Mahomes and Hurts Clash in NFL Showdown
Caught in the crossfire of Super Bowl 59, I recount the tension of being a Cowboys fan forced to choose between bitter rivals: the Eagles and the Chiefs. Imagine the internal struggle as the Eagles soared to a commanding 40-22 victory, leaving me grappling with a mix of admiration and frustration. With a spotlight on Jalen Hurts' standout performance and the Eagles' ironclad defense, we unravel how the Chiefs faltered despite having Mahomes at the helm. The officiating left us with more questions than answers, particularly about how the Chiefs could have better supported their star quarterback. This episode is a candid exploration of the game's unexpected twists and the complex emotions of a fan torn between rivalries.
Shifting gears, we reflect on the NBA season's conclusion and the Super Bowl's overshadowing effect on basketball discussions. Yet, as the football season folds, the NFL offseason brims with fresh possibilities and excitement. For Cowboys enthusiasts, like myself, there's hope and anticipation for the draft and potential roster enhancements. While the sports buzz takes a temporary pause, I encourage exploring other sporting arenas until our return with more updates and analysis. This episode combines fervor and reflection, celebrating victories, acknowledging defeats, and eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the sporting calendar.
All right, welcome to Lacey's Lineup. And we have had over a week to digest this Super Bowl. And was it really a Super Bowl? To me, it ranks in one of the few Super Bowls that were fun to watch. I will explain all of that in this episode of Lacey's Breakdown of Super Bowl 59. Let's kick it off, alright, guys.
Speaker 1:Well, super Bowl has come and gone, and I will be the first one to admit that the two teams playing in this Super Bowl were probably the two worst teams that I could have ever picked. To tell you the truth, my Super Bowl shirt this year was I hope both teams lose Go Cowboys. And that's really how I felt. There was no win for me. As a Cowboy fan. You're tired of seeing Mahomes. They're the new Patriot, right? So it was oh, three-peat, like been there, done that. And then you had the Eagles, who I hate more than anybody else and I hate to see them win. So there was no win for me in that and obviously I did not like the outcome. If I had to choose one of the teams, I think I would have picked Mahomes. Get your three Pete and get the heck out of here. Now I got to hear these Eagle fans chant. They were still talking five years ago when they won the last one and now we got to hear it all over again.
Speaker 1:But let's break it down. I mean we went in with the Chiefs talking about you know, or everyone talking about the Chiefs and the rest and how they sugarcoat, which I believe that if you look back at that Texans game that they played, it was blatantly obvious that the refs were picking them to win. Nfl gets money for the Chiefs going. Nfl gets money for Taylor Swift being there, and I think it was obvious. It was the most obvious I had seen and they didn't even care. So I had full, full, I don't know faith. I guess you could say in that they were going to do the same in the Super Bowl, but it actually did the opposite, guys. I think the rest were like okay, we got them here, now we need to not call anything. And they didn't. And actually there was fouls on Mahomes that didn't get called. So we're not asking you not to do your job. Do your job. Call a fair game, call a foul if you see it. Don't call it if you don't see it, and let the best team win. Obviously we know there was a couple of hits to Mahomes, two hands to the face, that just wasn't called. I think they were scared to call it because of what had the black cloud that was over them as far as protecting the Chiefs. So I didn't like that aspect of it at all. The refs definitely did not show up. If you look at it, chiefs fans were like, oh, the refs right, they didn't call anything for us. So they really contradicted themselves. Just call a fair game, call it like you see it and don't give any advantages to either team. And the refs definitely did not do their job as far as calling a fair game, in my opinion. So we had that.
