Three Guys Around a Table and The Best Of…
Why College Football Keeps Firing Coaches And Paying Them Millions
Three guys around the table. And by three guys, we're talking about three friends: a lawyer, an engineer, and a school superintendent.
SPEAKER_01:And just like our personalities, our opinions vary, and we certainly don't always agree. Whether we're discussing the best of or giving our tips and tricks of things in everyday life, you're sure to learn something if you stick around.
SPEAKER_02:So we can talk about lots of things uh this week. Um we are recording this on October 22nd, I think, right? 21st. Look, close enough. Yeah, 21st. It's late. The the days, the the days of our kind, unbutted. Um it's late, so it's fun. But man, there's a lot of stuff going on with college football right now. I think that's got to be the focus of this episode of the best of slash three guys around the table, slash the bear brothers proudly present. Let's go. Let's go. College football. And we've got one person here who's a little under the weather. One was a little under under the weather a few days ago, but I'm much better now.
SPEAKER_03:You are. You were in bad shape.
SPEAKER_02:I was not feeling good, but uh college football.
SPEAKER_03:So we're not gonna have a new number one team after this week.
SPEAKER_02:No.
SPEAKER_03:Uh we feel comfortable with that. That's about the only thing in college football I'm comfortable with.
SPEAKER_02:The Ohio State University Buckeyes are going to win this week against by. Bai's legit, though. Uh but wow, what did we have happen this past weekend? Not just at the time, do we want to talk about games first or do we want to talk about coaches first? Let's talk coaches.
SPEAKER_03:All right. So the big firing this week. Yes. After the big firing a couple weeks ago. And the big firing this week was Billy Napier out of Florida. Yep. He's gone. He's gone. Um and what what do you think about these schools firing these coaches? I mean, none of them's as bad still as what Jimbo Fisher was. Yeah, it's true. But what do you think about these schools firing these coaches and paying them millions and millions and millions of dollars to not coach your team?
SPEAKER_02:So I don't understand it. Um, and here's here's where I'm at with it. Uh think about it from this perspective. Like the uh let's talk about the NFL for a second. Yep. Um, professional football, most NFL contracts are not guaranteed. The vast majority of them are not guaranteed contracts. So when you see in free agency someone signs a three-year,$60 million deal, oh, he's getting$20 million a year. Well, if he stinks after year one, they're gonna cut him. And so it basically it was a one-year,$20 million contract. Right. He's not owed the rest of his contract.
SPEAKER_00:Right.
SPEAKER_02:Why are these college coaching contracts guaranteed?
SPEAKER_03:Is it the I mean, is it the agent's fault or the agent doing a great job? Or is it the AD's fault for for either extending contracts or making contracts this way? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:I I think in the in the business world, um, I have a I I'm on a limited guaranteed contract in in my profession. So unless there was cause if there was some kind of cause, right?
SPEAKER_00:Right.
SPEAKER_02:Um, I don't even know. And I know in some of these cases, like for instance, if one of these coaches murdered someone, there would be cause, they wouldn't have to pay out the deserve traction. Uh that's a different question. Um, but cause is not about wins and losses. No, definitely not. So uh, you know, I think that the agents are taking care of them. Here's here's where I'm I let me let me go back to Penn State for a second, because we know we'll just round up it was 49 million, say it was 50 million dollars. Right. Okay. That that they're paying him. And as I mentioned on the last episode, it's really more like a$75 million deal because you're gonna have to pay the new person, you're gonna have to pay the old coaches, you're gonna have to pay the new coaches, uh, you know. So long story short, even just taking that$50 million, how much does it cost to go to Penn State every year for a student? I don't let's just guess and say fifty grand. Yeah, that's fine. Let's say fifty grand, right? So if you take fifty million dollars and you divide that, and maybe Chris, this is where you could help us out. Uh if you take fifty million dollars and you divide that by fifty thousand uh dollars of tuition. What is that? 50 million divided by 50,000.$1,000. A thousand. It's a thousand fifty thousand. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. That's a thousand scholarships that you could provide to students that you could pay for them to go to Penn State for that year or whatever, right? Or for yeah, sure. Long story short, you're paying$50 million to a guy to not coach who's gonna go in a in a month and he's gonna interview and get a job somewhere else.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, and I know some of these contracts have a duty to mitigate or something like that. So if they get another job, then that offsets the amount that you have to pay. I don't know if Franklin's is that way.
SPEAKER_01:But right, but what do you guys is that way, actually.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, I I just didn't remember. But what do you think about okay? Do you well let me ask this do you think Billy Napier deserved to be fired?
SPEAKER_02:I think he's deserved to be fired if you're only looking at performance.
SPEAKER_01:If you're looking at Florida standards, where they have been, you know, they've won the championship how many times? Yeah. He's what 20, 22 and 24 in his career there. That's not up to their par.
