tanyawilliams
Well hello everybody. It's Tanya and I'm back with another episode of the positively spoilt podcast and we're getting allah natural today because we're talking with Sherry Coopersmith and she is the top dog at poor and kind I pull the. And I love that term I since that's so that's so cute and we're going to talk about all things natural. So lots of natural remedies and stuff that we can do um, that's you know, better for our dogs so hey Sheri how are you I'm fantastic.

00:31.24
sherry
Good. How are you.

00:36.56
tanyawilliams
It's nice and hot here in sunny Brisbane today. So and we're we're a few weeks away from Christmas which is creeping up way too quickly. So sherry do you want to start by just telling people a bit about yourself and the business that you've got.

00:38.74
sherry
50 Very much. So.

00:55.30
sherry
Sure, Ah well I've been in pet care specifically dog care for a couple of decades now not to show my age or anything. Um I've done everything from training and behavior modification I've had.

01:02.90
tanyawilliams
Is.

01:10.97
sherry
Daycare centres done holiday care and training Boot Camps I've had grooming salons pretty much you name it I've done it. Ah some rescue and a not-for-profi in there as well. Um, the idea for the products um basically came about by.

01:19.61
tanyawilliams
Um, well you died of old.

01:30.83
sherry
Um, being ah very concerned about the condition of the skin of a lot of the dogs that were coming through the salon that was essentially where it started and I mean we're going back probably 20 years now when I started so.

01:36.33
tanyawilliams
Yeah.

01:46.83
sherry
There wasn't anywhere near um the range of products available that there is now but that was what's first started me thinking that there's got to be some better options out there because these poor little guys are dry. They're itchy. There. You know they're coming at him rashes they're reacting to things that they just look so miserable and uncomfortable I couldn't stand. It.

02:05.50
tanyawilliams
Yeah, and look that and that's the thing we've got so many preservatives and additives and chemicals and stuff in in food in products and all the stuff that we're buying for our oodles and and as owners we want them to be happy and Healthy. We want them to have the best life. And it's one of those things I think that you don't know what you don't know so a lot of the time we're listening to what our vets are telling us or other Healthcare professionals that you know whether they're groommers or whoever. Um and you know we're relying on them to go Oh okay, well obviously what they're telling us is is right? but obviously there's lots of different opinions. There's lots of different.

02:25.37
sherry
Yeah.

02:43.98
tanyawilliams
You know, different medical practices and and so forth and I think as owners it really is important that we educate ourselves around the different options that are available out there. Um.

02:53.53
sherry
Oh absolutely. But the problem is there's There's a complete lack of regulation in the pet industry which doesn't help so a lot of the bigger brands are very very clever with their marketing and very loosely used terms like natural.

02:59.67
tanyawilliams
Yeah.

03:10.50
tanyawilliams
Yeah.

03:12.11
sherry
Um, which when you look at the ingredients. Don't really mean a whole lot. But most people don't know how to read the ingredients so it it really leaves them pretty stark.

03:17.35
tanyawilliams
Yeah, we yeah and look I had that conversation in a previous episode with 1 our other guests we're talking about fussy eaters and she was explaining how to read dog like pet cat like pet food labels and I had never heard that before and some of the things that she was saying and the difference between this and this and.

03:29.20
sherry
Um, yes, yes.

03:36.55
tanyawilliams
And these are fillers and you like it was really eye opening and I think the same can probably be said for any sort of natural products because as as you said like you see the word natural and just go Okay, great. That's good for them which is obviously not always the case.

03:49.34
sherry
Yeah, but it's not that's exactly right? And what people need to understand is just because a product is quote unquote natural I E it's ah a substance that's derived from nature that that hasn't been significantly modified or process. It still doesn't mean that it's safe.

04:05.99
tanyawilliams
1

04:07.14
sherry
And it still doesn't mean even if it is generally safe that it's going to be okay, specifically for your dog if they've got sensitivities or reactive skin.

04:14.45
tanyawilliams
Yeah, true, very True. So Let's talk about ingredients and what is actually considered natural like I look at things and think well if it's going to last you know a long time then it's probably not too natural because I would think natural products aren't going to last. Too long whether it's whether it's food whether it's you know, grooming products and stuff like that. But I could be wrong, but so let's talk about what's considered natural.

04:38.79
sherry
Yes, and no yes and no look it really does depend on the um on the types of ingredients. Um, yes, a lot of products do need to use some kind of preservative system. But that doesn't necessarily mean. That they're unsafe or that they're not natural. There are a number of preservatives on the market that are um, deemed natural and even organic. Um mind you again that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be okay for a dog that has allergies and sensitivities. But um, in.

