EP #16: Understanding CBD: Your Complete Guide to Choosing the Right Products
Navigating the world of CBD products can feel overwhelming with countless options claiming to deliver relief and wellness benefits. How do you know what to choose and what's actually worth your money?
Marilisa Lawless breaks down everything you need to know about CBD products, starting with the fundamental differences between topicals and tinctures. Topicals deliver targeted relief directly to specific pain sites through roll-ons, lotions, and gels, while tinctures offer whole-body benefits through sublingual absorption. She explains why CBD's anti-inflammatory properties work so effectively for pain management without psychoactive effects.
The conversation dives deep into the crucial distinction between full spectrum and isolate products. Full spectrum contains the complete profile of beneficial hemp compounds including the legally allowed trace amount of THC (less than 0.3%) that helps activate your body's cannabinoid receptors. Meanwhile, isolate products, containing only CBD molecules, provide peace of mind for those concerned about drug testing or THC sensitivity.
Marilisa shares wisdom gained from years of experience, emphasizing the importance of proper dosing ("start slow, go low"), product quality verification through third-party testing, and matching product selection to your specific needs. Whether you're dealing with localized pain, sleep issues, anxiety, or general wellness concerns, the episode provides clear guidance on finding the right CBD solution.
The most valuable takeaway? Ask questions before purchasing. Find reputable sources who take time to understand your specific situation rather than pushing products. With the right information and quality CBD products, you might find the natural relief you've been searching for without unwanted side effects or psychoactive experiences.

Welcome to the Hemp Del Sol podcast. All health, no high. Here's your host, Mary Lisa Lawless.
Speaker 2:You've seen CBD everywhere, but do you actually know what you're putting into your body, or on it, for that matter? Today we're breaking down the differences between tinctures and topicals, full spectrum versus isolate, and how to actually choose the right product for you. So, whether you're a CBD newbie or just sick of guessing, this one's for you. Here, of course, with your hostess, with the mostess Mary Lisa Wallace. Here, of course, with your hostess, with the mostess Mary Lisa Wallace Milady, it is always such a pleasure to be in your acquaintance.
Speaker 3:Hey, jeremy, hi, can you hear me? Okay, that was a good intro. You did well and I was like trying something for myself.
Speaker 2:We're done here. We're done here. Hope you enjoyed the show. Check, please. Yeah, why don't we set the stage for listeners right, like somebody that's totally new to CBD? What's the difference between a tincture and a topical, and how do you know which one to use?
Speaker 3:Okay. So topicals are in general for specific sites that you might be having some some pain or some discomfort with, and that's why somebody would choose a topical. But the topicals are also pretty varied. Let me just pull this up. Like this particular product by pure well can't even tell you if there we go, can't tell if we can see it or not. Pure well is the company this is.
Speaker 3:I'm talking about two different companies today that I carry their products. There's three, three, not five three different companies, products that I carry veritas we've talked about in the past veritas farms, and so that's the primary one that I carry. They're based out of Colorado. The other two companies that I also carry although I did just start a third one for horses, that'll be a whole other topic A fourth one, I mean, is actually based out of Delray Beach and they carry products that Veritas doesn't carry or ones that are different. So you know I've got something called Nootropics. These are the ones you ingest. Purewell's Topicals this roll-on it's a 1,500 milligram cooling menthol full spectrum roll-on and it's a 1500 milligram cooling menthol full spectrum Roll-on. It's a topical.
Speaker 2:It puts the lotion on its skin, or else it gets it's not lotion.
Speaker 3:It actually has a different texture than lotion All topicals no, there are topical lotion.
Speaker 2:There's different types of topicals. Right, there's a lotion, there is a topical. Yeah, it's like anything that goes on the skin, on the skin correct, is a topical it could be, lotion it could be oil it could be.
