From the fast lane to the pit lane. We got you covered for all things racing, where every lap is a chance to make history. With some of the talents you may know, and some trying to make a name. This is Fourth and Rect. And I'm your host, Matthew Rieger. Hello, everybody. My name is Matthew Rieger. We are back here for season four, episode four, I believe it is. Now we are post-Tri-City Motor Speedway, and what a Friday night action it was at wow, at Tri-City. I I blanked out there for a second, but it was uh it was a great show. Uh definitely a lot of action packed and a lot of lap traffic, a lot to delve into from the for this entire podcast. But it was great. But we do have a special guest on the podcast today. He's never raced with the Lightning Sprints before, before this weekend, the driver in the No Limit Carts and Parts Extreme Indoor Carting, Cart Racing, CL trucking and excavating, Digitrace, BR graphics, number 21 to you. Welcome to the podcast, Grayson Thompson.
SPEAKER_01Howdy.
SPEAKER_00How's it going?
SPEAKER_01Um pretty good and you?
SPEAKER_00I mean, I'm doing pretty good. Now I have a question. Have you ever, I know you dabbled in karting. Uh have you ever done any like interviews or any type of podcast when you're in karting, or is this like your first taste in it?
SPEAKER_01Um, I mean, I've been like interviewed. That's about it on go-karts.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So you've never been on a podcast before, so is this your first?
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00Well, I will I wouldn't get too special. It's not. The fourth react is not that special. We're just we're just doing it, you know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00Going day by day. Well, first, let me ask you a question. How how are you doing?
SPEAKER_01Um doing pretty good.
SPEAKER_00Doing good? That's good. I will tell you, I just thought of this. Um, you're the youngest person I've ever had on my podcast. Just if that makes you feel any better. Yeah. I was gonna have a driver named Colin Sivia on my podcast, but um it was hard to get a hook contact with him over the offseason, so I wasn't able to have him on. So yeah, you are the youngest person to be on this podcast. So congratulations.
SPEAKER_01Thank you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, anytime. Well, I know my kid has never made a guest appearance. Yeah, he will someday. Someday. So uh yeah, how's it going? How is um are you still in school?
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah. I have like a week or two left.
SPEAKER_00Oh, what grade?
SPEAKER_01Uh seventh.
SPEAKER_00Seventh grade? You know what I was doing in seventh grade?
SPEAKER_01What?
SPEAKER_00I wasn't racing, I'll tell you that. I was probably I'll be honest, I'm not I'm I'm ashamed. I was probably picking my buggers, to be honest with you. Um seriously, it's seventh grade. You're now you're saying you're almost done with seventh grade, you're going into eighth next year?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Jeez, man, dating myself. When was I in seventh grade? What what year was that? 14? 14 or 15?
SPEAKER_01I was barely born.
SPEAKER_00When were you born? 12?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. 12.
SPEAKER_00That's that's ridiculous. That's see, this is like I've had a like a bunch of people on my podcast. I think the who's the older person I had. Um, oh, I'm gonna get in trouble for this. I wanna say I Mike Pipgrass. Uh, it's okay. Even if it's not him, I'll probably get eight from him either way. So yeah, I think Mike Pipgrass is probably the oldest guy I've had on my podcast. So, and now you're the youngest. So that's wow. What a wide range of people, you know, and then you got people like Jake in the middle, who's like what, 20, 20, 27, 28?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Is that right?
SPEAKER_01Something like that. I think.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. He's gonna hate me for it. He's gonna be like, man, I'm 29, man. What the heck? It's okay. Yeah, right. Now, how does it feel to have uh Jake and Chad as your teammate?
SPEAKER_01Um makes you a little nervous trying to hold the standards up to them, knowing that uh Jake's done really well for himself in these, and Chad's been doing really good himself also.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I will say I was thinking about this throughout this week, and I was gonna text you guys and reach out. Um, but your entire team every single year has won the rookie of the year. So Jake won it in what, 23? Uh List won it in 25. Uh I know Jeff Miller, he won it in 24, uh, but now you have the chance to win it in 26 and have LCA Motorsports all be filled with rookie of the years. But I don't know who you're fighting against.
SPEAKER_01Um, that was what I was also wondering. I didn't know if there was a rookie or wasn't another one.
SPEAKER_00Um, I think Brody LeBaron raced with us last year, so I don't know if that counts or not. I mean nobody new is in the season. You're the only new guy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Do you get it by default? No.