05:02.39
tanyawilliams
Here.

05:14.89
sherry
Speaking in general terms that they're generally considered fairly safe. Um, but what it's going to come down to is what stop what type of ingredients you're using. For example, any product that has water in it needs a broad spectrum preservative because otherwise you're going to have problems with mold. Um, usually it's within about a week if you're not keeping it in the fridge so anything with water in it. Any kind of spray um or your standard shampoo product um is going to have to have some sort of preservative to make sure that it's safe. Um, that being said.

05:36.81
tanyawilliams
Okay.

05:48.10
tanyawilliams
Here.

05:52.61
sherry
Um, there are a lot of other ways to do products which don't require preservative systems. Ah, for example, um, if something is in the form of a shampoo bar um or or something like that. Even though you're using water during the process of making it. You don't need a preservative system because the natural Ph level of the bar Once it's complete preserves everything and that's got it pretty much if you store it correctly. It'll last a year or 2 no problem.

06:21.61
tanyawilliams
Okay, Wow. Okay so what sort of natural like products are there like you know what sort of things are you using in your products that are natural that are good for our dogs.

06:37.40
sherry
Well with my product So That's pretty much every ingredient. Um I'm particularly fussy having had my own animals for a long time. Not just dogs um cats horses. Um and even farm animals in addition to. Um, animals owned by other people I've been looking after um I like to err on the side of Safety. So um, ah, don't use anything um chemical whatsoever I don't use any artificial products whether it's preservatives. Um, whether it's perfumes or colours or anything else. Everything's completely organic so to give you some examples of my kinds of ingredients. Um my base ingredients typically include things like um, unrefined shay and cocoa buses. Um coconut oil.

07:22.27
tanyawilliams
And he.

07:26.82
sherry
Um, we use olive oil and a lot of our products I'm a big fan of hemp seed oil I use ah certified organic hemp seed and a number of my products avocado oil. Um the list goes on and on.

07:30.44
tanyawilliams
Yeah.

07:40.72
tanyawilliams
Okay, yeah, so let's talk about some specific issues because I know with oodles they can get sort of skin issues. Um itchy irritated skins and stuff like that What sort of natural products can help oodles with.

07:52.35
sherry
Yeah, yep.

07:58.32
tanyawilliams
Things like skin issues.

07:58.36
sherry
I Mean there's a number of things you can do to help but the other thing to keep in mind is when you're talking about topical products. Are you products that you put on the dog's coat or skin. There's no magic bullet or magic pill. It's It's really only forms part.

08:09.92
tanyawilliams
Who.

08:16.94
sherry
An overall um treatment or I guess um preventative plan. Um, you really need to be looking at things like diet. Um, and what's going on in their environment as well. Um, which which is ah a good rule of thumb for all dogs but particularly dogs that have sensitivities. It's really important.

08:26.80
tanyawilliams
Um, yeah, he adds now. Yeah.

08:36.61
sherry
To be working with your holistic vet or a kine naturopath or a canine nutritionist um to make the diet um as healthy as possible gut Health is super important. Um, ah I'm not sure how many dog owners are actually aware of this but um. More than 70% of a dog's Immune system actually resides in the gut. So yeah, yeah, it's pretty staggering. It's actually the same with humans funnily enough. Um, but um, so it.

08:59.84
tanyawilliams
Oh Wow I No a d.

09:12.14
sherry
It just goes to show how quickly a little tummy upset can lead to all sorts of other problems. Um, because you know you you may not just be um, causing Runny Poos or having upset stomachs and things. But it can also lead to problems with their immunity against other illnesses and diseases as Well. So That's another really important thing um to maintain That's why products like pre and probiotics um are really really important. Um, a lot of things that you can do naturally to really strengthen the gut and the Immune system which is also a great preventative for skin issues which are generally a sign that suck things out of balance in the body. Anyway, it's It's very rarely just about the skin.

09:57.40
tanyawilliams
Um, Okay, so if they I mean obviously that makes sense that there's all these different factors that contribute to something like that. Um, what sort of products would you suggest? Um, ah. Good types to start with for oodles with some sort of skin issue.

10:16.15
sherry
Um, good and regular grooming for a start? Um, ah I would definitely suggest. Um I'm a former oodle Oda myself I had ah a beautiful standard labradoodle. Um some years ago. Ah absolutely the the biggest chocolate Teddy bear.

10:27.84
tanyawilliams
Oh yeah, ah.

