Who Dey ALL DEY!!!

SPEAKER_02

Gentlemen, happy August 19th, 2026, and welcome to the Hood All Day Podcast. I'm your host, Michael Berg, in the inland empire of Southern California, Ontario, California. But more importantly, we've got our boys with us tonight. Brian Kyle, Utah County. How are you living?

SPEAKER_00

Living great, just another day older. Uh things are great. Excited to talk some Bengals football. It's been a minute since we've been together, so excited to talk.

SPEAKER_02

Uh, rumor has it, uh, it was a special day in uh the Kyle household today. Happy birthday, brother.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you, thank you. Birthday show.

SPEAKER_01

Don't look a day over 21. Yes, Brandt, Northern Kentucky, power is back on. Talk to us.

SPEAKER_03

Lights are on, AC is kicking. Life is good, fellas. So just need Mother Nature to kind of kick you in the butt sometimes to let you know how good you have it. So uh yeah, really, really happy. Uh, was able to get the generator back going and still watch the Bengals game last Thursday. Wow, you know, had to plug in the had to plug in the TV and the antenna to go old school on it. So don't worry, I didn't miss it.

SPEAKER_02

For a TV to watch the Bengals. That is commitment to the Who Day podcast.

SPEAKER_03

There you go. Had to do the research.

SPEAKER_02

You guys are awesome. It's great to have you both back, even better, like Brant was talking about, having some live NFL Cincinnati Bengals football last week. You all know the drill. We're gonna go four downs. First down, got game balls. We did win against Detroit. Technically got the win, which was great. I did like Zach Taylor's little uh speech at the end. We might touch base on that. But second down, biggest needs that you still see for this team. I think there's a lot of improvements, but I think there's still a lot of areas of opportunity that we can see that might be some glaring holes right now. Third down, I want to talk about the 20 2026 draft class. Everybody but Taco Davis played last week. They all looked really good. Want to get your thoughts on those gentlemen, and then fourth down, Chicago Bears are in town tomorrow. We've got a joint practice, and then Saturday, game preseason game number two. What are you both looking for? So Brian kick us off. Game balls versus Detroit.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, uh, my game ball goes to one Dante Myers. Uh signed from the uh CFL. And just here's the thing, he stood out in the game against Detroit. I think he led the team or tied the team in in receiving yards, also had a 13-yard run. Uh, and then what I like the most out of him is that he I didn't because I didn't know. I had looked it up previously and hadn't seen that it was in his history of doing it, but that he returned a punt and returned it for, you know, had a decent little punt return. So he's finding ways, and he's one he's been giving, he's given opportunities, but he's finding ways to make this roster. Uh, you know, if he if he can play special teams, covering kicks, and then also be whether he's the can find his way from being the starting starting punt returner, or you know, he's that backup punt returner. I I love it. That's how you make a team, and that's how you you know get to dress on Sundays, so to speak. And the biggest thing is he got the endorsement of the chief of staff of the Bengals, uh, and one Joseph Lee Burrow. Uh, and you know what? I I love hearing stories about about that. Uh, you know, a lot of people have their opinions about athletes and prima donnas and making all this money, and and they do, they they make a great living, but what we don't always see unless people talk about it is is things like what Dante Myers did, where you know the invitation for Burrow was extended of hey, if you can get up here, uh we're gonna have a throwing session. Guy drives all night from Atlanta to be up there in the morning to be able to you know catch passes from Joe Burrow. If that, you know, obviously it resonated with Burrow, like, hey, this guy's in, this guy's committed, and now he's proven it. Like, that's the type of guy that Joe wants in his foxhole. So I love it. Good for him. I'm excited because as we go into these last two preseason games, uh guys like Myers are gonna get the double, uh, you know, get the snaps. I doubt we see the starters the rest of the preseason, and so kudos to him for making taking advantage. And I I'm rooting for the guy, I think he's got some juice to him, and so if he can help us be better and prove that fourth, fifth, sixth receiver spot, I'm all for it. So good on you. That's where my game was going, Dante Myers.

