Step into a time machine as Mike and Tom transport you back to 1978 – a year when disco ruled the airwaves, rock was evolving, and both hosts were navigating their youth at ages 11 and 15. This nostalgic deep dive isn't just about the music; it's about how these songs became the soundtrack to their formative years.

The duo meticulously walks through Billboard's Top 40 hits from 1978, sparking memories and playful debates along the way. From the Bee Gees' disco dominance with "Stayin' Alive" to Queen's "Fat Bottom Girls" (which Mike still enthusiastically sings at work), each song unlocks personal stories that bring the era vividly to life. Their journey spans multiple genres – rock anthems from Van Halen's groundbreaking debut album, disco classics that defined nightlife, outlaw country from Waylon and Willie, and everything in between.

What makes this episode particularly engaging is how Mike and Tom connect the music to broader cultural touchpoints of the era. Remember Steve Martin's "King Tut" on Saturday Night Live? The debut of the Millennium Falcon toy from Star Wars? Or cruising around in a 1974 Monte Carlo nicknamed after that famous spacecraft? These authentic, lived experiences transform a simple countdown into a rich cultural exploration.

Between thunderstorm interruptions and a brief but chaotic takeover by recurring characters Pippin and Squeak, the episode captures the hosts' trademark tangential style. They close on a thoughtful note, expressing condolences to those affected by the Camp Mystic tragedy in Texas, showing the heart behind their humor.

Whether you lived through 1978 or simply appreciate great music and entertaining storytelling, this episode offers both laughs and a deeper appreciation for a pivotal year in popular culture. Listen now on any major podcast platform or at mtaltpod.com.

Podcast Introduction

Speaker 2

Ah yes, welcome back to the MT Alternative Podcast, the audio equivalent of shag carpet, oddly comforting, slightly itchy and hopelessly stuck in the 1970s. This week, mike and Tom are cracking open the year 1978, a time when music was glittery, movies were loud and television was, well, mostly beige. Get ready for deep philosophical takes like was Three's Company actually a government experiment? And how many BGs does it take to define an era Spoiler? All of them, every single gib. They'll cover it all, from the high notes of rock to the low-budget sci-fi flicks, with just enough snark to make your Walkman blush. And, of course, if you're thinking, wow, I need more of this chaos in my life, you can listen to the MT Alternative Podcast on Deepcast FM, deezer FM, buzzsprout, iheart, amazon, spotify or the glorious temple of retro rambling, the mtaltpodcom website website.

No, well, you never know, there were a lot of drugs back then. We just don't know if we were there or not. Okay, I understand. Yeah, well, but it's not getting to the point. Did you like the segment so far? So far? Yeah, the music and everything. Okay. Okay, but I know there's a butt coming up. Yeah, a butt. Here we go. I think I'd rather have Troy and Travis display the 78 music instead of them two dumbasses.

Well, do you hear them sometimes? Yeah, I hear them all the time we're here. Exactly, we hear them all the damn time. Well, some of that shit he says is stupid. Well, they don't see it that way.

Speaker 1

See, that's it Blind stupidity. They don't see the smart things in life. They're giving us this opportunity. Squeak, let's not freaking. Piss them off, damn. We are a non-profit organization. Yeah, but we make no profit. Yeah, we haven't made a profit yet. I wonder why? Well, probably because them two are still in the show. You think that's what it is? Well, they talk up all the time. I don't even get to be what I need to be. Yeah, but Scree I need to be. Yeah, but Squeak, I've seen you being yourself and it's not good. It's not good for anybody. That's why you live where you live, away from everybody. No, that's not why. Oh, okay, why is it? Well, because that's what I bought a house Away from everybody. Well, listen, I read an article. We went over this. Yes, some people don't remember or may not have heard it.

Speaker 1

Well, half the accidents happen 12 miles from where you live. So I moved way out away from there. We went over this too and I told you that's not what it means. Well, I'm just not taking any chances. Okay, all right, squeak. And I met a good friend, who the possum? We've talked about this. You still got that damn thing. Yeah, he eats ticks. Do you eat ticks? No, you don't dine with them. I dine with them, but I don't eat what he eats. You know who else might eat ticks? Who, my little buddies, the Keebler elves, shit, I bet they eat more than that. They do eat a lot. They're little chunky dudes. Yeah, they probably eat the crap out of my bunghole. No, that was not nice. No, but it's accurate, not nice, that's what we're talking about. Well, thank you that means I did my job.