SPEAKER_03:So but um but I think and and look schools can get in this situation, but but Florida's gonna re-examine where they're at. Right. I mean, look, when Spurrier was there, they were the top dog. Yep. Then they fell down a bunch. Yep. And then when Urban Meyer was there, they were the top dog. Yep. And they've not been there since then. Right.
unknown:Yep.
SPEAKER_03:Now can they be? Absolutely. I think that school is primed to be a big football school.
SPEAKER_01:That's so many high school, top high school players down there that they get approved from, right? Yeah, sure.
SPEAKER_02:Why why do you make that move now? Why don't you just that's that's what I was getting ready to say.
SPEAKER_03:Why do you fire James Franklin now? Right. Why do you fire because because if you're gonna get a big name college coach, presumably that college coach will be coaching until January. Yep. So I don't know how you're benefiting yourself by making this move now.
SPEAKER_02:Every one of those recruits that James Franklin recruited at Penn State, every one of them's getting called by every major car. Sure, yeah. You know, Ryan Day's uh probably there at those kids' schools this week because they're on the bye, right?
SPEAKER_01:And that's the guy that's a lifetime contract in a while.
SPEAKER_02:Should he is God, you should pray to him.
SPEAKER_03:That's that's interesting, man. That's interesting. So I almost said it was straight face. What do you think about Penn State not having a team? They shouldn't have one. What do you what do you think about Indiana's approach to this situation? Um, I don't like it either. And um So Indiana signed their coach nine years, some gazillions of dollars. And he'll never he'll never fulfill it. The name's Sigrini. Something like that. Kirk Signetti. Yeah, that thing. Hey, just Google him. All he does is win. And he said it. That's what AJ Cowan said. Hey, but look, let's let's be honest about it. Indiana rolling.
SPEAKER_02:Number two in the country. He's done a great job there.
SPEAKER_03:I mean, and they're rolling. Yep. Um, but I think that is a little bit, I mean, I understand they want to lock him up because he would have been, he would have been a he would have probably been the top dog of sure coaching candidates. You have to, right? I mean, you but but did they go too far? Yeah, of course. That's my question. Well, and gosh. I I mean because let's be honest about it. Yeah. It's still Indiana. Yeah. I'm for Indiana, it's like Kentucky.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Football's never gonna be the top dog, right? Yep. I mean, it's just not. Look, people love football at Kentucky. But it ain't basketball.
SPEAKER_02:No, nope. Same thing with basketball at Ohio State. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:It ain't football.
SPEAKER_02:Ohio State signed some five-star recruit today. Yep.
SPEAKER_03:And who Kentucky was recruiting. Right. First big, big recruit they've had in a long time. Long time. But so if they signed, if they got a commitment from a five-star football player quarterback, what would have got what got more headlines today?
SPEAKER_02:I know you don't don't follow Ohio State social media or anything like that, but what got more headlines today was Ryan Day having his his press conference for the week on a bye week. It got more headlines than them than the basketball team signed a five-star guy. Right. Right? That's just the life and the big thing.
SPEAKER_03:All right, let me ask this question. All right. Where's Coach Prime? Florida. I mean, seriously. We now he's I mean two years ago, he was the king of college.
SPEAKER_02:Could have written his ticket.
SPEAKER_03:He could have he could have called Florida and said, Florida, I'm coming down there. Yep. And then said, All right, come on. Yep. Not happening. Where's he at now? Not happening. Who who do you think takes the Florida job? Kevin Lane Kevin. I think that's a good possibility. Hands down.
SPEAKER_02:I I don't see Kiffen necessarily leaving.
SPEAKER_03:Now, if you believe Twitter.
SPEAKER_01:Which we all do.
SPEAKER_03:Then Ole Miss is trying to lock him up like Indiana has. And that's because he's gonna be a popular pick.
SPEAKER_02:And and again, I uh why? I don't get it. What what's the what's the the next big game that he wins will be the first one.
SPEAKER_03:Are you saying he's the James Franklin of the SEC?
SPEAKER_02:I'm saying that. I am stating it for a fact. What happened this past weekend? Old. They got smacked. Well, they were playing well, and then all of a sudden, when it came crunch time, yeah, they their offense couldn't move the football.
SPEAKER_03:Can I tell you something I love about Lane Kiffin? I'd love for Lane Kiffin is Lane Kiffin. Lane Kiffin is a coach you would love to coach your team. If he's yours, you love him, but you hate him if not. But did you see that he called a timeout and then he went to the referee and said I didn't call a timeout? Such a I can't believe Kirby Smart did that. How about he's denied doing it though?
SPEAKER_02:He definitely did it. Did you see Lane Kiffin uh troll Kirby Smart during the week for being fat? Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:It doesn't look like he's burnt too many times. For being fat. Look, Lane Kiffin goes gets his hot yoga on on Saturday mornings. Yep. Yep. So I ain't hating on him. So so long story short.
