Speaker 1:

I just wanted to share with you one of my favorite parables. I read this one a couple of years ago and it was really impactful, so much so that I spent a good week and the next couple of months just kind of mulling over what it exactly meant for me in my life, and if you know my story, you'll know that I come from a corporate background and I was always in this pursuit of the next thing. So, moving from Dallas, where I grew up to New York City and then I decided to move into the public relations and marketing space and I had always imagined at some point I would become a CMO. But over time, just seeing the way that the space evolved and how stressed out people were, I really just kind of lost my interest in that. And when I finally became the VP of public relations for a PR agency in New York City, that's when my health really took a turn. And maybe you're in a similar place in your life where you're looking at the work you're doing and, yes, you might be paid very handsomely, but what's the real cost? And it is a parable that you might have heard before, but its message is timeless and it's especially relevant for those of us who are striving for both professional success and personal fulfillment. Now, since this isn't a hypnosis audio, you can certainly listen to today's episode without closing your eyes, but if you are in a place where you'd like to rest, you'd like to just listen, it's okay to do that too.

An American investment banker was taking a much-needed vacation in a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. The boat had several large fresh fish in it and the investment banker was impressed by the quality of the fish and asked the man how long it took to catch them. The Mexican fisherman replied only a little while. The banker then asked why he hadn't stayed out longer to catch more fish. The Mexican fisherman replied he had enough enough fish to support his family's immediate needs. The American then asked but what do you do with the rest of your time? The fisherman replied Well, I sleep late, I fish a little play with my children, take a siesta with my wife, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life.

Speaker 1:

Senor, the investment maker, scoffed I have an Ivy League MBA and I could help you. You could spend more time fishing. With the proceeds you could buy a bigger boat and the proceeds from the bigger boat would then buy you several boats until eventually you could have a whole fleet of fishing boats and instead of just selling your catch to the middleman, you could sell directly to the processor. Eventually you could open your own cannery. You could control the product, the processing and the distribution. Then the banker added of course you would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City where you could run your growing enterprise. The Mexican fisherman asked but, señor, how long will all of this take? To which the American replied I'd give it a good 15 to 20 years. But then what, asked the Mexican man? The American laughed and said Well, that's the best part. When the time is right, you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You could make millions, millions, senor. Then what? To which the investment maker replied then you would retire. You would move to a small coastal village where you would sleep late, fish a little play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.

Speaker 1:

Each time I read this parable, I'm struck by how accurately it portrays the rat race and the American ideal of success. No-transcript. We aspire to be listed in the Forbes magazine's richest people. We turn to social media and see influencers showcasing their lavish vacations and their fast-track journeys to success, with the promise that you can have this too, as long as you buy their magical $1,000 product. This is a conversation that we rarely have.

Speaker 1:

Beyond the relentless pursuit and the setting of our goals. What is it that we're really after? For many of us, it's this unconscious feeling that we're chasing. We want to feel abundant, free, significant. But here's the twist to all of this the peak of an emotion, that emotion that you've been chasing. It only lasts for a mere 90 seconds. So maybe another vital aspect here is to consider the value of living in the present. You know, we often are pushing out our joy and our happiness into the future.

Speaker 1:

The formula sounds a little like this when I achieve or possess X, then I will be Y, or then I can have Y. When I get that promotion, I'll take my kids on a vacation and spend quality time with them. When I win that account, I'll finally get some rest. What would happen if you choose those outcomes today? What if you chose to spend time with your kids? What if you chose to rest or chose to have a meaningful conversation with someone? What would it be like for you to enjoy your time, your life, right now? Because the truth is that we can find joy and pleasure and gratitude in the small moments of every day. So it's worth getting curious about what that looks like for you Now in the upcoming weeks.
