Every Monday felt like I was always behind. I'd wake up, I'd open up my inbox, I'd respond to text messages because they started coming in at five o'clock my time because I worked all time zone. Then I'd look at my calendar and before I knew other people had already decided what my day was going to look like. And maybe you felt that way too. Busy, productive, always moving, but somehow never feeling like you're actually leading your business.
What if I told you the most important meeting on my calendar happens before Monday ever begins? It's not a meeting with my team, it's not a client appointment, it's not a meeting with our investors, it's not even a meeting with my family. It's an hour meeting with myself because years ago I realized something that completely changed the way I operate my business wasn't chaotic because I wasn't working hard.
It was chaotic because I was reacting instead of leading and every Monday felt like I was always behind. I'd wake up, I'd open up my inbox, I'd respond to text messages because they started coming in at five o'clock my time because I worked all time zone. So the East Coast would send all these text messages and I would even miss my workout. Then I'd look at my calendar and before I knew at eight o'clock in the morning, other people had already decided what my day was going to look like.
And maybe you felt that way too. Busy, productive, always moving, but somehow never feeling like you're actually leading your business. And everything changed when I created a simple Sunday planning system that completely changed the way I run my business and honestly my life. And today I want to walk you through it step by step. So let's dive in. Welcome back to the Play Bigger podcast, I'm Raquel Quinet and if you are new here, Welcome, welcome.
This podcast is for entrepreneurs who want to build better so that they can play bigger in business and in life. And each week I share stories, frameworks, lessons, practical strategies that help you build a business that creates more opportunity, more freedom, more flexibility, and more impact because that's what we're really after.
Not just a bigger business, but bigger lives. And today's episode is one of the most practical episodes I've ever recorded because I'm literally walking you through the exact weekly system I have used for years. And I call it the Separation Sunday system. And I truly believe that if you implement this, you'll stop feeling like your week controls you and start feeling like you control your week.
So several years ago, I realized I was living my week backwards. Monday would arrive and my week had already started without me. I'd spend the first half of Monday figuring out what needed to happen. Then Tuesday, I'd finally get some momentum, and Wednesday, guess what? I'd get interrupted. Thursday felt like a catch up day. And then Friday, I started wondering where the heck did my week go?
Then Saturday, I promised myself; well, guess what, Raquel? Next week's gonna be different. Does this sound familiar? The crazy part was I wasn't lazy, I wasn't even disorganized, I was actually working really hard. The problem wasn't effort, the problem was leadership. And one Sunday afternoon, I sat down with a notebook and asked myself a simple question. What if I had built my week before my week built me? And that question changed everything.
Instead of beginning my week on Monday, I started beginning it on Sunday. And over time, those intentional Sundays created intentional Mondays, and intentional Mondays created intentional weeks, and those weeks became intentional months, and eventually it became intentional years, and it completely changed the way I operate.
You see, most entrepreneurs spend more time planning a vacation than planning the week that's responsible for creating their future. Just think about that.
We spend hours researching hotels, flights, restaurants, activities. We even create a Pinterest board or a spreadsheet, compare reviews, watch YouTube videos, and then even send up posts on our stories of what do you guys think about this? Or if you were traveling to New York, what are your best local spots? but when it comes down to our business, Monday shows up and we wing it and then we wonder why we feel overwhelmed. And here's what I've learned: your week determines your business, your week determines your income, your week determines your health, your week determines your relationship, and your week determines your stress level, believe it or not, and your week determines your confidence, and your week determines your life.
So if you want a better year, don't start by focusing on the year. Start building a better week. So I want you to win that week because great businesses aren't built one year at a time. They are built one intentional week at a time. So, lesson number one is reflect before you build. This is where almost everyone skips ahead. They immediately start writing a to-do list. I don't before I plan my week, I look backwards. Because if you never reflect, you'll keep repeating the same mistake.
So every Sunday I ask myself three questions. What were my biggest wins? Not just financially, not just personally, but with my family, with my team, and where did I make progress?
And second is what lessons did I learn? Where did I waste time? What actually frustrated me? What conversations should I have had sooner and what system broke? Y'all know that I love to talk about systems. And finally, what am I excited about the week? This one changes your energy. This is almost like what my mentor Sharon said is your review and preview week.
You review what happened the last week. You look at all the appointments and then you preview the following week. And that allows you to also close the loops, look at some of the action items from your meetings or from your calls or from your appointments, and then kind of put them into your following week.
And so instead of entering Monday with a lot of stress, you enter Monday with anticipation. See, reflection isn't about beating yourself up, it's about just getting better. And growth requires awareness. Lesson number two that I learned is build better this week. Now we build, and here's the difference. I don't build a task list, I build a life. And every week I look at six areas: business, what moves revenue, what creates leverage, personal.
