It is Finished | John 19:28-42
Jesus’s death and burial means that I must die to myself. I won’t experience His power until I surrender my former way of life. To be raised to new life, the old self must die and be buried. That means coming to Jesus is about surrender. For “those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires” (Gal. 5:24).
When we met Nicodemus in John 3, he was a scared and lost man. He was drawn to Jesus, but he came to Him by night because he was not ready to let go of his former way of life. Nicodemus now takes part in burying Jesus’s body, signaling that his old self was dead and new life had arrived! “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20).
