There are multiple take aways from this lesson. However, the main ideas will be studied in four subtopics: Discernment, Stumbling Blocks, Traps, Fear and Faith (not necessarily in that order). In the beginning, Nehemiah did battle and building in a messy place; in his passion to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, nay sayers, assassination for hire, trickery and lies. All of this went on while in economic hardship due to a drouth in the land; people mortgaged their homes, sold their land, cattle, etc. to sustain life at a high rate of usury (interest). Yet, Nehemiah found courage to tell the people to believe in God who will fight for you. These men fought a fears fight from the early morning hours until late night for days without changing clothes, the Bible said. They held their weapons in one hand while building with the other. When I read this, it moved me into awe just learning about the tenacity these people had. the Bible said: "And the people had a mind to work." Unity is stoppable! The wall was finished in 52-days.
Going after purpose will always stir up the enemy. The closer he came to completing the wall, the more he had to fight off a multitude of people who didn't want to see Jerusalem restored.
