that bothered me so much .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I guess when , like , Liam was introduced as the bodyguard is kind of when it really like rules fell off . But I don't know , because I kind of get her . If someone was following me around , I'd be like , okay , I'm throwing temper tantrums now .

Speaker 2

Oh no , I totally get that , but I think it was group settings . Because it's like if you're talking to him one-on-one and telling him all this and like having that by all means set him in his place , like have the attitude , be sassy with him , but when they're in like military formation in the fronts , like getting ready to go and do like whatever war game things that are going on , and she's talking to him like that in front of the squad , no , you can't do that and get away with that , absolutely not . It bugged me real bad .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I can see where you're coming from . It definitely did not bug me like it bugged you , but I can see where you're coming from .

Speaker 2

Yeah , so that was that rubbed me the wrong way .

Speaker 1

But also by the end of it , like their squad is so close .

Speaker 2

Like you , like , they're talking about so many things already , but there's still a level of I guess that , like here's definitely your military background .

Speaker 2

It's the respect of it and that's the key that gets to me , because even like with like imogen um would like talk back , but there's still like a level of respect in the hierarchy of where they stand . Like you can still buddy buddy , you can still state your case . You can still buddy-buddy , you can still state your case . You can still like give perspective or try to like push back on things , but like what's said is said , what's done is done , and there's a level of respect for the order of it . And Violet got away with having none of that and that's the part that really just kind of irked me .

Speaker 1

I guess I don't know Small things that bother me , like lash out a little bit Right , that would at least made it better . But because it was only Violet , kind of being like comfortable yeah .

Speaker 2

After getting the dragon yeah , that . Ugh , ugh .

Speaker 1

All right , Lieutenant Michaela .

Speaker 2

Speaking of dragons . So , and Darna said that signets reflect , kind of like the rider , who the rider is like at their core . So what do you think like lightning ? How does that reflect violet , do you think ?

Speaker 1

um , I really didn't think about that much while reading it , but I don't know . I would assume just like stereotypical fantasy stuff , like she's the weak female character , so she has to be ridiculously powerful in other ways , um , but yeah , I think that is one of the only things that makes like I don't know , I didn't .

Speaker 2

I completely agree , but it's frustrating for me and my brain because I can make the connections

Dragons, Magic, and More

Speaker 2

for a lot of these other people that I know their signets of . So , like dane , being able to go back 15 , whatever seconds , 15 minutes , I don't remember , it's 15 , something , um , in somebody's memory like makes sense because he's like the rule follower and like he wants to know what's going on at all times . He wants the control of it all . So like at his core , that made sense to me . Zayden having like these ridiculous shadow powers , because he's hiding in the shadows , he's hiding this rebellion , he's protecting all these people in the shadow . So like that makes sense for him at his core . Where does lightning come in for violet ?

Speaker 1

I don't understand how that connected and I would really love the author's explanation on this well , but I think it's kind of like what you're saying , like she's so weak she's trying to be strong . It's like this is now her way of being able to be strong and powerful maybe and also it probably plays into like like zayden calls her violence , like she has no trouble like poisoning other people , like she has , like she does have , like , not like violence tendency , but like she's got a little oomph in her that you don't think about .

Speaker 2

I just feel like I don't know , maybe it's not needed , but like her in her core they keep talking about , like her brain , her knowledge , her like how she can think through things ways that nobody else can because she was trained to be a scribe . So I would have imagined , like a signet being something that like amplifies that for I don't know what it would be , but like something that's like related to that in some way , because I feel , like they .

Speaker 2

The author did such a good job of like portraying like that is her at her core and like what sets her apart , what makes her strong when she seems weak , is her mind . That's why um taryn , like bonded with her , is because of her mind , to then all of a sudden have lightning . I'm like I'm not saying that it's wrong , I just want an explanation why , like how did that connect ? Where did that come from ?

Speaker 1

I feel like her mind , though , helps her in more tactical settings , um like more using her brain and like the strategizing , but I think the whole point of her becoming a rider is like she's developing and growing in such a different way that she's never even thought she'd be able to do .

Speaker 2

That's true .

