Tracy Collins [00:00:05]:
Hi, and welcome to the Global Travel Planning Podcast. I'm your host, Tracy Collins, who with my expert guests will take you on a weekly journey to destinations around the globe, providing travel inspiration, itinerary ideas, practical tips, and more to help you plan your next travel adventure. Hi. And welcome Hi, and welcome to episode 33 of the Global Travel Plan and Podcast. Now this week, Doug and I are here to talk all about our trip to Los Angeles, which we took in, September. So only, last month, beginning of September when we flew from Brisbane to Los Angeles for a few days on our way to London. And we thought this would be a really good episode, not only to talk about Los Angeles and what we did, which would appeal, I'm sure, to some of you if you're living in in the US. But, also, if you're listening from Australia and considering this is a different way to go back to the UK if you're going over to Europe on holiday, this is something that we decided to do was to go via LA, and we had a good time, didn't we?
Doug Collins [00:01:10]:
We really did. We're it's just an incredible journey. Yeah. It was a lot of fun.
Tracy Collins [00:01:16]:
It was. So I thought this might be useful kinda, as I say, to talk about what we did, how it went. Unfortunately, we had planned to actually arrive on Sunday, 1st September, and then leave on the Thursday, 5th September to fly to London. But, unfortunately, our flight was canceled at quite late notice on a Sunday, wasn't it?
Doug Collins [00:01:40]:
It was. Yeah. It was really unfortunate. It was, canceled due to a bird strike, which we can't do a lot about, really.
Tracy Collins [00:01:46]:
No. So and, unfortunately, we had got an upgrade to business class on that flight. We'd we'd put a bid in, and we won it. So it was a bit chaotic on the Sunday actually managing to get a flight. It took me most of the day to be able to make sure that we could get on the flight on the Monday evening, And I did send an email to our accommodation in in Hollywood, which I'll talk about in a second. But it did put a little bit of a damper on it. So so what was intended to be a 3 and a half full day itinerary ended up being a 2 and a half day itinerary. But I still think, honestly, it'd be worth sharing what we did because if we're planning a short stop off, these are some ideas.
Tracy Collins [00:02:25]:
Whether you're gonna fly on to Vegas or drive to San Francisco, whatever you're gonna do after you land in LA. So should we talk about the accommodation first? So I was very keen on staying in Hollywood because I actually had looked at what I wanted to do over those few days with there. And so it was choosing a base that was ideal to be able to get to, the things that we had planned. So quick overview is we were planning to do the Universal Studios Warner Brother tour and a day in LA tours, which we've done previously on our on our previous trip to LA, but we wanted to do it again because it was a bit of a refresher, and you get to go to all of the main places. So the hotel I chose was the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, which was lovely, wasn't it?
Doug Collins [00:03:11]:
It really was. Steamed in history, and lots of famous people stayed there. And, you were very, very excited, I have to say.
Tracy Collins [00:03:19]:
I was. So if you're not familiar with the Hollywood Roosevelt, I'm sure if you live in in California, you will be. But, basically, it was opened in 1927, and it was, basically a brainchild of Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, among others, who, of course, were massive stars in the 19 twenties. The hotel was named after president Roosevelt at the time, and it was opened at a time when kind of the cinema was or movies were changing from the silent film to talkies and things were about to take off. So actually in in 1929, it was where the first Academy Awards were held, which is fantastic. So May 16, 1929 in that building, the first Academy Awards were held. So, historically, it was just fabulous. Also also, I was gonna say it is where some famous people such as Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Montgomery Clift, some fabulous names that stayed.
Doug Collins [00:04:14]:
And I must say in the hotel itself, they've got a fine balance between the modern and the old and the classic, and it was just presented so perfectly. It was you can feel the ambiance of the place, I thought.
Tracy Collins [00:04:26]:
Absolutely. So it's supposed to be haunted, but we didn't see any of the ghosts, apparently. Marilyn Monroe is supposed to to haunt it and also, I believe, oh, I'm trying to think of the actress. Can't think of the top of my head as well that's supposed Carole Lombard maybe is that's also supposed to but we didn't see any evidence of that.
Doug Collins [00:04:45]:
Well, I wasn't yet a tell you booked.