SPEAKER_02

Love that, love that for a couple of reasons. When Burrow shared that story, you're so right. Two things it's such a reminder, chief of staff, Joseph Lee Burrow. But you're so right. You reminded everybody what is important, most important to Joe Burrow. And he puts that stuff in his memory bank and goes, I can count on this guy. This guy had no reason to be here, but he drove up here to make it happen. And two, can you imagine getting that text being Dante getting the text from Joe saying, Hey, you're like our 10th or 11th receiver right now, not quite sure how to even spell your name correctly. E-Y-E-R-S, but you want to throw football tomorrow? And then he gets up there, it's awesome stuff. I love that, Brant.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, Dante Myers uh looking great. So I love that pick by Brian. And Chuck Sizzle better uh put it in gear because some people are going for his job. So still rooting for Chuck. I think he's a great returner, but but he's got some competition this year.

SPEAKER_02

He needs to lose the girlfriend though.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, I haven't seen the girlfriend, so we talk about that. Yeah, uh, I'm gonna go with Swayze Bozeman. He looks cool, mostly because of his name. Uh great name. How can I mean how can you not just, you know, want that guy on your football team just based off his name? But he had a great game, I thought. Uh, I thought he looked fast, I thought he looked physical. Uh exactly what you're looking for from the linebacker position. Uh, you know, a guy we picked up off waivers. I think we picked him up from the Giants, but he's played with Kansas City. He's played a little bit with the Bears as well, which I wasn't aware of until I kind of started looking him up a little bit more. He had three tackles, one tackle for a loss, a pass breakup. Uh, I thought just all around, we're looking as a linebacker, uh, played really well. Um, you know, I think he was wearing the green dot for that second unit, too. So I'll take it. Yeah, big. I think really big. Uh, because uh linebackers still a big question mark, guys. I I think you know, obviously when in the offseason, we were hoping they might do something in the draft, hoping they still might sign, you know, uh one of these, you know, experienced free agents. Didn't happen. Uh Oren Burks, I'm a little iffy on if he's that really that third guy that can step up into that position if one of the top two guys go down. And uh really, I think you're looking for somebody else that can wear that green dot and make some calls. Uh, you know, Shaka Hayward has shown some things in previous preseasons. Uh Joe Giles Harris as well, but I think you're looking at those two more as special teams guys. Um, you know, you need somebody else that can offer special teams, but also step in and uh play that linebacker position and not lose a beat. So I liked what I saw from Swayze Bozeman. Uh, hope he keeps it up and he might have a chance at really making this team.

SPEAKER_02

Love that. And I loved his effort. I think when you I'm gonna go and totally cheat and just give the game ball to the defense. When you take the ball away three times, you get two sacks, you're probably gonna win most games with our offense, and that's the type of production we're looking for. When you're talking about uh Bozeman like that playing linebacker, what I saw was somebody that was not scared to fill the hole, was not scared to make a tackle, was sure handed in wrapping up, wanted to be physical. Those are the things that this defense seemed to lack last year. I think we can pick out some guys that we thought weren't as physical and did not make the plays when they were presented to them. Guys are gonna make mistakes. I think there's a difference, but I thought we saw a lot of guys flying around making plays. I thought Chris Jenkins, defensive lineman, looked a ton better. Uh Mafe, Boye Mafei is gonna be, he's big boy. He is gonna be a monster on that edge. We may have gotten a sleeper edge guy on there, but I love seeing some of these other guys. Kyle Duger, like, watch out for that guy in the slot. That guy is gonna be a matchup nightmare for some of the uh the teams we play against. But I like seeing some of these guys step up and seem to be a lot more physical than what we saw last year. So excited for that. DJ Ivy out there making plays. It's gonna be a fun defense. They're gonna make mistakes from time to time, but they won't be as many mistakes physically. It'll be just the either a hey, didn't make the play, but we're gonna go be a playmaker next time. That's what I love about both of your game balls on that. So second down, Brandt. Got a one game under our belt, got another one coming to town Saturday, uh, big one, actually, tomorrow with the team scrimmage. I think that's a big deal. There'll be a lot of good footage from that. But what's your biggest need that you see coming out of that game and and what you're seeing for the team right now?