Speaker 3:Yes, so, like I've got the massage oil from PureWell, I have the roll-on from PureWell. Those are the two topicals of theirs that I carry. And then I have Crystal Creek, which is based out of Tallahassee. It's actually everything is grown in Tallahassee and processed and from there Crystal Creek does a little bit of everything as well, but the products of theirs that I carry are the. The one topical that I carry is this, and it's a gel, so it is an isolate, so I'll explain the difference between the two of those. But the topicals are in general for specific sites that you want to create some relief for, and most people report relief when applied to the area that hurts them.
Speaker 2:So the roll on what's actually going on there, though I want to dig in and I know you're not a medical doctor and your knowledge of the science behind this might be somewhat limited but like what's actually going on when you have a topical CBD right, there's this distinction we've talked in the past about CBDs versus actual marijuana that has a high associated with it, where CBD does not get you high but has a lot of the healing therapeutic effects of the plant. It's like what's actually going on you put this lotion or gel or whatever it is on your skin, Like what is the CBD actually doing to?
Speaker 3:the body. Well, CBD is an anti-inflammatory.
Speaker 2:Anti-inflammatory at its core Right.
Speaker 3:So it's going to so with pain. They know that most pain is inflammation-based, so if you do something to decrease the inflammation, you feel better.
Speaker 2:Oh, makes sense.
Speaker 3:So I recommend topicals to most people that just have one specific site or another that hurt.
Speaker 2:Ah, okay, so you, just you can apply it to the actual site of infection, as opposed to if you have a more widespread issue, like a general aches and pains throughout your body, where, instead of just rubbing the topical all over every or every part of your body, you could just, you know, take a tincture, right, we'll get into it.
Speaker 3:Right, and that's the difference, that's the distinction in how I recommend them. Okay, Right, Cool Right. And because hemp marijuana and hemp again are both cannabis, but hemp is primarily a cutie and I have CBD for the doggies too. Marijuana doesn't have the CBD content that hemp does.
Speaker 2:And that's why hemp has become the main product for um cbd. They don't. They don't have like cbd?
Speaker 3:no, how, why wouldn't they have? Okay? So I use a like a diagram if you think of two pie charts then diagram what sort of?
Speaker 2:kind of, but they don't also. Well, I guess they cross over a little bit. It's an anti-mar.
Speaker 3:No, it's actually a pie. So if you take a circle of marijuana and you do this little slice out of it, that little slice is the CBD. The rest of it is THC, that's marijuana. Hemp is the same pie with a slice taken out of it. That's THC. The rest of it is CBD, so the hemp is primarily cbd, but they don't make products marijuana is primarily thc huh, they don't have products that have both of them combined they do.
Speaker 3:They've started to add to like in order for the dispensaries to call it marijuana. To call it marijuana, they have to have a high percentage of th state. Delta nine. Hemp is delta eight with the federal. The federally legal limit of delta nine is less than 0.3 percent. So it's completely different. That's why you're never going to get high on on hemp, any hemp product.
Speaker 2:You're not going to get high on your own supply if you're dealing with hemp Nope.
Speaker 3:No, definitely not.
Speaker 2:So isolate versus full spectrum? I'm in my head here thinking about tincture versus topical. Right, Topical is for a specific area and then tincture probably not so much for a specific area for the whole body Is. Isolate versus full spectrum. Another level of that same equation, or what's the difference between an isolate and full spectrum? Another level of that same equation, or like what's the difference between an isolate and full it's like this, this cross section, if you're looking at a chart.
Speaker 3:So with the topicals, one piece that I want to throw in there is that some people will prefer still an isolate, and I'll explain that in a minute but we'll prefer an isolate because of their own fears of thc. What we know worked best ideally is a full spectrum product. So the reason I only carry one cbd isolate topical is simply because people like the administration of a gel and they say it works for them.
Speaker 2:So I let like a gummy type gel no, no, no, like a, just like um the gel, the topical yeah, like a gel topical.
