What This Birthday Taught Me About Growth, Direction, and Trusting Yourself

Episode: Direction Over Speed — My Birthday Framework for Redesigning Your Life & Business
This episode is personal. It’s reflective. And it’s one of the most honest conversations I’ve ever recorded.
Every year around my birthday (yes—both of them 😅), I pause and ask myself deeper questions… about who I’m becoming, what this last year taught me, and who actually belongs in my next chapter.
Because I’ve learned something powerful:
Relationships—not money, not titles, not speed—are the real multiplier in life.
And direction—not hustle—is what determines your future.
So in this episode, I’m sharing the exact framework I use every year to realign my identity, my decisions, my relationships, and my path. It’s called Direction Over Speed, and it’s the tool I rely on when I need to reset, recalibrate, and build my next season with intention.
If you’ve felt like you’re moving fast but not always in the right direction…
Or if you’re outgrowing people, habits, or identities that no longer fit…
Or if you’re craving more alignment, more clarity, and more intentional growth…
This episode is going to speak directly to you.
Things I Cover in This Episode

I truly truly believe this that relationships are key and relationships are the multiplier in life. Not money, not titles, not speed, relationships. And birthdays for me have become less about the parties and adding the candles and more about the better questions. Now, instead of asking who's real and who's not, I ask who do I need to become and who belongs around that version of me? Because relationships aren't given, they are built. They are intentional and outgrowing relationships isn't betrayal, it's growth.
Welcome back to The Play Bigger Podcast and today's episode is a little different because it's going to be my birthday episode and it's in the middle of both of my birthdays. Yes, you heard that right. I have two birthdays. You'd have to go back to episode number three to hear the full story and it's not made up. I legally have two pages to my birth certificate.
And every year when my birthday comes around, I don't know about you, but I tend to pause to reflect deeper. And I reflect on primarily a couple of things. The year I just lived, what really happened this year, the growth that I had and I continued to invest in, and of course the relationships in my life and moving on to the decisions I need to make for the upcoming year. I said it a million times on this podcast, but I truly, truly, truly believe this, that relationships are key and relationships are the multiplier in life, not money, not titles, not speed, relationships. And birthdays for me have become less about the parties and adding the candles and more about the better questions.
There was a time when I judged relationships simply on who's real, who's fake. Don't get me wrong. We all have those people who we've come across and I refuse to just keep people in my life that are just not genuine relationships. And over the years I've learned something important. Most people aren't necessarily intentional about being fake. They're just in different seasons and some people are in your life for a reason. Some are for a season and some are for a lifetime. And that realization shifted everything for me. Now, instead of asking who's real and who's not, I ask who do I need to become and who belongs around that version of me? Because relationships aren't given, they are built. They are intentional and outgrowing relationships isn't betrayal, it's growth.
This is one of the hardest and most freeing lessons I have learned. And another big realization this year is that direction matters more than speed. I know how to build fast and I know sometimes I have said build fast, build fast, but you got to build fast to figure out mistakes so that you can get feedback. And I've done it for decades and I've helped so many agents grow scale and build now, but I've also learned that being just one degree or two degrees off, even when you're moving fast can take you in a whole different direction. You see speed feels productive, but direction determines something that I've paid closer attention to this year. And this year taught me that slowing down long enough to check direction has saved me from costly detours in our business, from distractions, from relationships and from what I would call, I think look like opportunities and just life. And it's also the reason why I had to say no to continuing certain commitments that were on my books. So today I want to give you something practical because you know, I love to give you guys some type of thing that you can use in your life outside of my lessons, not just my reflections, but a framework. Cause y'all know how much I love framework that you could apply to your own life and business. And I call it direction over speed. And I've built it around one simple word, which is direction. This is the same framework I personally use when I reflect, reset, and realign, especially around my birthday. And it's so cool that my birthday is at the end of the year because it gives me a fresh start. So I've also created a worksheet to go through with this episode. So if you wanna... DM me on Instagram @itsraquelq. You're more than welcome to get a free download of it. I'll tell you where to grab it at the end. And so I want to walk through it together.