SPEAKER_03

My need's gonna be a little random, so I just want you guys to stay with me on this one. But I kind of you know, I've I we've seen this pop up, I feel like, in the last couple years, especially too on defense. But uh I was just noticing it during the game, and I I just I it really just you know it's just become annoying at this point. But uh just covering the flats or the swing pass, it just seems like we're so late to get there. And I, you know, knowing whose responsibility it really is, hard to hard to tell sometimes, you know, in the moment. But if it's from a linebacker or safety standpoint, we're just slow to react. And I felt like the Lions, especially early, I think it was, were able to move the ball pretty, pretty effectively and fast down the field, just hitting, just hitting the running back out of the backfield. And you know, he's got 10 yards before you know it, and nobody's even contacted him. So I really want to know what's going on with our uh with our coverage, specifically with linebackers and safeties. And I bring this up also because you know, like I said, it's popped up the past couple years, and I know this is adding on maybe a little bit here, but uh covering tight ends, it's gonna be huge, especially in our division. And we were the worst in the league last year in covering tight ends. I know this is only one preseason game, and Brian Cook didn't play, but we have to be better at defending the middle of the field and the check downs or the swing passes. Um, a lot of that's gonna have to do with you know getting guys on the ground and making tackles, which I think we're gonna do better this year, but um that's a that's a concern for me. So we gotta we gotta tighten that up, really hone in on our coverage, who's got the responsibility in the flats, who's covering tight ends, and and stick to them and let's be stingy as possible this year.

SPEAKER_02

You know, it was interesting. I watched the linebackers a lot more, especially the starters when they were just in there for a short period of time, night and Carter, and they seemed to react a lot faster than standing around in the last year. And so, but the Lions, like you said, overall throughout the game, still averaged five yards a carry, which is way too much. I don't care if it's preseason or not, that is way too many yards to be averaging uh against our defense. Again, Kyle Duger seemed to be knowing where the ball is. Battle seemed a little slow to react. Some of these guys, it'll be interesting to see. Cook wasn't out there. I'm interested to see when this all comes together, but you're right. Teams are taking advantage of staying away from that because now it's the strength is that defensive line up front, and they're trying to get that ball out quick. And those guys got to be out there to make a play, both in the secondary and linebackers. Brian.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm gonna go with the running back, the running back room, primarily our that third running back. Uh, you know, I talked about Myers getting the game ball because he he took advantage of the snaps and opportunity that he got and showed out. I felt like Brooks got that opportunity at running back and it and it didn't look pretty. And I feel like that is another position that has been undervalued in in the Zach Taylor area era is that third is that third running back. And it and it makes a difference. Uh you know, just just I just pulled up because it came to mind as I was thinking about this. I pulled up the box score of the Super Bowl that the uh Patriots won years ago against the Falcons, where they came back and won in overtime. Uh James White was your backup running back. I believe he was the MVP of that Super Bowl. Um or if he wasn't, he maybe should have been. Now his rushing yards, you're like, ah, six, you know, only six carries, 29 yards. Yeah, but uh James White led the Patriots in receiving, had 14 catches for 110 yards and a touchdown. Two of those carries in the running game were for touchdowns. Their third running back uh was Deion Lewis, who probably nobody knows who he is, contributed 27 yards. When's the last time the third running back on the Bengals had 27 yards or even had six carries in a game? Yet the Patriots, Belichick, make it, you know, if someone's gonna be on the roster, you might as well be useful, right? Otherwise, like we'll we'll carry another offensive lineman or D-lineman. Like, what's the point of carrying a third running back if you're not gonna let them you know cook a little bit? Uh and then Lewis had one one catch for two yards, but you know, he's contributing to the game, averaging 4.5 yards a carry, keeps Leguerra Blunt, who didn't have a very good game, but keeps him fresh. White, obviously huge in the passing game. So if we're gonna keep three running backs, which we are, then we've we've preached that on this podcast numerous times is have the best player you can find. If that's the 53rd spot on the roster or the 20th spot on the roster, it doesn't matter to me. Find the best guy for that spot. So, Brooks, you're gonna get the opportunity to earn it. Uh, but if not, I hope the Bengals aren't married to the fact that they drafted him. And if someone gets cut that would be better, then pick them up and let's let's go. And let him let that player contribute.