Speaker 1

That's a fair point so I think that kind of adds to like her having this now like she never thought she would even live to where she is , and now she's got this big power and now she can use it . Once she hones in on it , she can use her tactful mind to be like what's the who to take out first , like I guess that's how I rationalize it .

Speaker 2

No , that makes sense , that's true .

Speaker 1

That's a very good point yeah , what signet did you find most beneficial , and which one would you want ?

Speaker 2

there were a lot of really good ones thrown out there I had to look them up .

Speaker 1

It had been a little while since I read it so I had to , like look them up , but they were . They varied a lot , which was nice , because sometimes it's like like earth , air fire right like mine , read like it's like , you get four you know this had a lot they did .

Speaker 2

They had a lot of variation , a lot of new ones that were kind of thrown in there and I so there were a lot that I think that would be really beneficial . I don't know which one would be the most beneficial , but the one that I kind of enjoyed or like the idea of the most , was violet's sister how she's able to shield yeah um for a certain area , because surface level like okay , whatever it's protection .

Speaker 2

But in the book , when they talk about going through like the you know war scenario with her , when she's up there like teaching them um and like what if this happens , what would you do ? The way that they were able to use her shielding as like a tactical thing in the air as well and not just like a protecting the fortress , I thought was an interesting take on it and like adds kind of a different dynamic to it that I found intriguing . So I liked that one a lot yeah what about you ? Is that ?

Speaker 1

well , is that the one that you would want to have ?

Speaker 2

no , the one I would want to have was the mind reading . Okay , of course . Are you surprised , darby ? I think you couldn't guess . Um , although I will say it's the one that gets everybody killed . So , shocker , I want that one , but , um , but because it's like the most information you can get out of people . But I would want a way to turn it off like I wouldn't want it .

Speaker 2

If there's no way to turn it , almost like danes right kind of , but he only , but his is very limited versus like the one kid who , poor kid , who actually had like the mind reading and he reminds me of bruce almighty when he's getting all the prayers and like I don't think it's so much .

Speaker 1

Oh my gosh , it's so funny , so good . Love jim carrey . Watch it tonight after this everyone has to watch it . If you haven't watched it anyway , continue .

Speaker 2

It won't make sense to you now it's uh , I just I maybe there is a way to control . I'm sure that there is a way to control it . And for him it was just too overwhelming in that moment when he like was like got the signet power , but where you're like looking at everybody and all of a sudden you're having everybody's thoughts in your head . I'm sure it's like super overwhelming . So I would want a way to like learn how to control it so I'm not having to like listen constantly to everybody's thoughts .

Speaker 1

But that's the one I would want it would be cool if in one of the future books on the rebellion side we see someone who got that signet but no one knew . Yeah , and they know how to use it .

Speaker 2

That'd be cool foreshadow , maybe , maybe , rebecca call me um .

Speaker 1

I thought that the mending like healing signet would be the most powerful and beneficial , especially in war . Yeah , that's very true . Um , yeah , I just think like it makes sense .

Speaker 1

Yeah , yeah it's pretty less people die yeah I think the shadow one would be neat and you're trying to like sneak around , I guess . I don't know . It was hard for me to pick . There's a lot of them , but for some reason I was just being pulled to shadows . I think we should take a signet quiz and then post our results on the instagram at lazy girl library .

Speaker 1

Yes , so maybe we'll do that after . If you're listening to this , then that means it's we've done it , so it will will be on . Go check out our stories or archived stories on our profile so you can take the quiz and we can find out what you are and what your signet is , we'll find one .

Speaker 2

We'll post the link . Check it out . Yeah , because we'll be curious to see what everybody else is too .

Speaker 1

Yeah , but I am nervous to take it because like spoilers for future signets maybe .

Speaker 2

That's true . Spoilers for future Cygnus maybe .

Speaker 1

That's true , I don't know . Yeah , we'll figure it out .

Speaker 2

What do you think her second one will be ? Because now she has two right , so her Cygnus from Terran is lightning and Darna , because she's not a full dragon , she can give over power of freezing time . But they explain that that's not necessarily her . True , like that wouldn't be like the signet power that violet's getting , that's just like her fletchling , like powers that she's able to like give over in that time , so like it could change , it could not as she gets older and like is able to like wield another signet I feel like and I'm totally just hypothesizing I feel like the author originally had freezing time as the signet , but then went back and edited it to be maybe , maybe not , so that in the future , if she needs it to change or be something else , it could .