Speaker 3:These are topicals I'm talking about so okay um. So that's the difference between the topicals. It's most of them are full spectrum, you're not. You know every piece of research I've ever read nobody has ever tested positive, ever, from a topical, ever. There's no studies to support that you can ever, ever test positive. Even though the government says you're not allowed to even use topicals, they won't allow their employees. Even though it's federally legal. The federal employees are not allowed to use CBD or any of its byproducts.
Speaker 2:Nonsense, nonsense, I tell you.
Speaker 3:It is nonsense. Okay, so tinctures are an ingestible. It's something that you put under your tongue and hold it there for the bioavailability. It's best absorbed under the tongue and then you swallow after a minute and move on with your day or your evening.
Speaker 2:Got it and that's completely distinct from like an edible right, like a gummy that kind of thing. The texture is almost like an oil right. Most of them are in coconut oil. So if you have a coconut that kind of thing that the teacher is like a almost like an oil right, like most of them are in coconut oil.
Speaker 3:So if you have a coconut, if you're allergic to coconut some brands, you want to make sure that you're there. The what the oil is, or the carrier oil or the medium chain triglyceride, is you know one that you can handle. Some use olive oil, some use hemp oil and most use coconut oil, so it's just a carrier oil to help you absorb the CBD. So it's interesting.
Speaker 2:So when you have somebody that walks into the store and you start talking, maybe they're having some aches and pains, whatever it is, and you start this conversation with them, how do you recommend? Somebody starts, let's say you recommend a tincture for them. What's the recommended? Obviously it's going to be different for each person, but, generally speaking, what's the recommended? Dosage? The timing Is this something that you're taking every day? Is it less frequent than that? Is it consistently throughout the day? What does that look like for somebody? Is it less?
Speaker 3:frequent than that? Is it consistently throughout the day? What does that look like for somebody? Okay, let me back up to explaining the difference between the isolate versus the full spectrum. Okay, so an isolate means that everything has been removed from the product except CBD. Full spectrum means that it has everything that the plan has. It's full, got everything.
Speaker 2:Minus the THC.
Speaker 3:No, it has a trace amount of THC.
Speaker 2:Oh, but minus the full dose of it, if you will. Well, it has the federally legal amount less than 0.3%. I'm a little slow here, mary Lisa.
Speaker 3:You have to forgive me, that's okay. That's okay. So the full spectrum, you're never going to get high on it. I haven't ever had anybody that takes the products that I sell. I've never had anybody say that they've tested positive.
Speaker 3:If pulled for a drug screen for the jobs that they do and there are some people that are absolutely no way will I take it. I won't touch anything. That's a full spectrum and those are the people that will take the isolate. So I recommend to people that have, because I'll ask them do you have a CDL, a commercial driver's license? Do you work for the government? Do you work for the FAA? Do you work for specific jobs that do drug testing? Professional athletes, there are some professions that won't even allow a trace amount of THC and they are doing specific tests looking for that trace amount.
Speaker 3:Most drug tests will not ever pick up a trace amount of THC. They're looking for certain levels. So those are the people that I sell the isolate to. So when somebody comes into the store they don't know anything about it. I start asking those kinds of questions. That's what sort of makes our place a little bit different than most stores that sell CBD products. I actually take time. Sit down. I want to talk to you and find out what is it you're actually looking for. So, moving on to dosages, what I will recommend to somebody, I will ask somebody point blank, if you ever smoked marijuana. If they have a history of marijuana smoking or taking marijuana on any level, I will recommend a higher dose for them. Somebody that's never tried marijuana has no idea what THC experiences or any of that. I always start people out at a lower dose and what I say is start slow, go low.
Speaker 2:You can always take more. You can't take less after having taken more.
Speaker 3:Exactly so with the CBD most people. I would recommend a 500 milligram, 30 milliliter bottle. And that is this. This is an isolate actually, so Crystal Creek makes an isolate tincture. I have a mint and I have a regular, just a regular flavor. You know, these are all a one ounce bottle or a 30 milliliter bottle and the dosages are usually one milliliter, so there's 30 doses in each bottle. The so and what I tell people about Crystal Creek, just as a side, they do not use coconut oil, they use hemp oil.