Speaker 1:Mahomes. I hate to take digs at the Cowboys because you know they're my team, but they are on the struggle bus and they need to be called out for what it was. But Chiefs fans, how does it feel to watch a game like Cowboys fans watch all year long? That's really what I felt, like I was watching. I felt like I was watching the Cowboys play. Nothing would go right. Mahomes definitely. I mean Eagles did their job as far as containing him, not letting him outside the pocket, and I've never seen him get sacked that many times Eagles dialed up a great defense. They kept the pressure on him and man did he feel it. But it was funny. If you look at the memes. It was like after the game Mahomes takes his helmet off and it was Dak Prescott and I think that's hilarious because that's how it feels. I feel like that is how Dak has played Mahomes. It just now seems human because he had this bad game. It just stinks that it was during the brightest time. Watch out. I think Mahomes is going to come back with a vengeance next year because I don't think he has even had a game like that in his career.
Speaker 1:I think the Chiefs gave up. If you look at some of the plays uh, Travis Kelsey wasn't even trying to get open to help his buddy, pat Mahomes. You had major drops by DeAndre Hopkins. Just I mean, who gets shut out in the first? They didn't even cross midfield in the first half. This was not fun for fans, not a way to end the NFL season. It was a blowout from the beginning. Yes, it ended up being 40 to 22, but they scored those points at the very end when I think everyone knew it was over. It just was not good. But I'm not taken away from the Eagles. I don't like to give Eagles any praise, but they dialed up a winning combination. I mean, we already knew that the personnel on the rosters were way better than the Chiefs. Their offensive line is stacked.
Speaker 1:If you look at Jalen Hurts all season Jalen Hurts was like falling to the ground. If anyone came near him, tell me I'm wrong, I'm not. He would literally fall and not want to get like he was, like he was playing protective. Some people think it was smart to prolong injuries, but he was not a factor. Well, he was a factor in this game. He ran for a lot of yards. He didn't slide until the very end. He did what he needed to do for the team. So I guess I got to give him credit there. I don't think the Chiefs planned for that because he hid that very well all season. So he came through big because, saquon Barkley, I understand you have to draw up to stop him, which they did. Saquon Barkley did not.
Speaker 1:If you were just tuning into the game and you saw the score, you would think Saquon had at least four touchdowns and he didn't. He didn't even break 100 yards. They contained him but they didn't factor in. I mean there were some guys that were catching the ball. You're like, who is this? I hadn't even seen this guy. Obviously, smith showed up, aj Brown showed up, ertz showed up and then obviously having a mobile quarterback in Hertz, really just they could not stop them. Defense has never been strong for the Kansas City Chiefs. Obviously they're an offensive team and it just was not working. You would think, okay, it's still 17-0. Mahomes can do this before they even talked about Brady being like, oh, he was down multiple touchdowns and came back and won and they compare him to Brady a lot. It's funny with Brady commentating the game he was probably like, yeah, he didn't break my record because he didn't get the three-peat, but it was just not fun.
Speaker 1:Fans, I think, tuned out and then you get to halftime. I'm not going to dial in too much on the halftime. I don't really understand it. It's not my music. I know I wasn't excited for the halftime show. I wasn't excited for the game. I'm still going to watch it because I'm obviously an avid football player, football fan, but it just it was meh. That's the bottom line. It was meh. I wasn't excited. I didn't even watch the ceremony afterwards, because who wants to see the Eagles celebrate, not me. So altogether it just ranks really, really low on Super Bowl. For me it's just not fun. You want it to at least be a game. You want it to be, you know, exciting. Keep the fans engaged. A lot of people had parties and you just want it to be. I mean, I think people were leaving, I think parties were ending earlier. Sunday night blues were kicking in a lot faster.
Speaker 1:Nfl for me, had been over for a while when the Cowboys went the way that they went, and then you end with Dak Prescott coming into the lineup. I mean we haven't even seen him at Cowboy Games right since his non-contact injury and he's like, oh well, we played them close and we could have easily been there and we can beat the Eagles and next year is our time. Come on, dak. You got to stop that. You don't have the personnel around you. You just hired a first time head coach. You hired not a good coaching staff which was all behind you. You made these decisions and it's going to be a mediocre year. I mean there's even been talks about Micah on the trade block. I mean that's your last piece of somebody who wants to win. And now he's even like I'm not going to sit here and watch other teams build and get better while we just stay the same, if not worse, and I agree with him, we have to make. Miles Garrett is out there. You have a lot of people that are up for free agencies.