Speaker 2

I don't know Interesting take yeah . I think the time is cool and I think that it would be , but then the signet is based on the person , not the dragon , so I'll be curious to see , or if she even gets a second one .

Speaker 1

Maybe that's when her mind stuff comes in True , like brain stuff , photographic memory . I don't know , but that could be .

Speaker 2

Or just like I don't know , like the brain stuff , like the general , how he's able to see the outcome of like a war before it happens , or like a battle or something before it happens , or like a battle or something before it happens . I don't know , and there's so many possibilities for her I feel like with that it's cool do you think zayden was justified in keeping his secrets of aiding the enemy ?

Speaker 2

uh , yes , absolutely 100 this . This was another thing that kind of irked me a little bit her initial frustration of him not telling her . Totally understand , I get it . He lied you knew this is a big shocker , big surprise . You thought you he could trust you , like with his secrets kind of thing . I understand the initial frustration . However , when we got to the very end of the book , she's healed and she's still like no , I can't trust you . I thought that we were in love but then you held out this big secret from me like I don't know how I feel about you now , still so angry out him .

Speaker 1

I would have been like vanden vernon or real or whatever .

Speaker 2

That'd be my first thought I'm like are you kidding me ? No , that I just . It was so frustrating because it's like she's so narrow-sided on their love versus thinking about the bigger picture and how it literally has nothing to do with her . It has everything to do with him having to shoulder this burden of taking care of all about you , exactly .

Speaker 2

It's not all about you , violet think about the bigger picture , think about all the people that he's protecting . Just because he can trust you doesn't mean that everybody else can trust you , or that everybody else does trust you . So he's having to protect their secrets for them too . That's not his call to make on their behalf Just because you guys fell in love and decided to have , you know , some spicy times together , no , some electric lightning . Oh my gosh . It was so dramatic , though I just it was so frustrating .

Speaker 1

Yeah , no , I completely agree . His only perception of Violet in the beginning is that her mom killed his dad . There's no reason for him to trust her , Even if he , like , felt a certain way like there was no reason . Well , and .

Speaker 2

I feel like sorry , if you can hear . I have an ice cream truck going by .

Speaker 1

I really want to go down there . We have an ice cream truck that comes into our apartment , but it's like , instead of I really hope you guys can hear the sound , but it's um , it's not like a normal ice cream truck sound that ours does , it's like a trap ice cream truck like that . That's literally the only way I can explain it .

Speaker 2

So what's ironic is they came through earlier today too , so this is the first time they've ever come out really well and they're like all right yeah this is our best stop , um , but hopping back in it .

Speaker 1

Yeah , he had no reason to trust her and like , sure , maybe as it progressed he should have or could have told her , like , maybe after they finally like did the deed , like that's when you would think that you could be most comfortable with each other and vulnerable , and maybe you could tell her then right .

Speaker 2

But but also , too , it's like she's also thinking that , again , everything's all about violet , everything's centered around violet . What if it had nothing to do with how much you can trust her , but everything about what other people can get from her too , because that's also like , what about her mom being able to , like I don't know , take information from her dane ?

Speaker 2

clearly can read her mind , and Zayden could like see right through Dane , so that's probably a huge part of it too , so it literally could have had absolutely nothing to do with how much he trusts you and have everything to do with outside circumstances for that as well . Yeah , again , I get the initial . It's the longevity of it that just why , violet ?

Speaker 1

What about T longevity of it ? That just why violent . What about taryn ? Him keeping the secret too ?

Speaker 2

um , I feel like they didn't really put him in between a rock and a hard place on that one , because , on one hand , it's like the agenda for like dragons , like what you believe in , and like you want to help out that cause and like make sure that everything is staying like secret and safe because of outside factors that could potentially cause issues , but at the same time , you're bonded to this person , you have this , you're sharing the same mind to , so that try to like keep something from her that big , that like can affect her too . I feel like I don't know which way . I feel like I understood him .