SPEAKER_02:But Old Miss is partial in our house right now. Oh, yeah. Imagine that. Lane Kiffen is going to crank them up at Old Miss for as many dollars as he can get. Sure. I think he's gonna stay there because why why would you Well, it's it's it's a lot like the Kentucky job. If you can win 10 games a year, everybody's happy. Yep, exactly. I think down deep down he knows that. Right. And you go into that pressure cooker that's Florida, where there are expectations. There aren't expectations that old miss. So who's gonna be Florida's coach if it's not Lane Kiffin? I think it could be a curveball, like someone out of left field that you wouldn't think about. I don't know. Dan Mullen.
SPEAKER_03:No way, no way, no way they're taking it back. But Kentucky, Kentucky would take Dan Mullen in a heartbeat.
SPEAKER_01:But uh Oh, Coach O, he wants to come back. Oh, what about uh what's the guy's name?
SPEAKER_02:Urban Meyer?
SPEAKER_01:No, the Raiders, the guy with the Raiders.
SPEAKER_02:Um Gruden?
SPEAKER_01:John Gruden.
SPEAKER_03:See, that would be that I could I could almost see that.
SPEAKER_02:That would be out of left field, and it would be a splash hire, and he wants to get back into coaching. So and he lives in Florida.
SPEAKER_01:And they have a great SID down there too. Scott Strickland.
SPEAKER_02:So that that would be that's interesting, man. That's that's interesting. Who do you think Penn State's gonna be? Um it's a Matt Rule situation for me. Uh I think he's probably the favorite for their job. And uh Nebraska's current coach. Do does Nebraska step up and pay him i.e. He's done a good job there.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. Jerry Sandusky.
SPEAKER_03:Uh probably not. Is that guy still alive, by the way?
SPEAKER_01:I hope he's dead. Should be dead if he's not.
SPEAKER_03:That's harsh. Well, now, what do you think about Florida State's decision to keep their coach currently?
SPEAKER_02:Uh I think it if I if I criticized it, I would be arguing against the same logic that I used earlier.
SPEAKER_03:So you think that's the right decision to make the decision at the end of the year?
SPEAKER_02:That that's what you need to do. Um, because again, at least now the the recruits that they've signed or that that they have pledged, excuse me, they can continue to talk to those guys and say, here's what we're doing, this is how we're gonna move forward, da-da-da-da-da. Then if it happens at the very end, a lot of those other teams have already moved on to their next recruits. Right. So Can't the players leave like 60 days after a couple of years?
SPEAKER_03:I think it's 30 days, but they have a window in which they can heard of any players leaving anywhere. But when you're limited to 85 scholarships now, true. Yeah, and they can't really leave right now, they're in the middle of the season. Right. So they can't. I mean, but you're not gonna be able to do that.
SPEAKER_01:You're not sure the tops of the top, they're not worried about that anyway, right?
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, but they're not gonna go and then not play the rest of the year. Right.
SPEAKER_01:I I mean so goofy. The firing a coach in the middle of the season is just so it's strange. Weird. Yeah. I mean, you're making a point and listening to your fans, but I don't know much beside that.
SPEAKER_03:So who had the best week last week in college football?
SPEAKER_02:That team had betting wise. Oh, that was a rough week.
SPEAKER_03:Um yeah, I did okay.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, yeah. Not great, but I did okay. It was a tough week because there were some games that were like that's a um I think Miami had the worst week.
SPEAKER_01:I think Louisville it pains me to say that. Well, of course, their quarterback had four interceptions.
SPEAKER_03:Well, here's what I'll tell you about Louisville. Louisville had a really good win. Okay. It was a great win. But I will tell you this right now. If I'm Scott Strickland at Florida and I don't get Lane Kiven, Jeff Braum, Jeff Braum's my next phone call. Yeah, he's good. He can coach. Um I mean, look, he did good things at Purdue.
SPEAKER_02:Yep. With nothing. Look what's happened since they left. Yeah, with nothing.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Uh he he would be on my radar for the coach.
SPEAKER_01:Uh Rondale Moore's the best player he had up there at the time, right? Yeah. Yeah. Um pulled that one out of nowhere.
SPEAKER_02:So that was good. Yeah, impressive.
SPEAKER_01:You got him mustered and biscuits.
SPEAKER_02:Um so he he can coach and he had those guys prepared to play. Oh my goodness. I watched that game.
SPEAKER_03:The the the first part of the game, Louisville just absolutely dominated.
SPEAKER_02:Smacked him. I mean, smacked him up and down the field. And uh this is the this is the team that, you know, uh, should they be number one in the country? Miami, uh, you know.
SPEAKER_03:Oh that obviously not now. They're their record, their resume was pretty strong before that game.
SPEAKER_02:And that makes you that makes you think how how good were those wins, you know? Yeah. I I mean because to lay an egg at home against Louisville, who 20, 25, something like that. They're decent. I mean, they're and they're well coached and they were ready. Yep. And Miami wasn't. Yep. And everyone's all oh, Mario Crystal Ball. Uh well, you know what? Didn't work out. He did not have his team ready to play. Right. And the U ain't back. And guess who broke the U? The Ohio State University in 2002. Actually, it was January of 2003. Um, we broke the U. I don't think that's the case. But we have a t-shirt.