Speaker 2:Well, that makes sense. Why wouldn't they use hemp oil?
Speaker 3:No, it tastes awful.
Speaker 2:Oh, it tastes awful. Okay, they can't make it taste good.
Speaker 3:Tell people be prepared. It's awful, it just tastes awful, but it works. So those two tinctures are an isolate. These are two other tinctures that I carry of theirs. One is a cbg and cbd. Cbg is a um, let me see if I can get that a little closer like that. Cbg is also an anti-inflammatory, so you're getting two anti-inflammatories in this one bottle. So this is where people have a lot of inflammation. It works, but it tastes awful. I've seen people's faces when they've tried it and it's kind of comical because I do warn them. So yeah, oh boy.
Speaker 3:Yeah, but most of the time you take a one milliliter dosage, Hold it under the tongue for a minute and then, depending on why you're taking it, you go about your business. So PureWell and these two CureWell and Crystal Creek both make a sleep tincture. This is for sleep. This is the actual strongest tincture that I have for sleep. It's a 50-50. It's 750 milligrams of CBD and 750 milligrams of CBN. Cbn is specifically for sleep. Again, another piece of or part of hemp that they've isolated and know that it's specifically for sleep.
Speaker 3:What a fascinating plant this is Tastes awful, awful, and I tell people it's the strongest one I have. But it tastes awful and I have told some people you know you can try it in juice and so they'll put it in juice and drink it oh look, it's a small price to pay for for a full night's sleep.
Speaker 2:So if you have problems, yes, and it works really really well for so if you have problems sleeping, yes, and it works really really well for sleep.
Speaker 3:If you have trouble sleeping, the CBN is, you know it. It works very well.
Speaker 2:So these different these different components, the CBN versus the CBD. So they basically what are they?
Speaker 3:They act on like different sub receptors of the like in the brain in terms of where they're working at Right, the receptors in the brain, the CB1 and the CB2, they're actually activated by the trace amount of THC. That is why the full spectrum product is actually the premium product or the best way, the best administration, because it's the THC that attaches to the receptors. Um, they work really well in the body, but I don't know all of the mechanisms and how things work. I just know that it's the thc that is what makes the neurotransmitter fire. That's what makes it work.
Speaker 3:Um, so, with the tinctures and the veritas farms makes tinctures, you know they, they do the the thousand milligram and the two thousand milligram and unflavored tinctures from any of the companies is the oil and cbd. That's it. There's nothing else added. With all of the products that I carry, everything is third-party tested and what that means is that I've got labs for everything that I sell. So what it says is in the bottle. I have the lab to show. This is what's in the bottle and that's one of the ways that I know that I am selling a quality product that they won't carry a product that doesn't have a certificate of analysis to go along with it.
Speaker 2:That's so important.
Speaker 3:It is.
Speaker 3:I think that most companies are doing it now, like on every batch.
Speaker 3:There are some companies that still do random testing, but I think that the government's starting to require and I and I applaud the oversight from the government that is starting to happen a little bit more in the hemp industry, because there was a lot of products that weren't really good products and you'll see they're starting to fade away. Um, but as far as the administration, the tincture is the best way to start to deal with anxiety or deal with pain or sleep or any of the other issues that are keeping your body out of balance. And again, I'm not a medical professional but I have thousands of people's anecdotal reports that come back time and time and time again to say this is awesome, you know, this is an amazing product and they buy it every month. I have some people like on, I don't have an official auto ship program, but I have people that I ship to every month and or I have people that I ship to annually. They actually buy in bulk. That's how much they appreciate the products.
