Happy Halloween!

Speaker 1

Boo , are you scared ? Oh , so scary . Oh my gosh , happy spooky season . Woo , halloween . So this is kind of like a little spinoff or maybe a book blender episode again , but it's Halloween themed .

Speaker 2

We love the spooky season , big spooky girls .

Speaker 1

Yeah , so we wanted to spend a whole episode just talking about Halloween and kind of how it relates to some of our favorite book characters , costumes , traditions .

Speaker 2

Have some fun discussions of like what ifs for books and Halloween and it'll be a fun time .

Speaker 1

Yeah , and before we get into it , we want to remind you for next book club , book , book , talk book . It is the X-Hex by Erin Sterling . So go ahead and read that this month so that you can listen to us talk about it .

Speaker 2

I've already started it . It's super cute and it's great for Halloween . Puts you right in the vibe .

Speaker 1

Yay , I bought it at Barnes and Noble over the weekend . I'm excited to start it .

Speaker 2

It's a good one . Let's get into it . All right . So

Haunting Books

Speaker 2

I found this question online . I'm not going to lie . I looked up a lot of these questions . I wish I was creative enough to come up with them myself , but I thought it was such a cute idea . So , with them myself , but I thought it was such a cute idea . So what books haunt you the most ? We'll do like friendliest haunt and most frightening haunt Haunt , meaning like what do you think about all the time ? What's like on the brain that won't leave you alone .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I will . The word haunt . I was a little confused about it first , but then I got it . I like read your notes on it and was like okay , okay , um . Well , spoiler alert , we both have the same friendliest haunt um for me . Well , I have two for me . Throne of Glass is my friendliest haunt um , it's just brilliantly done and I think it's as close to a perfect series as I think I'll ever read like Agreed .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I'm honestly just going to leave it at that . It's like seemingly perfect , like it's so good and thought out . 12 out of 10 .

Speaker 1

And there are so many characters in there . Yeah , I felt connected to just about all of them . So I'm thinking about them still and , like it's just crazy , I feel like there's so much story that could still be told but at the same time , like it was wrapped up so beautifully , like I don't know . Yeah , so I think about that one a lot . And then the other one is the selection series by , I think , kira Kass , kira Klass , maybe .

Speaker 1

I think that's the author , um , but it was just like such a big one for me in high school that really like hooked me , and I even reread it a few years ago for a second time and it just has so much nostalgia for me . So I still think about that one a lot , just because it's just one that was really big for me when I was younger and so I just I like thinking about it .

Speaker 2

I remember I read the first one Because of your recommendation and it was a really cool concept . I think I would have really enjoyed it . I think I would have really enjoyed it if I found it in high school .

Speaker 1

In high school , yeah , when I reread it I was like okay , definitely doesn't like hold up to what I've been reading lately , but for the time but .

Speaker 2

I see the vision Absolutely . Yeah , it was like it's very much like Bachelor meets like Hunger Games . Yeah , it's all about that vibe .

Speaker 1

Yeah , so good , really , really unique concept yeah , and just like cute , and so that one that those are my friendliest haunts . What about your friendliest haunts ?

Speaker 2

friendly , I mean thrown a glass yeah you . Just that is . It haunts me night and day , morning , noon and night . It's what I . It is everything I always think about the characters , whether it's quotes that come up or situations that they got themselves in that I come back to myself like , thinking about like how did Sarah come up with this ? And all the connections coming back from like for book one all the way to the last book . Um , it just all consumes my ever waking moments it is so good it is so good and I cannot recommend it enough .

Speaker 2

Phenomenal , friendliest haunt for sure , and there's like no question , like that's it for me . Yeah , but a frightening haunt though . There's this one book called the Night and Its Moon by Piper CJ , and it is a personal one for me . I'm not going to say it was a bad book because , like it might not have been . I had to dnf it for very specific reasons . Uh , I don't think like the story in itself was bad or the writing was horrible . It wasn't great but it wasn't horrible .

Speaker 2

But it basically started talking about these . Like the story is around these two girls and when you meet them they're really young and they're in like an orphanage kind of thing and they grow up and it she creates for , like the first you know good section of the book , this like sister bond between the two of them . Um , so when I'm reading it is I very much like imagine myself and my sister and like our bond , and I kind of like projected that onto these characters . Well , about a third the way through the book , all of a sudden they do a complete 180 and they go from sisters to like lovers and like being in love with each other . And I'm like you . I just couldn't do it . I couldn't , I could not get it like I'm already having , like the image of like you and me and my sister in my brain reading this .

Speaker 2

I couldn't make that flip with her . I know it's like been done and it doesn't bother me . Before , where you do like you know , brother , sister , relationship , like friends to lovers , like that happens all the time . It's not an unusual , but for this one specifically , just the way I imagined it it was really like put yourself in it .

Speaker 2

Yes it was too icky for me , I had to stop . And now every time I see the book , I just like get a little shiver . I'm like , no , I can't . I can't think about it , it's weird . So that one's definitely my most frightening haunt . Yeah , what about you ?