Tracy Collins [00:04:48]:
Oh, no. Really? So the the hotel's located in Hollywood. It's on Hollywood Boulevard. It's, you know, near the, Walk of Fame, so near the Chinese Theatre. So, honestly, we highly recommend it. So that would be the first thing that I would say. We did organize a pickup from the airport that took us to the hotel. I'm not sure that the driver was a 100% familiar with the hotel, because he did struggle a little bit to find it.
Tracy Collins [00:05:14]:
But we eventually got there, and we checked in, unfortunately, 24 hours after we were supposed to actually check-in. I had emailed the hotel a number of times to let them know that the flight had been canceled but we were still coming just in case they canceled our booking. But they didn't. Thank goodness. But they didn't really acknowledge that we hadn't arrived the night before, so that was a bit strange. But but, otherwise, the room was quite small, what we booked, but it was it was really nice. Room service was excellent because we got in more tired, and the guy from room service was so friendly.
Doug Collins [00:05:43]:
He really was. He was excellent. Yeah.
Tracy Collins [00:05:45]:
So other things that are notable about the Hollywood Roosevelt is it's got a wonderful swimming pool. So that's all I'm gonna say, but it's absolutely beautiful, lovely swimming pool. And, honestly, after a day out in LA, you that's exactly what you wanna do is sit around the pool and relax.
Doug Collins [00:05:58]:
Most definitely. Yes. It was a lovely pool.
Tracy Collins [00:06:01]:
Okay. So our intended itinerary had been on day 1 is that we would go to Warner Brothers, and we're gonna do the classic kinda Warner Brothers tour and and followed in the afternoon by the TCM tour, which you were really excited about when you do.
Doug Collins [00:06:15]:
Oh, well, I love the classic films. I really do. And, yeah, I was quite disappointed we couldn't do that.
Tracy Collins [00:06:20]:
Yeah. So, unfortunately, we had to cancel that, but I did do a little bit of kinda rearranging, and we did manage on the Thursday to do the general regular kinda, Warner Brothers tour, but we'll talk about that a little bit when we go through get to to the day 3. So the first day we we got there, obviously, was the evening time on the Monday night, so we didn't do much. So we also knew we had an early start the next day because I had booked us the VIP experience at Universal Studios, which is not cheap, but is amazing.
Doug Collins [00:06:53]:
Oh, it really was. Absolutely. It really was a VIP day. Yeah.
Tracy Collins [00:06:57]:
Yeah. So the advantages of the VIP day is that, basically, you have a guide who's who goes around with you in the day. He takes you to the rides. He can hold your bags if you've got bags. You get first onto the rides. There's no waiting at all. You literally get whisked straight on. It was a hot day, so we just reckon you know, it really was hot.
Tracy Collins [00:07:17]:
It was a steaming hot day.
Doug Collins [00:07:20]:
It really was. And one thing I will say as well, even though this is a small group, there's no actual pressure to go on every single ride. He did ask for volunteers, anybody who's not going on this ride, and there was no obligation to go on any everything if you didn't want to.
Tracy Collins [00:07:37]:
Yeah. That's true. Because I'm not I get a bit claustrophobic, so some of the rides were not for me, which is absolutely fine. He would explain all about the ride, what was involved with the ride, you know, and if there was gonna be an issue, there was no no problem actually just hanging around, which is what I did on a couple of the rides. Before we actually met our guide, though, one thing we didn't take advantage is that you do get parking on the day that you you know, if you have the VIP to valet park, it's included. But because we got an Uber to, Universal Studios, we didn't need that. And that was really easy with the Uber drop off as well because that's a short walk to the entrance. Yep.
Tracy Collins [00:08:13]:
But what we did have was breakfast, which was lovely.
Doug Collins [00:08:16]:
Oh, we did. Yeah. Such a great choice of variety. And, obviously, being a hot day as well, made sure we got plenty of drinks, to do want to dehydrate.
Tracy Collins [00:08:26]:
Yeah. So that morning, basically, we went off with our guide and we went all over the park to try the different rides, which was really good. I think the first place that we went to was oh, how come they got off the top of my head now? It was, oh, the game. The, oh,
Doug Collins [00:08:43]:
Mario.
