SPEAKER_01

From the fast lane to the thid lane. We got you covered for all things racing, where every lap is a chance to make history. With some of the talents you may know, and some trying to make a name. This is Fourth and Rect. And I'm your host, Matthew Rieger. Hello everybody. My name is Matthew Rieger. We are here, season four, episode one. We're going to do things a little bit differently this season. There's a lot of things coming up in my life, and trying to navigate a lot of schedules makes it very, very difficult, especially for what I got coming up. So uh I'm gonna be your only host this season. However, we are gonna have different drivers to jump on each and every single different week to get everybody's uh perspective rather than just me and my previous co-host, Dalton Pipgrass. But for our first introductory episode before we head to Silver Bullet this weekend, we got two guys that I think you guys should know them. Give it up for Justin Ward and Arley Cooper Jr.

SPEAKER_02

Hey Matt, how's it going?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, it's going good. Justin, welcome on.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, thanks for having us, Matt.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, anytime. First question I got out the gate. Who's ready for 2026?

SPEAKER_00

I'm just about ready. Just about just about ready. But other than that, we should be ready.

SPEAKER_01

That's great.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we'd say I'm I'm mentally ready, but maybe not physically.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we need to start doing these interviews because you you look a little um you look a little sweating.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah, I gotta get nerved up.

SPEAKER_01

There it is. There it is. It's all right. Break your break your nerves here. Cause um during this season, uh, I'm gonna be coming around and talking to everybody a lot more. So whether you do good or whether you do bad.

SPEAKER_00

So you're gonna get it's it's Cooper's year.

SPEAKER_01

I I really think it's Cooper's year. I really do. That is one of the questions we are going to reflect on a little bit later. Um but with the competition that we have this year, it's gonna be tough. It definitely is gonna be tough. I just what you guys got anything new for this season you want to let anybody know about?

SPEAKER_00

Well, Arlie, I think we got a lot of new stuff, don't we?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I mean, we got a few new things.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean, it's uh definitely uh picked up a I think we'll pick up a lot of speed this year, that's for sure. Um fresh motors, new motor, new car. Um made some changes. Get a little bit more grip on these dry slick tracks, and uh we'll see how it goes.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and I was uh just pulling through stats uh just a little bit ago. Uh Justin, when you first race with the Great Lakes Lightning Sprints at Silver Bullet Speedway, you put down of a lap of a 14-084. The last time you got even close to that was this last season. Are you trying to replicate that speed for coming to the first race of the season? Or what is what does prep look like for you guys, knowing that the competition is going to be to a new level, knowing that everybody's gonna be on their game and the best are gonna come out to the top?

SPEAKER_00

I mean, to be honest with you, Arla can verify and vouch for this, but uh, you know, it we don't change nothing here. Uh, you know, we spend a lot of time on the cars going through everything, making sure everything's done. Maintenance. I mean, you know, if we can do what we did the last couple years, you know, we're gonna we're gonna put it in the front, that's for sure. I mean, both of us will. You know, it's uh Arlie, you know, showed a lot of speed last year and in the top what top three all the time. I mean, pretty much, you know, it's I mean, we'll we're not gonna change nothing besides get faster.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, for sure. And I know Arlie, I looked at stats for you for Silver Bowlet Speedway, and you were like very consistent. You were one of the only drivers to make it into the top ten every single race that you've raced in. How does that confidence build? Um, looking forward to Silver Bowl, and again, knowing that the competition is going to be tougher and that you know you're gonna have to be on top of your game.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I mean, it's I'm I'm looking to do better this year. Um, it seems, you know, I've still been learning and running into small issues here and there, but you know, trying to put the work in in the garage and and uh you know a couple changes to the car, I uh you know, that to help me be a lot more consistent on not messing up. So um looking forward to this race. Uh, you know, I I felt like the end of the season came too soon last year because I was finally starting to really really get speed and uh you know a couple mishaps out there again at the end of the year. So um we're changing up a couple things like with my chain because I'm tired of losing a chain. I mean, that kind of cost me the race at the end of the year.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And I know uh you definitely are gonna have to minimize problems because I know we've talked about it all throughout the season. Um, Chad Listerman is coming back, Al Stanton is Jerry Napier is gonna be very strong. We got Jacob Shabai coming back. We don't know the type of speed that he's gonna have, and especially with his rookie year, uh he was blowing out numbers, you know what I'm saying? And we got a new guy, Grayson Thompson, he's gonna be a rookie. We don't know how he's gonna do. A bunch of these drivers went from their I think was it Chad Collie had a henchcraft, and now he's going up to a hyper. Uh Greg Burt, I know he went from a 600 and now he's jumping into an a thousand, so he's gonna have a lot more speed. So just the whole entire like series itself is bringing it to a new level, and I hate to say it, the the weaker gonna get filtered out, you know.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I mean, there's a lot, like you mentioned. I mean, there's a lot of good drivers. Whoever wins these races now, it's gonna be well earned, it's not gonna be go out there and just put it right out front and and run away with it anymore. I don't, I don't think. Um, I feel you know, a lot of guys have stepped up, you know, like you said, Jerry Dalton, uh Chad Listerman's a good driver, Jacob's a super driver. Um, so the competition's gonna be there, but you know, when me and Justin always talk about it, uh good competition is only gonna make you better when you're on the track.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_00