Speaker 1

so I'm kind of scared to say this one , um , but this is what I thought of . So this is a hot take , but it was the seven husbands of emma and hugo interesting , like it was written so well and it was an incredible book , like great book , but I was really looking forward to reading about seven different husbands . So I feel you it like it's it's not a bad book , but just it's frightening in the sense of like I was like really excited for you know like what the cover had said seven different husbands , like that's cool , like let's learn about all seven of them . And then it's a little different expectations .

Speaker 1

Yeah , yeah , I get that really not as like deeply frightening as yours , but definitely like just yeah , I don't know it's .

Speaker 2

It's disappointing when you have the expectation of one thing and , even though it can be well done , it's just completely different than yeah , yeah , totally different , but I I will say it was still written well , a good story .

Speaker 1

That just frightens me that I had no idea .

Speaker 2

Yeah , it was gonna be different than what I thought well , speaking of frightening

Plots Twists Tricks

Speaker 2

, what plot twists have you read that have been more like trick than treat , not necessarily great plot twist . You're like oh , I love it , but more like oh my gosh wait what ?

Speaker 1

yeah , so , um a plot twist for me that I was like oh , came from the hunting wives , which was spoiler warning yes , spoiler warning . So , mikaela , we read this book in our book club before we started this podcast . Mikaela didn't finish the book . I did not Because the plot twist I would say was probably tricky for you as well , but it's a pretty like mid-book in my opinion .

Speaker 1

Some people might like it With kind of poor writing , but they're like constant . It's these wives that are like , constantly cheating on their husbands and and like getting drunk all the time , like literally I think in every chapter , like the main character is like having another drink and it was just like a lot . But the most plot twisty and icky part is that they're cheating on their husbands like with high school boys . And it's just like weird , like it's not .

Speaker 2

They're like 30 .

Speaker 1

Yeah , like none of it is done well . They're like 30 yeah , like none of it is done well . And even though they're 30 , they probably have the maturity of like us , like 20 year old , 19 year old maybe , like it just yeah yeah , that was an icky one too yeah , so it just wasn't great .

Speaker 1

I read it and like the ending I can't even remember like the full ending and I know there was like some sort of resolution and like there was another plot twist but again , I just was like I couldn't get over the fact of like girl put the bottle down and like like give the boy his Letterman jacket back , like here you are .

Speaker 2

Yeah , that if it . If they were at least in college , I feel like I could have gone through it , but because it's a high school , cheating with , like , each other's husbands , like that .

Speaker 1

Exactly this is weird , I don't know . So that was a little tricky for me . No treats there , what ?

Speaker 2

about you . I agree with you on that one um mine is less a true plot twist and more um me just playing myself . When I read this book , I feel like that happens kind of often it really does .

Speaker 2

Unfortunately I have not learned my lesson , but the book was House of Salt and Sorrows by Aaron A Craig . I went in to this book . It was supposed to be kind of like a reimagining of the Twelve Dancing Princesses , which I was like , ooh interesting , I like that , let's do it . And I thought it was going to be more like fantasy , dark romance . That was me that was my bad , it ended up being a horror book .

Speaker 1

Oh my God , Definitely dark .

Speaker 2

I'm reading this and it's just getting darker and darker . Luckily , it wasn't anything intense Like I was still able to like read it and enjoy it for what it was . Yeah . Anything intense like I was still able to like read it and enjoy it for what it was yeah . But I was just waiting for , like the , the romance to kick in . I was like I'm waiting and I'm like all of a sudden I'm getting to the very end of this book . I'm like this is getting really deep and dark . I'm like did I what ? What ?

Speaker 1

did I pick up romance at all ? There is a little bit , but not like , not enough , not not to call it a romance book or even a dark romance when you said the 12 dancing princesses , my mind immediately went to barbie yes , I mean that's me imagine like that's what I have in my head going to read this book , like turning into the upside down , like it's just getting darker and darker .

Speaker 2

It's like slowly facing . It's like one of those that you're like smiling as you're reading and then slowly it starts facing . You're like wait , what's going on ? I look it up and then sure enough , yeah , it's . It's supposed to be a horror book . Oh my god , do princesses die ? Um , I honestly don't remember . I think so . Yeah , a lot of people died . I do remember that . Um , it was well done . I think I rated it like three stars by the end , but that was a major plot twist for me it's not what I was expecting .

Speaker 2

That's so funny played myself on that .

Speaker 1

Wait , that's really , they pulled a trick on you . They did , they did , they did and , ironically , I think it was around this time too that I read it . So it all worked out anyway .

Speaker 2

So spooky season , but yeah , that was definitely the biggest trick on me .

Speaker 1

We didn't have this written down , but I don't think we're really into spooky stuff . But are there any spooky books that you've ever read that you've been really into ?

Speaker 2

um , just that one really . I do enjoy the never after series by um emily mcintyre I think that's her name , um , but she does like the dark romance retellings of like disney stories .

Speaker 1

I read that one hooked um .

Speaker 2

I'm trying to remember scarred are the two that I've read . I have a few others of her like waiting to be read but I wouldn't call those like spooky .

Speaker 1

I mean they're not , they're more like dark romance kind of thing they have like darker themes .

Speaker 2

I feel like yeah , um , I don't think I've ever read like a true , like scary horror book no , I mean just the one , and I wouldn't even really consider that like a truly dark , spooky , scary , because I don't like horror stuff at all .

