Well, hello there and welcome back to the heal the healers show. Today I want to chat a little bit about just reflecting on this past year in this upcoming year, it seems like the landscape of medicine is rapidly changing. I mean, rapidly, and this is something we really need to take the heart and figure out what is the Lord saying in this season? What are we To do and how to prepare and how to walk steadfast with the Lord in this rapid changing landscape of medicine. So that's what we're going to talk about today. Stay tuned for after the music and we will be right back. Welcome to the Heal the Healers podcast, where we explore the intersection of faith and medicine. Discover your God given potential and experience Christ's healing in the midst of medical burnout. I'm your host, Inga Hoffman, a pediatric chemo doc, physician coach, and follower of Jesus. Together, we will navigate the challenges of medicine, integrate faith into our personal and professional lives, experience spiritual renewal, and find restoration in Christ. Welcome to the Heal the Healers, where Christ heals one physician and one patient at a time. Hello there and welcome back. Happy New Year to all of you. And I am so excited to be back with you and share some thoughts about what's going on in medicine, how we can prepare for this year. And really kind of tuning in and reflecting of how has the last year been going and where are we headed in medicine? And I want to say at the outside, I don't have all the answers, but I do have some ideas in some directions. What we can do as question physicians to equip ourselves and be really mindful in the times and seasons we live in. So for this episode I just entitled this as how question physicians can navigate the rapidly changing world. Changing landscape off medicine, and that is a really, I think, important topic because if you have been paying attention, things have been rapidly shifting medicine, and it seems like it's only picking up. And I want to really reflect on that today, but before I go in too deep I want to encourage you to number one, subscribe to the show and share it with others, whether you're watching the show on YouTube or on your favorite podcast. podcast platform. Thank you for subscribing and sharing it. And also please leave a review. This is super helpful for others to just get encouraged as well. So this is a great way to stay in touch and making sure that you'll get the latest updates, what's going on in the Heal the Healers community. But let's get started on today's episode and how Christian physicians can really navigate these rapidly changing landscapes. And you know, this was a interesting episode because a lot of times when, when I think about new content, it's not so much that I'm sitting here and planning it out each time. Sometimes there is something that is perhaps on my heart and it kind of reflect on it more strategically or it's sort of prepared like a, like a teaching lesson. This was really something that just came to me as I was in my quiet time, as I was reflecting, and I sat on it for a while, but I really want to share it here because I think it is very important for us to talk about what is going on in medicine. You know, when I started the Heal the Healers, when I got this vision about a couple of years ago, I started to have this vision for the retreat that we did last November and God willing, we will do one again this year. I'm exploring venues and dates. So stay tuned and make sure you get on my email list in order to be updated when that's going to happen. So that was the first thing, the retreat kind of came to my heart. Then it was the equipping physicians through mentorship programs to really equip physicians in their faith, integrate faith. Faith and medicine. That's why I started this channel and this podcast. I started a mentorship group. I will tell you more about that in the end, because it is opening up for enrollment and just a few weeks. And I think it will really serve you to be in a community of like minded Christian physicians, to encourage each other and grow in your faith. And really address questions that are quite unique to us in a physician community that is full of faith and trying to do the Lord's will. So you learn more about that later, over the last couple of years, I embarked on this journey to. Equip others because I felt like a physician journey in medicine can be very lonely or if you're, if you're a faith based Christian physician, and when I started this, even a year ago, I had no idea how much would evolve in a short amount of time. I had an inkling and I saw. Sort of foreshadowing of some things that were happening and certainly at the back end of COVID we've all experienced many, many challenges in medicine. I mean, that is really no secret. When COVID hit, we suddenly realized how broken our system really was. I think it was quite broken beforehand and COVID revealed many things. Of the broken ends and pieces in the medical system. And that created more problems. And that is only one part. But you thought sort of, okay, the dust will kind of settle after this is all said and done. And people were talking, remember to go back to normal. And then people accepted that. There will be sort of a new normal for us in medicine as well as in society, I guess. But what's really happening, I think, is yes, there is a new normal, but there are rising problems. And what I've observed is more uncovering of problems, quite frankly, quite difficult things. Not just sort of systematic problems in terms of workflow and health insurance and all those kind of things. But really issues that are affecting every stream of medicine and every aspect of medicine. So I have been quite, um, impressed is the wrong word. I've been quite unsettled about it. Sometimes I'm like, wow, what is going on? And so I want to give you a few examples, what happened over the last year, not to go deeper into. What happened to you and that's probably all deserving another discussion and even a careful evaluation because the truth is when shaky things happen in medicine or when things fall apart somewhere