Tracy Collins [00:08:44]:
Mario. That's it. Yeah. I couldn't think then. Yeah. Mario World, which was really quite cool, so we went on that one to start with. And then a number of other kind of roller coasters. The log flume or the is it the, Jurassic World? That was excellent.
Tracy Collins [00:08:58]:
That was probably my favorite.
Doug Collins [00:08:59]:
And and while I will say that the guy that took us around, he his enthusiasm was just unlimited. He's he really loved his job, didn't he?
Tracy Collins [00:09:10]:
He did. He was brilliant and, kinda just, yeah, gave us so much information and really looked after us. You know, you really did feel like a VIP. It really was an amazing experience. And then we had a lovely lunch.
Doug Collins [00:09:24]:
Yes. That's right. Yeah. You met Dracula. I seem to remember.
Tracy Collins [00:09:28]:
I did. I did. I was having lunch, and Doug's face changed, and I kinda looked up, and there was Dracula on my shoulder. I looked at me. I was like, oh my goodness. Because, yes, you do get the you do get the characters kinda walking around, which was which was really cool as well. And then in the afternoon, we did the backlot tour, which was the absolute highlight for me.
Doug Collins [00:09:48]:
Yes. We really enjoyed that. Yeah. Yeah.
Tracy Collins [00:09:51]:
So you get to do the studio tour of the backlot. You also get if you're doing the VIP, you get to see the costumes and the props. So we had a walk through that large kinda big, hall. I don't know what you'd call it. A big kinda I don't know. Like a Yeah. Big shed.
Doug Collins [00:10:06]:
Yeah. Oh, yeah. The the props. And then we also did the, the water show, the water world, didn't we?
Tracy Collins [00:10:12]:
Oh, we did. Yes. We managed to fit the water world show in, which he hadn't been sure if he could, but he did manage to, to fit that in, which was really good. I highly recommend that you go to see that. So we saw that, and then, yeah, we did the backlog churn. And the advantages if you do the VIP is that you can you get out of the cars and you can actually walk around, which was amazing.
Doug Collins [00:10:36]:
Yes. Yes.
Tracy Collins [00:10:37]:
Yeah. And he was kinda
Doug Collins [00:10:38]:
really special.
Tracy Collins [00:10:39]:
Yeah. And he was pointing out where different films were made and then how they kinda dress the sets and what they can change on the sets. And, also, I thought it was quite fascinating because there's a cinema in the backlot, and that's where famous people, even now today, will go and take their children to go and watch any movies that are out because they can't go to regular cinemas because they would get bombarded by so many fans. So they all go to the back lot of Universal and to the cinema there and watch the movies.
Doug Collins [00:11:09]:
Yeah. That's right. Yeah. I I forgot that part. Yeah.
Tracy Collins [00:11:12]:
Yeah. So I thought that was pretty amazing. So, basically, in the morning, we're in a small group, and then, after lunch, we joined up for that backlot show with a with a larger group. So I think there was probably maybe 2 groups put together, then we went off in the little kind of trolley car that you'll have seen, and then we went around the backlot. Obviously, we saw jaws, and we saw like, a lot of it I remembered from last time. Yes. But it was it was really it was an excellent day. We finished the day.
Tracy Collins [00:11:41]:
I would say it was probably it must have been about half before 5 o'clock. It was a full day.
Doug Collins [00:11:46]:
It really was a full day. Yep. Yeah.
Tracy Collins [00:11:48]:
Yeah. So that was honestly, I would highly recommend it. There were quite a few people there whose children it was obviously the birthday, so it was a big birthday treat. Were we the were there any British people on that Yeah.
Doug Collins [00:11:59]:
I was your lads are British. The lads were there.
Tracy Collins [00:12:03]:
That's right. That's right. So it's only, I think, maximum of 12 or 13 on that. So I can't remember the exact number, so you'd have to check on the website. But I highly recommend it. I'll put a link on to where where we booked it. I booked it through Get You Guide because which is useful, actually, because, obviously, I was concerned when things got canceled that especially that because that was expensive, like the flight. I was like, thank goodness we included that on the Tuesday, not on the Monday because, obviously, that would have been a lot of money to have to have lost and, in fact, to claim tried through our travel insurance.