Speaker 1

I'm the . I was the child in elementary school . Like I never have read goosebumps yeah , I was told it was scary . I didn't . I never read it yeah , it's not .

Speaker 2

It's not my vibe . I always say that I'm definitely more of a mickey's not so scary halloween party girly than a halloween horror night girly um , so yeah , the scariest one was house of salt and sorrow , and even that one wasn't , yeah , horrible either . I got lucky there , okay I was curious .

Speaker 1

But what about you ? Did you have ? No , no , yeah , no , I haven't . But like part of me is like no , never mind . I was gonna say I was intrigued , but then I thought about it for two more seconds and never mind , I'm not intrigued , I don't want any recommendations .

Speaker 2

Moving

It's All About the Villains

Speaker 2

on , moving on , let's talk villains .

Speaker 1

Yeah .

Speaker 2

Who's the worst villain ? Who's your favorite villain ? Give them to me .

Speaker 1

Okay , so worst for me , and I definitely it was like hard for me to think about . But maybe the villain in the Crescent City series Can't really speak about this too much because someone cough cough , michaela hasn't read it all . I'm sorry , I will get to it , I promise . But yeah , I wish I could divulge further into my thoughts on this one , but yeah , yeah , I'm just going to leave it there . I can't spoil anything for Michaela or the villain in the Red Queen series . Again , I don't like spoil anything for Miguel or the villain in the Red Queen series Again , I don't really want to spoil things , but like he was decent but not great , like I just wanted like more .

Speaker 1

Like , when I talk about my favorite or the best villain , like they had so much , like they just had so much thought put into things . I don't like villains who are like a villain because they've like gone mad and then they're making like rash decisions , like I like a villain who's like no , I'm thinking about torturing you and I know why , and here's the backstory like like I don't want a villain to be a villain just because , like they like they need like a purpose as a villain and trauma . Yeah , and I feel like , though , the villain in the Red Queen series like had like a reason to be a villain , like it wasn't enough and it wasn't utilized well , that makes sense . So I would say that , for my worst , for my best again , I'm echoing Michaela's thoughts . So spoiler alert for who her best villain is . But it is Queen Maeve . She's just iconic , I feel .

Speaker 2

Yeah , so she did us all dirty in um throne of glass yeah , don't get me wrong , I hated her while reading throne of glass but like outside perspective looking back , you gotta respect the grind . She knew what she wanted and in theory what she wanted wasn't like world domination , she just wanted to get away from her world and she was gonna do whatever it takes to do that and to live comfortably , and you know I can respect that but to to say some more stuff about her .

Speaker 1

Um , the blood bonds make me sick and her cunningness is crazy , like because you can say , yeah , she's her . Like what she wanted necessarily wasn't crazy , but then the way she's doing things and running things , like no kind of , I said , um , she's the chris chris kardashian of villains .

Speaker 2

I love that . That is the perfect definition for her villains work hard , but Maeve works harder . Yes , yes , yes , yes .

Speaker 1

That's perfect . So do you have any more thoughts on Maeve being your best villain ? I just think .

Speaker 2

I mean she was causing harm , but she wasn't causing like true harm , she just knew what she wanted . I think Fenris would beg to differ . That's true , but you know , like I said , it's outside perspective . Looking back , in the middle of reading it , I'm like I hate her , but on the outside I'm like I kind of understand her . You know , she just wants to protect her peace .

Speaker 1

The part with gosh . I haven't read it in a while , but the part with her and Dorian right Aren't they have like some scenes written together ?

Speaker 2

With Maeve .

Speaker 1

Yeah right , oh yeah , yeah , yeah , yeah right , oh yeah , that part . I was like what the heck ? Like there's just some like , like we said , there are a lot of characters in throne of glass . She made her way around town like she offended everyone , yeah she was just a well-written villain yeah , yeah , what about your worst ? Who's your ?

Speaker 2

um your worst villain I had a really hard time choosing a true villain , so I took creative liberties . Here it's the worst villain is author kristin hannah , for putting me through the trauma she did with the nightingale . Yeah , she lulled me into this false sense of security , just to leave me with a gaping hole in my heart that I have still yet to heal .

Speaker 1

So she's my true villain , but I do love her books but like , but it was written so well , I'm okay with it oh yeah , my heart is still gone from that part . I like the way you took that . I like the way you took that . Um , I'm gonna start crying if we talk about her for too long . Man , she really is a bully .

Speaker 2

Moving on , I'm just kidding incredible author .

Speaker 1

If you haven't read the night nightingale , go read it . Then listen to our episode on it and cry with us .

Speaker 2

Yes , phenomenal , phenomenal , but you will be left traumatized . Uh , fair warning , but it's the best kind of yeah a good trauma . Yeah , you'll be recommending this trauma to your therapist okay

It's a Bookish Halloween Party!

Speaker 2

, um , this is where we get a little fun . So let's say , we're having a bookish halloween party , um , and all of your favorite characters are invited . What are is the like the setting from a book you would choose like to host the party okay .

