CMC Conversation Radio PODCAST
Hey uh Charles McCullough, what an honor to speak once again with uh Matt Maddie Powell. You've gained you've grown about a foot since I talked to you in November of last year. Yes. But uh wow. So Maddie, Lord have mercy, and you don't have that r thigh length uh rubber protective uh wrap. First of all, explain what that was.
SPEAKER_02Um it was just for like I had some knee pain and it was kind of just affecting my IT bands, so it's just kind of to keep it warm while I play and so it doesn't get too cold.
SPEAKER_00And you're feeling a lot better now.
SPEAKER_02Yes, I am.
SPEAKER_00Woo! You sure are demonstrating that on the kills. I I knew I was talking to Olivia, but man, you originated the nuclear power as POW, ELL, the POW and the power of the kill. I don't know where y'all get this strength. Olivia was telling me y'all are all power lifting. You must be Olympic uh caliber.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I definitely um work out a lot for power and definitely like go out and try and aim for like more powerful hits and stuff, but also placing the ball in the court.
SPEAKER_00What exercises or lifts and routine in the gym off-season and maybe during the season too, along with the practice obviously of the actual volleyball skill sets, uh, do you feel are really helping you develop this incredible power? Because just to look at you uh young ladies, uh it would not be detectable that you would be beast mode to step up to an Olympic bar and clean and jerk 500 pounds, but you're close to doing that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I definitely say weightlifting for sure, like bench press and squats and stuff help. And then also focusing on like your core and stuff to generate that power is where it comes from. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00Now, Miss Maddie, y'all have the rotation. I've seen you since you were a little girl, freshman coming up, and now graduating senior. There are seven other seniors, and y'all are all taking it to the next level. What are your plans post-high school?
SPEAKER_02Um, I'm going to play beach volleyball at Charlatan State University.
SPEAKER_00Beach volleyball. Now I had Morgan Regner over at Lake tell me she was going to Florida to play beach volleyball. Now, I know Miss Cayley's going to Texas Tech, I think for regular volleyball, but uh, although they do have sand up there in uh Lubbock. But let me ask you this what is there about beach volleyball that kind of gives you that extra uh desire to continue playing volleyball with that variety of it?
SPEAKER_02Um, I think for beach volleyball, it's really shown me that there's more to just like hitting the ball super hard and being like the most powerful player and tallest player. I think you can definitely like use your IQ and stuff and like vision of the court to see there's like more stuff open. So I think Beach has definitely shown that, and I've brought it into my indoor game for sure.
SPEAKER_00And speaking of IQ, if there's a VQ of volleyball quotient, you are the genius of all time. I mean, you seem to know exactly when to get the dig, exactly when to get the set. I mean, you can dig it, you can set it, you can serve it, you can kill it, uh, you can do everything down there. Lord have mercy. That's that's really incredible for a uh volleyball player.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Steph. I think Beach has for sure helped me with that, being able to do it all and stuff. And I think like using my like peripheral vision and stuff to see the core has helped me a lot.
SPEAKER_00Now uh the rotation is down, Pat. You girls having come all the way to seniors, you know how to exactly uh kind of psych out the other team and get the right set or kill it uh right at that moment if you feel like you're right uh at the moment of being able to do that without having to send it over to Gavin or Kaylee or Olivia or uh uh President Reagan. Uh but tell me a little bit about uh uh is this just instinctive by now? You don't really have to think or overthink anything. You're just natural.
SPEAKER_02Um, I think definitely like getting the set there and stuff is natural. Um I think we do a pretty good job at moving our ball around and having good hitters everywhere, so we can definitely use that to move the block around so our block our hitters have more seams and stuff to stri swing more. So, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Finally, Maddie, and thank you so much for coming up here to talk to the radio guy at Barbers Hill, where you really have to come up to the nosebleeds up here to uh talk to somebody. What do you like studying in school and where do you look at including academics at the next level along with your volleyball? Uh uh wonderful upgrade.
SPEAKER_02Um, I'm planning to major in biology so I could hopefully go on and do forensic science after college and study in that field. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00Man, that's absolutely fantastic. Finally, what does Coach Shannon McClellan bring to the table that motivates all you young ladies to almost as if she's the seventh young lady, not on the court, but kind of on the side that it makes y'all feel that you can always do your best?
SPEAKER_02I think she definitely helps us with our um like emotions as a group. Like if we're ever going through a hard time, she definitely is there for us and stuff, so she helps us get through those. And then she definitely like helps us on the court and stuff for sure by helping us know what to do and all that. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00Maddie Powell, what an honor. Number nine. And I'm telling you, Nicola Tesla said there's magic in that number nine, and this young lady brings that magic every time she appears on the court. Thank you for coming up to talk to me. Anything else you'd like to add, Maddie Powell.
SPEAKER_02Um, no, I'm just super excited for this season. I hope we go far.
SPEAKER_00Hey, it's got to be Kinley Surree, and yes, Suri, Kinley number 12. I remember you when I first saw you playing for Coach Jennifer Knight coming up as a little freshman, as a courtesy runner going from first to second sliding in. Man, you're really all over the map in Clear Springs athletics, but now I'm watching you like a ninja, a net assassin at the net against these teams. You'll come in at that right moment, and all of a sudden the spikes are coming down almost as hard. Right there, Gavin and Kaylee. What's going on with that power?
SPEAKER_01Um, I don't know. I think it's just a lot of work and dedication. It's different from softball. Like I want to push myself, especially from coming from running and then being able to come to volleyball, which is my main sport that I love. And also, yeah, also coming from track last year, too.
SPEAKER_00I know that's right. Well, Kenley, what do you like studying in school?
SPEAKER_01Um, I want to be a counselor in education.
SPEAKER_00Wow. You know what? You've got that psychiatric ability, in other words, so you can kind of scope out the players on the other teams and kind of get a read on them. Do you feel that helps you? Yes, sir. What are you looking for in weaknesses in the other team when you just instinctively know you can get that kill and spike it in? Because man, your kills are it's like the Chick's the Cub asteroid that brought down most of the dinosaurs. It's pretty incredible.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. I just look for like mood and attitude, really, just be like someone's attitude. Like if it if they're down, obviously you can get in their head more.
SPEAKER_00Well, Kenley, as one of the uh eight graduating seniors and everyone going to college, fantastic. Uh, where do you plan on taking your skill set to the next level, ma'am?
SPEAKER_01Um, I'm not too sure yet, but I don't think I'm gonna be playing at the next level.
SPEAKER_00Well, you know what? Whatever you do, the experience you are bringing us a winner for the Claire Springs athletic programs here under Coach Knot and Coach McClellan are gonna make you a champion no matter what you do. If you run for president one day, I'll definitely vote for you. What does Coach Shannon finally, little girl, bring to the table that makes you feel you're at best and make it happen and manifest that right out there on the court?
SPEAKER_01Um, I guess just her putting me in situations when we're down, or like some players are like messing up, and she gives me an opportunity and trusting me enough to know that I'm capable of coming in those moments and getting a job done.
SPEAKER_00You're gonna get that job done, Judah. Hey, that's number 12, Miss Kenley Surree. Yes, Suri. She's the girl that's gonna get the job done. The ninja sneak up on it the last minute. Where'd she come from? There she is, and there's that spike. Man wins half the sets in the match. I'll tell you, I thank you. God bless anything else, Kenley Suri, that you would like to have.
SPEAKER_01Thank you.