SPEAKER_03:We broke the U.
SPEAKER_02:They haven't won anything since then.
SPEAKER_03:Catholics versus convicts. Ohio State broke the U first. But uh that's also not accurate if you're 2002.
SPEAKER_02:The year before. The year before the U was national champions. Yeah. Since that time. Jim Trestle, he they got trestled.
SPEAKER_03:Jim Trestle was terrible. They got trestled. I love a good sweater belt. Jim Trestle was terrible. No, he was terrible. Oh. So I looked at Ohio State's schedule. Yep. It's not the best. No. No, they play who they gotta play. They play who you gotta play. I don't I don't disagree with that.
SPEAKER_02:Beginning of the year, Penn State was sure the schedule says the schedule.
SPEAKER_03:The schedule looked great much better at the beginning of the year. Now it doesn't look very good. Yep. I mean, Illinois has fallen off a little bit.
SPEAKER_02:I think Illinois and Washington of the teams that they've played or are on their schedule. I think both of those teams are going to be top 20 teams at the end of the year. I think so. I think that I think Washington's laying some eggs, dude.
SPEAKER_03:Well, it's I think Illinois gonna be top 20. I mean, they don't play Indiana.
SPEAKER_02:Washington had to they don't play Oregon. Yeah, Washington had to go and play at Michigan and just got pounded. Just stupid, just dumb. Uh they did not play well. But but but but having said that, yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Um yeah, their their schedule is it's um it looked better at the beginning of the season than what it actually is. Yeah. And I can't believe they don't play Penn State or Oregon. I mean, they play Penn State, but Penn State's not what they were. I can't believe they don't play Indiana or Oregon. And they played both last year.
SPEAKER_02:I mean, that's what happens when you have 18 teams. Yeah, I looked it up. I didn't know how many it was.
SPEAKER_03:It's crazy. But so who are they gonna play in the conference championship game?
SPEAKER_02:Uh it'll be Indiana.
SPEAKER_03:I didn't know if you all had divisions or whatever. No, it's two two. It used to be. Yeah, we did too, but now it's just two of us. It's two best teams.
SPEAKER_02:It'll be Indiana. Indiana's got the head-to-head over Oregon. If Indiana wins out, obviously, and Ohio State wins out, then right. Those are two big ifs, though. I mean, they're still, you know. Ohio State's got nobody.
SPEAKER_03:Well, they they should they should go undefeated. They should, but they play Michigan. Crazier things have happened. So uh and and all he's gotta say is Michigan's gonna man up, or Ohio State needs to man up and they'll get beat. Exactly. Um Indiana, you know. Um I'm looking to see who they play. They got they got a rough one this week. They got UCLA. UCLA is already playing decent.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Uh and they play nobody else either. Uh they play UCLA, Maryland, Penn State, Wisconsin, and Purdue. They play nobody. Yep.
SPEAKER_02:Um it's sad to say Penn State is nobody because it's Yeah, they're nobody now. If they had their quarterback, I don't think people would be saying that. Penn State almost won this week when they, you know, they didn't have their quarterback.
SPEAKER_03:Having said that, when you get beat to Northwestern, yeah, I know it's over.
SPEAKER_02:I know. It's over. Believe me. Yeah. That's James Franklin. So where does he end up?
SPEAKER_01:And how quickly does he get picked up? I think he's got his choice of I think he gets a job quick. I think he does two.
SPEAKER_03:Uh if the Kentucky job comes open, I would not want him for that job. Because he can't beat a top ten team, so that's five losses a year in this.
SPEAKER_02:So who looks better to you right now? I'm not even gonna say. I haven't watched Ohio State play. Oh, I'm not even talking about Ohio State. So take them off the SEC only. Who Alabama. Do you think that when, you know, if and when they would play Georgia? They did. They beat them. I know, I know.
SPEAKER_03:Um Yeah, I mean, right now they'd be playing Texas AM in the championship game.
SPEAKER_02:Texas AM, I'm sorry. They they should have uh They just keep winning. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:And I don't like it, but they just keep winning.
SPEAKER_02:But and by the way, that coach right there, Mike Elko, right? Uh-huh. He might be he might be someone to look at for that Florida job.
SPEAKER_03:Is he I don't think he's splashy enough for him. I mean, they always they always try to get Urban Meyer, or not Ur either Urban Meyer or Steve Spurrier.
SPEAKER_02:Sure, but when you've got Texas AM in the top five in the country.
