Speaker 1:

Welcome to the Light Up your Business podcast, the show where we dive deep into the world of small businesses. I'm your host, tammy Hershberger, and each episode will bring you inspiring stories, expert insights and practical tips to help your small business thrive. Whether you're an entrepreneur just starting out or a seasoned business owner, this podcast is your go-to source for success in the small business world. Let's get started to source for success in the small business world. Let's get started. Hello everyone, I want to welcome you back to another episode of Light Up your Business podcast. Today I want to talk about divine guidance and recognizing when God is speaking to you. I kind of want to interweave this, because I did find an article through Dave Ramsey's site and I'll kind of mention that here. In a minute I'm going to take some of his information and pass it on with you and then kind of interweave it with what I have. So in this specific episode, we want to delve into the profound topic of how to recognize divine guidance and understand when God is communicating with you, Whether it's through intuition, signs or spiritual experiences. We will explore the various ways in which individuals can discern the voice of God in their lives. This episode offers insights and practical tips for cultivating a deep connection with the divine and that to me is God and how to navigate entrepreneurship with faith and clarity. I think, as a business owner, we definitely have many tough decisions that we have to make, and it has moments where there's doubt, and there's doubt in our capabilities. Maybe we made a decision that didn't work out, or maybe a mistake, and you know, I believe everything happens for a reason and I think it teaches us something, and sometimes I think God sends us people or situations to help us learn what not to do in the future. And it's all valuable, it's all helpful information. I believe that having a spiritual foundation can help you grow your business faster, because you are in alignment with what God's will is. And as believers, we know that it isn't all about the success of just our business, but it's also about glorifying God, fulfilling his purpose, his will, through our business. But it's also about glorifying God, fulfilling his purpose, his will, through our business and then, you know, being a representation of Christ through our business as far as to our clients, to our employees, all that kind of stuff. So let's kind of just dive right into that.

Speaker 1:

So this article I found it was December 12, 2023. It was on Dave Ramsey's site and it was under the heading of trusting God. So it starts out talking about like we've all had issues, whether it's your car not starting issues at work, you know, whatever and we just we instantly have an issue and we plow into it and we think, okay, let's call my dad to fix it, let's call my friend to fix it. The boss gives you something and you have no idea what he's talking about and instead of asking for help, we just try to figure it out for ourselves. And that's not how it has to be, because we don't have to always try to solve everything by ourselves. We don't have to always try to figure things out by ourselves. We can ask God for help, and so it says in this article. Usually it's less about feeling like we have everything under control and more because we secretly fear that God doesn't. We start thinking things like well, maybe he needs my help, maybe I won't like his plan that he gives to me, maybe I can come up with a better one, and we try to almost outsmart God and the real problem at the end of the day is we don't trust him. You know, I have some experiences in my own life right now that I'm struggling and I'm struggling with trusting God. No-transcript. Whether it's in life or business, it's important to seek God's wisdom and guidance first and always incorporate your faith and his will into the decisions and the strategies and the places and the things that you're doing in your life. So it says in this article why is it so hard to trust God? It says we aren't the first ones to struggle with trusting God and we're obviously not going to be the last and I'm sure this won't be the only time in my life that I struggle.

Speaker 1:

It says let go and think about, let's go back to, like the Garden of Eden. So it's saying in here for a little history of when doubt first entered into the picture. So it says in Genesis, when Adam and Eve were in a garden minding their own business, the serpent came to them with temptation. And it says that the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals that the Lord, god, had created. And he said to the woman did God really say you must not eat from any tree in the garden? And the woman said to the serpent we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say you must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden. You must not touch it or you will die. And then the serpent tried to trick her and said you will not certainly die, for God knows that when you eat from it, your eyes will be open and you will be, like God, knowing good and evil. When the woman saw the fruit of the tree, that it was. So if you look at the entire passage as a sum, it basically is Adam and Eve took matters into their own hands.