Speaker 2:So I know I know you put a lot of effort and time sourcing these products. Is that and obviously there's tons of stuff out there I'd imagine that is is not good for you and is not properly sourced? But is that like from your experience, as this stuff becomes more mainstream, like you mentioned too, with the government getting more involved, is that really common practice? Now, from what you've seen and I know your store, you're a lot different than the storefront where you walk into and they're just selling CBDs. You do a lot of other things there at Hempdale, soul and Crystal's Soul and the Transformation Project, but do you find that stores that retail just CBDs that type of store are they also sourcing these things as diligently as you are, or maybe not so much?
Speaker 3:Yeah, my experience is, unless it's a dispensary, they're not really. They're not doing as much, you know. And I tell people, please don't buy from a gas station. Yeah, they have some really nasty stuff there.
Speaker 2:I've heard at the gas station stuff that'll mess you up. Yeah, they have some really nasty stuff there. I've heard at the gas station Stuff that'll mess you up.
Speaker 3:Yeah, they don't follow the guidelines. Everybody's supposed to be following the guidelines Because I have a reputation in the community and I've been in this community for almost 35 years. My name is there. I am a licensed marriage and family therapist. I have a license to protect by the things that I talk about, the things that I do, how I present myself in my office space, so it's important for me to really be diligent. You know it's a good word. You know I have integrity with what I do and I try to have integrity with everything that I say. So it's important that I and I do I do my research.
Speaker 3:My sister and I are like always looking at the what ifs and I can say that we've been having CBD products here in the store since 2018. And I would say we have experienced a 90% success rate with people that are taking the products and report a benefit Because it's a supplement. Not everybody gets it. Not everybody does do better. Nobody, I know, has ever done worse, but not everybody does better, and that's as honest as I can be you know it isn't a good success rate, for sure.
Speaker 3:Yeah, and I don't know what, what the statistic is across the world or the country. I just know from my experience here in our, in our space, from my experience here in our, in our space, um, people have reported benefits and that's why we have people that come back over and over again.
Speaker 2:Um, that's not the only reason, though. I mean. Obviously, that's important, but I think you, you don't just do this for a living, right? This is your, this is your lifestyle, right? You embody this space. So, again, there's no detachment from you going to work every day and doing what you do at work, and then your whole life. Like most people, they go to a job, they do their job and then they go home and they're a different person. This is your passion. This is what you do, yeah, which is super important, because if you have that type of passion in what you do, yeah, which is super important, because if you have that type of passion in what you do, you're going to do you know you're going to treat it with the utmost of dignity and respect and you're going to do things like you do, which is do your due diligence and sourcing your products and making sure that you're putting good stuff out there. You're not just doing it for a buck, like a lot of other businesses are out there doing their business.
Speaker 3:Correct, you know. And then the piece when you the distinction between work and home, while it's very minimal, my the differences in who I am when I'm in my home versus, you know, with friends and family versus here. The one thing that I've come to learn about myself is that when I get excited about something, I want to talk about it with everybody. Okay, and family and friends aren't always interested. So I am learning how to wait for the invitation, and that's the challenge. Everyone that comes through my door here, the doors here in our workspace, are inviting my knowledge. They're inviting me to tell them who I am and what I know and what I can recommend. But when I leave here, people aren't always interested in what I have to say, and I've had to take a look at that.
Speaker 2:Don't sell yourself short, Marilisa. We're always interested in what you have to say. Yes.
Speaker 3:Yeah, it's, interesting.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's interesting. What would you say to someone who's listening to this? That maybe they have reservations about trying CBDs because, again, it's associated and attached to marijuana and cannabis and getting high. But you know they're having real issues and they don't necessarily want to go put pills inside their body and take, you know, ibuprofen every day or, even worse, pain medicine because that stuff really messes up your mind. What do you say to somebody out there that is kind of like thinking about maybe doing it, but they're just, they just don't want to make that leap.