10:33.82
sherry
Um, and like a lot of oodles which I saw in the salon. Um, particularly if you've got the true oodles that um are ah are either no shedding or extremely low shedding. You've got to make sure that you're grooming them regularly.

10:44.54
tanyawilliams
Yeah.

10:49.59
sherry
Um, if you're not able to brush them often enough keep the coat a little bit shorter because um, a found with Bailey's coat anyway he had a lot of it but it was super fine and you looked at it sideways and he formed mats. So regular maintenance was really important.

11:01.70
tanyawilliams
Yes.

11:06.94
sherry
And as soon as you start to get behind with that because you're not getting enough air getting to the skin because you're may be not getting enough brushing to help remove danda and dead skin cells and that sort of thing you can very quickly end up with dry skin and other issues underneath the coat and if you're not grooming regularly. Very hard to detect so that's a really really important 1 making sure that you're brushing regularly and seeing your groom I regularularly um in terms in terms of products. Um, again, the sort of things that are that I used um was.

11:28.92
tanyawilliams
Ah.

11:33.32
tanyawilliams
What what about products So like what sort of products. Yeah.

11:43.94
sherry
And anything that was natural anything anything that was that was non-toxic anything that didn't have a lot of chemicals. No parabens. No s suphates no petrochemicals just as gentle as you can possibly get. Um.

11:56.28
tanyawilliams
So something with like coconut oil and avocado oil and those types of products.

12:02.80
sherry
Those types of things are great but you also need to read the rest of the ingredients on the bottle. Um, because um, those ingredients are are certainly fantastic, but you can still you can still be causing harm.

12:18.21
sherry
Depending on what else is inside that bottle. Um, so certainly look for those kinds of ingredients. But if you're looking at a lot of chemical names or anything in anything that um, anything that looks like it might be a sulfate or a petrochemical Google it.

12:19.26
tanyawilliams
Brought.

12:35.85
tanyawilliams
Has a.

12:36.12
sherry
That's what I used to do just cut cut and paste the name of it off their website or whatever you've got and Google it and have a look and here's a really good rule of thumb if they're not freely listing their ingredients on the package arrow on the website. Don't buy it.

12:49.22
tanyawilliams
Right? Oh yeah, well yeah, you want them to be upfront transparent for you? yeah.

12:52.64
sherry
If they're not prepared to tell you upfront. What's in it personally I wouldn't trust it. That's why we're very transparent and we list absolutely anything and everything on all of our labeling and the website and all the product descriptions.

13:05.39
tanyawilliams
So when we're reading labels when it comes to those sort of natural products like that particularly when it's like a skin issue What sort of ingredients. Do we want to see on those labels.

13:17.44
sherry
Well, the sort of things that you want to see um you basically it's like when you're looking at food labels in a way you want to see the nice healthy ingredients upfront in the list because they tend to be listed in order.

13:31.50
tanyawilliams
Yeah I yeah.

13:33.39
sherry
Um, similar to the way they do things with food so you want to see good things you know like like coconut oil and olive oil and all of those sorts of things. Um herbs can be really really good as Well. Um, anything like camemomile Collejula Marshmallow root. Um, there's a whole range of different things that are really really good. Um, look for those sorts of ingredients. Um, and the other resource that you can actually use if you're finding it a little bit hard to um, work Out. What's what with your ingredients. There's an American company that makes similar products to mine. They're called 4 leggers. Their website is four-leggers.com Um, they're formulated by a canine herbalist. Um, as our mine but what they've done. They've gone even a step further and they've actually formed.

14:15.57
tanyawilliams
This is.

14:27.90
sherry
A database for pet owners which is linked right on their homepage where you can actually look up any ingredient you find on any bottle and it will give you a breakdown of what it's used for and what. The side effects might be and they will tell you in their opinion whether they feel it's safe or not.

14:46.46
tanyawilliams
Oh That's handy. Yeah, Um, so let's talk about I suppose oodles with anxiety now often you know people defer to medications and so forth and we know that there are lots of reasons. Why. Um, dogs get anxious and I've spoken about this on a previous episode as well. But are there any natural products that can help with anxiety issues in our you know dogs.

15:10.35
sherry
There are absolutely um and look there are there are on occasion going to be extreme cases where the natural options aren't necessarily going to work and you need to look at something more traditional. Um.

15:20.96
tanyawilliams
Me.

15:23.59
sherry
For me I look at that in more of you know on a case-by-case basis If it's a real emergency and the dogs really suffering or nothing else has worked. You might need to look at that. But the sort of things that you can at least try in the meantime there's topical products you can use like essential oils.

15:32.77
tanyawilliams
Here.