Speaker 1:

It's what many of us do every single day. We doubt God's goodness, we doubt what God's telling us and we become overwhelmed with fear and anxiety and we try to take matters into our own hands. It's what many of us do every single day. We doubt God's goodness, we doubt what God's telling us and we become overwhelmed with fear and anxiety and we try to take matters into our own hands. So the article talks about how do you trust God? So you want to hear good news. It says we don't have to live like that. We can learn to trust God.

Speaker 1:

Think of a friend. You trust someone you would let watch your kids or share something personal with. Why do you trust them? How did you learn to trust them? Chances are, it's because one of a few things you either know them personally. You know they're dependable because they've proven it. You know they're there for you. So you look at their track record track records and you look at their past and what have they done and how have they treated you and what did they show up for you? Did they, you know, prove that you could be, you could put trust into them or that you could? You know, trust that they have your best interest at heart and in this case, with God, if I guarantee, if you look back at the times that you needed him, you struggled, you asked for help. He showed up. We just sometimes push it and prolong it because we want to do it our way. So in this article I'm going to continue on the article path for a minute before I continue with my own notes.

Speaker 1:

It says in the article how do you get to know God? How do you get this relationship built? Because religion is it's one thing, that's rules and regulations and all these specifics that a man put together. A relationship is different. A relationship with God is you are connected to him through your praying, through talking to him, through reading his word, and so one of the things on this list is it says get to know God personally. The Bible talks about how much God desires a close personal relationship with each of us. He's not a distant God up in the clouds just watching us spin out of control and trying to orchestrate these scenes of bad things to see if we do the right thing. That's not the God that we serve. He pursues us, he loves us and he wants us to know him. He wants us to spend time with him.

Speaker 1:

1 John or 1 John as some people say 416, says and so we know and rely on the love of God that he has for us. Romans 5, 8,. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this. While we were still sinners, christ died for us. I mean, I think about people I have struggles with and you know, sometimes I'm like I don't like this person. I ain't dying for them. Well, god loved you so much he died for you. We don't. We live in a natural world. God lives in a spiritual sense. He does not live in a place of just the way we are. Sometimes I don't think we even fathom what he does for us how much he loves us, because we can't understand that kind of love. We live in this world of like, get even, and people hurt me and I'm gonna hurt them back and all these things, and that is not the way our heavenly father is. First, john 3 1 says see what great love the father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of god, and that is what we are. God loves you. Do you hear me out there? God loves you and he wants to spend time with you. The more time you spend with him, the more you get to know him, and the more you get to know him, the easier it is to trust him in the times that you need him.

Speaker 1:

Number two it says remember when God's been faithful. This, to me, is huge because I think sometimes in life, when things are rough and you know the wind's blowing and the stress is happening and things are going wrong, I think we just focus too much on the current situation and we forget about all the times that you know we were struggling and God came through. Our business was struggling, it pulled through. You know, someone was sick in our family and they pulled through, or whatever it is. Relationships were falling apart and somehow they pulled through, and so you need to look back at that. So it says have you ever sat down and thought about everything in your life that you've been thankful for? If you have, then you know how powerful it can be to remind yourself of just how often God comes through for you and how many blessings there are in your life. If you haven't, you're missing out. So it says take time to remember God's faithfulness in the past. That has helped us trust him, and he'll remain faithful in the future, in the same way you build trust with a friend when they keep showing up for you time and time again. Seeing how often God works for you or works on your behalf is how I should say that it's a reminder that he will continue to do that. So take time to remember God's faithfulness.

Speaker 1:

Romans 3 through 4 says what if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God's faithfulness faithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God's faithfulness? Not at all. Again and again, god shows up and shows us and reminds us that what we do or don't do, either way, he's faithful. We can depend on him. Our God is a God who comes through for us, not every now and then, every single time. He doesn't come through for us because we deserve it or because we're good. No, he comes through for us because of who he is. Remember when God's been faithful to you before and let that build your confidence in him. We can trust God because he's faithful.