Tracy Collins [00:12:32]:
But luckily, they organized that for the Tuesday. So I would recommend, if you're planning to do something as expensive as, like, the VIP day at Universal, don't make that for the 1st day that you fly into Los Angeles, especially if you're doing the flight from Australia where it's a long flight just in case. You know, it was a bit of a freak incident that happened that ended up with our flight being canceled, but that didn't mean that I was panicking thinking, oh my goodness. Am I gonna be within the 24 hours to cancel and get my money back? So that was one thing to consider. So that that was our Tuesday. That was a full day out, and then I think we we just went back and, relaxed at the hotel by the pool.
Doug Collins [00:13:10]:
Well, we did. Yeah. Took it easy and went out for a a local meal just off the walker frame there. It was a small place. It was lovely. Yeah.
Tracy Collins [00:13:17]:
Yeah. We did. And then, then the next day was our, basically, our last full day, which I was really sad about because, honestly, I'd wanted to spend a few more days in LA. So the next day, we did a day in LA tour, which we've done previously. We did this on our previous trip to Los Angeles and really enjoyed it.
Doug Collins [00:13:33]:
We did. That's why we did it again because we enjoyed it the first time immensely. So we decided we're gonna return and do it again. And I must say, because we where Peter arrived outside the hotel, the initial guy had picked us up, the initial guide, he was absolutely full of beans. His enthusiasm, his drive was just so engaging. So anybody first meeting it in a little group will know what to mean when I say everybody's a little bit quiet and a little bit reserved. Not for long on this one. He bought everybody straight out of the shell, didn't he?
Tracy Collins [00:14:04]:
He was great, and he stopped because we had to go down downtown LA to kinda meet the main boss, and the the other people on our tour. But he stopped off along the way, and then we got out and had photographs taken. He was full of life. I wish I could remember his name because I would like to give a big shout out because he was fabulous. He was he was so much fun and such a good laugh, and everybody was laughing, enjoying it by the to the end of it. It was great. And, he we we were hoping we had him all day, but we we ended up kinda having we waited. I think we had, like, a a a toilet break, and then we had to wait for, like, the main buses to get on to.
Tracy Collins [00:14:42]:
They're not big. There's still not massive a massive amount of people on the tour, but we were kinda given our bus number, and we had to wait, say, I think it was maybe about 10, 20 minutes, something like that before everybody else arrived. And because we were staying at the Hollywood Roosevelt and because the the tour start in downtown LA, we had to everybody has to kinda get to the central the same place to start the tour, which was really good. But so the first place we headed to was Venice Beach, didn't it? Or did we go to Santa Monica Pier first?
Doug Collins [00:15:11]:
We went to the Pier first, didn't we?
Tracy Collins [00:15:13]:
Yeah. Yeah. So we had to walk around there, looked at where the Forrest Gump seat.
Doug Collins [00:15:19]:
Oh, that's right. Yeah. Yeah.
Tracy Collins [00:15:21]:
Yeah. Had a walk around there. So I think we had sort of 20 minutes, half an hour there, and then we headed down to, Venice Beach was our next stop. Muscle Beach, I think. Is it down that that direction?
Doug Collins [00:15:32]:
It's all down that side. It's just further down than the pier, isn't it?
Tracy Collins [00:15:36]:
Yeah. So we had a walk around there, and then we drove into, Beverly Hills itself and Rodeo Drive, and oh my goodness, how the other half live.
Doug Collins [00:15:48]:
Yeah. Yeah. We when we had the guide the the driver, guide given us the commentary of where some sort of famous person lived and and died.
Tracy Collins [00:16:01]:
Yeah. It was really good. And then, we had a we had a walk around Rodeo Drive, got a, had a drink. I think we met a couple of other Australians actually who were walking around, so we took some pictures. From New Zealand? Oh, was it from New Zealand? That's right. I remember. And, yeah, we so that was brilliant. And it is yeah.
Tracy Collins [00:16:18]:
That was again, it was an it was a very, very hot day, so stopping off and having a drink. They do do provide drinks actually on the day in LA too in a in a cooler at the front so you can grab water when you need it.
Doug Collins [00:16:30]:
Plenty of fluids. Yeah. Yeah.
Tracy Collins [00:16:31]:
Yeah. Which is really good. So then after that, we went to the farmer's market.