Speaker 1

If either way he went , yeah , there really was no right way for him well , I think taryn , like he has his own soul and he can make his own decisions , but I think , like I respect him for really supporting his mate , like he's supporting his mates flyer , yeah , um . So it's like almost not even for zayden , but for his mate , um , but it would have been interesting if he had spilled the beans .

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 1

That would have been an interesting dynamic . Would she have kept it in and kind of observed him ? Probably not . No , because that doesn't seem like her character . Or would she have blown up on him ? Would she have gone to Dane and told him ? It would have been just interesting . But I'm not mad that they kept it from her . But if they hadn't , it just would have been a different story . Yeah .

Speaker 2

Side note that I started thinking about while we're talking about this , with Zayden and Violet and their love story , I feel like she got attached so quickly . There was the sexual tension , there was the release of the sexual tension and all of a sudden it's like I'm absolutely in love with this person and I need to spend every waking moment , moment , rest of my life with this person and get super upset that they're not at the same place that she is , because it was like a flip of a switch for her . Yeah , like that just happened real quick for you and that doesn't happen for everybody else .

Speaker 1

I feel like it was like like instant love . Yeah , I think they did .

Speaker 2

The author did a really good job with like the build-up , but after the release then it was kind of like yeah , instant love . All of a sudden You're like wait a second .

Speaker 1

Yeah , which could have been better if Dane wasn't so annoying . She could have not been in so much love because there could have been some more thinking behind it . Dane , yeah , I also . I don't know when is the best part to say this , but it just popped in my mind . I don't know when is the best part to say this , but it just popped in my mind when the dragons were like getting it on and she was like in that lust haze . It reminded me of Tamlin during the True , that's all I could think of . Calamite , yeah , yeah , during Calamite , all I could think of was like this is what that feels like right now .

Speaker 1

That's so true , it was I mean it was good . It so , Drew , it was . I mean it was good .

Speaker 2

It was funny , that is funny . Oh , poor Zayden in that moment . How do you handle that ? He handled that like a champ , though I will say he did .

Speaker 1

But it was perfect , though , like if they had done it like , that wouldn't have been as like good . Yeah so like it , just it added to the tension .

Speaker 2

It did it was dragons , though , so every year we learn less . Dragons are bonding . So do you think that , like the nevarians , politics are at play ? Do you think that they just follow , like the allegiances of whoever their writer is , or do you think the writers will feel the support for their cause that like ? So the dragons like choose who they think would like help them in that way ?

Speaker 1

this is a good question . I think they choose writers based on their feelings about the other person and how their values align , because that's kind of what andarna and taryn basically say , like they just saw it in her um , so at least in violet's case .

Speaker 1

But I am sure that it varies , um , just like humans varies , I'm sure dragons vary on their reasonings for choosing . Like . I don't think all dragons are alike , because if they were , then jackson or whatever would have never gotten picked by anybody . You know like , yeah , but he did have a dragon , so what did that dragon see in him ? You know , so I think it varies . But they prioritize the good , powerful ones . Yeah . What's inside a person ?

Speaker 2

yeah I think , yeah , there's a .

Speaker 2

I think there's a lot that humans don't know and may never know about the inner workings of dragons , and we kind of touched on this already , so I'm not gonna go too in depth .

Speaker 2

But it mentions like multiple times that even though it feels like the writers are in control of the dragons , that it's like not even close to the case , like obviously , like they wanted to control whether violet can have two dragons or not , but ultimately the dragons are the ones that are making that decision and they just have to deal with whatever that decision is , and I think that that gets forgotten a lot , um , and so I'm sure that , yeah , like you said , they probably align with whoever like aligns with what their reasons for deciding to bond are .

Speaker 2

So if , like for jack's um dragon was probably bonded to him because they he was looking for somebody that's like super strong and ruthless , and so obviously that's jack versus like taran was looking for somebody that's like super strong and ruthless , and so obviously that's Jack versus like Taryn was looking for , or not even looking , but just appreciated like Violet's efforts to save Indarna , and so therefore , like was able to bond with her in that way , and I'm sure Zayden's dragon bonded with him because , like , she felt for their cause and wanted help , and so , therefore , that that's how they could bond , yeah , so I'm sure , yeah , there's a lot of probably different ways that , yeah , they all have their different agendas .