SPEAKER_01I guess I'm no.
SPEAKER_00I think there's gonna be more people gonna be involved.
SPEAKER_01I thought I was told by Jake that there wasn't a new person.
SPEAKER_00I'm hoping so.
SPEAKER_01I am too.
SPEAKER_00We need to get this car count up. I will tell you when uh when I first started, we had like 20, 22 cars a night.
SPEAKER_01That would be the goal.
SPEAKER_00Have you ever heard of the name Ericsson?
SPEAKER_01Um, sounds familiar.
SPEAKER_00So you the Ericsson family, they ran the mom, the wife, or the mom and the dad, uh got they had two kids, and then they had the grandpa. So there's five of them. Yeah, I think I've watched the video. Yeah, there's Chuck, Lindsay, Mac, Jake, and Bella.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's uh helps the car count a lot.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it definitely does, for sure. But I will tell you, with the uh the fewer cars that we've been having, we've been putting on some great shows. Uh last year was like some of the best shows I've ever been to. Like um with especially with the lightning sprints, you know what I'm saying? So yeah. I mean, even so far this year, like we've we put on some great shows, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I can agree with that. I've been watching a lot.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, unfortunately, there isn't much out there for lightning sprints. I I've been talking to Arlie about this. There isn't much lightning sprint content out there, right? If you look up the Great Lakes Lightning Sprints on YouTube, like they'll pull up a date back from like 22, you know what I'm saying? Yeah, that's the only unfortunate thing. But it's all right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I yeah, I didn't notice that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, anyways, let's go talk about Tri-City. What was your what was your thoughts?
SPEAKER_01Um, at the very start of the day, my thoughts were just trying to like finish the race and do better than what I started. And after practiced qualifying, um, well, the beginning of that was a little fun trying to figure out the clutch because I've never like really done that besides a race dirt bikes when I was younger, but that really didn't help much. Um yeah, just trying to even get the um clutch thing figured out was a lot because I was holding back the races and I finally figured it out later in the day, but um qualifying was really just in my best, and I did.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was kind of like uh figure it out type of moment for you. Was it ever was it nervous going out there? Because I know before uh last year we had hot laps and qualifying, so it was two separate events. Sorry, we had two laps, hot laps, and then like the two lap qualifying. Was it a little nerve-wracking knowing that like you have to jump out there and then you have to get straight to work putting down a fast lap?
SPEAKER_01Um, not so much nervous. I was I was ready for it, but I I didn't really have much expectations. Like didn't know what what it would feel like, nothing like that. So I just went out there and hoped for the best.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_01Kinda worked.
SPEAKER_00I know you outqualified Jake. I'm just kidding.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that was achievement. We were messing with him about that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah you gotta you gotta give him you gotta mess with him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was pretty rough day for him too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for sure. Definitely, um, if that last caution didn't come out, uh Jake would be celebrating victory lane, and it would probably be a whole different story for how this week played out, you know?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, uh definitely. Um we were all pre-bunned, but we we really realized what it was, and now we know a bit more about it, so we can actually work on it a lot better. Now he's stepped up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Now, growing up in karting, did you ever learn how to work on the cars with your dad? Or was it kind of like you're just a Kyle Larson figure that you you don't know how to work on, you just jump in there and drive it?
SPEAKER_01Um, no, not at all. I basically work on my cart by myself. Like when I need someone, my dad would help, but um, ever since my dad really like showed me what to do stuff, I I mean I literally do everything on a go-kart.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_01I've never really been like a fan of people that just get in there and drive. I feel like you gotta be able to do all of that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. That makes some that that does make sense. But I will tell you, I did watch a video that on Facebook reels. Um I'm I like working on my own cars, right? So like when you start to understand stuff about cars, you start to feel like your car's having problems. Like, if I was a happy-go-lucky guy and didn't think anything was wrong, I can be like driving down the industry and be like, oh, my car's fine, totally. So, like, does that ever I I don't know. I don't know if you've been racing karting long enough to know notice a problem before it's a problem, if that makes any sense.
SPEAKER_01Um, yeah, most definitely I can. Um I mean I've been I've been a Raxville a few times and you can you can tell when it's coming and you can feel it, the difference on a lot of things like that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Man. Now, did you get any wins?
SPEAKER_01Um, yeah, I have actually had a pretty fortunate few years here. Um this year we started off with um the month of January alone, we had I think three or four wins, and they were back to back to back. And then before that we had a few pretty good wins down south. We like to go to Kentucky and uh Ohio and places down south and Midwest regions, and we win a a good amount of them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's great. Now, do you keep track of how many wins you guys have? And do you have that number on you?