The Direction Framework.
So the D stands for decide who you're becoming. Direction starts with decision and your identity. This year I stopped asking, what do I need to do next? And started asking, who do I need to become to accomplish X, Y, and Z? Because the version of you that built this season might not be the version that sustains you into the next one.
And then the I stands for invest intentionally. Every year on my birthday, I invest in growth and throughout the year actually, but I really decide on my birthday, like things I want to focus on, whether it's health, mentorship, growth, learning, energy. See, I know that growth doesn't happen accidentally. It happens intentionally. And I also know that it doesn't happen in isolation.
R stands for relationships are the multiplier. This year reminded me of how powerful certain proximity really is. And I say certain proximity because sometimes you get super close. They say you get super close to the sun and you see sunspots. And so who you're around shapes how you think, what you tolerate and what you believe is possible. See relationships are no longer about quantity, they're about alignment.
And then E stands for evaluate your perspective. I've learned that perspective determines your reality. You see the same situation can either drain you or it can develop you depending on the lens you choose. And this year more than ever, I saw how choosing the right perspective change the outcomes.
And the next one is C is care for your capacity. You know, I'm big about expanding your capacity, right? And this year made one thing undeniable, especially with all the family things we had gone through with my mother is health is not optional. You cannot scale a business. cannot scale life on exhaustion. Your body is not a machine forever. It may be temporarily, but not forever. And it's a vehicle for everything that you're building.
T is for trust your intuition. This year forced me to trust myself more than anything. There were moments when I didn't have time to research or for advice and I had to go with my gut. And what I learned this year is intuition gets sharper with experience. The more that you go through something, the more experience you have. If you're willing to listen to it.
And then I is for infrastructure for wealth and scale. This year I leaned deeper into wealth building, not just earning. I was always about how do I make more, how do I create more active income? And then opening up Bryce's LLC this year upgraded my financial team. It also was helping me teach my kids how to think of money, not necessarily do everything or tell them what we're doing for their future. Because here's the thing, and I say this in business, structure and what you're building matters and having the right people around you, the right talent will get you there quicker.
So O is the next letter and that is one degree matters. And I said this earlier is that small misalignments compound over time.
This year helped me identify the small shifts that needed to happen before they became big problems. So really think about sometimes precision and that one degree does really matter.
And N is for navigate the long game. think too often we get caught in the short game and really what matters is the long game, especially in life and in business, because there is no single playbook for life. There's no manual for raising kids for marriage. But there is also no right way, especially in today's day and age to scale a company. There's so many different models out there, but there are true principles. And when you build on those, you can scale anything.
So what I know now after more than two decades of building is this, I don't just have the experience in what has worked. have experience in what didn't work, what has failed, what works in today's market and how to get someone from point A to B without burning everything down or burning out in the process. And so you don't need to move faster. You just need to move with intention. And it's why I created the direction over speed worksheet so that you can reflect, you can decide, you can realign without the overwhelm.
And so as I close today's episode, I want to say this from my heart. The real gift today isn't my birthday. The real gift is you listening to the podcast, my friend, the fact that you chose to press play out of all the different episodes you could have listened to the fact that you're willing to reflect the fact that you're willing to invest the time to becoming better. That means more than you will ever know.
And my wish for you truly is, I hope you choose direction over speed this coming year. And I hope you give yourself permission to outgrow what no longer fits. And I hope you protect your health like the asset it is. And I hope you surround yourself with people who expand you. And I hope that you trust yourself more than you've ever have before. Because you, my friend, already have more inside of you than you think.
So I want to thank you for tuning in to another quick episode of the Play Bigger Podcast. I hope today's conversation gave you a little insight to make you just think a little bit deeper. I'm sending you all the love for the week ahead. Go after those big goals, even if it's messy.
