You know that moment when a new sound hits and your brain says, “Wait, why hasn’t this existed forever?” That was us discovering country metal. We stumbled into Cody Parks and The Dirty South and found a blend that keeps country’s storytelling soul while borrowing the horsepower of 80s and 90s metal. Think big hooks, bigger riffs, and lyrics that still smell like dirt roads and late nights.

We walk through how this band built a lane—starting with sharp, respectful covers and mashups before landing fully original tracks that feel road-ready. Thunder Cash turns Folsom Prison into a roaring hybrid without losing its backbone, while songs like Seven Old Wind, The Other Side, and Water in the Well show range, dynamics, and real songwriting chops. Along the way, we get into production choices, live show energy, and why genre-bending works when it honors the core of both worlds. If you love Def Leppard sheen and Cash grit, this setlist will live on your dashboard.

Between riffs, we keep one eye on the playoffs—home field hype, defense debates, and the eternal question: can a bruised QB bounce back by Sunday? We also open the voicemail bag for chaotic feedback, a “mostly legal” ad read that probably violates something, and a programming tease about a side show we may or may not be ready for. It’s a loud, loose ride with enough track recommendations to send you down a rabbit hole.

Hit play to hear why country metal might be your next obsession. If you discover a favorite track, tell us which one and why. Subscribe, share the episode with a friend who needs new music, and drop a quick review—your notes steer what we dig up next.

New Year, New Logo, New Vibe

SPEAKER_02

What the hell's up, bud? Not too much, Mike. What is going on? Not a hell of a lot. Not a hell of a lot. Why are you thinking about a new song? Yeah, I love that new song, man. Man. Yeah, moving on up. A little bit. Yeah, love that.

SPEAKER_03

All right.

SPEAKER_02

So, uh, new logo, new song. Yeah, new year. New year. This is awesome. This is awesome. Yeah. New news and just all kinds of stuff going on.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, speaking of all kinds of stuff going on, we lost another presenter, Tom. Rupert H.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, Rupert left us.

SPEAKER_03

Rupert has left the building. Yeah, I wish you luck. I think that's the last time we use these little English guys.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they're a little proper and they they get offended very easily.

Playoff Talk And Home Field Hopes

SPEAKER_03

We'll talk about that later in the podcast. Yeah. We are on, what is it, January 17th. Yes. We get our football games this weekend. We're still in it. Of course, you're still in it. You didn't even have to play last week. You didn't either.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah, last week. Yeah, I forgot.

SPEAKER_03

Come on now, Tom. You had the first seed. You just sat there. Sorry. Not a problem.

SPEAKER_02

Get so uh everybody's picking against them. They they they gotta lose them right.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, they they think that's kind of back and forth because you can't count out Josh.

SPEAKER_02

Well, their offense is pretty high powered. However, and it's ranked number four.

SPEAKER_03

You guys got a good defense, too. It's ranked number four.

SPEAKER_02

So we're gonna see that's it couldn't be more perfect that uh yeah. The only thing I really am glad about is we're at home. Right. Yeah, you do have that home field advantage. That's about the only thing we've got going for us right now. Hey, that's a big, that's a big crowd, the crowd, exactly unbelievably helpful at Denver. Uh the altitude, you know, it's hard on all the other players that aren't used to it. And then you have, you know, I I just believe our defense is going to step up and hopefully that Captain Bill game. I I'm hoping that we can get a running game established early. That way we can use the play action and hit our guys down the field because we do have some great young receivers right now that that we're not utilizing enough, I don't believe. But our defense is outside.

SPEAKER_03

You guys had a couple weeks to prepare.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we did.

SPEAKER_03

One week to prepare for who you were playing.

SPEAKER_02

In my opinion, one of the best coaches that we've had in years since Mr. Reeves left us. Right.

SPEAKER_03

Well, on the other hand, get my Pats playing tomorrow, the three o'clock game against uh Houston, Texas. Right. Their offense I'm not so worried about. That defense scares me. Yeah.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Crap. Last week I think they scored two touchdowns themselves.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, just yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Drake May had a little pickup there in the first quarter. I mean uh first half. And uh but he played uh pretty much, I think already went seven for eleven or something in the same 140-something yards. Right like that in the second half. But uh looked good. Patience defense looked ferocious. Yeah, poor Justin Herbert.