Doug Collins [00:16:37]:
Oh, for lunch. That's right. Yeah.
Tracy Collins [00:16:38]:
Yeah. Farmer's market at The Grove. Now the last time would be this is gonna be so funny, but the last time would be I got some brussels sprouts with bacon, which just I love brussels sprouts, and I was desperately looking for the the fried brussels sprouts of bacon, and I couldn't find them. Well, what was the did have a nice lunch.
Doug Collins [00:16:55]:
Entire market. Sorry? We walked around the entire market three times just in case we missed it.
Tracy Collins [00:17:01]:
Yeah. We still couldn't find them. But we did have a nice lunch there, which was good. Yeah. And then, I think we'll stop there for about an hour if I remember rightly.
Doug Collins [00:17:09]:
Good hour. Yeah.
Tracy Collins [00:17:11]:
Yeah. And then you can look around the shops as well because there's a shops at the back. So so that was a nice little walk around.
Doug Collins [00:17:16]:
Tram as well there that wouldn't stay on.
Tracy Collins [00:17:19]:
Yeah. So, yeah, you took some videos and some pictures of the tram. So that was a nice stop. And then after that, we head up to the the Griffith Park and the Observatory
Doug Collins [00:17:27]:
Yeah. Yeah.
Tracy Collins [00:17:28]:
To see the Hollywood sign.
Doug Collins [00:17:30]:
Yeah. Great views. It was a nice, clear day as well, which is really nice.
Tracy Collins [00:17:35]:
Yeah. And, I think seeing just seeing the Hollywood sign is something that I'd always wanted to see my entire life. So the last time we were in Los Angeles, I remember kinda just going, wow. I can't believe. As somebody I was I was a massive fan of kinda 19 fifties Hollywood and Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood, and it was just amazing seeing this sign that it just represented so much. So even this time, seeing it for a second time, I was just like, oh my goodness. It's a Hollywood sign. It's amazing.
Tracy Collins [00:18:02]:
Yeah.
Doug Collins [00:18:03]:
And I like older films than that. I like the thirties and forties films.
Tracy Collins [00:18:07]:
Yeah. I do. Don't yeah. Yeah. You're a black and white, movie fan. So then we we had a little look around the observatory itself. Before then, we headed back down to the Chinese Theatre and the Walk of Fame, which just happens to be where our hotel was. So that was brilliant.
Tracy Collins [00:18:21]:
We didn't have to go anywhere at the end of the tour because we were literally dropped off outside our hotel.
Doug Collins [00:18:28]:
We did, and we did have another walk up and down the hall of fame. The wall of fame? Time we walk up every time we walk down there, we find some ones we missed before, don't we?
Tracy Collins [00:18:37]:
Yeah. We did. I managed to find Robert Wagner. Don't know if I found Natalie Wood this time. I'll have to have a look through my photos. Obviously, there's a lot in front of the Chinese Theatre. You've got a lot of the handprints and the footprints as well. So, you know, I did my kind of starstruck moment, having a look around there.
Tracy Collins [00:18:52]:
But the advantage again of where we chose for the hotel, staying in Hollywood was about knowing the itinerary that we're doing, is that, a, for Universal Studios, it's very close by, b, for a day in LA tour, I knew that we would be dropped off at the end of the tour just outside the hotel. And believe me, you're tired at the end of the day, and it was fantastic. We just went straight in and then straight. We were around the pool within about 10 minutes.
Doug Collins [00:19:16]:
It probably wasn't even 10 minutes. Yeah. Yeah.
Tracy Collins [00:19:19]:
So that was brilliant.
Doug Collins [00:19:20]:
Cocktails, weren't you?
Tracy Collins [00:19:22]:
Absolutely. I definitely was. And then I'm trying to think then the Thursday. So we we're flying out. We didn't need to leave the hotel until about 3, I think, 3 PM on the Thursday. So because we'd lost out on our 1st full day at universe not universal, Warner Brothers, I decided that we'd do the Warner Brothers tour instead. So I I've canceled that and rebooked that for the Thursday morning. Again, not too far from our hotel by Uber, which we found really easy to call.
Tracy Collins [00:19:52]:
That was never that was never an issue. Picked us up right outside the hotel.