Speaker 1

Certainly not the fudge cookie. Yeah, well, again. I did see something funny the other day About when the little guys were running away from something Bigfoot yeah, that was hilarious, yeah, but Bigfoot didn't catch him. Well, he's got another chance.

No, it tasted like a fudge cookie. Oh, did it Nasty? That's the wrong end. You're eating from the wrong end. You're eating from the wrong end again. See, who's supposed to be steering this damn ship? I think that's supposed to. Oops, what happened? Well, I fell off. Yeah, captain, captain, my ass, aye, aye, captain, okay, so moving on. Hey, wait a minute. Okay, so moving on. That's why I got new underwear on, that's why my boys are happy.

Speaker 2

Oh, that's amazing.

Speaker 1

But that's not what I'm talking about, bud. Oh oh, your attitude. Oh yes, thank you for noticing how my attitude has changed. Pretty shitty, I think you've gotten worse. Okay, well, thank you, it means it's working. I would hate to change and not nobody notice. That would be awful. Well, shit, I don't think you're changing the right way, bud. Oh Well, it doesn't matter.

Speaker 2

Speaker 4

Yeah, kind of like a squirrel. Yeah, I guess so.

Speaker 5

He invites them in. Yeah, how the hell did he find the squirrel?

Speaker 4

Probably the same way he found the possum.

Speaker 5

Oh, there we go. We got some background thunder.

Okay, tmi, anyway, yeah, exactly, it was kind of like when I cried during yeah, it's not every day you put a dog in a tree and bash his brains out, but anyway, let's make it a children's show and call it good. Anyway, back to the music. Joe Walsh, life's Been Good, oh, excellent. I enjoyed that song because it was a lot of fun, because you could think about at 11 years old man, if I had a Maserati I'd do 185.

Speaker 4

All right, so the very first car I ever wanted was a monte carlo, because that was the coolest car in town.

Speaker 4

I understand that and I ended up with a 76 Monte Carlo when I first moved out here. But anyway, another story for another time. But this 74 Monte Carlo was white with a black hard top and he called it the Millennium Falcon. Well, that's when the big toy came out for Star Wars in 1978. Okay, was the big Millennium Falcon toy, but that's what shattered. We rode around in that car Listening to Stones.

But uh, pretty much I think that'll wrap up. Yeah, that's Before this storm cuts us off again. It sounded pretty brutal out there, but uh, one thing Tom and I want to bring up, though, is the Camp Mystic tragedy and anybody in Texas that was affected by this tragedy.

Speaker 4

Yeah, we'd like to take a few minutes to express our sympathy to all the people involved in Hunt Texas and along the river, and not just the camp but everybody involved exactly Texas as a whole.

You know everybody.

Speaker 4

I mean that's what America is supposed to be.

Speaker 4

We gotta stay strong you have to do your research, people, and just understand what you're talking about and know what's going on. But yeah, we would like to take a minute and just we're sorry that everything happened Exactly and we're keeping those families in our prayers and condolences to everyone.

Speaker 5

Yep and thanks to all the rescuers and people still out searching, you know, looking for loved ones.

Speaker 2

Later. And that wraps up another episode of the MT Alternative Podcast, proving once again that giving Mike and Tom a microphone is both a blessing and a public service hazard. Next week the guys dive into the music of 1979, a year packed with hits, misses and whatever else their half-baked research uncovers. And of course, you know, mike and Tom can't stay on topic, so expect the usual detours into strange tales, questionable wisdom and stories you didn't ask for but can't stop listening to. Thank God there was a thunderstorm to shut the power off and end this episode early, because otherwise we'd still be here three hours from now. Here's hoping for another storm next week when they get rolling on 79. Until then, I'm Daniel signing off before this whole thing spirals even further.

Speaker 3

With us down this dusty road. Tom and Mike laid it down, the story ending cold. We had our last without the virus glow. Now it's time to pack it up and hit the road.

Speaker 2

Join Mike and Tom next week for more punishment MT.

Speaker 3

Alternative's just getting started. Don't remain mad. Mt Alternative Podcast ride or die Till next week. We'll rock you sky high.