15:43.32
sherry
Um, and balms that you can give them massages with or put on the pulse points that can help calm them down. There are also um treats now. Um and supplements that you can give to them or things that you can add to their food that are really really good as well. Even.

15:45.47
tanyawilliams
Oh listen.

16:01.35
sherry
Everyday foods turkey for example, is good for anxiety. It's got tryptophan in it.

16:05.66
tanyawilliams
Yeah, yeah, and and isn't um is it hempoil as well. It's good for anxiety. Yeah yeah.

16:10.33
sherry
Absolutely whether it's hemp seed oil or even the hemp seed meal um is very very good. Not just for the gus and for overall health and skin and coat. But it's also great for anxiety. Absolutely.

16:24.60
tanyawilliams
Oh awesome, What are any other suggestions for that other foods. Ah.

16:29.29
sherry
Oh There's a whole range of different things. There's different herbs. Um that you that you can use. Um that are also very Good. Um, a couple of examples. Um Lemon Balm Um valerian. Are also very Good. You can just growing them up and and put a pinch in their food and they can be really helpful. The other things that you can do that are relatively simple at home is um, just good old camomile tea or green tea as long as it's caffeine. Free.

16:45.31
tanyawilliams
You.

16:58.74
sherry
Um, make up a cup of tea and um, put a little bit over their dinner. Um things like that can absolutely help. Um.

17:04.66
tanyawilliams
I would never have thought of that I would never have thought of giving a dog any sort of tea. Wow yeah.

17:09.67
sherry
Oh yeah, as long as it's caffeine free and as long as that's one hundred percent and not mixed with anything else. It's absolutely fine. Um, I've done that before or with camemo meal. You can even just sprinkle it straight in the food. Um, that's fine I've done that with dogs and with horses. It's great stuff. Um, and there are other foods. Um, that are probably just lurking in your cupboard or in your fridge that are that are actually really really good.

17:20.28
tanyawilliams
Um, when.

17:23.50
tanyawilliams
Yeah.

17:28.79
tanyawilliams
Um, Wow they go would need us for.

17:38.40
sherry
As well. For example, anything that's high in antioxidants leafy green veggies, blueberries sweet potatoes another one too. Oh mine, Go absolutely nuts for a good pumpkin and sweet potato mash. They will eat that without meat. Even.

17:42.63
tanyawilliams
Yep, Blueberries stuff like that. Yeah yep, yeah, my dogs love Sweet potato. Yeah yeah, oh yeah.

17:56.71
sherry
Oh oh yeah.

17:57.20
tanyawilliams
It's um, and um and it's good for so many things isn't it. So yeah, Okay, what about um, sort of about allergies. So I mean I suppose that's similar to to you know, itchy skin or something or something but you know are there certain things that are really good with helping with allergies like from a natural product's point of view.

18:15.22
sherry
Ah, ah absolutely I mean the more reactive the skin is the more back to basics you need to go with anything you put on them. You need to keep things as organic and and as gentle as possible. Um, but again, that's ah, only part of the problem. Whatever you put on the skin.

18:21.50
tanyawilliams
Is it I.

18:32.93
sherry
Is going to help alleviate the symptoms. But if the if the problem itself isn't diagnosed and treated um, internally um, it's going to keep recurring so it all it all goes back to diet.

18:36.19
tanyawilliams
yeah and Tony yeah yeah and I think that's a really good point sherry that's a really good point because I think often we think oh, it's a skin issue therefore it's an external issue but often what's coming out externally is always.

18:48.52
sherry
No no.

18:55.45
tanyawilliams
Something that's happening inside the body and I think we need to remember that when we're thinking It's not just one. It's there's something going on elsewhere that we need to be looking at as well.

19:03.64
sherry
Absolutely right? And the and the other thing too. I mean if it's if it's not ah if it's not a food allergy or a problem with the with the gut or something going on with their Immune system. It can also be an environmental allergy something they're coming into contact with in the backyard or on walks that they're reacting to.

19:17.16
tanyawilliams
I Mean the using.

19:20.60
sherry
So if you don't get to the source of the problem if you can't um you know, minimize exposure you're going to have ongoing problems. No matter what you put on them.

19:26.83
tanyawilliams
Ah, yeah, it's um, speaking speaking of dogs but the moment I've got a couple of puppies downstairs who you might be able to hear because they're having all sorts of fun, barking and playing and of course they always want to do that when I'm recording a podcast. So.

19:43.39
sherry
Yea, why wouldn't ye.