SPEAKER_02

You it's such a great point, and I appreciate you bringing that up. I think we fall in love with our starters. I get it. Uno and T, they're freaks, they're so different. Chase Brown, even though he's super talented, you want to protect that guy. I was thinking about that. He took a lot of hard carries early in that game, in a preseason game. I'm like, what are we doing? Pounding this guy in a preseason game. We barely do it in the regular season. But you're right. Brooks needs to step up. Look, I loved him in college. He's more of a thumper and would carry over a game. Brant, sorry. I think you remember the game was like two years ago when he had a hundred carries. All of them, I think, were in the second half, and it just kept coming at them. That was their offense back then. Same thing. If we're gonna draft these guys, why don't we draft guys that either fit our system or use them in the ways that they're capable of doing? That's a good one, Brian. I appreciate you bringing that up. Look, the easy one everybody is screaming and yelling about is a swing tackle. Orlando Brown's gonna play better. You you don't think he's not hearing all this? He will play better. He's still gonna make mistakes. Ted Karas is gonna make mistakes this year. The offensive line's not perfect. Amarius Mims will make the Pro Bowl. That guy is a monster. He is absolutely finally getting the attention he deserves at tackle. Orlando Brown will do his job and they'll they'll they'll protect that, but there does need to be a plan in place. I like the interior depth that we have on the line. It's the tackles I worry about. They're very young, very inexperienced, very raw in their skill set. That may be one, even though we may have better prospects and upside with some of these young guys, might look at a veteran that's somebody that gets cut, maybe somebody that salary cap-wise, it doesn't make sense, just as protection, because again, this team goes as Burrow goes. What concerns me with Orlando Brown is when he does make mistakes, it is always one that is very violent. And Orlando needs to be careful. You're gonna make mistakes, you're gonna get beat, but sometimes it is that JJ Watt coming around the corner and he gets a full shot at Burrow. That's the stuff we're trying to avoid. So definitely a lot of I don't want to be too negative because there's a lot of great things going on with the team, but there's definitely a lot of areas of improvement. Speaking of improvement, third down, the 2026 draft class, like we said, all of them played but Taco Davis on last week against Detroit. Brian, just want to get your thoughts on them. I think it's almost the complete opposite conversation of what we just had of those three areas. Brant talked about, you talked about, and I hit on. I think we've got some pieces in these guys that are gonna play some very critical roles.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I I I love it. And I'm on, you know, since you kind of brought it up, I'm gonna talk to two guys in particular uh who had really nice games, get you excited, and and why to me they were great picks is that's Cassius Howe. He had a nice game. He had been getting talked about during camp. You know, he what was great is while maybe he didn't have like a ton of, you know, it's not like he had a three-sack game or anything, but if you did if you were to turn on that game and you're not a Bengals fan, and you turn on that game right now and you watch, you notice 55 when he's on the field. And so, and here's what I love about the pick. Well, obviously we've talked about it, he's different from what we've had on the edge, but we we had everybody coming back, minus Trey, and we signed we had signed Boye Moffitt for the draft. Right? We had picked last year in the draft, we took a defensive end. Not a couple, you know, just a few years prior to that, we took a defensive end in the first round. The Bengals were I've I love it because a lot of teams, Bengals included, it's like, oh, we have all these guys, we can't take a defensive end, and then that, or we can't take whatever position is on the board that's the you know the best the best player on their board, and they bypass it for somebody else and it doesn't pan out, and then that guy goes and is like a pro bowler. And so I'm glad that they took the guy that they loved, that's on the board. So far, he's showing that he was worth that pick, if not a higher pick. Uh, he's probably got some teams at the end of the first round wishing that they would have taken this kid, or I think he's gonna make them feel that this season. So I love that they took it, you know, not necessarily a position to need, uh, but they took it because it's a guy that can make a difference. And then the other one is Landon Robinson. Uh, we had signed Jonathan Allen. We had trade, we had just traded for Dexter Lawrence. It's like, do we really need you know, we still have McKinley Jackson and Jenkins on the roster, BJ Hill's coming back. It's like, do we really need another defensive tackle at all? And sure, somebody's going, oh, seventh round, throw it away. Could have picked it, you know, you could have used it on a on a third running back. But they I love it. It was an area that was starting to look like an area of strength. And to me, they're adding fuel to the fire. I'm a big proponent of rather than always focusing on your weak areas and fixing those, take what is a you know, fire, uh a hot fire on your team and add gasoline to it. And those two positions, I feel they've done that with those two individuals. The other guy showed out as well. Andrews gets a touchdown, the lone touchdown. Good for him. Uh, I think he's gonna prove himself more and more in this preseason that this that the kids got some got some talent that can't be ignored, but just really wanted to point out those two guys.