where there is maybe an uncovering of of sin of problems of corruption of downfall of whatever it might be. We all have to remember, this is really important, and I have to remind myself of this all the time, that we never really know the full story. And that's why we need the Lord. And sometimes it's also not our business to know the full story, but be on alert that something is happening. So I just want to give you a couple of examples, sort of what materialized even just over this past year. So. We have had obviously health insurance issues. There are no secret people have been talking about that for years. It becomes increasingly more apparent. And of course, there was this tragic loss of the CEO of one of the healthcare medical insurance companies. And to be honest, People had lots of opinions about this, and I tried to stay out of those things and really not get into the clatter in my mind about taking sides. I think again, it is very important that we are careful and discerning where we enter discussion and make assumptions or predictions or any sort. But I do think Whatever is happening, we should ask the question, why is the Lord allowing these things? And what can I learn from the Lord in this situation, how I shall act and how I should act? Perceive things, how I should walk in wisdom and how I should stay honorable and not getting tracked down in conspiracies, anger, frustration so we can continue to kind of walk steadfast in faith. Meanwhile, being very appreciative and acknowledging, The despair we see continue to be the light. I know that was sort of a mouthful and I'm myself processing all of this. So I just want to basically bring it up for conversation and discussion and into our minds. So, um, healthcare CEO medical insurance company CEO got assassinated, a horrible death. And That is 1 thing that people got really agitated about. And then leaders stepping down left and right. And I remember sensing that there was a lot happening in the medical world, including institutions. I've been part of, and that I sense that there will be downfalls coming and I was shocked to see the uncovering of fraudulent scientific data, et cetera. Manuscripts and publications and ultimately the stepping down of a leader of a major cancer center and we see this happening more and more and oftentimes I feel like every time I open whatever X or read the something else. I'm like, wow, what's going on now? There are more and more failed therapies. There are many sort of blockbuster therapies. We put our trust in and suddenly we realize, you know, they don't really work that well. There is certainly an avalanche of biological therapies people get really excited about and some of them like, wow, it costs a lot of money and how effective will they really be in the long run. And again, I'm not here to dissect out papers and point fingers. I just want to point out that they were systematic problems where there is a lot of uncertainty in medicine. And one thing that really personally kind of touched me, there were a few therapies I was involved in as a pediatric transplant doc. Having been at some major centers not being a PI on any of those. I want to be very clear, but being the treating physician on service for some of the gene therapy protocols that are now halted because again, leukemia development. So every week it seems like something is happening and the medical system is shaking. And what makes me sad, especially that breaks my heart when there's therapies that people put a lot of hopes in for very desperate patient situations. And I totally get why people go to all sorts of measures to help their patients. And my family seeks their therapies, especially to help, you know, vulnerable patient populations and pediatric patients. I totally get that. My heart always breaks when I see as a pediatric oncologist. When I see Children and families affected by terrible diseases, and you want to just help. And I'm appreciative and excited about science. But I also feel like we have trying to rapidly evolve things, and some of them don't seem so rapid by gene therapies. We worked on for decades and decades, and it has its up and downs and its challenges. But it breaks my heart. When we then later learn, Oh, another devastating outcome, another devastating side effect happened. And especially when you were part of that, not actively, but just as the treating physician on service and you got handed over the service and one of your children that you were in charge of was undergoing gene therapy for a metabolic disease or something else. And, and you said later to hear. that those children suffered a terrible side effect. And you ask yourself the question of how much is too much? Do, are we doing the right thing? Are some of those genetic therapies appropriate or not? Or should we maybe be more careful? And I know these are bigger discussions and I don't have all the answers. This is a big struggle, I would say. But what I'm observing across the board, that whether you look at academia, Or the business of medicine and the health care environment at a physician at our just how we are getting organized. All the medical societies, the whole trends you could see there is sort of the wheels falling off the wagon on every end. And whether you're in primary care or in academic medicine or anywhere in between, you can see that there was rapid changes, that the system is quite shaky not to mention the replacement of physicians by MPs and that whole tension, even though I want to say personally I've worked with amazing nurse practitioners and I think they have a lot of value to bring, but I see the tension in the field where. Quite frankly, the enemy is out to create division everywhere, and then there is a lot of shaking and downfall by things maybe we contributed, not you and me directly necessarily, but we as medical field have contributed to. So all that is to say. is Madison is broken and it is a lot more broken now than it was even a year ago. At least that's my sense, or at least a lot more comes in the open. What is broken? And that's exactly why we're here. That's exactly