Speaker 1

So I really took this like , so literally of like fall , autumn , and so I chose the autumn court from the Court of Thorns and Roses . I love it Because I bet it's just , you know , picture perfect of what you want fall and autumn to look like , gorgeous . So that's my setting , minus the autumn king Eris can stay .

Speaker 2

Eris , shout out you . For me it was the bone quarter from Crescent City , but minus all of the dead things trying to kill you . Um , obviously , because we want to have a good time . Uh , if they promise not to kill you , you can they can be invited . That's fine . But like we're all chill and having a good time and I think it's spooky and fun and it's still like kind of close to the city for you to get back home and that's true .

Speaker 1

That's true . I like , I like that answer . All right , who are you inviting and what are your predictions for how your fave characters are going to enjoy the party ?

Speaker 2

so obviously all my favorite characters are invited . So everybody sergey , mass , um , but , and a few others sprinkled in um . But there's only two true characters that I care about at this halloween party and that'd be the surreal from akatar , because I need to know the tea on everybody there , like I want to know all the drama , I want to know all the inside gossip for , like , characters not related to akatar , like I want to know what's going on at six of crows clan I want the tea on me .

Speaker 1

Who's my mate ?

Speaker 2

I hope it's justin , just like I want to know that would be awkward if it wasn't , but yeah , I want to talk to them , I want to get the . I want to know all the gossip between all for all my favorite characters that are like outside of the sergio mass world . That'd be nice , yeah , and also , I really want the bone dog from nettle and bone by t kingfisher , because he's adorable and spooky and he's just the goodest boy and I think he would bring such a life to the party despite being dead .

Speaker 1

Oh , my gosh . I feel like he'd be a good cuddler too , even though he's just boned . Those are good characters . Thank you , those are really good .

Speaker 2

As far as what's going on predictions for my party , I definitely think that Cassian and Aelin would get into a fight over far as like what's going on predictions for my party , I definitely think that cassian and alen would get into a fight over who has the best costume . Um , meanwhile , jasper from six of crows would actually win , but because he stole the contest , not because he actually won , because thieves , and that's just how it works . But that's that's kind of like my predictions for how my party would go okay about you ?

Speaker 1

that sounds like a fun party .

Speaker 1

I would love an invite absolutely always invited thanks so I want all my dark-haired shadow boys to be there so I'm talking reese , kai zayden , rain , lorkin , dorian um , and then the only other females I really thought of were that I the females that I would want , there would just be Ailyn and Elide , um , and I think that would be it . Those are the people that I want there , and I would love for all the men to , you know , just be giving me attention , but I think all of the men would be competing for Ailyn's attention , and then Elide and I could just be like talking on the side , like watching it all go down and just like seeing what they would do I don't know .

Speaker 2

I feel like you'd get their attention because I think they'd get annoyed with ailyn . Thank , you .

Speaker 1

Well , unfortunately , lorkin I mean they all , this is all if they didn't have their girls , yeah , that would just be like really , really fun . Yeah , I really just took this as a liberty to meet with the boys , all the boys .

Speaker 2

I mean hey , they're invited to my party too .

Speaker 1

Yeah , no girls allowed , just kidding . But I think also it would like start off as a halloween party and I do think , though , because they're all like men , I think it would turn into some sort of like fighting ring competition , like if we were to have like a costume contest , like the contest would be like who can win in this fight , or something to be able to get it . So that would just be fun to watch too . Aylin Elad and I could just like judge them their costumes .

Speaker 2

So it would be fun , I love it . What a time , good times . If only this could be true .

Speaker 1

I know I hope I dreamed about it tonight yes , speaking of

Let's Talk Costumes

Speaker 1

costumes though let's get like personal , just like talk about fun stuff .

Speaker 2

Um so , halloween , what was your favorite costume you ever worn ? And then , what costumes do you dread seeing every year ?

Speaker 1

okay . So for some reason I was like obsessed with this peacock costume in high school . Um , I wore it like multiple times throughout like the years of owning it , and it took like it was a like a costume from party city and it was obviously like a sexy peacock which like what is that ? Yeah , but for some reason I was obsessed with it .

Speaker 2

I love it . And I mean , I still think it's kind of unique oh very , but it fits the vibe of a peacock , because peacocks are all about like showing off and strutting your stuff , yeah , but it didn't have like .

Speaker 1

So okay , let me try and paint it for you . So it was like a little black , like tutu type thing , and then like a corset that had like kind of like the . It was like black with like peacocky blues , and then just like a couple little feathers on like the sternum area and it was strapless . And then you had like a little choker that had like one singular peacock feather and , and then you had like a little clip that went in your hair that then had a couple little feathers sticking out so you didn't have , like a full fan of feathers .

Speaker 2

I'm imagining like can can dancer , yes , kind of thing yeah , similar to that .