Speaker 1:

The third thing in this article is how to read about God's I'm sorry, read about how God feels about you. Have you ever done something you know was wrong and afterward you thought to yourself why in the world does God put up with me? Well, here's one thing God doesn't put up with us. No, if you look at scripture, what you'll actually find is a God who adores us, even when we fail. So often we project on the God how we feel about ourselves feelings of disappointment or failure or doubt. We let our past wounds how our dad talked to us or how a certain group of friends makes us feel or the way they treat us and we let that shape how we feel about God. We expect that God feels the same way about us. So if you see God as some kind of judgmental dictator who's looking down and waiting for you to mess up, then he'll definitely be hard to trust him. That's why you need to read and reread, and reread the Bible and what God has to say, because the Bible is God's word. He is talking directly to you. So they have a few examples here from the Bible.

Speaker 1:

Isaiah 43, 1 says do not fear, for I have redeemed you, I have summoned you by name. You are mine, since you are precious and honored in my sight and because I love you. Jeremiah 29, 11, which is my favorite scripture, says for I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future. I mean right there. He says it plain as day I am not here to harm you. I am here to help you and give you hope, give you a future. Zephaniah 3, 17 says for the Lord, your God, is living among you. He is a mighty Savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs. God loves you, he's in your corner and he wants the very best for you. When you remember how he feels about you, it becomes a lot easier to trust him and his plans for you.

Speaker 1:

And then the last part of this article, before I go into my notes, says trusting God is an act and a practice. So it says trust isn't a thought or a feeling, it's a practice. You walk out in your daily life and it's a muscle that needs to be exercised. If it's a muscle you haven't used much before, it's going to be weak and wobbly at first. That's okay. Over time it will become easier to trust in God. Just remember, the next time something goes wrong or you feel like the rug has been pulled out from under you, you have a choice. You can panic, you can try to fix everything yourself, or you can practice active trust by pausing, praying and seeking God for the resolution before you make your next move. So again, that was an article that I read through Dave Ramsey's website. They have some really good stuff on there, so I recommend that you go check that out. So now to the notes that I have.

Speaker 1:

Let's talk about inner voice. So to find that inner voice of God, the voice where God talks to you, you must set aside time to get quiet. You have to quiet your mind, listen to that still small voice. I mean the bible's clear. He has a still small voice. It says that right in the bible. It can be easy to fall into confusion when we have the external noise that influences what we think, feel or do, as well as who we think we should be or who we should talk to.

Speaker 1:

I talked to someone recently and we were talking about how we get in our heads and like we build up these stories about these situations or these people and the people in our lives or the experiences we're having, and we, you know, the devil will kind of get in there and shake it up and tell us that you know we're no good, they're no good, they don't like us, you don't like them, whatever. And it gets these things built up so large in our heads that we can't even like figure out how to get through it. And then you sit there and you try to play all these ways of how am I going to process this, how am I going to handle this? And then you know whether you have a meeting the next day or conversation with a friend or whatever, and you process these things and then you think, oh, I'm going to be ready, I'm going to be ready, I'm going to be ready, which is a form of control. And then you get there and then you realize all the things you prepared in your head or all the situations you went over. It doesn't happen at all like that and you waste your time.

Speaker 1:

And so to combat this you need to find quiet space to listen to God. You have to go, you know, kind of whether it's meditation, just quiet, calm sitting on you know, a bench, looking at the, the mountains, whatever it is for you that gets you calm and quiet, that helps you kind of discern that inner voice, the Holy Spirit. You know, if you have the Holy Spirit inside of you, he leads you and guides you. I mean, the Bible talks about I've left a helper for you and that's the Holy Spirit. So remember, it's not an audible voice, it's not going to be like me talking to you right now. It's just going to be this feeling inside of you that you just know that. You know that this is, this is not you talking. And sometimes I know it because my heart tells me one thing and my head's like I don't want to do that. And that's how I know like that's the Holy Spirit, because it's not my head telling me like just go make up or go go do this to please heart. It connects with God's word. It lines up with God's word, and I know that it's something I need to do. So, remember, when you take time to get to know someone, it's the same with this intuition of God's voice. You must learn what it feels and sounds like, because you practice and then you'll learn. That's not an outside influence, that is God talking to me, right? That's the Holy Spirit.