why initially had the vision. We need to equip physicians. We need to equip Christian physicians. To be the light, to be the hands and feet of Jesus, to do things in a righteous and orderly way and in an honorable way to walk on the fruits of the spirit, all those things that are extremely counterculture and do them well and do them in love and do them With a heart for the people and seeing God's heart for the people, which means God's heart for all the patients. God's heart for our colleagues that are nonbelievers. God's heart for everybody involved in the healthcare system. What is God really saying? And that is why we need to get equipped. That is why I'm so passionate about this. And you can probably tell that I get very excited about. Really getting us equipped and getting us as physicians serious about our faith because in hard times, people of God often stepped in. You can be provided with the answers from the Lord for systems and problems and situations where maybe nobody has an answer, but if we are not connected to the Lord, then that is a problem. And we are, we'll be just part of that system going for its downfall. If we don't put the brakes on and evaluate what needs to be done to have a holistic health care. That is that is in the end caring for all in a beautiful way that is that is loving and caring. That has the heart of Jesus yet as a profitable organization. So we can keep on going, but not a corrupt organization. I hope I make any sense, but what I'm. What I'm sensing and this is probably no surprise. Medicine is under exposure. Medicine is just shaking. Like other people talk about, you know, the earth is shaking and groaning and many ways we see so much tension and problems in all directions. Medicine is no different. And it is no surprise because the system is broken, has been broken for many years. a long time. And eventually, if you work with a broken system, eventually, the more pressure you put on, the more it starts to collapse. That's just natural. That's natural for a lot of different processes. So having said all this, what can we do? And I want to give you a few just practical tips and also just And awareness, where should we be standing? What should we be doing? Number one, and I say this all the time, you have to get in the word of God. I know we physicians are all extremely busy and it is hard to make time for God. Go back to earlier videos. I had also a whole series making time for the Lord, making time for God. We talked about quiet time, Bible reading, prayer, intercession. Taking the Sabbath or holding a day of rest in my mentorship group already on when we started. So if you join, you can get the whole series of recording and really will equip you in your walk with Jesus. But I have to tell you, you have to get in the word, you have to get started and be absolutely committed. It might take you less time than you think. So read your Bible every day, really know the word, by The word of the Lord and by your reading and studying and praying and, and asking the Lord and not by hearsay, please do not be a hearsay Christian. That's terrible because you can just pick up random stuff from people you don't even know what's true because you don't know what is written in here. So you study it. Imagine this is your medical exam and you need to take it over and over again every day. I want you to take this seriously. I know I'm like, I'm very excited about this, but I cannot tell you the biblical illiteracy. In general, it also amongst physician is really mind boggling. And you know, we are smart people. You might say, I don't have time. I am just doing a little devotional. That is not good enough. You need to read this thing cover to cover over and over again. Or whatever the Lord instructs you in terms of the order. Maybe he has you camp out in certain books, but you should be in there every day. I encourage you to memorize the word, memorize scripture. The more you read it, the more you will commit it to memory as well and get it done. 15 minutes a day. We all have that. You can get through the Bible in a year. I promise you it's not that difficult. You just need to make a commitment. Okay. Now I'm going off my. I'm going off my soapbox here, but I want to impress that on you because this is an absolute necessity. This is not optional. This is not nice to have. This is this is your lifeline. This is my lifeline. The next part is get in prayer. Get in prayer. I also did a lot of videos on this in the beginning and again in making time for God series inside the heal the healers mentorship program. If you want to join, you get access to all these past recordings. I speak very clearly about making time for prayer, how you can pray. Number one, pray to the Lord, be in conversation with the Lord. Don't just dump your request like a hit and run operation. I often say, go get in communication with the Lord, get to know him, get to know what God likes, what he dislikes, his character, everything about him. That will take time. You're building a relationship. But if we just sit there and say, quick, a bunch of prayer requests and back for a bunch of things and then leave and go about our busy day we are not going to be able to form that relationship and neither will be able to get to know the Lord. and get to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit. And that is foundational as well. So that will be our next point. Get to know the voice of the Holy Spirit. Get to know the Holy Spirit as your friend, because that's what he is. He's your advocate. He is a helper. He's your teacher. comforter instructor. He is the one that will instruct you in all things to understand the word to understand God's character because he will be real use himself to you. But again, you have to spend time with him. That also means, and I know this is not easy that we sit there and be quiet for a little bit. Prayer and time with the Lord is not just talking all the time. And I had to learn that too. And I still sometimes catch myself where I'm like, I'm talking too much. You can ask questions and then be quiet. And over time you will learn how the