Speaker 1

So I was obsessed with that . And then also , I think , really unique and weird , I was a sea anemone one time . What that means is I basically just blew up a bunch of the long balloons that you use for balloon animals and I just attached them to my body and I was a sea anemone . There was a lot of popping and a lot of shrieks from me getting scared when the balloon popped . When was this ? This was in college , um . It was for like a fundraising thing where you like dressed up and then asked people for donations and I took liberties on being the weirdest person dressed up because I was going to get the most attention and hopefully the most donations for our fundraiser , um , which I think worked anywho , so smart . Those are some of my faves . I really love doing like fun out there costumes . Now that I'm looking back at this , this is really funny because for least favorite costumes one of the ones I said was sexy food slash animals and a peacock's an animal so I'm really just played yourself

Speaker 1

yeah , so I guess it depends on the animal . Peacocks are an exception . I feel like that's a unique animal , yeah , but typically when it's like a sexy dog and this is no hate like people look good in all their like sexy halloween costumes , so this is just like . Sometimes , though , when I see certain like dogs , or like when you're trying to make food look sexy , like they're just kind of like a little weird and then also overdone like disney characters . They're just done so much , which , again , they're cute , so like keep doing them , but it's just something that I see that I'm like all right , this is . I've seen this buzz light year like one piece , so often like easy and people don't put thought into it yeah , so those are probably my faves and least faves .

Speaker 1

What about you ?

Speaker 2

um favorites that I've worn was a tie between one year I think it was seventh grade I was a pilot and I got to wear my dad's old like flight suit and his old flight helmet and it was just like cool getting got to wear my dad's old like flight suit and his old flight helmet and it was just like cool getting like to wear that , because you see him like wearing it all every all the time , like growing up , and so I got to wear that and it was really comfortable too . So like that was fun and like nostalgic for me . But then the funniest one I think I did was in sixth grade . I was a grandma where I like wore bathrobe and I put curlers in my hair and I did like a face mask and I was just like acting all grouchy and grumpy the whole time .

Speaker 2

So normal , honestly yeah , that was a fun one those do sound fun . I can like picture you in both of them , like even right now yeah those are cute I was always more of the like just trying to find like funny fun , like type of costumes . Um , I don't know , like I never like doing , like the finding things at spirit halloween , like I always like kind of creating my own costume , even if it was something you could find like .

Speaker 2

One year I went as like pebbles , like I could have easily found like a pebbles costume . Yeah , it was a fun one . I just cut my hair short that year too , so it's like even better for like a little high pony . But I could have made it easy on myself and just got in a costume . But I was like , no , I'm gonna be unique and original and I'm gonna make my own so and I made it glow in the dark .

Speaker 2

I love it . So I love for Halloween like that's what I always love to do is finding fun stuff that I could just do myself . But that kind of leads into my least favorite costumes . I really don't like the stereotypical no-thought costumes , so kind of like what you were saying .

Speaker 2

with the animals . You're dressing up as a black cat , or when people do the witch , or guys do Superman or a greaser . It just requires zero thought , zero effort . You're just like throwing something together which can be fine depending on the situation , like if you're going to something last minute , so you have to throw something together , but if you're like , truly planning on participating , it's like put in some effort , make it original it doesn't have to like , make it your own like it doesn't have to be original , but like , make it your own well it's like .

Speaker 2

for me it doesn't even have to be anything like extensive , like people do like t-shirt costumes all the time . I'm not even opposed to that if you're creative with it you know Like I'm trying to think of like an example .

Speaker 2

I've seen where it's like and dogs but they have like the dogs and the cats , yeah , yes , exactly the serial killer with the cereal box and like the knife through it . Like it's so simple as far as like costume concern , but there's like creativeness to it , there's thought behind it . Yeah , that's what I appreciate , versus when you're just like throwing something together and there's no thought . I'm like let's , let's put a little fun into it . Yeah , I get that , so that's where I get bored with it , but that's just my opinion .

Speaker 2

But obviously no hate to anybody who does it again , just opinions .

Speaker 1

I literally already contradicted myself with an animal , so everyone , you do you and you're gonna look great . But another fun thing with costumes what are some bookish costume ideas that we could give our listeners that are looking for a fun and unique halloween costume ?

Speaker 2

so this one was a little challenging for me to think of , but kind of going off of , like the t-shirt , one that I thought was kind of funny . Yeah , I don't know how you would do it . Give me some time and maybe we'll put it on instagram as a as a suggestion . But if you did , like an endless tbr where you wore a t-shirt with like a bunch of books all over it , I feel like that's the scariest thing for any reader to see . It's like the endless tbr . There's not enough time to read all the books you want um .

Speaker 2

So that was one that I thought was like an easy , like bookish one . You could also do like a more generic like book worm , which I think would be cute .

Speaker 1

That's really cute .

Speaker 2

Oh my gosh , I love that . Um , and then I had to throw in the cereal too . Yeah , that's a good one . I think that'd be a fun one . It's kind of like spooky , but it's like fun and you can bring a teacup and like make it and the girls that get it , get it absolutely so what about you ?

Speaker 1

what are some ones you're good , okay , one that I think is like so fun and would be like so , like hot is thera under the mountain yes , so like um , she , for those who don't know , she's basically wearing like these like silk things that just cover the private parts .

Speaker 1

So it's like not even like a dress , but I feel like it could be done really well . I feel like it could be a little scary if not done well , but if done well , I feel like that could be really like If you drape it right and maybe add a belt or something to keep it secure .

Speaker 2

Yeah , Think very like Princess Leia .