SPEAKER_02

Got his ass beat. Oh man. A poor guy. Yeah, so did uh so did Buffalo's quarterback. They he got beat up.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, but Josh Allen could give a beating too. Yeah. And he's hitting you, you'll know it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he's a big guy. He that's my only hope. I I hope that he got beat up enough. Right. He's hurting today. But yeah, by this time, when you all hear this, this game will have been played and it'll have been over, but we'll we'll here's here's my hope. You have hope? Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's when you put on.

Defense, Quarterbacks, And Predictions

SPEAKER_02

I'm hoping that you and I enter into the championship game. That would be cool.

SPEAKER_03

That would be that way.

SPEAKER_02

That would be cool. And kudos to the winner of that one because the two best are all the all the way through the season, pretty much. Right. So I that would be cool.

SPEAKER_03

Yep, we'll see. Anyways, let's move on to uh a little music segment. Music. We've both been getting into this band. So Dirty South band. Yeah, Cody. Listen, Mike, I Well, here's the weird thing, Tom. I'm always on YouTube, you know that. Always out in the porch watching music, and I always have the short set come up, and it's like band sounds cool. Too stupid or to have the attention span enough to actually look up the band, just move on to the next video.

SPEAKER_02

Right, right, just like I.

SPEAKER_03

I said, Do you ever you know this band that does this and that? You just looked at me like, uh what? A couple days later and it pops up on my phone. Is this the band you're talking about?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, this was cool because I mean, holy crap, it's exactly like us. Oh, it's right up my alley. You mean too.

SPEAKER_03

Combined country and metal areas.

SPEAKER_02

It is so much.

SPEAKER_03

And I know the fans that have done kind of goes through that.

SPEAKER_02

Cody Parks and Dirty South. You gotta look them up. Yeah, different level.

SPEAKER_03

But uh, we'll get into a discussion about them a little later, too. Yep. Uh we got a couple voicemails that I want to read after. Hey, you'll think these are hysterical. And uh, let's see, what else are we gonna discuss after this? Cody Parks, uh, we're discussing. Oh, we've gotta have the voice mails. Yeah, this is gonna be a new thing for us. Uh uh unfortunately, unfortunately, I did not record the voicemail, so I will read them.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Next time there's still some voicemails left, I'm sure we'll get more. I will actually record them and we can listen to them.

SPEAKER_02

And we do appreciate all the people calling in. Most of them.

SPEAKER_03

So, anyways, anywho? Let's start off. Let's go back to Cody.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, yes. Yeah, look these guys up, they are awesome.

SPEAKER_03

I just took a that's all I listened to last night.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they're all the songs. I I had them in all day yesterday at work.

SPEAKER_03

All right, but here's a bio on Cody Parks and the Dirty South band. It's uh a rising act blending country and heavy rock in a style they call country metal. Stick to that. All right, Cody Parks and the Dirty South are a Nashville-based band known for fusing Southern Country roots with the thunder of 1980s and 1990s metal to create a unique country metal sound. The group was formed in 2019 by singer songwriter Cody Parks, who built the band around his vision of mixing authentic country storytelling with hard-hitting rock and metal image. And he did. Musical style and influence, as we already pretty much could tell. But uh, rather than following the typical Nashville country mold, Cody Parks and the Dirty South described their music as Def Leopard on Cornbread.

SPEAKER_02

Snort me all that cornbread there, boys.

SPEAKER_03

A blend of Southern twang and stadium-sized rock production. The sound draws heavy inspiration from the metal and hard rock acts like Motley Crue, Rap Pantera, and Def Leopard. Back to the 80s. Comics, anything. I would yeah. Yeah, I believe they will be coming this year to uh Concord. Concord, North Carolina, yeah. That'd be interesting.

Discovering A Country Metal Band

SPEAKER_02

Maybe. Maybe. Research. Yeah. So anyway, um I as I was listening to this band, I yeah, uh everybody knows Johnny Cash and what a person he was, right? Songwriter, singer. And you just don't disrespect his music. And and what I thought was weird was a few years back, I made a big deal about this idol American Idol singer turning Johnny Cash's song into a it was Country Night, and this guy turned it into a rock song, and man, it was really stood out. But let me tell you these these guys took Folsom Prison and manched it up at zombies, white zombies.

SPEAKER_03

It was so and renamed it Thunder Cash. Oh, it was so freaking awesome. But it is a great mashup, Tom. You're right.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I can't even explain. And Mike is the metal guy in this room, and I'm the country guy, and now finally we have found this music that just both of us love. Exactly. And and the lyrics and the music and everything. You gotta look at it.