I think honestly, what it's gonna come down to is uh who bobbles first, to be honest with you, because I mean everybody's so fast, everybody's so quick, but I mean, there's a lot of wolves back there that are they're gonna be trying to pounce every chance they can get. And uh, you know, uh hopefully this year, um, you know, people stay clean driving. I mean, that's uh that's everybody's fear, you know. Um, you know, people throwing sliders uh when they maybe shouldn't be throwing sliders and wrecking cars and you know, um hopefully we don't see any of that this year, but you know, I I think it's gonna be uh survival of the fittest. And I I can tell you right now that the speed shop here with Arlie and I, I mean, we're we're coming. There's no doubt there.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, for sure. And do you guys bring any like expectations to the season, or are you guys kind of like at the point where like you expect disappointed so you don't get disappointed, you know what I'm saying? Or you expect disappointment so you don't don't get like disappointed for the season? Does that make any sense?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean for myself, obviously you know, winning three championships, it's gonna be tough to get a fourth, you know. But we're gonna try like heck. But uh, you know, where do you where do I go from here, right? I mean, you want to win every race, you want to go out there and still win, but you know, there's there's really I mean I'm out there to have fun. That's the main thing. Winning, obviously. Arlie and I talk about it a lot, you know. You're out there to win. Um but I'm out there to have fun too, you know, and and you know, with us, it's I think uh Arlie and I we tend to help out a lot of people in the series.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_00

If you look at all last year, how many times did Arlie and I save people from you know having to not race to racing? I mean, Arlie, we we spent a lot of time and money just on that aspect, you know. Oh yeah. You know, it's it gets to the point where you know if somebody's not helping, that's just one less car on the track. We don't want that. I mean, we want to see 25, 30 cars a night. That's that's our goal, right? I mean, because like you said, uh it's gonna it's gonna be tough. I mean, it'd be nice to start running B mains, that's for sure, you know, because that way it's pushing everybody to get better.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I will tell you the one race that we had was a B main was at Crystal Motor Speedway. I'm hoping to get the numbers up. We lost the Ericssons last year, uh, but the racing that we had was incredible. And I think we bring back the Ericksons, we bring back what Brody LeBaron, Trenton Huffnagel. Maybe if uh Derek, the the Hillickers, if any of them uh start running with us on a regular basis, we might have like, I don't know, a better count car count, and hopefully, like you said, Justin, more B mains, you know. Because that's more practice for me in the booth and more practice for you guys because hopefully you're not in the B mains, but that's more track time for the guys that need it, you know. And then there's more I don't know, you you you bring for more racing, you know.

SPEAKER_00

It's all about C time. You know, the more laps you get, the better you're gonna be. But I can tell you one thing, don't just expect to push your car in a trailer each week and then pull it out during race day and expect to go out there and win, because I it's not gonna happen.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. For sure. I know you were all getting fired up. We are. We are. It's it's a couple days away, and we know that. Saturday, Saturday, May 2nd, Silver Bowl and Speedway. Be there. Okay, gonna go with Arlie. Arlie, do you have any goals for this season for the 29 team?

SPEAKER_02

Uh my goal is gonna be to win a feature race. Uh, been chasing it for a while now. Um, and then, you know, of course, just make sure I'm out there having fun. Uh when you're out there trying to win, it's it's so easy to get upset and disappointed on what's going on. But you know, just got to be thankful for being able to be out there and do this. I mean, not not a lot of people are able to go and race, you know, they they just can't make it happen. So I'm I feel pretty fortunate to be able to go out there with a nice car, um, you know, great people and and uh just just have a good time. So um gonna try to keep a cool head this year and uh and uh get that checkered flag.

SPEAKER_01

For sure, for sure. And Justin, I'd like to ask uh what's your goals for the season? But you got what 15 wins, 15 feature wins, you got three of the last three championships. Like what does the goals look like for you more than just go to victory lane again?