Speaker 1:

Some people call it gut feeling. I mean I just I have a gut feeling. I'm not supposed to do this. Well, maybe that's God telling you that that's something you shouldn't do. Maybe you shouldn't go that direction. Maybe you shouldn't buy that thing. Maybe you shouldn't yell at your friend. Maybe you shouldn't have that conversation, whatever it is, maybe you shouldn't do it. Jennifer I'm going to mess this person's name up Rasyapi. She has a quote that says, simply put, our inner voice is our inner intelligence or innate intelligence. It's like this inside. Knowing of like this is not smart. Don't do it, even though, whether your flesh wants to do it, your head wants to do it, whatever.

Speaker 1:

So when you begin to discern your inner divine guidance, you can take aligned actions following the nudges god is telling you. So, for example, if you have an employee and they're having some kind of issue and you're having an interview with them, and then you feel this nudge that the person you're interviewing or talking to you know has this issue or it's. You know, maybe let's turn this around even so. Like, let's say, you're interviewing an employee and you think, okay, well, on paper they look good, and then inside you have this nudge of like this would be a good fit, or maybe you choose between two candidates that would be a good fit for the position and you're not sure which way to go. You know, sometimes paper is one thing, but when you sit down and talk to the lord, he might tell you there's something about this person that feels off, that you don't, you don't connect with you, don't like, or there's something that kind of creeps you out about that person or whatever. Sometimes that's what that inner spirit talking to you and telling you that's this is not the person, this is not the person to work for you, this is not the person to date, whatever it is like, that is not the person to work for you. This is not the person to date. Whatever it is like, that is not the person. So what are some techniques we can use to tune into your intuition and discern divine guidance. So if you're, I have people tell me like I don't know how to do it, I can't do it, it's not working, he's not talking to me.

Speaker 1:

If you're having trouble assessing God's voice or hearing God's voice, a few techniques that I would offer to you is you know, make listening to God a priority, kind of like what that article was saying, like you've got to take time to listen to God. You can't have relationships if you don't talk to people, if you don't take time to ask how they're doing, if you don't take time to ask what's going on or to have a conversation, then the relationships get destroyed because you won't discuss stuff right. Ships get destroyed because you won't discuss stuff right. So take time to listen. We live in a culture that's always on the move and if you're going to seek guidance from the Lord, we must seek time each day to be quiet and still. Psalms 46, 10 says be still and know that I am God. Be still. It's not say run around and know I'm God, freak out, know I'm God, run crazy, know I'm God. No, it says be still.

Speaker 1:

Journaling is a good way. Writing can be a great way to process and can lead us to new insights, especially if we take a moment to write down within the thought process of what's happening or your stream of consciences. Right, god can direct our thoughts towards a certain conclusion through the words we are writing on the page. I remember one time actually this happened to me multiple times, but I've been in sermons right on Sunday morning and I'm sure the pastor's preaching a great sermon. I don't know, because I am talking to God and I'm writing. And there's been times I'm just writing and writing and writing and I don't know what the pastor's saying, but I'm writing and then I read it later and I'm like this is God talking to me about a situation. And that's some of my favorite times. Nothing against the pastor that I'm listening to, but when I can just get in with the word of God and hear what he is telling me, that is more valuable to me than anything else.

Speaker 1:

Sometimes things can come up in random moments or within conversations. So if you have a journal or a notebook or something with you, that's with you all day that you're able to write down your thoughts or you know the thing that popped up, or whatever, it can help you sometimes find insight into what you're looking into Prayer and turning to the scripture. Take time to read God's word daily. It can help direct your thoughts or lead you insights that might help draw out more clarity around a situation. Again, god's word, that is what it is. He's talking to you.