SPEAKER_03

There's a lot of stuff that I listen to, Tom does like, don't. Oh, right. I I do all jobs. Right. He grew up, you know, in the 80s too in the middle of the year. Yeah, that's just my mystery. I'm rocking the metal type. Right. But and I do like some country signs, all the country. Right.

SPEAKER_02

Me too. Me too.

SPEAKER_03

But uh yeah, combining these two genres together, man. And I know it's probably not new, but it's new to us.

SPEAKER_02

It is new to us, and you know, these guys started with say do you know, like a couple years, two, three years ago when they bought it.

SPEAKER_03

Well, let's get a little uh on the history of the growth. Okay. It's gonna repeat a little, but formation Cody Park started the band in 2019 with the goal of bringing his hybrid digital life with like-minded musicians. Right. Right through releases, uh, 2023 Smothered and Covered. A set of covers with a distinctive twist. Saw singles chart as high as number two and number seven on iTunes, helping building online buzz and growing fan bands.

SPEAKER_02

I think it's weird that they smothered and covered. That's one of my favorite things at the omelet house, almond shop. You're talking about the Waffle House again. Yeah, the Waffle House. Yeah, I keep saying omelet. I don't know where you can. I mean it's just well, I like an omelet, but anyway, the Waffle House has uh their hash browns. You can get them smothered and covered and blown up. So that's where they come from. Yeah, the southern, yeah, so.

SPEAKER_03

Well, Cody Fox is originally from Georgia. Exactly. So let's see, uh, original music in 2024. They released Country Metal Volume 1, a collection of original tracks that further define their sounds and broaden their reach. Right. Live shows and touring. The band is known for high-energy live performances, which we saw a couple on YouTube. Exactly. Bringing heavy riffs and southern rock swagger stages across the US. It's 2025 and beyond, they've been performing at various festivals and venues, building a reputation as a standout pack for fans who enjoy loud genre blending music. Yes.

SPEAKER_02

I think I'm going to actually check into ticket prices and and specific dates are anything. Right, right.

SPEAKER_03

But uh I there's I'm sure I know that right now they're playing a lot of bike festivals too. Right. Yeah, for the summer.

Who Are Cody Parks And The Dirty South

SPEAKER_02

But these guys are somebody to look out for because uh they are mixing uh you know, some people say, Oh, well, anybody can put all that together with somebody that's a cover band. I'd like to see you try.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Oh, it's like I'm watching this. Oh, no, but you're not. It's a cover band. Right. Anyone can do that. Oh, I shouldn't say that because it's hard.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's hard to cover a band that's good and do it justice.

SPEAKER_03

I shouldn't say that because I don't want to make fun of musicians. Musicianship is not easy. Right, no, it's a lot. But hey, I appreciate cover bands myself because some of these bands you won't see or you can't afford to see them, or they don't come around you. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly.

SPEAKER_03

So to make fun of this band doing their thing, screw that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, these guys are really good. Please look them up once.

SPEAKER_03

Here we go at C the band base and impact. Uh the genre bending approach uh bending approach has resonated with a growing audience, including strong Spotify listenership and social media engagement, thanks in part to their aggressive yet catchy take on country music. In summary, Cody Fox and the Dirty South band are pushing the edges of country music by infusing it with hard rock and metal influences. Since forming in 2019, they've carved out a niche with their country metal sound, gaining momentum and well-received releases of energetic live shows. And we'll go over the playlist uh quickly. But I want to stop right here for a little commercial break. Oh, yeah, we have the AR sponsors.

SPEAKER_00

Hey, Carl here. From calls slightly used, mostly legal outlet. You need stuff, I got stuff. Couches, TVs, tools. Some of it even works every day. Mention NT alternative, get 10% off, probably. No receipts, no refunds. Don't ask where it came from. Calls. It's cheaper if you don't think about it.

SPEAKER_01

Carl.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, slightly used, mostly legal outlet. How the hell did we have him for an advertiser? Well, you had to go do so. Yeah, I guess so. Anyways. Uh before we uh drip back into go into the pimping screen, they I guess they got some announcement of it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they're trying. Whatever.