Speaker 1

yeah I am curious how much more the dragons know than the humans and what the dragons want to happen like . Like do the dragons know both sides , like the north and the south ? Like can the dragons talk to worven ? Like do the dragons know where there are other mythical creatures that are alive ? Like , right , I'm sure they know much more than the humans . And like , what do they choose to share ? What do they don't ?

Speaker 2

right . Well , it's kind of this gets into like our next question . So the quote is dragons , don't make mistakes . What do you think General Melgrin's dragon gifted this ? Why do you think General Melgrin's dragon gifted the Separatist children a relic that would block his own rider from seeing them ? I feel like this gets into what you were about to say , which is why I wanted to throw that in there .

Speaker 1

Well , I mean , in essence , I just think the dragon must support the Separatist cause , Like it's kind of the only explanation that makes sense to me but it go to your point that you were making it kind of .

Speaker 2

It makes you think , like , how much do the dragons see and know ? How do they want to impact the war ? Yeah , and how are they like manipulating things on their side that the humans aren't even aware of ? Yeah , yeah , no , I definitely agree . I think it's . Yeah , it's fascinating how , like the dragons choose to bond , or like how this dragon specifically chose the bond with the general but then undermines him in such a big way . So it makes you think , like was it all part of the plan originally so he can like be in his mind and know what's going on , like from the general , like perspective of everything that's going on in the north to help figure out the south , and like undermine where needed or help where needed . Or was the general initially on the cause and that's why they bonded , but then things changed . But then , once you're bonded , you can't really unbond without causing massive destruction to the dragon , so then he's like helping out on different ways . I don't know , but definitely gets into your point it's interesting .

Speaker 1

It is interesting too , and it's , I find it interesting that a rider can die , but the dragon won't . I wonder if a dragon wanted their human to live without them if they could , like , siphon off the rest of their powers to them to let them live or something like like it . Just to me it's kind of like like a loose end of like okay , why can the dragon live , but then the human can't ?

Speaker 2

like what I don't know I'm sure it has something to do with the magic , but that's a really valid point is like if the dragon gave up all its magic to the human to live and the dragon dies . Would that work ?

Speaker 1

yeah , curious and curious I know

Most Surprising Part

Speaker 1

you are often able to think of endings . I am not not , but what of the like , reveals or plot points did you see coming , and were there any that you were surprised by ?

Speaker 2

There was one , I was . This is a pretty predictable book for me . I've said that before . I was able to see a lot of it coming , like the brother being alive , zayden helping out the cause , the Venom being real was made pretty obvious that . But the one thing and it's kind of I have to explain it a little bit because it was for me the one thing that got me was dane reading , uh , violet's memories . But not that he did , because I , like you , saw that coming when they left for the initial war game , when they were going down , and then everything went down at the very end of the book with like the reveal right and that's how they ended up in that position or you can kind of see it when , like he wants to read her mind with that girl and she's like no right , exactly .

Speaker 2

So you kind of like you knew with that happening , you knew it was going to come and that's how they got set up with the either , you know , leave the south or and show your allegiance to the north , or help the north and or help the south and die , kind of thing . Um , that's how they got put in that position is because dane read by his memory , so that part wasn't surprising me . But the shocking part that kind of , was the realization that hit that the author makes you think is how many times throughout the story did the author intentionally mention dane touching her face ? Yeah , and how many times he was actually reading her memories and how much does he really know about so much more ? That was the realization of a oh , wait , a second , because then you're going back in your brain . You're like wait , but then . But then what about this ? And like how , about how many times ? And like that was the big one that got me for this book .

Speaker 1

that's true , that that's true . I feel similarly . I was not surprised at her brother living at all . Yeah , that was like one of my least favorite parts about the book is I feel like the ending was so hyped about like you're not going to see it coming . It was like no , I totally saw it coming .

Speaker 2

And then it also didn't surprise me that Zayden supported the South , like from the moment they all met up and she's in the trees like they obviously are up to have us , yeah , or like he's coming in with like the two other people from like flying missions and stuff like you know like where , where's he going ?

Speaker 1

yeah , come on Violet , like use that scribe brain of yours . Where's he going , blinded by love ? Yeah , um , I will say I was surprised by one , like bonding with two dragons .