SPEAKER_01Um, let me check. I think it's as of this year, you think you mean?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, let me check here. I think if I remember this year, we really like stopped after fourth or fifth, I think. Because that's when we started working on the um lightning sprint deal.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um I think it was fifth or fifth one.
SPEAKER_00Fifth one?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm pretty sure. Fourth or fifth.
SPEAKER_00And you said that was this year or like is that all time?
SPEAKER_01This year. That was just this year.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay. Now do you have a stat of old time or do you not?
SPEAKER_01Oh shoot. Goat cart racing all time. It'd probably be close to a hundred.
SPEAKER_00Oh dear.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we went a pretty good amount. And I've only been racing goat karts for two, I think two or three years now.
SPEAKER_00Really?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, before goat karts, I raced dirt bikes.
SPEAKER_00Dirt bikes at what age? I haven't even rode a dirt bike in my life.
SPEAKER_01Um, well, I started out at two years old on a bicycle. I raced BMX bikes.
SPEAKER_00Are you two?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, two years old, I was on a pusher bike. And then I think when I turned four or five, I got off a BMX and went to dirt bikes. Um I was first in the state a few times. Um runnered up at Nationals on my 65, I'm pretty sure. Uh yeah, we were pretty good on bikes.
SPEAKER_00Brian, I don't even think like I even know knew how to ride a bike until I was like 10 years old. And you're telling me you raised BMX when you were like five?
SPEAKER_01Um pedal bikes, I was probably four, four or five.
SPEAKER_00Now, is that with I'm gonna sound stupid. Is that without training wheels?
SPEAKER_01Oh, I've never had training wheels on anything I've ever trained wheels.
SPEAKER_00Oh my word. Um this kid is what am I? Are you the next Kyle Larson, but you know how to work on your own stuff?
SPEAKER_02No. No.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Seriously. Because I'm trying to think of like when I'm growing up. Like I'm I I got a kid, his name's Zakari. And like we sometimes go on bike rides, right? And like we'll have trouble when we hit like bumps in the sidewalk, and he'll have like training wheels on. And my dude Grayson on this podcast is like, oh yeah, when I was two years old, I uh I did this. Oh yeah, when I was five, yeah, we were racing BMX. Oh yeah, never, never training wheels. Like what? What?
SPEAKER_01No, um, my dad really never wanted me on training wheels to begin with, and nor did I. I just always thought that they like kind of sucked because I I liked to like move myself on the bike.
SPEAKER_00Now my question is at five years old, do you even know what training wheels are?
SPEAKER_01Um like I knew what they were, but I didn't want them. Um we were racing like state-wise. So it was like you really didn't have an option about training wheels.
SPEAKER_00And I know, and I'm probably on a BNMX bike, they'd be looking pretty dumb. I I just I I've never actually I I know I've seen BMX races before. Um I just I I've never wow. I'm like blown away. I feel like I'm blown away every time I have somebody new on this podcast. They like tell me things that like is crazy for me to hear. I I I I don't know if you knew. I grew up in eastern Connecticut, um, a little small town in called Ledgard. Um, but the only racing that I had in my life was when I was 13, I believe. Or it might have been 11. Well watched uh 2012. Okay, I was 10. Uh it was 2012 NASCAR race, and that's I got hooked on a NASCAR. Didn't even know nothing about dirt until I got here in uh in Ohio. Yeah, didn't know I didn't know a dang thing about dirt until 22.
SPEAKER_02Crazy.
SPEAKER_00That goes to show how much like I'm yeah, and that was me at like 20 years old, and this guy at like two years old was this is like oh my so you grow up in different worlds, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Seriously. I mean I always grew up go-karting, you know. Are you good at asphalt go-karting?
SPEAKER_01See, my dad owns my mom and dad own a uh like rental facility go-kart track, and I'm actually probably like one of the best drivers there. But we really wanted to do asphalt and road course because my dad back in the day was a really good asphalt go-kart driver, and I just haven't ever gotten the chance to get to it yet.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, what made you pick the lightning sprints? Was it Jake?
