Anything associated with mortality and death made the Israelites ceremonially unclean in the eyes of the Lord. One of these things that do this is if they come into contact with bodily fluids. Luckily, Jesus came as the ultimate sacrifice, the Lamb of God, in order to save us from being unclean.
Hello and welcome to the Christians on College Campuses podcast. My name is Will from the University of Oklahoma, and today we are talking about Leviticus chapter 15. Now, recently we've been looking through things that make the Israelites ceremonially unclean and what they have to do in order to become clean again. We gotta remember that God is filled with life and only life, so anything associated with mortality or death cannot be around God. This is why the Israelites had to do these sacrifices and be very careful to make sure they weren't unclean. One of the things that can make someone unclean is to come into contact with bodily fluids, which is what Leviticus 15 is all about. So let's read that. The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, give the following instructions to the people of Israel. Any man who has a bodily discharge is ceremonially unclean. This defilement is caused by his discharge. Whether the discharge continues or stops, in either case, the man is unclean. Any bed on which the man with the discharge lies and anything on which he sits will be ceremonially unclean. So if you touch the man's bed, you must wash your clothes and bathe yourself in water, and you will remain unclean until evening. If you sit where the man with the discharge has sat, you must wash your clothes and bathe yourself in water, and you will remain unclean until evening. If you touch the man with the discharge, you must wash your clothes and bathe yourself in water, and you will remain unclean until evening. If the man spits on you, you must wash your clothes and bathe yourself in water, and you will remain unclean until evening. Any saddle blanket on which the man rides will be ceremonially unclean. If you touch anything that was under the man, you will be ceremonially unclean until evening. You must wash your clothes and bathe yourself in water, and you will remain unclean until evening. If the man touches you without first rinsing his hands, you must wash your clothes and bathe yourself in water, and you will remain until evening. Any clay pot the man touches must be broken, and any wooden utensil he touches must be rinsed with water. When the man with the discharge is healed, he must count off seven days for the period of purification. Then he must wash his clothes and bathe himself in fresh water, and he will be ceremonially clean. On the eighth day he must get two turtle doves or two young pigeons and come before the Lord at the entrance of the tabernacle, and give his offerings to the priest. The priest will offer one bird for a sin offering and another for a burnt offering. Through this process the priest will purify the man before the Lord for his discharge. The same goes for anyone. If a man or woman has sexual intercourse, they must each bathe in water and remain unclean until the next evening. And when a woman has her menstrual period, she will be ceremonially unclean for seven days. Anyone that touches her during that time will be unclean until evening. And of course, you must uh bathe wash your clothes and bathe yourself in water, and you will be remain unclean until evening. So basically, if any of these things happen, the person that it starts with is unclean for seven days. Anything they touch or like come around, come in contact with, will be unclean with them. Any person that comes into contact with them or something that the person has come into contact with, they will be unclean until the evening, and everybody must wash their clothes and bathe themselves in clean water in order to be ceremonially clean again. The man or woman that the discharge or bodily fluids come out of has to do a purification offering at the end of the seven days on the eighth day in order to be clean and made right once again. But, as we've talked about before, we don't have to do that anymore because God came as the perfect sacrifice for anything we can ever do that will separate us from God. Anything that we interact with that represents mortality and death, we don't have to worry about anymore. And so Jesus, I come here now, and I thank you that you came to save us from all of these uh ceremonially clean, ceremonially unclean um sacrifices and just all this stuff. Thank you for coming to Earth so that we can just live our lives in such a way that it follows your example. And in turn, if we mess up, we are still ceremonially clean because your blood, the Lamb of God, has saved us from our sins. And in Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