Speaker 1

Yes , slave Slave Leia yes , slave . Leia , like that kind of vibe , but I feel like it's also ethereal .

Speaker 2

It's elevated .

Speaker 1

yes , Because I think it's like shiny silk . Yeah , I feel like that could be really cool . Honestly , any sort of leather bodysuit could be used for most female main characters , you're not wrong .

Speaker 1

So , pick who you want and you can do that . I was thinking because I recently read Carvel and they had some really like neat outfits and extravagant dresses that I think you could do cool couples costume here and it's not like a stereotypical , like clown costume or like ringleader Like . I feel like this would definitely take some more thought and effort that I don't have , but I feel like you could get something from this book . And then another couple's costume that I thought could be fun were the dragons from fourth wing so not like the people , but the dragons yes

Speaker 2

and like that could be cool because they had the guy could be like all black . Then you're in like the gold .

Speaker 1

Yeah , cute , yeah I love that one actually . No , I wasn't thinking of them , I was thinking of the all black and then the blue . Oh , true , true yeah that's , but that's cute too . You could do a whole family and then the gold one could be the kid . Oh my god , adorable . Okay , we even have family costumes here book family . That's perfect . Yeah , add it to the list . Yeah , so that's a good one those are some of the ones I thought of they're pretty fun .

Speaker 2

They are fun . I like them . All right , but let's

Halloween Nostalgia and Traditions

Speaker 2

talk halloween traditions . Did you have any fun halloween traditions growing up ?

Speaker 1

so probably my biggest family halloween tradition was watching dis Disney Channel original movies with my sister . Iconic , yeah , so good . All the Halloween towns , Twitches , Hocus , Pocus , Monster Under the Bet . I Don't Look Under the Bet . Whatever the Boogeyman one is that one . The list just goes on and on . If it was a disney channel halloween movie , I've probably seen it .

Speaker 2

I watched the heck out of twitches . That was my . Really I love that one so much . My sister and I would like take a . Take a sister and like pretend to be them like pretend when you're little .

Speaker 1

Also the one this one isn't technically like halloween , but it's still like spooky magic-y . The one , um , with the girl from ally and aj , and it's like a magician school or whatever . I know exactly now .

Speaker 2

You see it or something yeah , I think , or now you see me , or something like it's no wait no , that's the , that's the other movie .

Speaker 1

That's the adult movies .

Speaker 2

It's basically like that , but for kids yes , I know exactly what you're talking about , though .

Speaker 1

That one was also spooky in a way , so I like that one too , oh my gosh , that just unlocked a core memory in my brain .

Speaker 2

Yes , I used to love that one .

Speaker 1

I watched it a couple years ago . I need to go back and watch it Still kind of slapped . So definitely watching those movies and um , so definitely watching those movies , um , and then recently going to halloween horror nights with justin . So growing up I had gone to halloween horror nights , but I am not from orlando , so I would only go once , like , and I'd get just , I'd go one night and then do as many houses as I can , or I'd get like a fast pass so I could do them all .

Speaker 1

But what's crazy to me because I'm just not used to it because I have never lived near theme parks is people that get frequent fear passes , which is almost like an annual pass to Halloween Horror Nights . So I'm like going to houses multiple times now or like I'll go to Halloween Horror Nights and we'll do like two houses and it's just crazy to me . So I'm still getting used to it . But it's a cute tradition that like we do now and I like doing it .

Speaker 1

Even though it's not just Justin and I . We have other people there almost every time , but it's fun .

Speaker 2

I like doing it . That's awesome and it gives you like a chance to pick up on like new details . I feel like and like up on like new details .

Speaker 1

I feel like in , like the houses .

Speaker 2

If you go and do it multiple times , that you like might have missed before .

Speaker 1

Yeah , and because sometimes you'll go into a house and you have like bad timing , so you like don't get scared at all , and like they happen like right before you or right after you , so then it's like you , you did , it's like a waste of a house , almost . So the more you do it like maybe the better chance your timing is in there , which is neat too . Or because sometimes there could be a shift change happening while you're going through the house and you just don't know . So those are things that I never really noticed or realized until then . That makes sense , yeah , but I also think I'm getting a little , um , maybe pretentious , like now . I'm like looking at houses or like the scare zones and I'm like this is so not as good as blah , blah , blah , yeah , but I mean they're all , they're all so good and scary , right . I'm definitely like picking up on more things now . Sure , yeah , what about your traditions ?

Speaker 2

um , so the big thing that my family I told you about this before , but we're gonna tell the pod .

Speaker 2

Yeah , um is , my family used to always watch like the disney halloween sing-along . It was like old , it was on vhs . Um , they filmed it at the haunted mansion in disneyland and it's like only like one of those like half hour literally , like just like the disney sing-along things you see all the time . Um , but it had this whole like story that they're putting together like this halloween party at the Haunted Mansion and these three kids go to try to find more decorations throughout the mansion , but then they come across these different rooms and then it would play the clip of the song from whatever's going on , or whatever movie they pulled it from , or old Disney shows , stuff like that . And obviously we started watching this when I was young .