unknown

I feel

SPEAKER_00

Like all these rookies right now are on track. Uh, all the draft, the draft, uh, the 2026 draftees are on track to make the team. Um, so and and we're gonna need them. We're gonna not only me need them to make the team, but be contributors.

SPEAKER_02

Congrats to Duke if uh on on this draft class and his team putting this together because it is. This is a this is a draft class where we we need it's exactly the the Taj Brooks conversation. All these guys make our team better on that. I love Cassius Howe. How many texts did we get last fall on Saturdays from Brand? I wish we draft Cassius Howe, but we'll never draft him because he's not our type of guy. He doesn't question Martin Stewart. And guess what? We got the productive guy added to the room, and it was a full room. And look at the production. Had a boss years ago that used to always say, you know, 80% of my production comes from 20% of my reps. You know, I ride those 20% reps because if I spend the one time uh all day on the loser, I'm gonna miss out on strengthening that that 20%. And that's what we're doing with these areas of need, the wide receiver room. Look at Colby Young, look at what he's doing, improving on that. We have the best receiver room already in football. We continue to get better in those areas, Brant.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I think uh I think I would just mention, I don't think Connor Lou started up playing. He practiced, but he didn't correct. I know he's been practicing, so I'm really excited to see what he brings to the to the offense. Uh, I think it was a Jacob Bear was taking most of the backup center uh reps. So he's been actually pretty decent. Um, but yeah, excited to see what Connor Lou brings. Uh you mentioned Kobe Young. I thought Kobe looked really good. Uh two catches, I think it was somewhere around 28 yards, big target. Uh seems like he's got some sure hands. Uh see uh he kind of fits more in the mold of T, right? So if T would be howled a little bit, then you know, hopefully you can kind of have Kobe step in and provide a lot of that, you know, on the edge, maybe some some quick out routes or timing routes, uh back shoulders. That's what he can provide. So I like what I saw out of Kobe Young. I think the most excited I was out uh out of everybody, and uh don't get me wrong, Landon Robinson and and uh Cassius Howe. You know, I like defense, so I was super excited, but uh Brian Parker, and I'm excited because nobody was really talking about him, and I think every nobody was really talking about him because he did his job, right? Uh and I think we're quickly gonna see Brian Parker is gonna end up being the super the super sub for offensive linemen on this team. He's gonna play every position. He's a smart St. X kid. He's dedicated, he's gonna be technically sound, maybe a little small if he has to kick out the tackle every once in a while and back up out there. And you know, maybe lacks a little bit of the athleticism that you're really looking for out there, but just the guy is gonna do what he is supposed to do, do his job, lock people up. So I love what I saw out of Brian Parker and uh specifically protecting um protecting Joe Flacco and Josh Johnson. I thought he did a heck of a job. Uh yeah, Brian hit the nail on the head though, too, with Landon Robinson. How can you not get excited about that guy? I think I saw one outlet had him graded the highest uh rookie performance out of deep defensive tackles in week one or week uh first first preseason game. So how can you not be excited about that? Like I said, I thought he he showed he knows how to play despite his lack of height, right? His leverage, uh, his speed, uh, the pass rush that he was able to get in on. Um, he really kind of caused some havoc, which is that that's what we're looking for. You know, somebody in that Gino, Geno mold that we uh became so accustomed to. And then um, yeah, Zach Endries. Just, you know, first touchdown of the year. Uh, I think you're gonna see Zach uh he Andries is gonna be the backup to uh Eric all. And hopefully Eric can stay healthy. But if anything happens, Andries gets inserted and we don't miss a beat with a lot of our 12 personnel under center under center game. So I'm really excited to see what more he brings to the offense. I think he was criminally underrated and uh dropped in the draft. So we got to steal. And uh yeah, you're exactly right. Duke did his work, and I'm excited to see him and us reap the benefits.