SPEAKER_03:I mean, look, I know Alabama laid an egg the first game of the season. Against against a team that's terrible at Florida State that is freaking terrible. They're terrible. How does that happen? In the last They have beat four top 20 teams the last four weeks. So who are those four teams? They beat Georgia at Georgia. Yeah. They beat Vanderbilt. They beat Missouri at Missouri, and they beat Tennessee. I mean, those are legit top 20 teams. Yeah. And they beat them all pretty easy. Again, beginning of year. I mean except Georgia. Beginning of the year. You picked them.
SPEAKER_02:This you had two thumbs and picked Alabama to win it.
SPEAKER_03:And and right now they look good. I don't trust their coach, but right now they look good.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. Um so what do we think about Vandy? I think uh as soon as uh as soon as they play someone talent equated, they're gonna get s smacked.
SPEAKER_01:I think it's I think it's the same thing as I don't think they'll get smacked.
SPEAKER_03:I mean, uh I watched a lot of the Vandy Alabama game. And for about 40 minutes they were com I mean they they competed with them. Uh I think their coach is too good of a coach for them to get smacked.
SPEAKER_01:I think he's gone.
SPEAKER_03:And I think Oh, it won't stun me at all if he goes someplace else.
SPEAKER_01:I think Vandy will be the um go back quickly to where they were. I think this is.
SPEAKER_03:Well, when they when they lose that quarterback, the quarterback knows how to win. Yeah. I don't love him, but he knows how to win. And their coach is really good. But the rest of their schedule, I mean, they got college game day in Nashville this weekend. Well unbelievable. Because they got Missouri coming in. Then they play Texas, Auburn, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
SPEAKER_02:So I sent you all not changing the subject. Um well, it's kind of related because there's some teams that you just mentioned I wanted to get your opinion on. I sent you all the um the stop rate um for defenses. It's uh analytic. The best defenses in college football at getting stops and preventing points.
SPEAKER_03:Right. Ohio State was one.
SPEAKER_02:Ohio State was one, Oklahoma is two, and they're very close. Texas is three.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, had that work out in overtime for Kentucky. Two plays right up the gut.
SPEAKER_02:Right, right. So, but Texas being third, that was a little surprising to me. Um they've got no offense. Yep, right.
SPEAKER_03:The problem with Texas is their quarterback plays terrible. It stinks. I he stinks. Kentucky's red shirt freshman destroyed him this weekend. Yep.
SPEAKER_02:Then we got Texas Tech coming in at four.
SPEAKER_03:They bought the NIL.
SPEAKER_02:Yep. And uh and they got beat by Arizona State this past weekend. And then in fifth, you got Toledo. I mean, who doesn't play anybody? Um they played Kentucky. That that pumped up those stats. Right. But then uh you got San Diego State, James Madison. Then we get into some more Big Ten teams. Oregon, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, all the next four in a row. Right. And then LSU after that.
SPEAKER_03:LSU, teams that's not very good. When's Brian Kelly get fired? That's is he the next big one to get fired?
SPEAKER_02:That's what I was going to ask. The fact that I I can't believe they hired him in the first place, and then he goes down there and Cooper that he's not a fit.
SPEAKER_03:No. I mean, it's not a personality fit.
SPEAKER_02:No, no. He's he's a Midwest coach. He he needs to be coaching.
SPEAKER_01:The whole thing on that rotating camera where he's awesome. I keep sending it to you guys bad. So bad. It's so bad.
SPEAKER_02:Oh my god. It's so awful. And when he when he faked the Southern accent in his first press conference, come on. Terrible. Uh so I think he's I think he's gonna go. Um, if not during the year, obviously, I I think this is his last year at LSU. And then that becomes an attractive job. That's a good job. So the next question becomes do any of these guys who are retired, quote unquote, from coaching, do they get back into it?
SPEAKER_01:How's Urban Meyer feeling right now?
SPEAKER_02:How's Nick Saban feeling right now? Nick Saban does not get back in.
SPEAKER_01:Nick Saban has got it made. He he likes hanging out his best.
SPEAKER_03:I don't think he gets back in. I I don't think I don't think Urban Meyer gets back in.
SPEAKER_01:No, I think the programs have changed in recruiting at NIL. I mean, that's the reason Saban got out. Right. He said, I'm done with this.
SPEAKER_02:Well, he he knew that they couldn't play players. No, they can't they can play players. It's just it's got to be above on the same, on a on a different level.
SPEAKER_01:He goes, wait, wait, we can really play players? Well, everyone's paying players. This is great.
SPEAKER_03:So I don't know.
SPEAKER_01:You got him mustered and biscuits.
SPEAKER_03:I don't I know the three of us agree. I don't love the NIL situation, and I don't love the transfer portal to where you can play at six different schools.
SPEAKER_02:No. So Saban doesn't get back in, or doesn't get back in.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, Coach O will be the one that gets back in. No, nobody's gonna hire him, is the problem. He'll get back. I mean, uh he North Carolina would hire him.
SPEAKER_03:He had one great year because he had an outstanding quarterback.