SPEAKER_00

I just want to place for the top 10 each week.

SPEAKER_02

That's pretty much my goal. I thought your goal was gonna be uh to stay consistent.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, it is. I mean, we proved that the last three years. I mean, you know, since we switched to hyper chassis, I mean we've been we've been pretty strong, you know, every week. I mean, and it's not about how many races you win either. You know, it's you can you cannot win a race and still win a championship. I mean, it's been done. Um, is it fun winning? Yes. Uh is it a goal? Yes. But I mean, if if I'm inside the top ten each week having a good time, that's what it's all about, you know. Um you know, trying to get more people involved in in this sport too, you know. Um we got uh we got uh a guest coming to race for us a couple races this year, so that'll be what, are they the Ionia fair race in in Tri-City?

SPEAKER_02

Tri-City?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, Ioni in Tri-City. So uh he's he's gonna travel over what 1300 miles to get here. Yep. We got Christopher Bell, like to be to to to be announced, to be announced.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

So we'll leave it at that.

SPEAKER_01

I mean 1300 miles, where is that to? I need I need the radius. I start shouting names.

SPEAKER_00

Just put a string in a map and go about four inches outside of Michigan on a map.

SPEAKER_01

So Lima, Ohio? Sweet, Justin. When were you gonna let me know?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we're gonna swap, right? I'll announce, and you can you can drive.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, that works for me, but but we're gonna find out at the end of the night where we're meant to be. So me in the booth, you in the car.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. The main thing is going out there and having fun.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, it it is it is a lot of pressure, you know, running for points, and you know, it's it can get kind of uh a little stressful. I mean, but I I think uh Arlie and I have set ourselves up to where uh I mean if I junk a car, I'll hop in another one. If I junk that car, I'll hop in another one. I mean, and if I junk that one hyper's got two chassis on order, so I mean it's just uh go out there and have fun.

SPEAKER_01

For sure. Now, uh, I'm gonna throw a a wrench uh into the mix. Uh I know Arlie, you're good with wrenches, so I'm gonna throw this one at you first. Um, what are gonna be the biggest struggles for you for the season? And that's number one. Number two, what are your guys' thoughts about the new tires that we're running this season?

SPEAKER_02

Well, we're glad that it's kind of open, so we're we'll still be running Hoosiers. Um I I think the biggest thing is gonna be keeping the traction, keeping the car having traction. Uh, you know, most of these tracks we run, they just slick right off. So we uh you know, we've learned a few more things, a couple tricks to to put the power to the ground. So that'll be you know, that'll be the battle. Um, because if you're out there just blowing tires off, you're not gonna be picking up speed.

SPEAKER_01

For sure. Yeah. I mean, I I I'm gonna agree with you on that one because like I said, I've never jumped in a race car before other than yours. Um, but I didn't really have to need any grip or have to get a new set of tires. But Justin, what about you? Um, what are the biggest struggle struggle that you might approach for this season?

SPEAKER_00

The struggle I've had the last few years is you know, putting the power to the ground, you know, keeping the keeping the tigers wound up, keeping them from spinning. Um, obviously, you know, we're still gonna run Hoosiers. I mean, we uh to be honest with you, we've got we've got a good Hoosier deal going. Um and uh the only way that I would probably switch to American racers is if the lap times are increasing by a substantial amount. Um which obviously will make us faster, right? So I mean if that's the case, then we'll I'll think about switching. But I mean, I've got enough tires to to be honest with you. I've got enough to supply probably seven or eight drivers coming up. So um yeah, that's what we're gonna stick for now.

SPEAKER_01

It's gonna be have to be uh your backups for your backups for your backups for your backups, you know.

SPEAKER_00

We got plenty of those, okay, Arlie. Yeah, we do.

SPEAKER_01

Now um, so I know uh new team formed, LCA Motorsports, uh consisting of Jacob Shabai, Chad Listerman, and Grayson Thompson. Is JWR Speed Shop an official team?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, we have been for three years, right, Arlie? At least I definitely think we're a team.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I know you guys come to the track all the time, and I saw LCA Motorsports put up their uh team name and they created a cool uh Facebook page. And I mean, I don't know. I I just I kind of figured you guys were on the same team. You know, you guys live like this close to each other uh on a map. So yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean we we don't I mean we don't really post a whole lot, you know, uh on that aspect, but I mean social media don't win your races either. You know, being consistent does.

SPEAKER_01

For sure. Well we'll find out uh the first race of the season, uh what uh what gets you victory. Social media are consistency.