Speaker 3:Ask, just just ask questions. It's no different than interviewing for a therapist. Ask questions, you know, no matter what it is. You're the consumer. You have a right to know. You have a right to know what's what's being, what's out there, what's's the pro, what's the con, what do you like, what don't you like? Ask, and there's no stupid questions, you know. I think the only stupid question is the one not asked.
Speaker 2:Indeed, you hear that everyone out there. If you have questions, call Maralisa. Look at that. The number's right there staring at you from the screen 954-854-1039. She is a wealth of knowledge.
Speaker 3:Text me, just text me, call her. Yeah, I'm much better with texting calling because I'm usually running around in here if I'm not with a patient, so it's always a good idea to text me, because I'll run back and I'll check my phone. Check my phone.
Speaker 2:And not just questions and the CBDs you got. You got all sorts of goodies at the store I got. I got so funny. I've been to your office so many times now. I've been there with my wife, I've been there with my kids. I took my kids there and I find them looking at all the crystals. You know, my son told me marilisa, this is so funny. Hey, he came into the story he's looking all the crystals. He was fascinated and he goes to me. He goes like, can we go on vacation and go crystal hunting? Uh, I was like, yeah, let's do that. I don't know where we're gonna go. I have to ask marilisa absolutely arkansas.
Speaker 3:Some of the crystals that I have here come from a friend of mine who went crystal hunting in arkansas.
Speaker 2:Oh, I love it, love it yes, yeah, no, there's a friend of mine who went crystal hunting in.
Speaker 3:Arkansas. Oh, love it, love it, yeah, yeah, no, there's a lot of courts. There's a lot of different types of crystals. The one that's right behind me is tourmaline. It's a black crystal, it's. It's a very that's the one that exploded.
Speaker 2:That's the one that exploded on your neck right. I didn't have one this big on me, if you had that one, it might have imploded your head or something. But these are found in California. Beautiful stuff.
Speaker 3:You know. So I mean, there's crystals all over this country. There's rubies in North Carolina, there's, you know, you'll see ruby mines all along the way from, you know, georgia, north Carolina, south Carolina. Yeah, there's a lot to explore in this country and the crystals are really awesome because, at minimum, they make you feel good and they do no harm. So that really is how I live Do no harm, and if I I do harm, I am quick to apologize and to make amends, and that is the best that we can offer anybody on this. You know, on this journey, you know this short little piece of time that we are in, this human having this human experience.
Speaker 2:So it's, it's yes indeed it's a blink of an eye in any given moment it could feel like it's taken forever, but when all is said and done and you get to the end man, it feels like it went by so quickly. I mean, I'm sitting here at 45. I guess I'm, I'm, I'm either halfway through a good life or almost done with a really an abrupt one. So hopefully we're we're halfway through a really good, long, prosperous life.
Speaker 3:I was listening to people talk today about having to take care of that. They're I mean, they're women that are just a little bit younger than me, and they're they're talking about having to take care of aging parents. And you know how we have to get prepared for taking care of aging parents, and it occurred to me. I am the aging parent. You know that I'm on the top of that sandwich Now. You know, I'm the oldest girl in my generation. There's nobody else alive.
Speaker 2:You still feel like a child, though.
Speaker 3:Yeah, At 63.
Speaker 2:I am, you know a child at heart, always and forever.
Speaker 3:See, that's the Easter.
Speaker 2:I'm ready for easter with the hair. I even got my little easter earrings on.
Speaker 3:You know you're so festive, mary lisa, you gotta take a page from your playbook. Yeah, life is too short to not laugh and have fun absolutely, absolutely.
Speaker 2:So well, is there any any anything else you'd like to add before we wrap this up? I think we covered some good stuff.
Speaker 3:I think, at its base, figure out what works best for you by asking questions from somebody that you have a level of confidence in what it is that they say. That's what it is at the end of the day, who do you feel most connected to?
Speaker 2:that's what it is at the end of the day. Who do you feel most connected to Yep? Or, if you're listening to this and you have questions, let us know what they are. Leave them in the comments below. We will look through them.