SPEAKER_01:North Carolina will hire him. Oh, is what happened to North Carolina? Is uh Bilichek is he checking out?
SPEAKER_02:Oh, yeah, he's gone after this year. Uh I'm surprised he made it this far. They're terrible. Um look, I've got a Coach O story, and I've told you boys before, but I think it's worth mentioning once again that when he was after Ole Miss. That's when you were in the bathroom with him. Uh uh no, after that was a different story. After after Ole Miss, he was looking for a job at the NFL Scouting Combine, and I happened to be at the NFL Scouting Combine. Uh, not I I was not credentialed, I was snuck in kind of a thing, you know. And he walked up to me and said, Hey, how you doing? I'm at Orgeron. I'm like, Hey, Mark Cobbie, and blah blah blah. He's he's like, Where are you at? And I was like, Well, I'm at Kentucky State. And uh he goes, Well, uh, I'm gonna give him a card. And you know, uh, you hear anything, let me know. That's pretty cool. He literally was going around to everyone, giving them his card. You know what? That's I don't have a problem with that. I got two cards that day. His and some offensive line coach from the Minnesota Vikings.
SPEAKER_01:So, okay, so let's go. Let's we've not talked about my team yet. Or defense defensive line coach. We've not talked about my team yet. Go Tuggers. It stoops out at the end of the year.
SPEAKER_02:Look,$34 million is a lot less than 50.
SPEAKER_03:I have said it. I said it at the end of the season last season, and I said it at the beginning of the season this season. I think he will not be the head coach when we get to December.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, Mark. I agree. I agree as well. Now I think he'll negotiate. I think he'll play, he'll he'll be the nice guy so he can say face and come back and be revered. He may say, pay me my money over ten years or five years or whatever. I think he'll be picked up quickly as a coach. No, he won't. As a defensive line coach or defensive coordinator. Now, who takes his place? I mean, let's face it, Kentucky's not a destination job. Nope. It's an entryway, entry-level job to the SCP.
SPEAKER_02:It's a job where if you're a um if you're a coordinator at a at a decent sized school, you have a pretty good chance, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_03:I will tell you, uh and I've said it on here, I thought that Summerall would be the coach at Kentucky. I do not believe that to be the case.
SPEAKER_01:How's Tulane doing this year?
SPEAKER_03:Tulane's fine, they're good. Yeah. Uh I think I think he will be a coach in the SEC. I don't think he'll be at Kentucky.
SPEAKER_01:I think he'll be at Kentucky. Don't say Brad White.
SPEAKER_02:I think it's I think it's what I'm thinking. That's what I think.
SPEAKER_03:I think it's an uh uh up and coming according to if I was I I if I if you said Greg, who do you think it'll be right now? I think it would be Will Stone.
SPEAKER_01:I think so, yeah. Yeah, yeah. He does have history in Kentucky.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, he played at Louisville. So now there's a good chance.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, it could be Hartline, could be Brian Hartline too.
SPEAKER_02:I don't think he'll take that job.
SPEAKER_03:Do you think Hartline will take a head coaching job, do you?
SPEAKER_02:No. I think he'll do one more year as a coordinator. Um he's only been offensive coordinator this year. And And he's got it made pretty well. But he's an up and comer. Oh yeah, a hundred percent. He could get a job. I don't think he will this year. Where's uh I mean he's making dude, he's making almost two mil as a Kentucky play paying thirty-eight million for nothing.
SPEAKER_01:So where's uh where's my cart line at right now?
SPEAKER_02:I don't know, but Papa John's I've got he's a Kentucky. I've got a name for you. I didn't know that for the for the UK job. Are you ready? Joker Phillips.
SPEAKER_01:Oh my god, really? He was the coach in waiting. He was. Then he was the receiver's coach of Florida and Cincinnati and a little bit. I don't know where he is now. Yeah, Mike Line's a Kentucky.
SPEAKER_03:Did you know that Hell Mummy is still coaching? Uh he's an offensive coordinator at some Division III school. He looks like he looks like no, uh-uh. He looks like he's 190. I saw him on a video of the. I gotta be honest with you.
SPEAKER_01:That was so much fun when he was here.
SPEAKER_03:I'm gonna throw out a name of they didn't beat any big schools, but they I mean they'd get beat instead of getting beaten 69 to 6, it would be 69 to 50, and it was fun.
SPEAKER_01:But what I loved about it is I remember him letting I can't remember who we were playing, letting LSU score another. Because he wanted the ball back.
SPEAKER_02:So who what were you saying, Mark? I'm gonna throw out another name or a legitimate one. Or this could be a UK, someone that they would look at. Um or in all honesty, if Penn State doesn't get Matt Rule and I'm Penn State, I'm looking at this guy. The head coach of the University of South Florida Bulls, Alex Golish. I don't know how you say his last name.
SPEAKER_03:Goulash. He's done good at South Florida. He's doing a fantastic job. Well, just think about just think about the Indiana's coach. I mean, he was at James Madison and had a year or two real good there. And I mean, he's take care of business.