SPEAKER_00

So uh it's it's gonna be tough. I mean, that's there's no it's not denying that. It will you know it's uh great competitors. I mean, you can't leave anybody out, you know. Bill Dunham, Dalton, Arley, myself, Jake. Um I know I'm missing a lot.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, who uh I mean I got I got points right here. You got Chad Collie, you got Bobby Miller who's doing good, you got Jeff Miller who he just finished a seventh. So you guys are good there.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, and then you and then you got you know, is is Brendan coming back this year?

SPEAKER_01

So about that, um, I don't really care if I say it on my podcast. So I looked at that post. Uh, it was posted on April Fool's Day, so I thought it was gonna be like actual seriousness. Um, but if you scroll in to the the picture and it said scheduled to be posted on April Fool's Day, so it is a total joke. Um, so I'm glad that Brendan thinks it's funny uh to post it on social media, so but um no. Um, and I'm kind of glad because yeah, that w that we don't need that kind of negativity in our series.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. Well, with his dad retiring, you know, he's retired now for UPS, and I know they've been sharing the schedule and stuff now, so I would expect him to be showing up. Um another another another competitor, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I mean you know, we'll see how the how the third or fourth go around goes.

SPEAKER_01

For sure. We will. All right, somebody give me a random number.

unknown

Eight.

SPEAKER_01

Eight? Okay. Bill Dunham. He scored eighth in points. Uh do you guys think he's gonna finish higher or lower?

SPEAKER_00

He will finish in the top three or four this year. I think.

SPEAKER_02

I I would think he's gonna finish higher.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing. The one thing that plagued him last year um was didn't he break his wing like a couple times at Crystal? So he had to take a couple like weeks off. He was running top three in points for like the longest time.

SPEAKER_02

That was the wreck that he was leading the race there at Silver Bullet, wasn't it? Yeah, Silver Bullet.

SPEAKER_01

And uh that's what it was.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, lap lap traffic kind of got in his way, and he he made the decision to go high and he should have gone low.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I think what happened on it, Arlie, is the one car uh was trying to get off the track, and he didn't he he didn't go up high enough to get off the track. And Bill went up on the high side and he just kind of cut over, and Bill had nowhere to go. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Was it Chad Collie who his wing blew off a couple times? Was that last year, 24, or was that 25?

SPEAKER_00

I don't remember that.

SPEAKER_02

Sideboard, you're saying, right?

SPEAKER_01

Was it I I think it was because he had to route it. Yeah. Okay. I was I'm getting things uh we've been racing for so long. It's like getting mixed in my head, you know? Yep. So all right, Arlie, give me a number. Lower than twenty-two.

SPEAKER_02

Lower than twenty-two? Let's go thirteen.

SPEAKER_01

Thirteen. We got Kevin Millen. He had uh one season with us. Do we think he's gonna finish higher or lower?

SPEAKER_00

He'll finish higher.

SPEAKER_01

I think so too. I think uh uh the beginning of the season was kind of a rough start for him uh but he ended up picking up a couple top tens near the end of the season uh once he started to figure it out which is I feel like kind of how everybody is you have the long so long of offseason that you get into the the first race of the season and then you kind of don't know what's going on until you've done it for like five or six times but I definitely think he will finish higher um he's got the speed to he just needs to finish races you know he's got to be consistent yeah I mean to to piggyback off that you know it's when you got a new team that comes in and uh they don't know a whole lot about lightning sprints so if they do have issues they don't know where to go and you know Arlene and I always tell everybody it doesn't matter who it is I don't care if it's our our best competition out there if they need a hand you know within reason we're we're gonna help them out. I mean um and that goes for everybody you know if if somebody's new this year and if they're struggling with anything you know don't be afraid hesitate to contact any one of us I mean we're always here to help but I think that's one of the bigger bigger issues new teams come in they don't know what to do and they have a few ish issues and they get discouraged and you know it's it's easy to do yeah you guys were also once in their shoes who uh who'd you guys look up to when um you first started with lightning sprints I know arlie we probably looked up Justin but Justin who'd you look up to so back when I was in uh man what was this 2004 I think it was my wife's dad worked up at autowares I know right uh worked up at autowares which is auto value and he got free tickets to Merritt Merritt Speedway all the time and VIP ones and um ever since that day I mean it was we were always looking up to Dustin Daggett.

SPEAKER_00

You know it was like I think he was young at that time as well and it was just kind of cool to see him and his dad and I believe his uncle was out there racing and uh it's just I don't know it's I got the love for sprint cars and and uh forward I think uh four years after that's when I started racing.