Speaker 1:

Discern between genuine spiritual guidance and personal desires or fears. It can be hard sometimes. If we know if we're deciding from our heart or intuition or if it's coming from a place of fear, I feel a good way to know and feel if it's divine guidance is that there will be a peace around your decision. God is love and decisions that are made from his place of love will result in a sense of peace and trust. They say don't make big decisions unless you have peace right. Don't buy that house unless you have peace on it. Don't, you know, quit your job or make a job change or move to another state? Or, you know, don't do big things without having peace on it, because if you don't have peace on it, I I tell you it's going to get worse after you make the decision.

Speaker 1:

Sometimes, within our business life or regular life, we stand up and we have to face our fears. We have to act from a place of courage, and courage comes from the heart, which is usually a sign we are aligned with the will of God. He'll grant us that strength to face our fears or the adversity. We must lean on him and move forward in those challenging times. You are greater than your fears. Do you hear me, people listening? You are greater than your fears. God is our refuge. Psalms 46 says an ever-present help in trouble. It says, therefore, we will not fear, though the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea though its waters. Just remember, god is our refuge and our strength. He is ever-present help in trouble.

Speaker 1:

When moving through a tough moment in your life or business, when you're faced with a tough decision to make, it can be hard to discern if something is placed in your heart by God, or is it because of a desire or a fear, or what is it. I've heard it said that there is a difference between a good thing and a God thing. If something is fleeting and it comes and goes, then it's most likely a good thing. But when God puts on your heart something, it's usually there to stay and the desire for that outcome or thing will only grow when God puts something on your heart, so kind of you know, keep that in mind, like if it sticks and it doesn't just go away, that's something you got to pay attention to. If it's something that's cool for a minute and then a few weeks later you don't care, it's not God, it's a fleeting thing, it's not important. So you need to pay attention to signs. Keep an open mind and heart to the subtle ways in which God communicates to the world around us. Trust and remain open that you'll receive the guidance you seek. Whether it's through your intuition, a sign, a conversation, a scripture, god's always speaking to us through a myriad of ways. You just have to pay attention. You know. Get your head out of the phone, get your head off the TV, get your head out of your work and start paying attention to what's going on. The Drowning man is a great story that displays how asking for guidance is only half of it. We must be open to seeing the message God sends us. So I'm going to read you this Drowning man. It says A fellow was stuck on his rooftop in a flood.

Speaker 1:

He was praying to God for help. Soon a man in a rowboat comes by and the fellow shouted to the man on the roof Jump in, I can save you. The stranded fellow shouted back no, it's okay, I'm praying to God, he's going to save me. So the rowboat goes on. Then a motorboat comes by. The fellow in the motorboat shouted out jump in, I can save you. To this the man said no thanks, I'm praying to God, he's going to save me, I have faith. So the motorboat leaves. Then a helicopter comes by and the pilot shouts down grab the rope, I will lift you to safety. So the stranded man says again no thanks, I'm praying to God and he's going to save me. I have faith. So the helicopter reluctantly flies away.

Speaker 1:

Soon the rudder rose to the rooftop and the man drowned. He went to heaven. He finally got his chance to discuss the whole situation with God, at which point he said God, I had faith in you, but you didn't save me. You let me drown. I don't understand why. And God said I sent you a rowboat, I sent you a motorboat and a helicopter. What more did you expect? Boat and a helicopter? What more did you expect?

Speaker 1:

The Bible says that God speaks to us through dreams, visions, words of knowledge or prophecies, and I also have had God speak to me through prayer as well as a compliment that goes with what the Bible is telling me or what's happening currently. And so don't be the guy in the rowboat, don't be there. Praying for help, praying for help. And God keeps sending help. And you have to realize help comes through people. God works through people, right? So you know, when Jesus was here, he worked through Jesus. But Jesus is not here on this earth anymore. He gave us the Holy Spirit as a helper, so listen to him. He gave us people. I mean, whether it's people that bring food to your home in times of need, people who bring money to you in times of need, your friends who listen to you in times of need, whether it's someone helps rebuild your home in a fire. Like those are people that God has put here. God works through us, which we also have to be willing to be open to do what God tells us. So if God tells me to sit and listen to a friend, to help someone that no one else wants to help, to continue showing up and, you know, volunteering my time at the soup kitchen or donating money to someone that needs it, he works through me, he works through you who are listening if you're willing, right. So don't be, don't be stupid. Just listen and pay attention to what's happening around you.