SPEAKER_02:Um, but I could honestly see Penn State, you know, taking a look uh if they don't get who they who they want.
SPEAKER_03:So when do are they coming out with um seems like they do. When do the rankings start coming out for the playoffs?
SPEAKER_02:Playoffs? Playoffs? Are you kidding me?
SPEAKER_03:Yes.
SPEAKER_02:Um I don't know. It should be any time, right?
SPEAKER_03:I mean, don't they start like week eight or something like that, and then they start saying here's who's in it right now? Or yeah. It'll be interesting to see who they got. I mean, I I've seen some projections. There are like five SEC teams in it, and like three maybe Big Ten teams in it. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02:And then you got Miami and Georgia Tech, and I think it'll be um you know, Georgia Tech, and that's another coach right there that's done a heck of a nice job. He um but um yeah, I think you could see Georgia Tech. Um let's just spitball him. Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Notre Dame's in. Miami's in. Um, as long as they have another.
SPEAKER_03:Okay, how many you got there? That's three. Then you had three Big Ten schools. It was Ohio State, and Ohio State. Right. Then you had five SEC schools. It was Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, Vandy, and Texas CM.
SPEAKER_02:That's the one I keep forgetting. I might pull Vandy off of that list because they're gonna have another loss. Uh but that's where we're at right now.
SPEAKER_03:Right. Don't forget Texas CM, and then we got two more teams somewhere. Yeah. Um you got to pick Big 12 school. Who's the best Big 12 school? Nobody cares, but who are they?
SPEAKER_02:Uh UC and and uh BYU are are gonna have a they play on November 22nd at Cincinnati. If both of those schools don't win or don't lose again before now, then that will be a game to be in the playoffs.
SPEAKER_03:Did you see this is this is an oddball. I'm gonna admit this is an oddball statement. But did you guys get to see any of the holy war this weekend between BYU and Utah? I didn't. Okay. Nope. The only reason why I bring it up is I think UK and Louisville should do this. So BYU Marry multiple women. BYU publicement full of dried beans and whatever. BYU wore all blue uniforms, blue helmets, blue jerseys, blue pants. Yep. And Utah were all red. Red, red, red. I think Louisville, Kentucky should do it. That'd be so cool. That'd be cool.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. So uh Hey, what about Dabbo Sweeney? Is he out?
SPEAKER_02:Oh, they lost again.
SPEAKER_03:You know what they did when they lost?
unknown:They paid me my money.
SPEAKER_01:Is he is he gone? Is he gone this year?
SPEAKER_02:I don't think so. Wow. Yeah, he in his statement after the game, after throwing his players under the bus and everything else, it was all about um daddy. Yeah, daddy bubble. It was all about daddy bubble, Daddy, Daddy, give me some ice cream, daddy.
SPEAKER_01:The phone rings and you automatically go to that. It's easy.
SPEAKER_02:I don't even know where while I was talking about.
SPEAKER_03:I don't, I don't, I think I do not believe Dabo loses his job this year. Go ahead, call her. You're on the air.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, Dabo said that uh he he hoped that they had built some credibility around there with all the winning that they'd been doing. Uh where's my crickets?
SPEAKER_03:Where's my cricket sound the sound effect? It's been a while since he won. That's not it. Uh it's been a while.
SPEAKER_02:That was it.
SPEAKER_03:Uh I mean, seriously, it's been a while since he won Big Big Games.
SPEAKER_02:Well, back then he had uh he had made that uh he had made that famous deal.
SPEAKER_01:You didn't know about that. I didn't know. Double made a deal with me. Way back in the day.
SPEAKER_03:I will give you a national championship for your soul. What about OU? Oh my good season. Yeah, they are having pretty good season. Yeah, I mean, I I was a little worried about Britt Vidables, but I think he's gonna make it.
SPEAKER_02:Uh oh, yeah, I I think so. Uh defensively, yeah. They just gotta figure out something on offense. Um that you know, because John Mateira is not gonna be able to play another season after this women.
SPEAKER_03:How happy were we that Lincoln Riley lost again?
SPEAKER_02:Yep. Now, if we can just get Sharon, I'm going to wear a utility jacket to the press conference because I'm a working man more. Hey. You know what? That that whole program's the biggest joke in the country. One of the sorry. Now let's eat some candy. Can we end with some candy? Well, I've got one more thing.
SPEAKER_03:Good. Did you all see that Lane Given was accusing somebody of stealing signs?
SPEAKER_02:Are you serious?
SPEAKER_03:I saw it on Twitter. Now, I hope it's not AI, but I saw it on Twitter that he said sub school was stealing signs.
SPEAKER_01:Oh boy. Speaking of AI, my son has a whole file.
SPEAKER_03:So your your great your father's grandson. Got it? Okay.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. My son Logan has a whole file of him with AI. And this AI, it's crazy. I mean, it even sounds like him, but there's one of them, him him doing a UK football press conference, and another one, him jumping off a trailer for tailgate, you know, tailgate day.