SPEAKER_01

So oh eight man I was six yep you're young uh very much young but uh thanks for uh giving it away your TBA I knew I knew it I knew it to be your to be announced driver uh no it wouldn't be him okay that was my guess no no because I think somebody said they were gonna let him run their car at I-96 or I don't know maybe I'm just making things up it's been a long offseason we need to get get back to it get back to the grind well I mean if if we treat it like the full-size cars do you know if any one of them want to come and drive one of my cars um yeah I'll let them it's gonna cost them some money and a crash deposit you know it's just the way it is yeah right can you get that deposit back if you don't crash the car how much I don't know to be determined okay I mean you know I we have top notch equipment right I mean early what numbers out there I mean we've got over 45 50 grand into our cars each car you know I mean a rolling chassis from hyper and I can show you the paperwork it is 30 what was earlier 38000 uh mid 30s yeah yeah I mean it's they're expensive I mean we could go out and run a 410 sprint car for cheaper than what we're putting into these to be honest with you that's crazy non-wing of course in Michigan yeah you had to you had to specify it because I guarantee if it's in Connecticut you can't even get the sideboard for that price. Well I mean you go down to the USAC down in Indiana and Ohio and wherever else I mean them them guys got 80 grand into a motor crazy you don't need that up in Michigan though so I ran Nonwing a few times it was fun I know your first ever uh start at Silver Bullet Speedway was in a traditional sprint yeah sixth place you know what my next finish was you didn't start there's a lightning sprint sixth place I'm just going off what my race pass says so if I'm wrong in a non-wing sprint okay full size yeah I finished uh sixth in all three of them I don't like that number like I said I just I I pulled points from uh my race passing and that is one thing that I will say this year um is that when I do go and call out points I am gonna make a PSA to everybody that's listening in the crowd that these are stats that my race pass has you know I'm not going past 2021 so unfortunately Justin I know you got six championships but you only have three with the Great Lakes lightning sprints so yeah hey how many wins do I have uh 15 I think you gotta get it right 16 is it I I I haven't I need to update my stuff yes sir I still got four days we're good I'm chill yeah no in a lot of seconds I can tell you that yeah I know uh thanks Jake we're ready we're running out of time okay got less than ten minutes left gonna go with uh number four do we think uh the big man Arley Cooper Jr.

SPEAKER_02

do we think he's gonna finish higher or lower than fourth place I'd say higher you'd say higher uh yeah he's he should be he should be in the top three he's nervous I can I can look at him I mean he better come in first that's what we that's what we're chasing you gotta represent that aim yeah you do come on Arley speed shot so yeah we're hoping for higher this year that's for sure yeah for sure all right I got two more to do I'm gonna pick on Chad Kali uh tenth place do we think Chad Kali's gonna fish higher or lower than 10th place higher definitely I think with the new car uh it's gonna be a little bit of struggle trying to figure it out at first but once he gets the hang of it and starts clicking off those finishes I definitely think higher i i think he's gonna be do very well for him what's that i feel like it's gonna be a big confidence boost for him having a little bit nicer equipment you know he he's upgraded a bunch of stuff so there'll be that little bit of a struggle in the beginning of trying to figure stuff out but you know like Justin's mentioned before we're gonna be next to him kind of helping him out and and and showing him stuff to help him along the way you know we want to see him get that speed back that he he had in the beginning I know last year was kind of a weird year for him but he uh he's got it in him yeah for sure for sure I mean if you look at when he drove my at the time franken weenie car um what do you put down are they the second fastest time out there second or third I do believe so I mean he was he was Holland um so he's he's got it in him you know 100% i i think it's gonna be a standout year for him yeah for sure all right last guy on the totem pole do we think justin will go four in a row for championships or do you think he'll be dethroned by somebody else it's gonna be it's gonna be tough man it's to win another championship for four in a row I mean it's unheard of right I mean the competition I mean I know we still had competition last year but there's more stepping in and uh you know if we can keep doing what we do and that is being what consistent I mean it's all about finishing right you know hopefully there's no DNFs I mean you know uh yeah you just gotta stay clean drive smart uh finish races and and see where it falls you know it's um would I like to win another one yeah uh but it's gonna be tough I mean whoever wins that championship this year is definitely gonna earn it for sure I'm gonna be honest Justin I'm sorry but I got my dark horse pick in my uh back pocket and I think you will get dethrone this year um just to kind of shake things up a little bit so it'd be good for the series it definitely would be you know everybody wants to see Justin dethroned oh for sure they're all coming for me I got a target on the back that's for sure yeah but you know what do we do gotta prove the haters wrong oh we will no doubt like I said we'll find out like I said I got my dark horse pick in my back pocket um I think last year he ran really strong and um he's gonna have something to say for every single one of these wins.