Speaker 2

I was young , young like we started watching this when I was young , like I was young , young when we started , but I watched this every year through high school like without fail , because it just wasn't halloween unless you like heard it for me like that . That was just like kind of the really what like set the tone for halloween yeah , um and then obviously you move out . You get really old and haven't really old , really old almost 30 um .

Speaker 1

Yeah scary um to all of our listeners that are over 30 years old .

Speaker 2

We know it's not that scary you're young and beautiful , um , but yeah , uh , I haven't watched it in a while and then just last year , my my mom found a link on YouTube for it and she sent it to me , so that I made Josh sit there and watch it with me .

Speaker 1

It made me so happy , made my heart happy , I didn't know he was singing along too . He was . It was a fun time . That's so sweet . That's one of my favorites .

Speaker 2

That's the longest tradition that we have . The other thing that we were really um good about doing every year , it was carving pumpkins . This was definitely more of a me thing than it was my sister . Um , we'd always start off together , but she hated like getting the pumpkins and then , um , she tries her best .

Speaker 2

I give you credit , abby , uh , but she's not the sit down and craft a type of person , so she just kind of like would do something simple and she'd be like all right , I'm done and move on versus for me , I go the complete opposite end of the spectrum , yeah , where I'm like planning and mapping out the perfectionist absolutely exactly what I want , getting it just thin enough and , like each year I'd get more complex as I would learn and grow and do things , and I love the like , the feeling of the guts and everything .

Speaker 2

I always thought that that was like fun and like whatever sensory thing that is . Uh , so that was just always a fun time and like trying to think of like what I what ?

Speaker 1

what can I do with a pumpkin like how can I make it like maybe we can post photos of some of your old pumpkin carving stories on the stories .

Speaker 2

I'll have to go back and find them . But I did like a minion one year I was really proud of , or I did like a tangled themed one ?

Speaker 1

Do you have one picked out for this year that you're going to carve , or are you still thinking ?

Speaker 2

No .

Speaker 1

I'm still thinking .

Speaker 2

I haven't carved a real pumpkin in the past couple years because it's been hard when you're at college . I was living in a sorority house , so there's really no place to put it , um , and then with the apartment I was always afraid of like animals , um , but we're kind of in a good spot now . Last year we didn't carve real pumpkins but I found like fake pumpkins that you could carve , so we did that , um , which is like kind of like a nice play on the tradition , uh , but this year I do really want to find a pumpkin to carve .

Speaker 1

I love that .

Speaker 2

So we'll be thinking , but I'll let you know .

Speaker 1

Speaking of the fake pumpkins , I saw this on TikTok and it was fake pumpkins that you carved and you made like a little fairy , like almost like a door or something , oh cute . And so people had like little moss coming out of it and like they just made it so cool and I was like , okay , maybe I want to do that . Because I enjoy carving pumpkins . But like most crafts , I'm a very crafty person .

Speaker 1

I love to do crafts , but a lot of things I do , I want them to have like purpose and , I guess , longevity , and so it doesn't have enough , like I don't get enough use out of it , sure . So I I like can't justify it sometimes , um . So I think maybe if I carve that it's like more of a real craft , right , so maybe I'll do that no , I totally understand that .

Speaker 2

That's kind of why I got out of it now coming into college , because at least for like , when we're at home , we put it out and you get to see it coming home from school and you're a trick-or-treater . So yeah you actually got a chance to light it up and for other people to see it , versus like in the apartment complex , at least for mine , um , we really don't have anybody that comes by , so I'll see it during the day , but I'm not seeing it at night nobody else is seeing it .

Speaker 1

So I'm like is it really worth the time and the effort , seeing all the skill and effort that you put in exactly so I just definitely something I'm going to continue with my kids .

Speaker 2

I'll definitely get back into um , but I do want to try to carve . Maybe I'll do like a small one or something this year um , just because I do love it . But no , I totally get the . Not having a use for it and the longevity of it does get difficult . Yeah so , but that's why I did . It's really smart , because I did find them last year at target . They started selling the hollowed out fake pumpkins for that exact reason , for they're meant for you .

Speaker 1

They're thin to , to carve them , to keep year over year .

Speaker 2

And then you can keep them forever Cool .

Speaker 1

And so .

Speaker 2

Josh hates the feeling of the carving pumpkin inside and stuff Because he's much more like Particular . He's just like a clean . Oh , yeah , yeah , I don't want to say clean , freak , but like , for lack of a better term , clean freak than I am in terms of that . So it's like the textures and everything . It's like the textures and everything . He he hates that . Um , so it's a nice thing that we could do together , because it's like there was none of that for him , but then I still got the tradition of carving the pumpkins , and so we had a good time .

Speaker 2

That's cute . So for any listeners out there , check out target if you do want longevity with a carved pumpkin because , those were really cool yeah , and if you do make one tag us , you can inspire us .

Speaker 1

And if you use any of our costume ideas , which you should tag us too , because I really want to see or even if you just have your own bookish costume or just any costume , tag us , because I really want to see how you guys dress up from what you do at lazy girl library .