SPEAKER_01Um, so we were going to do an asphalt late model, the CRA Jake's tour. And then we got approached by Jake because my dad is really close with Jake. He got Jake into racing, and Jake's like, hey, we were thinking about getting a new driver. What do you think Greg's gonna be interested in? We really thought about it, and we felt like it was time for us to step up, and we went and talked to Chad and Larry with Jake, and we really thought it'd be a good idea, so we thought might as well try it, and yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's awesome. That seriously is. Well, um we're glad you're here, uh, for sure. Um, I know this is just your first race in, uh, but after your first race, you know, you got a top ten, and it looks like you went sixth in the heat. What was um what was racing uh actually close to people like in your heat race?
SPEAKER_01Um the heat race, I'll be honest, I did get in my head. I was pretty nervous, and I I was nervous that I was gonna wreck people, and like I didn't want to do that. So I decided to start in the rear. And I didn't feel like gusty enough to pass anybody yet, so I was just trying to hang with them, but not like pass them unless I really was going to get it. And I really don't think I got it in the heat. I was up a little bit, and then I just kept getting in my head, and I let off the throttle and push up the track, and I I wasn't really I haven't gotten acclimated to it yet, so I didn't know what to do, and it wasn't wasn't my best, but for the first time out there I thought it wasn't terrible.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I I I mean, I'm just gonna be honest. If you put me out there when I was 13 years old versus you out there, um, I think I would have been the guy who DNS'd or who didn't even start. Yep, that probably would have been me. So don't sell I I'll tell you this is it's your first race, you're doing great for how you're doing, you know what I'm saying? Especially being 13 years old. We did have a 13-year-old that raced with us. Um, I mentioned him earlier, his name's Colin Sivia. He was, I don't know, he was like built different. He actually ran third at uh Crystal Motor Speedway last year to Justin and Bill Dunham. So he like beat like a lot of our guys. So I know that's like that's like super far out there, but I think he's right now racing midgets. I think I've seen, which is ridiculous. I think he's 14 now. But it's crazy, and like I said, you're doing great right now, you know. Don't sell yourself short, you know. There you got my major improvements, right? We're only three races in, we got 15 more to go, and you know, we got another Friday night race coming up at Mount Pleasant, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So like I said, you're doing great in feature time. What you only finished a lap down? I'd say for Jacob putting the pants down on the field, that was only a lap down, that's pretty good.
SPEAKER_01Um yeah, that was uh I think I wasn't doing the best before I really got it. And when I really got it was when Jake passed me. Um I was like something I just realized, I'm like, well, I should try and pick up with him. And once I see him like on the outside of people, I'm like, wow, I gotta try that. So I just held the crowd on the outside and try to jump nobody and try and pray. And I got around them, and I did. I moved up a lot. And we were eight when we finished, and when I looked back at it, we went too much back, but we were eight, and I was right up on sixth and seventh place, and I was really dang close to getting I think it was Jerry. I was right up on him, and I I just didn't have enough time. But it was it was really a progression learning race for me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_01Racing side by side like that really like showed you you have to be careful because in go-karts, I mean you can just ride right in that alongside of somebody rubbing them. You can't do that in these, or else you're gonna be off the track. And that was something I had to really like watch out for.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. May I be the first to welcome you to open wheel racing?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It's a very different uh and like I said, I can't really say much because I haven't really raced these lightning sprints, but I've been with them long enough to know what happens if you get really close. Um, one of the drivers in the field, he's an avid podcast listener, so he's gonna hate me for saying this. Uh, but he on a restart, we were at Silver Bullet, jumped into turn number one, went on the bottom side of uh Dalton, and jumped over his tires, like completely jumped over him, and I think he ended up getting past him. Uh, but the driver's Chad Collie, his nickname is Leapfrog, and I'm gonna hear about it. I I definitely am. Uh, but yeah, there's there's there's a lot of things that can happen, um for sure. So it especially keeping your distance, that's the one thing. Um if you want to go back, listen to a couple podcasts. I did say ask like what was one piece of advice you wish you'd gotten before you start racing, and a lot of the drivers gave a lot of good pieces of advice, you know what I'm saying? Like one of them was like try perfecting your line before you perfect speed. Another one was what would your like 12-year-old self think, right? Think of you were like what the lightning sprint says in your like 30s, right? And you didn't have any like racing experience, like how would your self back then feel, you know what I'm saying? About how you're acting now, you know what I'm saying? So there's a lot of a lot of growth, and especially being 13 years old, you know, you can take in a lot, you can learn a lot from just these little moments of racing, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um I was 30 and I was talking to my younger self, I would probably tell myself to not overthink everything that I do and just stick with what I feel like.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, seriously.