SPEAKER_03

I'm just gonna give a little quick bio on Cody Park. I I've heard things I wanted to Okay, let's see who this guy is. Alright. He was born and raised in rural Georgia. Right. He parks grew up averse in 70s and 80s metal via his father, alongside 90s country, and southern rock. Okay. He initially played drums in rock metal bands before shifting the songwriting with a country beat. The band formed in 2019 around his vision earning descriptions like Death Buppet on Cornbread, which we said. Right. All right, this part impressed me. Education and athletics. Parks attended Georgia Tech as a walk-on college football player. I think he was a kicker, walk-on. Right. Uh then he uh transferred to Birmingham Southern College for two seasons. He holds multiple degrees, including from Georgia Tech, and has completed has competed in cross-country events. Wow. Yeah, that's pretty impressive, man. Yeah. Oh, dumb freaking musicians.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they're all greasy, don't work.

SPEAKER_03

Well, more musicians are that way, though. Look at the guy, Dexter Holland or whatever from Ospring. Right. PhD in biology or whatever the hell he is, a chemist or something. But anyways.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

People are through it. I figured I'd read that in. Uh then we're gonna let the little dudes come in right now. Yeah. Some big announcement. Yeah. Hopefully they didn't uh open up that can we told them not to, but we'll see. Uh oh. Yeah, exactly. All right, folks, we'll be back right after Pippin's school.

unknown

Yep.

SPEAKER_02

I just didn't think they jumped the gun.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, they did, Tom. They certainly did.

SPEAKER_02

They did.

SPEAKER_03

But hey folks, they're jumping the gun a little. It's gonna happen. All right.

SPEAKER_02

Listener Voicemails Read Aloud

SPEAKER_03

Probably here and there, but they need to get their shit together and figure out what they're gonna do. I don't know how this is gonna go.

SPEAKER_02

Are they even able to sit down and get a system? Uh whole show?

SPEAKER_03

That whole debacle there on the holiday special.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's the holiday special. Lock the door. Don't want nobody. Absolutely. Anyway.

SPEAKER_03

Well, Tom. I want to read some voicemails.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, cool. Voicemails are always good.

SPEAKER_03

I like I record them. Wish I would have funny.

SPEAKER_02

Some of them are. Some of them are.

SPEAKER_03

Oh okay. First one is uh confused listener. Oh we have confused listeners? And I'm gonna try to read it and how they would uh yeah. Hey, Mike and Tom. Just calling a say, I thought this was a cooking podcast. What? I've been listening for 40 minutes. Nobody's giving me a recipe. One star. But still listening though. Alright, hey, space cut out. Let me lay off the freaking edibles. 40 minutes into a show when you're not cooking. I should have freaking been something triggering you.

SPEAKER_02

Listen. Listen, if you want my recipe, okay? Boil water on the stove. Add one pack of hot dogs. Boil for about 10 minutes. Turn the fire off so you don't burn your damn house down, idiot. And get some bread and mayonnaise and have a good day.

SPEAKER_03

There you go, buddy. There you go. See, there you got a you got a recipe after all.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you did.

SPEAKER_03

Alright. But you're still listening. This message is on this one's for you, buddy. Oh, wonderful. Your wife says if you mention the sounds you hear in the uh woods aren't Bigfoot anymore. One more time. You're sleeping in the garage. Again. Again. The noises you hear in the woods are not all Bigfoot? They're not always Bigfoot. They are. You might be sleeping in the garage. Probably. I just mentioned it.

SPEAKER_02

I sleep in the garage a lot.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Yeah. This town of uh Oh, you know, we guys record. Just a reminder. Sar custom levels exceeded the legal limit about ten minutes in.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

We got a smart ass.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. From where we are. We have a smart ass. Well, okay, first off, if you knew us, you'd know what town we're from.

SPEAKER_03

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_02

Dumbass.

SPEAKER_03

Alright, wait a minute. We got one more, yeah. Oh, one more. Okay. Just calling to say I agree with you. Then I did. Then I did again. I'm exhausted, thanks.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Well, let me just say that's exactly what we were working for. What we're going for? Yep. Confusion. Confusion.

SPEAKER_03

Tombo look! Look who called then. Who? We had a call from Carl. Carl? Carl's slightly used, mostly legal outlet. Mostly legal outlet. Are we just idiot? Hey, buddy. Your advertisement went out. You're still paying us.

SPEAKER_02

You are paying us this much. You gotta call it.

SPEAKER_03

Anyways, we'd like to pull our ad and our name and our dignity. Nope, Carl. Nope. You'll forever be named in this podcast.

SPEAKER_02

Always. And your dignity. You pulled that a long time ago. You have no dignity. You might as well be called Phil's Fashion Box.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so next time we'll get into that. We'll uh I'll make sure you record them next time. Yeah. We'd like to hear these.