Speaker 1

Yeah , we want to see . Yeah , well , I think

Borrows & Returns

Speaker 1

that's kind of it for Halloween topics , but let's talk about some borrows and returns and end on a note of books . Sounds good . What are you reading ? I'm surprising because I've been crushing it , but I haven't . I'm reading the same books that I did last . That's okay . Yeah , no , that is okay . They're both taking me a while . Well , how to Win and Influence People . I think that's just forever going to be on there . It's one of those you bit by bit , yeah , it's like , oh , I totally forgot I had this and then I pick it up . So kind of reading that maybe not really it's on hold . And then the Fate of the Sun King . For some reason , I'm just like kind of slow into this . I think it's because I'm not like fully into the series but like .

Speaker 1

I want to know what happens , but I'm trying to get through that book for returns . I did finish the audiobook life's too short by Abby Jimenez , so it was good little insta lovey but I liked it . I've been . I enjoy her book , so that was good . I am struggling , though , to find a new audiobook .

Speaker 1

I tried like three different ones because I didn't want to do another Abby Jimenez one , because I don't want to like blow through them super quickly . But I tried like three different ones and there was always something off . Like one of them it was uglies and because I wanted to watch or read that before I watched the movie . But then I was like , okay , this definitely was meant for me to read in middle school . So then I stopped that one . And then there was this other one that I was really intrigued by the story , but it was this girl talking in a British accent and I was like I can't listen to this . It just wasn't good . And then the other one I tried . I knew I wasn't going to like , but it's a really popular book , so I tried it anyways and I'm like halfway into it , but I'm like kind of not enjoying it .

Speaker 2

So if y'all have any audiobook recommendations , let me know because I will try them . Yeah , that's hard to try to find them .

Speaker 1

I know After you've had such good luck . Yeah , but that's what's going on in my book reading world currently . What about you ?

Speaker 2

I'm not reading a whole lot right now either . I am reading the X-Hex , which is our book talk .

Speaker 1

I'm excited to start that one .

Speaker 2

It is cute . I'm really enjoying it so far . It definitely is putting me in like Halloween spirit I don't know something about , like I'm not a huge like Christmas Hallmark person . I'm not a huge like Christmas Hallmark person , but something about like this cheesy , like Hallmarky type of movie books , shows for Halloween specifically .

Speaker 1

Just get me going you know , I completely agree really . I'm not a Hallmark gal which there's nothing wrong with people who love Hallmark but I just can't do it . But if it it's ball , that's a different story , Something about the witch .

Speaker 2

maybe it's the Disney Channel original movies growing up that just kind of trigger my brain in that way . But anything like the rom-commy , like a Hallmark cheesy romance that's Halloween themed , I live for . So this book is really scratching that itch for me and it's really putting me in the mood .

Speaker 1

I'm really excited to talk about it . So this book is really scratching that itch for me . It's really putting me in the mood .

Speaker 2

I'm really excited to talk about it . It's been really cute so far . Once I finish that , I am going to start the Harry Potter series . I talked about it last podcast . So we're starting Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone . Staying on spooky theme , we're staying within the realm of witches and wizards . I am excited to try this one . I'm going in setting my expectations more . I don't want to say low , but like knowing that this was meant , like people were reading this in like elementary school , like middle school kind of thing and I know , as the books progress , like after talking to friends , like it does like grow with you .

Speaker 2

Yeah , but at least for this first book I'm trying not to judge the series too harshly after like first two to three , because knowing like the demographic it was meant for , that's smart . So all about the expectations , trying to set realistic ones for myself , because that's how I get myself in trouble . So I'm excited to start that . Um . As far as returns , I did finish a conspiracy of kings by megan whalen turner . That is the fourth book in the queen's thief series .

Speaker 2

I gave it four stars . Um , it was really interesting because all the books leading up to this one so far have been from like one character's kind of perspective . But this one flipped to another one that you hadn't seen since the first book . Like you're introduced to him in the first book and you hadn't heard from him really since . Interesting , um , and so it was kind of interesting to hear , like from that side and how the main character kind of influences the book , even though he's not the main character of the book , um , because he's the one that really become like is like the master of the plot twists in this book . That I love um , and she just does them so well it's so well done .

Speaker 2

I still think the third book is my absolute favorite , um , but this one is so , so good . I have two left in the series . I'll probably flip-flop between harry potter and that series till I can finish it off . Yeah , um , but that was really good and then I did have , uh , agrippina , the most extraordinary woman of the roman world , by ms southland . Um , that was a one star did not finish for me .

Speaker 2

I was really disappointed , because it's not that it was written poorly . I was doing it on audio and the concept of it was really . I've been reading books lately . I know We've been having a hard time . The concept was interesting , but the author doesn't really differentiate between the different people like real people that you're listening to and it's like Roman names . So it's like roman names . So it's like this person's real name is this , but then they changed it to this once they were emperor and then they're all like same variations thereof . So it's really hard to differentiate who she's talking about , when and where . A lot of people have the same names or they're really similar , and so I was just getting so confused on who we were talking about that I just was so lost Like there's no point in me finishing this because I don't even know where we began , yikes . So that was a DNF for me , unfortunately , but maybe I'll try to find something else about her because her story does intrigue me . But yeah , that one specifically was not for me , dang , unfortunately .

Speaker 1

Well , hopefully our next returns are good yeah . Or just next audiobook experiences . Yeah , yes , because we had some good returns .
