What if the biggest win of my weekend wasn't the business opportunity I landed... but the one I intentionally let go?
In this episode, I'm sharing a moment that completely changed how I define success as an entrepreneur. While celebrating one of the proudest milestones of my son's life, I missed out on a $3 million client opportunity—and for the first time, I didn't regret it.
That experience reminded me that building a successful business isn't enough. The real goal is creating a business that gives you the freedom to be present for the moments that matter most.
If you've ever struggled to balance ambition with the life you're trying to build, this conversation will challenge the way you think about opportunities, priorities, and success.
Things I Cover:
- Why every opportunity isn't meant for you
- The mindset shift that changed how I make business decisions
- My 4-question "Freedom Filter" before saying yes
- The biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make that steal their time
- How to build a business that supports your life—not consumes it
- Why your calendar reveals your real priorities

What if I told you one of the proudest weekends of my life came with what most entrepreneurs would call a missed opportunity? a few years ago, I would have walked away from this weekend frustrated, thinking, I can't believe I missed that client. Instead, I walked away feeling grateful because that weekend reminded me that one of the hardest parts of entrepreneurship isn't just building a business, it's knowing what deserves your attention.
What if I told you one of the proudest weekends of my life came with what most entrepreneurs would call a missed opportunity? Well, a few years ago, I would have walked away from this weekend frustrated, thinking, I can't believe I missed that client. Instead, I walked away feeling grateful because that weekend reminded me that one of the hardest parts of entrepreneurship isn't just building a business, it's knowing what deserves your attention.
Today I want to talk about building a business that actually gives you a life because a lot of entrepreneurs that I know are building very successful businesses, but they're sacrificing the very life they were hoping to create. So let's dive in. Welcome back to the Play Bigger podcast. I'm your host, Raquel Quinet, and this podcast is for entrepreneurs who want to build better so that they can play bigger in business and in life.
And every week, I take something that has happened in my life, whether it's business, AI, leadership, parenting, investing, or sports, and turn it into practical lessons that help you build a business that supports the life you actually want. Because I truly believe you do not have to do more. You just have to build better, especially in today's market. And when you build better, guess what? You create the opportunity to play bigger. And you know.
I'm all about playing bigger. And this weekend was one weekend I will never forget. I know some of you guys have watched me on social media and probably some of you guys have seen the stories, but my youngest son, Brexton, received his very first Division I basketball offer.
And as a mom, it's so hard to explain what that feels like. If you've listened to my podcast for a while, you already remember Bryce's recruiting journey, and now starting that journey all over again, only this time I'm watching the younger brother, my little one, and every journey is different, and every kid is different, and every opportunity is different, but one thing is still the same. The work just never stops. And most people celebrated getting the offer. They congratulated Braxton. They sent messages to me, to Brad, to everyone. And as his mom, I celebrated the opportunity because, believe it or not, he's a freshman going into his sophomore year. And the offer is not the finish line. It's just an invitation.
There just no guarantees and an invitation to keep improving, to keep earning it, to keep showing up every day and sitting there watching him, I started thinking, you know what? Business works exactly the same. And the reason why he's got to keep working at it is because it's only the beginning of his sophomore year. Now he's got eyes on him, his junior year. He's got eyes on him his senior year. Versus if he would have received that offer his junior or senior year, that means that there's just less time that he's got to perform in front of college coaches, in front of film, and now every gym is obviously being recorded because people want to watch how players play in a true game.
And so I think business works exactly the same. Some entrepreneurs think if I just land this client, if I just hit seven figures Raquel, or if I just get multiple six figures, if I could just build a team, then life will slow down. And believe it, I used to think the same thing but that's not how entrepreneurs work. Every new level simply raises the standard. Then something happened that made me really think, well, I was sitting in the stands, our business was still operating, one of our homes went under contract, we had investors negotiating deals, and my team was handling things back home. And somewhere during one of Brexton's game, someone had texted me about a client.