How am I taking care of myself? How am I taking care of relationships? And what am I being intentional about? Who needs my attention this week? Is it family? Is it friends? Is it team members? Is it wealth? Am I investing? Am I reviewing our finances? Am I making smart decisions? And when it comes to growth, it talks about what am I learning? What book? What podcast? What mentor? What am I investing in so that I can continue to grow? And then operations is what systems need improving? Where can I make my life easier for the future? I ask myself that all the time, especially in today's day and age. And then I want to basically not manage task. I am looking to design a week. And so these are two completely different things. And lesson number three is commit to your big three. And this is also a section in my separation.
Sunday worksheet. This one changes everything. I know entrepreneurs love to do long to-do lists, 37 tasks, 50 like million sticky notes, 20 browser tabs, maybe 50. I'm guilty. And they wonder why nothing ever gets done. Believe it or not, I know that there are so many tasks because I have rebuilt our CRM with our transaction coordination, and I realized.
That our first draft of our old school checklist had a hundred and seventy e tasks for one transaction. And that was the role of a transaction coordinator. So I was like, my gosh, how many more tasks can we eliminate, especially in this day and age? And what does the client truly want and need to know during the transaction? And here's my rule every day. Three priorities, not 15, three.
If I can get those three things done, guess what? The day was a success. Because there are always lots of things to do, but really and truly, what moves the business forward? Is it revenue? Is it leadership? Is it relationships? Is it partnerships? Is it strategic thinking?
Believe me when I tell you this. It's not checking emails. It's not organizing folders. It's not reacting. It's three meaningful actions. And when everything is important, nothing is important.
And lesson number four is protect your calendar. And I know I've talked about this on previous episodes of our podcast. Is your calendar tells the truth, not your vision board, not your goals. It's your calendar. If you tell me your family comes first, I will look at your calendar. And if you tell me your health matters, I will look at your calendar. And if you tell me growing your business is a priority, I will look at your calendar because your calendar doesn't lie.
One of the biggest shifts I made was time blocking. CEO time, content time, deep work time, family time, workout time, thinking time. It's all important to me. And if it's important, it deserves a place on your calendar. Otherwise, something else will take that place. And people ask me all the time, Raquel, how the heck do you juggle so many different businesses?
And the answer isn't juggling, it's actually protecting. Protect what matters first. Everyone else fits around it. And lesson number five is execute with intention. Here's a goal. Monday is not a planning day. Monday is execution day. And the decisions have already been made. And you have already decided what matters. You already protected your calendar. You already have chosen your priorities for the week. And that's why I love to plan for the week.
And now your job is simply to lead. You remove decision fatigue, you remove chaos, you remove constant reacting, and suddenly,
Monday feels more calm. It's more focused. It's more purposeful. And guess what? That is leadership. So I want to give you the play bigger principle. Win the week. People ask me all the time how you build multiple companies. And I'll tell you one week at a time, one intentional decision at a time, one calendar at a time, and one Sunday at a time. That's it. So three
Mistakes I see entrepreneurs make is the first mistake is planning on Monday. You already lost valuable momentum, believe it or not. And the second mistake is confusing activity with priorities. Being busy doesn't automatically mean you're building. Sometimes busy is just another form of distraction. And the third mistake I see is never reflecting. You're moving so fast, you never stop long enough to improve.
And guess what? Growth doesn't happen while you're running. It happens when you pause, when you look back, when you adjust. And you then can move forward differently. And so here's my challenge for you because you know I love to give you a challenge. This Sunday, I want you to block off an hour, just an hour. Turn your phone off, close your laptop, grab a notebook.
I don't even care if you are outside or at a coffee shop, just one hour, wherever you can stay focused or download my planner. It'll tell you all the things from reflecting to building your week to choosing your three big priorities to protecting your calendar. Then show up on Monday ready to execute.
Create the Monday. And guess what? When you download this worksheet, I'll put it in the show notes. Is I want you, especially in the world of AI, after you handwrite things, because there's just things that you can just handwrite and you can just upload it, upload it into your free AI tool. And then ask them, where am I missing some of the spots in my calendar?
That needs to be there as appointments based on this worksheet. So I want to make it real easy for you. I've actually created the planner that I use every single Sunday. It's called the Separation Sunday Planner. It's completely free. it will be in the show notes or you can DM me the word Sunday at @itsraquelq on Instagram and I will get it to you. I want you to print it, use it every week, share it with the spouse, share it with your leadership teams, share it with your kids if they're old enough, because this just isn't a business tool, it's a life tool and it changes your week. So I would love to hear your wins. I would love to hear your stories. I would love to hear how you have used this because I truly believe extraordinary businesses, really, really good, amazing businesses, aren't built during the busiest moments of the week. They're built during the quiet moments before your week begins. And when you slow down, you reflect, you think, you plan, you lead. And I've learned over the years I don't need another productivity hack.
I just need a better operating system. And that's exactly what Separation Sunday has become for me. It's my weekly reset, my weekly commitment, my weekly reminder that I'm building a business to support my life, not compete with it. Because at the end of the day, you don't build better years, you build better weeks. And when you build better weeks, you build a better life. I want to thank you for hanging out with me on another quick episode. And if you've enjoyed this episode, make sure you subscribe or hit the follow button, leave a review, and share it with another entrepreneur who needs to hear it.