19:44.72
tanyawilliams
Apologies to everyone if you could hear that barking gog on they're having with lots of fun down there. Um, so I want to get back to gut health as well because the the figures that you and that you mentioned before are huge um and I know there's a lot of talk about what that for humans as well. But what sort of things.

19:56.49
sherry
Yeah.

20:04.10
tanyawilliams
Should we be feeding our dogs or giving our dogs to help with gut Health which is ultimately going to be helping with you know some of these other issues that we're talking about as well.

20:13.29
sherry
Absolutely Um, the number the number one is a really a really good quality probiotic that's going to make sure that you've got a good balance of good bacteria in your gut.

20:17.82
tanyawilliams
Okay.

20:25.90
sherry
To counteract any? Ah, any of the negative stuff. It makes sure that the lining of the gut stays nice and strong. It helps to prevent problems like leaky gut. It also helps to boost the immune system which gives them greater protection against all sorts of of illness and disease. Um so a good prootic. Probiotic is so is absolutely number 1 in my book.

20:46.52
tanyawilliams
I Just buy them from like like we can buy like like little probi tablets or something I've never heard of a probi probiotic for dogs. Okay.

20:55.50
sherry
Ah, that they're everywhere now you can get you can get them in different forms. A lot of them are simply powders and you'll just take you'll just take a small amount and sprinkle it on their food once a day. Um a lot of a lot of the big brands like big dog and canineceuticals.

21:00.86
tanyawilliams
Spring for the book. Yeah yeah.

21:11.31
sherry
Um, ah are doing them now. Um, but that's a really really good one for overall health. Um, but there are other foods that you can add to their diet um as well. Um, that help boost the gut health um banana particularly green bananas or green banana powder is fantastic.

21:28.85
tanyawilliams
Ah, okay, yep.

21:30.47
sherry
Excuse me, you getting some background noise here as well.

21:33.80
tanyawilliams
No I can't hear here on your and I can hear just mine my dogs downstairs barking I I couldn't do this every trialer we're all good. Yeah yeah.

21:38.56
sherry
Well, that's a odd I'll just want to send me trailer past me ah um, berries. Ah you mentioned blueberries before blueberries raspberries anything high in antioxidants is really good. Um.

21:50.10
tanyawilliams
And home. Yep.

21:52.61
sherry
Sweet Potato is great for the guck because it's full of healthy fiber pumpkin as well. Um carrot as well. It's Anti-inflammatory again. Nice and fibrous.

21:56.60
tanyawilliams
Yeah, yeah.

22:04.26
sherry
Um, the other sorts of things that you can add that are also good is yogurt but it needs to be a natural yogurt. Are you no added sugar like a natural greek yogurt or you can give them Kefib which is really really good as well. Similar similar product but um, much much higher.

22:13.45
tanyawilliams
Are you great dog get yeah yeah, ah yeah.

22:23.29
sherry
Um, in probiotic strains. It's more power than yoghurt. No, it's a human product that you can give to dogs and it's it's in the same section in the supermarket as the yogurt but it comes in a bottle sort of like a milk bottle but it's really thick. It's like a pourable yogurt.

22:24.13
tanyawilliams
Um, is that ah the human thought that you buy to give to them or is it a dog I've never heard of it.

22:36.31
tanyawilliams
I move. Yeah.

22:42.88
sherry
Sort of a consistency. It's yeah, it's really good stuff. My my my guys are on it regularly. But um, my girls on a double dose of it at the moment because she's finishing a course of antibiotics. So so yeah and they absolutely love it.

22:45.50
tanyawilliams
I'm going to go and have to find some of that that sounds more brief.

22:58.87
tanyawilliams
Would' see I love that So I mean most of these products it sounds like a lot of them. We can get from supermarkets like the Kefer and the yogurts and the berries and you know all that sort of vegetables and stuff I imagine that most of the others we can get on various.

23:06.90
sherry
Yep.

23:12.67
tanyawilliams
Online stores are there any that are really sort of hard to get that you need to buy from sort of specialty health food places or any of that sort of thing. So there's a couple you've mentioned I'm like I haven't heard of that. Um, and I'll never come across it in a supermarket so you know can we find most this up pretty easily.

23:20.18
sherry
No yeah, most most things you can get from the supermarket. Um, it's I mean the only things that you might have to go to a pet store for. Would be say you probiotics. But I mean you can either order those online or you or you can go go to your local pet store and and pick them up fairly easily.

You don't want you don't want to feed whole hemp seeds or any other seeds. Not that it's going to hurt your dog. But it's not Bio. It's not Bioavailable. So it means it's really going to go in one end and out the other and their body won't be able to get the full benefit of it The health aisle The Health food aisle.