Speaker 1

Like that was fun , and then , as well as the fairy tale creatures not them being real that wasn't surprising . But that the North isn't sharing that information , true , so like it's a war college , they literally one of their classes is talking about what's going on and what they would do to stop it , and so obviously they'll probably get into it more in the next book . But it's like what is at play that they're like . Why aren't they saying it ? Because they touch like in the description of the book of like leadership might be up to something , but we still don't actually know . Besides , them like withholding the information , we don't know why . So that kind of surprised me a little bit .

Speaker 2

um of just like huh like why would you like erase this from history if it's clearly a problem that ?

Speaker 1

could potentially affect you in the future and like maybe do you think that's why dragons aren't bonding , because you're not giving your riders enough information , like you're giving them like kind of dummies , like they don't know what's going on in the world . True ? Very valid points yeah , question for you with your mixed feelings do you think you'll read the rest of the series as it comes out ?

Speaker 2

so I did buy the second book . I own the second book . I'm gonna read the second book uh , past that will depend on how the second book goes because I really debated whether I wanted to or not . I enjoyed it for what it was but I'm like , is this really something I want to continue and get into ? I wasn't so sold , but what really got me was the really mixed reviews of the second book . I feel like the people if you take the people who loved Fourth Wing like absolutely loved and devoured Fourth wing as a group , you split them in half . Half of them felt the same exact way about this second book . The other half hated it like they had such and it's like such strong feelings on opposite ends of the camp for this which is interesting because you normally don't look at reviews beforehand well , it's not even that I was looking at reviews .

Speaker 2

It was well before we even talked about reading fourth wing when the second book came out . I just remember on tiktok people constantly talking about it . So I know absolutely nothing about what's going on , other than people were super , were in either one camp or the other . They either absolutely hated it and were like why did you do this ? What did you do ? Like you totally ruined it , or absolutely loved it and found it like super interesting and like are excited to read the rest of the series . So that intrigued me enough . I'm kind of curious like okay , what did she do ? That was so polarizing , so I did buy the second book . I'm going to read the second book . We'll see how I feel , which camp I end up in or if maybe I make my own . That's not uncommon for me either as to whether I'm going to continue to continue the series . But as to whether I'm going to continue , continue the series , yeah , but that's my two cents . What about you , darby ?

Speaker 1

Yeah , I'm going to read it . I like , thoroughly enjoyed it , and I want to know what happens .

Speaker 2

It was very entertaining .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I didn't like I knew it wasn't going to be no Sarah Jane Mass , but even with things being like predictable one , I like I think I dumb my brain down when I read . Anyway , so like everything was great for me . I really enjoyed it . I really liked like the characters besides Dane and like how they're written and the dialogue and stuff . So I want to learn

Final Thoughts and Star Ratings

Speaker 1

more . Yeah .

Speaker 2

So like what was your start rating ? Final thoughts .

Speaker 1

I gave this book a 4.7 . A solid fantasy , though similar to others . It was like puzzled together very well , um , and kind of like I just said . Besides , dane , I enjoyed the characters and their motives . It made me giggle at times , made me gasp , it made me say like knew it . But yeah , um , it was a good book . I really liked it . I was a little overhyped at least the ending ending was but it was good . I like it .

Speaker 2

How about you ? Three stars for me ? So just because , yeah , I liked parts of it and I didn't like other parts of it . So , yeah , I did enjoy the action , the world building , the magic system is really cool with the dragons , and it was a well thought out book . Like it didn't have any like immediate plot holes for me or anything Like it flowed well , like it was fairly well written in my opinion , but the content of it itself sometimes got really frustrating or just kind of felt unoriginal a lot Like I've already seen this , I've already read this kind of thing .

Speaker 2

I'm not going to go back into it , just talked about a lot of the things that I didn't like . But I will say with this book I think it is a fantastic introduction to romanticy . So if you're somebody who kind of wants to try and dabble in like the fantasy romanticy realm it's maybe not like what you typically read this is a fantastic introductory book into that genre . I feel like it's not too overwhelming with any of the like crazy worlds or the magic system or anything . It's easy to understand , um , and it'll give you a really good idea of what to expect moving forward in the genre and as you get deeper and further into it , to decide whether , like this is for you or not . I would agree with that . Yeah , so that's my two cents fourth wing .