SPEAKER_02:The AI stuff's out of control. It's out of control.
SPEAKER_01:There's one of him and Logan Paul fighting a snake.
SPEAKER_02:When when uh when I saw Bob Ross taking on Bob Barker in a grudge match.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, no, no, the best one is not great. Have you seen the one of Mr. Rogers and Easy E drinking sane eyes together?
SPEAKER_02:What is this? Okay, this is Lion. This is a uh You've had this before.
SPEAKER_01:I brought Lion back from Italy.
SPEAKER_02:This is a candy bar from Italy.
SPEAKER_01:It's good. I like this one.
SPEAKER_02:It's got a wispy center.
SPEAKER_01:It's got nougat in it. It is nougat.
SPEAKER_02:A little Kit Kat, a little a little jeunesse quoi.
SPEAKER_01:I don't know either.
SPEAKER_02:Snickers.
SPEAKER_01:The chocolate's a little bit could be better, but I like the fluffiness in the middle.
SPEAKER_02:The chocolate tastes a little I'm gonna give this one a six.
SPEAKER_03:I'd eat it again. One bat, everybody knows the rules.
SPEAKER_01:I'd give it a four.
SPEAKER_03:I'd eat it again, but not I didn't love the texture. It's like a Milky Way to me. It's like the chocolate was like almost like stale on the outside. Yeah. Well, this was a Spanish one. What about one bat everybody knows the rules?
SPEAKER_02:I don't believe in that for a second.
SPEAKER_03:That guy's a joke. Well, I love it that he says one bat everybody knows the rules and then takes like seven butts. Dave Point Noy done his pizza review. He says one bat, everybody knows the rules and takes like twelve bats.
SPEAKER_02:This one's called Fondente Node. You do don't you do? Yeah, I don't. This is a this is a darker chocolate, 52%. I will not like it, I can tell you.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, I love dark chocolate. Make it 80%. Because you don't like bitter things. Nothing. I don't like vinegar or bitter. Nope.
SPEAKER_02:What's your what's your favorite year of a Corvette?
SPEAKER_01:I'm a C3 guy. Anything from a smell is great, man.
SPEAKER_02:You get the love of Corvettes and Corvettes from your daddy.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, that's good. What's it smell like? Blackberries. Uh-huh. Dark chocolate typically smells like blackberries. That's good.
SPEAKER_02:Creamy. Look, this is the same company that made the 10 from last week, the milk chocolate one.
SPEAKER_01:That's good. Whatever you want to do. I'm gonna start throwing that motivational quote out. Or do we want to do Tobola Rome? So this one are these the only two you got left? Let's say these two for next time. Same for these. And I'll start bringing mine over again.
SPEAKER_03:This dark chocolate one, and you know I don't like dark chocolate, but I can't taste it anyway, so it doesn't matter. It melts good. It does.
SPEAKER_01:Most dark chocolate is that way.
SPEAKER_02:Fondente Novi. I I'm gonna go nine on this one.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, I do a nine. I can't taste it. Melts good. I'm gonna start doing a motivational quote at the end of every one of our podcasts. Yeah, I'm down. Yeah. If someone calls you fat, just ignore them. You're bigger than that.
SPEAKER_03:Okay. Can I can I say is that the way they're gonna be every time?
SPEAKER_01:Well maybe.
SPEAKER_02:Can I uh can I add a dad joke then? Oh boy. You've already heard it, but it's a good one. What did 50 what did 50 Cent do when he was hungry?
SPEAKER_01:He ate.
SPEAKER_02:58.
SPEAKER_01:Ah, that's good. Yeah. What about my lunch yesterday? Uh greatest lunch in the world. Shock each. Should be.
SPEAKER_03:I didn't know that I didn't know that Jeff Ruby's run out of bags, so they had to go to White Coast and get some bags.
SPEAKER_01:That's all. Alright. Rod rack it up. Somebody's got to go take medicine and go to sleep.
SPEAKER_02:Oh, that's the wrong that's the wrong button. Uh I got too many buttons. See? Now I'm now I'm now.
SPEAKER_01:God, it's awful.
SPEAKER_02:That's it. That's the one we're looking for.
SPEAKER_01:Three guys around the table.
SPEAKER_02:College football. And but college football is the greatest sport. Um which obviously, you know. The football was born as a sport in the great state of Ohio. Did you know over at Bike Canton, which is very, very east of Kentucky has to be a big thing.
SPEAKER_03:Kentucky has kind of a real basketball exhibition game on Friday. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_02:How can I say east of Lyman get no reaction?
SPEAKER_01:Hey, can you guys call me a fellow now?
SPEAKER_02:Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Congratulations on your fellowship. Thank you. Yeah. What's that gonna do for me? Nada. Vote for me.
SPEAKER_01:Vote for me.