SPEAKER_01I overthought a lot of stuff in the heat, and that was what really determined why I was in the rear. Um, I overthought stepping on the throttle, letting off. I thought a lot about like turning the car, even, and that got me almost off the track a few times. So yeah, I'd probably say just to not overthink it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, absolutely. And like I said, all tracks respond differently. So, like Tri City for your first race, that was probably one of the better tracks because it's a lot wider, you can move around. Uh, Silver Bullet, I don't think you would have liked as much because there there wasn't really as much room, especially for the first race of the season, to move around. Um, we're coming up to Mount Pleasant. That one's got a little bit of racing room, and then we're going back to Silver Bullet, but because of the racing conditions that we went to there earlier this season, might be different now, so there might be a lot of room to move around. So it kind of just depends. Crystal, it's one of the best tracks for racing. Um, that one comes a little like multiple grooves, but yeah, just it depending on track, you'll kind of get to adapt, you know what I'm saying? So yes, sir. Well, you're fifteenth in points.
SPEAKER_01Out of how many?
SPEAKER_00Uh eighteen.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. Well that's not last.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_01Not terrible.
SPEAKER_00You're only three spots behind Jake.
SPEAKER_01I told him I was hoping to come for him this year, but I'm gonna try.
SPEAKER_00What's that?
SPEAKER_01I said I hope to like be close to him points, at least try and you know, some competition.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, it's gonna be tough. Jake's uh just Jake's gonna be one hard guy to beat this year. Especially Chad Listerman, he's up in third in points, so yeah.
SPEAKER_02But um Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Seriously. Mount Pleasant coming up this weekend. You excited?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I raced there on the bikes and I I remember a little bit of it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's good. That's good. Yeah, that is good, and I think um Mike Pipcrass will have like barbecue tokens so you can get some um some free barbecue on uh Friday night.
SPEAKER_02So that sounds pretty nice.
SPEAKER_00Push push over some room, make some room, because we're having we're having barbecue on um what's it called? Sponsored by O'Brien Barbecue. Uh that's what uh who's sponsoring on Friday for the free meals. So you are a driver, so you will get one of those tokens. So feel free. Also, for any driver listening, uh, Justin Ward, I think he's got 15 tires for sale, selling them for 125 a piece. So I think the Pipgrasses wanted some, Bobby Miller wanted some, but feel free to reach out to him. He's got some tires, stand-up guy, and um yeah, talk to him. So, yeah. Anyways, like uh I will tell you guys, LCA Motorsports did really good this week. Uh for sure. They really set the bar of how things are are gonna go out, you know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, um trying to look at it right now, but in the future, in the future where we all like kind of time-wise, I'm pretty sure Jake was first, I was second, and Chad was third, time-wise, not finishing wise, but I thought that was pretty cool.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you're talking about the uh Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Jake had fastest, I had second fastest, and Chad had third fastest. I thought that was pretty cool to see.
SPEAKER_00That's awesome.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you guys did. Wow, okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Wow, you got another lap ten.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that was the lap after Jake asked me.
SPEAKER_00That's funny.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Man, for your first race out, dude, what the heck?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, I was actually pretty excited with myself after seeing that. I didn't believe them. I thought they were joking.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I'm gonna be honest, I uh very first race out. I was kind of having a hard time believing it too. That's why I went and double checked. But he he is correct. Shabai on top, uh 13-532. Yeah, Grayson's 13-713, and then Chad Listerman 13729. So you guys were right there. How Chad got his best lap in the first lap.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he was rolling there.
SPEAKER_00He really set the bar. He was like, this is how it's gonna go.
SPEAKER_01So first, yeah, I'm seriously.
SPEAKER_00Well, like I said, we got Mount Pleasant coming up this Friday. So hope to uh hope to see you there. You going?
SPEAKER_01Yep, we will be there.
SPEAKER_00Okay. I was about to say I mentioned free barbecue, so you better be going.
SPEAKER_01I will be there now.
SPEAKER_00Right? And there's racing to go on, so yeah, that too. Yes, sir. Well, it was great having you on the podcast. Um, would love to have you on again. Uh, hopefully sometime during the off season or maybe during the middle of the season to have like a rookie chat, see how all the rookies are doing. So, but you're doing great.
SPEAKER_01So thank you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, absolutely. Well, thanks for taking the time to out of your day to jump on the podcast, and like I said, we'll see you Friday.