Speaker 1:We got to fill a lot of holes that we lost. We don't know if Zach Martin's coming back, we don't know a lot of things, but we know we had holes in run game. We had holes in our offensive line, our defensive line. We only had one wide receiver I would say two. Actually I'm a big Turpin fan, but we got to get better here and it starts right now.
Speaker 1:So, jerry Jones, you got to prove something, because you're losing a lot of fan base and when you're sitting here talking about you're going to be in the Super Bowl next year, it's laughable. No one believes you. No one believes anything that you're doing and if anything, you went even worse from what you did last year and we all know how that panned out. So not seeing the Cowboys in the Super Bowl next year, I hope I'm pleasantly surprised and we at least have a winning season. But there's a lot of factors coming into it. I know I always bring Cowboys into this. Obviously they weren't a part of the Super Bowl, but with Dak's comments I just had to bring it up.
Speaker 1:So, overall, what do you guys think? I think it ranks really low. I wouldn't even put it in the top 10 of Super Bowls for anything. I don't think the refs were good. I don't think the teams were good. I mean, the Eagles definitely were the dominating force, but did they really do anything that impressive top of that? Another interception it just was bad football. Who likes to watch bad football? I've been watching it for all season. I definitely didn't want to watch it at the Super Bowl when you're supposed to be the two elite teams. That's my truth. Guys, tell me if you think that it should have been or you feel like it was a good game.
Speaker 1:Eagles fans are obviously happy. They had no worry the entire time after the first quarter, I guess you could say. Nerves probably set in at the beginning and they were worried when Saquon wasn't going, but they dialed up and, man, pray for your girl. She's going to have to sit through the Eagles at least twice this year listening to those fans talk about their Super Bowl win. Listening to those fans talk about their Super Bowl win. But let's just say I know they say we're in a 29-year drought with our Super Bowl run, but we still hold the most trophies, so I don't know if that says anything. So it's been a long time for us, but what's taken everyone so long to catch up? So we'll see how this season goes.
Speaker 1:This season, this 24-25 season, I think I'm just ready to wash it away. I didn't like it. It was a hard year as a football fan, as a Cowboy fan, it was a lot of meh. I sum it up as meh. That's just all I got to say on that. So let me know your thoughts on the Super Bowl. Tell me if you agree, disagree with anything I have to say, and I would love to hear from you and we can discuss even more about it.
Speaker 1:But halftime or halftime Super Bowl, not great. Halftime not my cup of tea and I did not watch the celebration, so I don't know what happened after that, so I'm not even going to say congratulations to you know who. But it was deserved. They did outright beat them. Mahomes definitely was humanized, I think, in this game, and that's the only thing you can take from it.
Speaker 1:But crazy, crazy game and it took me over a week to even digest on what I could talk about in this game, because there really wasn't much that happened. It was just like, really, is this how it's going to go? So, guys, let's hope this offseason heats up with some better stories and let's hope that next year gives us better football. Come on NFL. We got to stay competitive. We got to get, I mean, super Bowl week and we're sitting here talking about the Luka Doncic trade, which don't even get me started on that. It's a good thing.
Speaker 1:I don't cover basketball because I had a lot to say on that one, but it took over the Super Bowl and then Super Bowl coming back on definitely didn't help your cause for us to talk about you more. So 24-25 season is in the books and I am happy to see it go. Let's all hope, as football fans, especially Cowboy fans, that it is a much better season. I will be back to talk about offseason things the draft coming up soon and hope that we can put together a good roster so that we can compete. Until then, I hope you guys enjoy this small break, hope you find some sports that you can watch and I will be back to report on the latest news. Thanks for listening. Your girl is signing off you.