SPEAKER_02

Some of these people are unstable, it sounds like.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

Playlist Highlights And Track Reactions

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. These are fans we want to see, right? Do we want to go live and s show these people where we're at? And they're like, hell no! Yeah, exactly. Hell no.

SPEAKER_03

Yikes! Alright, let's get back to uh reality. Yes, reality. Alright, so some of the tracks we've got here, Tom. Seven old wind. And I liked how they rocked it up. It is. But it's it's kept that uh that same vibe to it.

SPEAKER_02

Yep, it's got the same story.

SPEAKER_03

Thunder Cash 69. Yeah. By John B and uh Johnny Cash mashed up. Mashed up. That's great. That was a good that is an excellent one. Uh, if you listen to Nutshell, I did.

SPEAKER_02

Very, very I have not listened to that one yet. It's it's more of a calm rock. Okay. Something more mellow. Let me just say more mellow.

SPEAKER_03

That's okay.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, but it was a good song. Good story.

SPEAKER_03

Alright, that's all that matters when you hear that. Okay. How about girls and gasoline? Yeah. Oh, wait.

SPEAKER_02

Wait. Now the song makes sense. Never mind. I thought it said girls and Vaseline. Oh.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, well, that makes sense.

SPEAKER_02

Well, it did for me for a minute. But now you say gasoline. Okay. Uh now that makes more sense.

SPEAKER_03

Got some good books in it. Okay. Here's my one of my favorites. Now I'd like a lot of these the other side.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, the other side was a good one.

SPEAKER_03

Great, great song. Yeah. How about Runky County Cowboys? That's a good song. That's a good one. I think I said, oh, that's one that Tom and I would really like get right into. Yeah, the water water in the whale. Water in the Well's another good one. That's a heavy too. That's heavy. Redneck Rich.

SPEAKER_02

Redneck Rich. Yeah, that was a good one.

SPEAKER_03

Shit up.

SPEAKER_02

You got a pond full of fish. Long-haired country boy. That is. Come on, Murl, you can't beat Murrow.

SPEAKER_03

And they put their own spin on it, and I like that.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, and it was very, very respectful. Uh very good. Very good version of that song.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, excellent. Excellent version. How about putting your whiskey with your mouth in?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I like doing that.

SPEAKER_03

I thought you put songs.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, it's a song. That's a song. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay.

SPEAKER_03

I'm from? Yeah, the bird of the personal hard-hitting song with storytelling roots. The lyrics. Even I know a lot of these the covers. But even your own. Great lyrics.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they do have good songwriting abilities.

SPEAKER_03

Water in the Well, which you just mentioned.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's a good one.

SPEAKER_03

Country Alive. Yeah. Another one burned out. Uh that's got grips. Got good riffs in that one. I like that. Uh Trouble with Trouble's another good song. Yeah. So keep a bad one. Well, check these guys out. If you probably already have, Tom and I have always behind. I've got to fall in that rabbit hole in YouTube, and that's how this happened. So But uh yeah, definitely check them out.

Good luck to you, because it looks like we are going to be in the championship game.

SPEAKER_03

SPEAKER_03

And again, our main page, the mtaltpod.com. That's our website. Yep. Little microphone on the bottom right hand side. Just push that little button. You can record a message. Let us know what you think, how we're doing, anything. All comments will be uh read and taken into consideration, maybe. Yeah. Something like that.

SPEAKER_02

We'll consider it. But uh, Tom, good show. It was a good show.

SPEAKER_03

And uh we'll be back next week for the who knows who what band we'll be talking about.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, there's gonna be some bands. Yeah. New bands, things we dig up. Yep, we dig these things up out of the middle of these are these are just bands we we didn't know about. I mean, and we're gonna just bring them up and see if y'all knew about them. And if you did, tell us about them. What was your experience?

SPEAKER_03

You pay your concert or have you been?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, have you yeah, interested to hear that? Yeah, because I'm getting ready to look up tickets for Concord. If I mean if it was a horrible experience, I'd like to know about it. I doubt it would be. I really do too. I mean, unless they jack off and throw everything out there in the audience. Can I get front row seats? Anyway, well, so yeah, it's been a great podcast.

SPEAKER_03

Good podcast, and I guess that'll do it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. But you know, as always, we would like to thank God for the gift of Gab. Everyone, take care.

SPEAKER_03