It was actually a three million dollar lead. I didn't see it because my phone was in my bag and by the time I looked at it, the opportunity was gone. years ago that would have ruined my weekend. I would have spent the rest of the tournament thinking, what if? I can't believe I missed that call.
But that's not what happened. I smiled, and because for the first time in my career, I realized something. I didn't lose that $3 million lead client opportunity. I chose a priority, and there's a huge difference. I got to thinking about that on the drive home. Why was my reaction so different? Why didn't I feel guilty? Why didn't I feel like I missed out? And I realized.
It's because over the last few years I completely changed the way I make decisions. I used to ask, will this grow my business? Now I ask, will this help me build the life that I actually want? Because you don't get time back. And let's be honest, business will always, always, always ask for more, especially when you are growing.
When you are in momentum, and there will always be another client, another opportunity, another email, another meeting, another deal. Business never says you're done enough. But life doesn't work that way. There isn't another first division one offer.
There isn't another version of that weekend in Vegas. And believe me, Brexton had probably one of the best tournaments that I've seen him play. And those moments don't come back. And I think somewhere along the way, entrepreneurs started believing that success meant saying yes to everything, more clients, more meetings, more on your calendar, more opportunities, more revenue. But what if success isn't about saying yes more often?
What if success is about getting really good at knowing what deserves your yes? And that's the shift that's happened for me. I don't make decisions based on fear of missing out anymore. I make decisions through what I call the freedom filter. Whenever a new opportunity comes my way, I ask myself four simple questions. Does this create more freedom or more work? Does this make my business less dependent on me or more dependent on me? Can this become a system?
Or is this something I'll have to keep doing forever? And finally, does this move me closer to the life I'm actually trying to build? Because if the answer is no, it doesn't matter how much money it makes, it's probably the wrong opportunity. So before we wrap up, I always want to leave you with three mistakes I see entrepreneurs make all the time. First, is they think that every opportunity belongs to them. Guess what? It doesn't.
And the best entrepreneurs aren't chasing every opportunity. They're choosing the right ones. And second, they build a business that can't function without them. If every problem still lands on your desk this week, you haven't built freedom. You've actually built dependency and probably a job. And third, they keep telling themselves, someday, Raquel, someday, someday I'll spend more time with my family. Someday I'll slow down. Someday I'll take the vacation. The problem is life isn't waiting.
Your kids aren't waiting. Your relationships aren't waiting. And someday, eventually, never comes. So my challenge for you all this week is before you say yes to your next opportunity, I want you to run it through a freedom filter and ask yourself: Does this create more freedom? Does this make my business less dependent on me? And can this become a system? And does this move me closer to the life I'm trying to build?
Then I want you to look at your calendar because your calendar tells the truth. Not your goals, not your vision board, not what you think. It's your calendar. Does it reflect the life that you are trying to build? Or is life simply happening to you? and I want to put an asterisk to this because this is a season. This could be a stage in your business. you might be in a growth phase where you know what, you don't have as much flexibility because you're in startup mode or you're restarting or you've moved companies, you've moved teams. So you're back to the hustle thing and that could be a season.
So here's the deal watching Brex receive his first division one offer was one of the most proudest moments I had as a parent. And I'm so glad I got to be there for that weekend. I also missed a dear friend of mine's baby shower and I really felt guilty.
But when Braxton received his first Division One offer, it was so awesome that I was there because years from now, I don't think what I'll remember most is the offer itself. I'll remember sitting in the stands. I'll remember hearing the excitement in his voice. I'll remember celebrating together as a family. and I'll remember being present.
And I realize that's exactly why I became an entrepreneur.
Not to build a successful business. Yes, that helps, but to build a business that gives me a life, that gives me options, that gives me flexibility. And that to me, in this stage, that's what playing bigger means to me. Building better businesses so we can live bigger lives. And if today's episode challenged you in a way that you think about success, I want you to do two things.
First, share this episode with another entrepreneur who needs to hear it.