Speaker 1

We did it . I feel like we were so behind on this , like . I feel like everyone and their mother has already read this but we did it . We finally read it .

Speaker 2

And now we're going to get to the second book and then we'll be all caught up for anything else that happens .

Speaker 1

No , spoilers for us ? Nope . So yeah , that was fourth wing . A little podcast reminder , podcast reminder . This is going to be our only episode for june , but we shall be back to our regular , regularly scheduled program in july with a fun book topic episode and then another new book club book but we'll announce that book club book there in that first episode in july .

Or if there's something that you've never heard us talk about that you want to know if we like or don't like , send us those recommendations so we can learn and find

Borrows & Returns

Speaker 1

out Absolutely . But on that note of borrows and returns , what are your borrows and returns , mikayla ?

Speaker 2

So , not a lot , so it's going to be a quick one for me again , but I do actually have a return . Um , I did , I mean yes , but um , my returns . This time I did finish wild by cheryl strayed . I gave it four stars . I thought it was really well done . I did it on audio .

Speaker 2

Um , it got kind of long-winded at some points for me , um , and the ending I was . I guess it was more of an expectations thing for me , where I was expecting more of like a moral of the story , like , uh , gain something from this for me myself . Yeah , but that's not on the author , because she didn't really promise that . I guess that's just kind of what I was expecting from all the hype of it . But it really is just her story and what she gained from this experience . And it is an amazing experience where she goes and hikes the Pacific Crest Trail all the way from New Mexico up to Oregon by herself as a woman . Incredible story , incredible journey . Really enjoyed listening to it and hearing all , all the adventures and crazy things that went on . So I do recommend it , um , but it's not a self-help book , so if you have that expectation going into it , kind of like I did , thinking it was like a memoir self-help book .

Speaker 1

It's not I think that's good to know like it's very much more .

Speaker 2

It's a , it's a true memoir . This is her story kind of thing , but with that in mind , still really really good . I'm currently reading finally again getting into it cersei by madeline miller . I'm about after it . I am I'm loving it . So far , I'm about halfway through , really really happy with this book . It's I love her writing . Her writing is phenomenal . It's so well done , um , and it's fun for me because I used to be a huge greek mythology nerd growing up , um , especially like middle school not not a bad like , but I can see that .

Speaker 2

Oh , it's , it was my thing especially middle school , early high school . Like I loved reading like , even just like quote-unquote non-fiction . Obviously mythology still is fiction but um , books about it so . But I've been out of it for a while . So it's kind of fun going back and reading this and like pulling back the memories from , uh , all the different myths and like trying to make those connections before she makes the full circle connection with them all and like who this person is within whatever myth is . Like going on , so I'm enjoying it so far , so finally getting into it .

Speaker 1

That's good . I think think you and Josh should be dressed up as Greek goddesses . Oh for Halloween , that would be fun .

Speaker 2

That would be fun . I'll have to convince him to wear a toga , but it shouldn't be too hard . He was Tinkerbell when you were so young . There's no convincing , you're so right . In case you didn't catch that , I think it was two years ago . For Halloween , josh and I went as Peter Pan and Tinkerbell , but I was Peter Pan and he was Tinkerbell , so you're right . Getting him to wear a toga should not be all that difficult . I don't think that'll be hard . Anyway , what are you reading ? What are your bars and returns ?

Speaker 1

I kind of got like You're killing it . Yeah , I will say a lot of them were audiobooks , but um hey reading is reading yeah , well , obviously , fourth wing is a return .

Speaker 1

Funny story is one of my returns , so I've closed out my emily henry binge . It was such a good story and I wanted to be in this like world setting , like forever , like it was just . It was so good , like I loved the characters , they were so fun , so I gave that one five stars . Um , I am finding it so hard , though . Emily henry is like why I started listening to audiobooks and now it's like , oh my gosh , every other audiobook person sucks like I don't know , have you been able ?

Speaker 2

I think I've heard people are able to find new books with the narrator because you love the narrator , right , yeah , I think I need to do that .