Lord is speaking to you and cherish that. Once you tapped into that, you cannot stop. It's like so exciting. Your life. I'm not supposed to know this, but the Lord just told me to pray for this person this way. And then you will later find out there was a real reason. It's amazing. It is life changing. So please do that. Then pray for specific guidance for medicine. So this is very important. Pray specifically what the Lord has you do in your specific role location where you're currently positioned as a physician. Amen. Perhaps he has also a regional kind of assignment or purpose for you to be there. Maybe it's not just your spot in the clinic or in the hospital or at the university, but perhaps it is a regional assignment. Speak to the Lord, or maybe even national. What does the Lord have you do? In your sphere of influence, and as you engage with him, he will trust you more. We see that in the Bible over and over, and he might give you specific assignments that are either local, regional or on a larger scale, national. And that is really important. Step in every day. Ask the Lord, What do you have me do? How do you want me to interact with these people and do that even on a patient to patient level, on a colleague to colleague level, interacting with the nurses and all the other health care workers? Be the light. Okay? So the next one is pray and intercede for renewal, revival, and a reform in medicine. I talked a lot in the beginning about how broken healthcare is. We all experience that. We see it. We know it. We feel it. It hurts us. It hurts our patients, our colleagues. Nobody benefits other than maybe a few people that load themselves with money. Another discussion. But have a heart, your heart should be breaking as a physician for your patients, for your colleagues, for the health care system, if you're called to this field. So ask the Lord to give you that fire and that burden and start interceding as your colleagues and their patients life depends on it, because it might. So do that. And that is, That is amazing because we have given power and authority on this earth to take territory for the enemy. So let's do it. Let's pray against these things that are happening and that are falling apart in the system and ask the Lord to come in and to get rid, uncover of what is evil and bring in the good into the health care system so we can extend the love and care for all people so that they know the Lord. Bye. Interacting with us. And then be on guard, be on guard. That also, again, comes through prayer, be on guard and ask the Lord. Maybe some of you, he will share with some information. This has happened to me a number of times where I felt warned by the Lord about certain things that I ought to pray for, or maybe to see his heart or Potentially bring solutions, be on guard and always listening. And that is why so important that you form a real deep personal relationship with the Lord through prayer, quiet time being in the word, knowing the voice of the Holy Spirit. And then lastly, stand for biblical truth and its values and don't associate with what is past. I know this is a fine line and a difficult walk. And that's why, again, you need to be in conversation with the Lord. Yeah. There might be times where you have to stand up and the Lord will protect you because he will protect his own. There might be times where you're just called to consecrate, to step away, to make sure you are not affiliated or associated with certain things. That is true for our personal life and walk with Jesus, right? The Bible talks a lot about how we ought to live. That is true for our personal lives, right? There are ground rules and rules of living. We follow here. They are also true for our jobs. So again, if you don't know the voice of the Lord and the voice of the Holy Spirit to direct you, you might muddle into things and get into waters. You're not supposed to. So guard yourself. That doesn't mean that we have to be judgmental or unkind. Or any of those kind of things, gossip or whatever it is. Always in this, I'm preaching to myself here. Have the heart of Jesus. Have the heart of Jesus. He know what, he knew what sin is. He called out sin and he loved the people. And he will tell you when it's time. time to call something out. Sometimes it's just time to pray and show a better example in a world that's gone completely nuts. So please be on guard and don't associate With things that are not godly that are not biblical because you and I, we have to help and account for everything we did and we said. That's very humbling. One day we have to give an account. So zip your mouth when it needs to be zipped and keep quiet. And and check your heart to make sure we walk on about in this journey. That is not easy to maneuver. We have to have the fear of the Lord. We have to have the Lord in our heart. The word should be a living thing in our lives. And that's how we can go through this. And I know that's that's sort of a lot of things. So to summarize, stay in the word, stay in prayer, really know the Lord and His character, know the voice of the Holy Spirit, pray specifically for your role and guidance in your specific situation, always pray in general for renewal and reform of medicine. And then obviously stay repentant. I didn't mention that. I forgot that line on my notes here. Stay repentant, meaning if you are like convicted of sin, I mean, I really did not handle the situation well, stay repentant, be also quick to forgive others, very important so that you don't open a foothold for the enemy. And then be alert and be on guard and stand for biblical truth. And don't associate yourself with what is true. Wrong based on biblical values. So also for some of you, you will continue to work on your job faithfully for others. The Lord might call you to a different level to be a watchman of a medicine that's what I meant of asking him for guidance over your region, even nationally to understand what is going on. So you have to be in conversation with a lot. 1 thing I do know, and that I want to kind of speak about briefly a little while ago. I had. I had this, there were