Speaker 1:

People, let's talk about quieting your mind and your heart for prayer. So Pastor Pete, grigg or Greg I'm not sure how to say his last name has a book that he wrote that says how to Pray. It shares the acronym PRAY, p-r-a-y as pause, rejoice, ask, yield to guide our conversation with God. So pause, that is anything that allows you to take a moment to breathe and relax. Maybe it's sitting in silence or going for a walk or writing. This pause helps remind us that God is with us in every moment. That's the quieting down you know, paying attention. Then you rejoice. This can be more difficult in times of sadness or frustration, but when we take a moment to rejoice that you connect with God in this way to express our gratitude, it can help us open to the sense that we are supported and loved.

Speaker 1:

Ask, we present our requests to God and trust he will listen. When you ask, you open yourself up to receive divine guidance. So Pastor Greg says this about asking for things in the name of Jesus. So he says praying in the name of Jesus means wanting what God wants, aligning our wills with his will, our words with his words and our personal preferences with his eternal and universal purposes. It also speaks of family's privilege. To ask in his name of Jesus is to approach the father in the company of his own dear son. And then, lastly, yield. To yield is to trust we yield that the requests we ask will be answered in divine timing. So we must embrace patience and trust in God's timing and plan for our life.

Speaker 1:

Proverbs 3, 5 through 6 says Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding In all other ways. Acknowledge him and he will make your straight, or he will straighten your past. He will straighten them Like he'll make it easier for you. He'll help you figure it out. And remember what Ramsey's article said the more time you spend with him, the more you get to know him, and the more you get to know him, the easier it is to trust him. It's like building that relationship.

Speaker 1:

So remember to surrender control and allow divine guidance to unfold organically. And it can be hard, especially when you really want a certain outcome, but control won't get us anywhere. After praying and presenting our request to God, we really do have to surrender and we have to allow things to unfold as they will. It's in God's hands. As a planner myself, it's really challenging because I do like to have it figured out. But if I do my part, well, god will do his part. And as you continue to listen to God's guidance and act on it, seeing how things unfold from there, you build trust within yourself as a person and as a business leader.

Speaker 1:

So I think it's hard for me sometimes because I, you know, I've got all these experiences in life and I have all these moments of weakness and triumph and failure and all these things. And I'm experiencing something right now where I'm it's I don't know how to explain it. It's a friendship of mine that's struggling and I watch this person and they make good decisions and they make a lot of bad decisions and then they let other people seriously influence their decisions and they're not listening to God, they're not hell. I don't even think they listen to me sometimes, and so I keep asking God what is the deal here? What's happening? And I feel like I'm supposed to help this person. So I keep asking God what is the deal here? What's happening? And I feel like I'm supposed to help this person and I just God keeps bringing it to me and I'm like I can't let it go. And then I wonder, like what can I do? And I keep hearing just, you know, kind of back off, just be there when I can pray for this person, love this person as much as I can, and then let that be and let God do his work, because what I'm doing is not working, sometimes it just makes it worse.

And so if you're in a situation like that, or you're in a situation where you don't know what to do, or you're frustrated, or you're sad and you know you don't think you're ever going to get out of the mess you're in, well, start talking to God about it, give it to God, trust God and start listening to God. And sometimes that may be you have to give up an addiction. Sometimes it may be you have to give up a job you have or a hobby that gets you into things you're not supposed to be in. Or you know, if you're in a relationship and the person's really controlling and demanding and not with God and not yoked, you know, evenly with you and you're with God, or whatever, sometimes you need to look at that and say what is this? What is this I'm doing? What is God telling me about this? Right and it's helpful to remember God's faithfulness in the past. Go back to the past and trust that he will remain faithful. God's word is true. He is who he says. He is Folks. That is all for today.