Speaker 1

So we just read the Nightingale and one of my former coworkers said that that audiobook was really good . So maybe if I read another book by that author , but audiobook , then I would like it . But so anyway , funny stories is one of my returns and it was so good . And then I finished the firebird trilogy did you love it a ? Million worlds with you .

Speaker 1

I gave it five stars fantastic um , a really great ending to the series . I loved how she tied everything together and you could tell her writing grew with each book because I like , if you remember , when we talked about it , it was kind of like childish or definitely like 2014 setting , 2012 setting , so it's still not incredible , but it definitely grew and the complexities of the different dimensions was really fun to keep up with at the end . So a really happy read and I hope you read the rest of the show .

Speaker 2

I'm planning on it . It is going to happen when we'll see , but it is .

Speaker 1

I do own them and it will happen it was good , though I was like wow , like it , just like felt good , it was like a good closing . Yeah , um , and then borrows . So I'm gonna open up iron flame tonight probably , and bring it with me on my honeymoon next week . Woo Ice one , but I'm excited to get back into it . And then I think this will be fun , because you read this and rated this highly . I tried to do the fine print . I had to not finish it , that's okay .

Speaker 1

It was so cringy it is and so bad . I really tried to finish it . Mikaela knows I have finished books before that were really bad , but like it was making me nauseous , like it was so unrealistic it moved unnaturally for me . I needed more like backstory , like I don't know it was so bad . But I was looking at reviews because a lot of people that I'm friends with like rated it pretty well , like they liked it . So I don't know if it was because I was doing audiobook , but like it was awful I can't .

Speaker 2

It was so bad . It was so bad . I can't speak from the audiobook perspective because I don't . I don't do fiction audiobooks , but I will say everything you said , completely valid . Even though I have read it and rated it highly , I don't even remember . I think it's like a four star or something yeah , it's definitely more than three .

Speaker 1

I know that I think it was a force .

Speaker 2

It wasn't a five star , it was a four star , I think . For me , um , and everything you said , I still 100 agree with it it is . But for me that book was one of those that it's just like what you're in the mood for at that time and you go into it at least for me when I was going into it , expecting it to be exactly like that , but I don't know , it was like the time or the feeling that I was . It was like what I wanted at that point and I am a Disney adult and it is kind of like very heavily based on like Disney parks kind of At least . Especially that first book , the first book , a hundred percent , is the underground tunnels .

Speaker 1

I'm like okay , disney . I'm like yeah , no , it's where's the mouse .

Speaker 2

It's disney rebranded for copyright infringement . So , uh , I think that's why I enjoyed it , but I totally understand why you did it and there's I get it .

Speaker 1

I understand I'm gonna have to play you some of the audiobook though , because so they do like dual point of view and they have two different voice actors . And the guy , like I won't be able to do it because I have a high-pitched voice , but it's such a deep voice that for the actor which it's they're probably trying to make him sound like husky , like sexy whatever , but he has , like , this vibration to his voice that is almost like annoying and it's definitely like he's doing it to try and be like hot , but like I can't even explain it .

Speaker 1

But I really apologize to the actor who plays it . I'm sure you're great and obviously lots of people love you . It's a niche thing , yeah .

Speaker 2

Yeah , no , I can't do it , that was an attempted borrow , but quickly returned . That's OK . That's OK , yeah , yeah . For any of you listening , I think it's dreamland series or something like that . Um , first one was good in my opinion . Second one is my favorite .

Speaker 1

third one was a do not finish for me , so and the second one was the one that I initially wanted to read , but I was trying to do it like in order , but I think they're kind of standalone-ish they are kind of like it helps if you have , like , the knowledge of the backstory , because it kind of interweaves between all of them .

Speaker 2

But you could in theory still read the books by themselves , in whatever order , and enjoy them for what they are .

Speaker 1

I will not be reading the second story now because I'm going to starve me .

Speaker 2

You know it's okay .

Speaker 1

This is what makes this great is because we have all these different opinions on all these different books and we can talk about them like this . It was funny , though , as soon as I like . It was like as soon as audiobook started , I was like , oh no .

Speaker 2

It's like that meme , that oh , oh no .

Speaker 1

Yeah , basically , and I knew that you had rated it and I was like I cannot wait to bash on this with Michaela .

Speaker 2

Totally get it . No hard feelings yeah .

Speaker 1