SPEAKER_02

I love that Jack Andrews got that touchdown because he was so outspoken saying, You got to steal in the seventh round. I'm gonna make everybody pay. Instead of just talking about it, he did it. One thing that Jonathan Allen talked about in the locker room this week is rat poison, referring to old Nick Saban's comment a lot of potential with this team. Don't care about potential. I want to see performance, I'm gonna see things happen. Brian Parker, though he might be only 6'4, 6'5, he could be a solid swing tackle. So we'll we'll talk more about that. Fourth down, get out of here quick. Bears, uh, let's see, what do we got? Saturday night. Brand, what are you looking for? What are you hoping to see?

SPEAKER_03

Who uh this one. This is my I really want to see a cleaner operation from the offense altogether. I thought, you know, if the ones do get in, they just it just looked a little discombobulated, sloppy. Uh, I think it was yesterday's practice specifically. Uh people mentioned how they just seemed a little off. I think there was a couple drops in terms of I think T. Higgins had a drop. Uh, I think Samaje had a drop. Cleaner, cleaner. What else? So just want to see a cleaner operation. Uh, and then second thing would be uh I'm really interested to see more out of this kick return game and see who really separates themselves because boys don't forget about Keyshawn Williams.

SPEAKER_02

I thought he looked really well. I thought he played great on he looked good when he was in there.

SPEAKER_03

Keyshawn had some burst. He had that one big return where I thought he had a chance to take it all the way back. Uh, so I think we got three guys that can return the ball. I think it's gonna really end up you know being what more can you do for me at the end of the day? What more can you do?

SPEAKER_02

F fifth, sixth receiver. Hey, if you flash as a returner, Charlie Jones and your girlfriend that uh you thought you were gonna be loaded with Will Levis, get her out of the locker room, get these girls away. Brian, what are you looking for?

SPEAKER_00

Uh kind of the same thing as Brent. Two two positions in particular. Uh it's that wide receiver spot, you know, spots uh four, five, and six. Uh I do think Yoshi is is kind of cemented in that third spot right now. Uh and I know there's a lot of talk about maybe Charlie being the one that needs to be like kind of watching, have his, you know, watching his back a little bit. I should think Ms. Tinsley is the guy because Charlie, Williams, and Myers can all return kicks. Tinsley can't. I think they maybe minus Charlie Jones. They all get separate a little bit more separation than Tinsley. Um, and then the other side of the ball is kind of the same thing, that fourth, fifth, and sixth corner spot. There's a lot of guys. At first, we were talking just a couple weeks ago, we were talking about Josh Newton being in the doghouse, and then the other day he has a pick in practice against Burrow coming back to life, fighting for that spot. Him, Ivy, um, you know, I think Davis is uh both Davis's are gonna make the team, so maybe it's just that fifth and sixth spot. Like Lux isn't Lux isn't giving up any root spot. There's guys fighting, and this is exactly what makes teams better. I love it. I'm excited to see who takes advantage of it. Uh, and then that four safety spot. I think you've got three who's number four, PJ Jules. Don't slip. You made it last year, you earned it. You got to earn it again. It's the NFL, bro. You got to earn it again.

SPEAKER_02

Every practice. I think that's what we're gonna see with this Thursday practice. Yes. Thing I want to see. The Niners hurt a bunch of Chargers. I don't think they did it on purpose, but they were definitely the more physical team in their joint practice today. Three, I think three guys got knocked out. I want to see us be the more physical team against the Bears. Everyone is how great the Bears were from last year. I'm not sold on them. I don't think they make the playoffs this year, just my take on that. But I want to see us be the physical team. I don't care if there's a couple fights as long as anybody doesn't get hurt. I want to see us assert our dominance on there. You guys are the best. A lot of great stuff with these teams. Brian, happy birthday. Enjoy the day. Enjoy the day.

SPEAKER_00

You got anything tonight? You know, we uh I got I got up uh I got up early this morning, got the workout in, had a little time of the self, went to lunch with with the most important person in my life, and uh so it was been a great day. Just taking it easy.

SPEAKER_02

Uh we're honored that you share the rest of your birthday with us. You both are the best. Hoodé all day.