a series of kind of visions and experiences. And one thing that became clear to me that while the Lord might be uncovering some things in medicine, I believe and feeling the heart of the father is. That he is very protective of those in harm's way, meaning if there is something that is truly wrong, we can trust that the Lord is just, that he is righteous, that he will handle it, he knows more than we do. And he also knows who is innocent and will make sure he guards those that are in harm's way. And that really comforted me when, when I had that kind of visual experience to feel like the Lord is protecting those that are innocent, those that are just, that are just needing help. And He is the one who is just and righteous, and we need to know His will and continue to seek His heart. to see clearly in this situation. So I want to encourage you with that, but I want you to remember that you pray, Lord, what is your will for my situation? What is your will in my life as a Christian physician? What do you want me to do? And and keep that in mind. Again, some of you, that might mean the Lord is pulling you to a different level to be a watchman, to be an intercessor, to pray. For some of you, that is just like, he needs a faithful person with all the love and care that you have in your heart to just, Be there because they need to be people boots on the ground that know what they're doing. And that can be the calm and the storm for others. There might be opportunities. Maybe the Lord's gonna give you to speak up about something. Maybe he's given you a position of influence to say, I'm gonna position you over here so you can work for my glory. For others. You might be given solutions to problems that you're facing, either locally or larger problems, whether that's a medical problem or a kind of a workflow problem or strategic problem, whatever it might be, quality insurance, anything that is important again, that we know the voice of the Lord and listen to him. And one thing that came to me. If you would just look back and you would say, if I had all the knowledge and really knew the voice of the Lord, how would have 2020, if I could do that all over again, look like, right? Maybe there would be maybe there would be some different decisions you have made, or maybe Maybe you would have walked through this journey differently. I don't know. It's just helpful to understand that the Lord's walking by our side, but we have to be very close to him to get to know him and to know his will for our jobs for the people that he entrusted us to care for. And then most importantly, in the end, we need not, we need to know the Lord, we need to know his word, we need to pray, et cetera. And we can ask him to really give us wisdom and revelation in this situation. And, and getting us understanding from his word or through, through the Holy Spirit, and really give us divine wisdom to act upon wisely and use his wisdom and discernment how we should approach every situation. And that really begins with us forming in the relationship and having the fear of the Lord. In the end, I want to say a lot of these problems that we see in medicine, they're clearly too big for one person, right? That is very obvious. A lot of these problems are so big. You don't even know where to start, where to begin and, and how to even help. But I think it is reassuring to know the Lord knows all things. None of this is coming to surprise, and I believe he's put you here to make a difference. And ask him, what difference can I make? Where is my position in this? Do you want me to act in a certain way? Or do you want me to faithfully continue with the work you put in my hands right at this moment? Okay, so I hope this, this helped you. I know this isn't a, Oh, I have all the answers for all the problems out there. That's what we need to ask the Lord for. Because I don't want to come with my human wisdom, but I want to encourage you to wherever you are in your walk of faith, whether you are very close to the Lord, to seek him even more. And if you feel like, you know what, I've been slipping off a little bit. I've, I've not taken this as seriously. I know I should get in the Word more. I know I need to make more time. You Do it now. There's not that time as the right now, this moment. Do it now. Repent, go to the Lord and say, Lord, I want you. I want you so badly and I'm struggling. Help me and then create daily disciplines to walk with the Lord on a daily basis. So I hope this served you. I did mention in the beginning, that they have some resources that are created this mentorship program for Christian physicians and the mentorship program is really there to equip you and to train you in many things I just mentioned. We talked about making time for God. We did a whole series on the Feast of Israel and its relevance for us as New Testament believers. That was just kind of a really geeky thing. To understand some of the things we're reading in the Old Testament, and we get stuck in, I found them so powerful, and I never read the Bible the same after I understood some of those things. But also looking at various things, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, how to listen to the Holy Spirit, why it is important, but a whole series on that. We're currently talking about physician identity, our identity in the Lord and our identity as physicians, the hospital. been a very interesting series with lots of wonderful discussions in the group. So I want you to join us. Don't do this walk alone. Be equipped, be in company and accountability of other Christian physicians so that you don't have to do this alone, that you will be encouraged and that you have the accountability. We have a class every monday night where I teach. And we have a discussion and some prayer. And then once a month on Thursdays, we have a time for Q and A, for coaching, for really talking through your specific situation. If you're stuck somewhere, so this is sort of more a free flow conversation versus Monday night. There is a little bit of structured teaching but then we also have Plenty of time for conversations and questions.