Doug Collins [00:19:56]:
Yeah. We did a done, a late checkout at the hotel, which made the
Tracy Collins [00:20:02]:
Yes. We did. We organized a late checkout because it'd just be easier than because especially because it was really warm still, that, you know, you didn't want to be hot and sweaty, get back, and then go to the airport. So we did arrange a late checkout. So we did the Warner Brothers tour, which was which was okay. I I it probably I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it. Yeah.
Doug Collins [00:20:23]:
I don't know why. Which one's a little bit flat, I thought, particularly in comparison to the Universal Studios.
Tracy Collins [00:20:32]:
Yeah. I think it was interesting. I think and it was good to see where so many things that I had enjoyed, you know, movies wise or series wise were filmed. And I'm glad I did it because it it was always high on my list of place to go, and I managed to buy some friends, memorabilia for my daughter who's a massive fan. And I think I think if we go back I think do the TCM show would definitely be on our agenda. I just think it probably it wasn't as I don't know. Not as exciting perhaps as the universal, but then it was a completely different experience.
Doug Collins [00:21:08]:
Was. I I I used the words, I thought it was a little bit flat, and I thought that at the time I commented at the time, nothing against anybody doing it. The I just don't think there was that level of enthusiasm that was displayed, to the Universal Studios, but no no complaints. There's nothing wrong with it. It was it was fine. Yeah.
Tracy Collins [00:21:26]:
Yeah. It was good. It it it was what it was. And I think, you know, it's worth doing if you're a Warner Brothers fan, definitely go. I mean, just seeing the just having it just being there, I think, is is amazing and seeing where things have been filmed. And, obviously, they are still they're using it still as a to to record stuff. So yeah. So it it was good.
Tracy Collins [00:21:47]:
And, obviously, it's it's it wasn't I can't remember the the cost of it. Well, we we were lucky that we got we got tickets to go on the the so I think it was 9:30 on the Thursday morning. I kinda was quick to make sure that we did that. And then I think that was about 3 hours. We got back to the hotel with enough time to get ourselves sorted and then checked out, and then we just booked an Uber back to the airport, didn't we?
Doug Collins [00:22:09]:
We did. Yeah. Yeah. It worked out well. We're we're washing in the morning either. So it's
Tracy Collins [00:22:14]:
No. Because I had thought about having a day by the like, morning by the pool. What is it what I had intended the Thursday to be. But at least having some flexibility meant that we could move the Warner Brothers tour to the to the Thursday morning and not feel that we'd missed out. And as I say, it was one of those, tours that I had at the top of my list and had not done last time. So I'm really glad we did it. I'm really glad that we spent even even though it was only two and a half days in the end in Los Angeles, I'm really glad that we got to spend the time there. And, actually, I'm really looking forward to come back.
Tracy Collins [00:22:44]:
I wanna explore far more of it. So, I mean, if you're listening to this podcast and you live in California and you live near Los Angeles, tell us what we need to do next time. I want ideas for a for a further itinerary. Ideally, we'd like to go out to Vegas and explore around that area as well. But this is what we fitted in for LA. So if you're living in the States and thinking you want a a few days in Los Angeles, the this is the sort of itinerary that I would suggest. We it was really good, especially if you're a Hollywood fan or, you know, a day in LA tour is a fantastic way to kinda see the highlights of Los Angeles. And you don't have to worry.
Tracy Collins [00:23:17]:
You picked up from your hotel, dropped off, you know, your hotel. So that makes things a lot easier. I'm just gonna check the list to make sure that your hotel's in it covered. But, yeah, I mean, it's a really good so it's a good way to get a kind of taste of Los Angeles. And if you're living in Australia and thinking about doing this as a great hop off to get to Europe, I'd highly recommend it. We we enjoyed it. It was a it was I felt refreshed before getting on to the flight to, London.
Doug Collins [00:23:42]:
Yeah. Most definitely. Yeah. It's a good stopover. Yeah.
Tracy Collins [00:23:45]:
Yeah. So I think that's it. I think that wraps up kind of a cover a little bit of a chat about our trip to Los Angeles. If you've got any questions or you want any of the links to the hotel, tours that we booked, they'll be in the show notes at globaltravelplanning.comforward/epistode33, so you can check those out. But until next episode, that's, a bye from me and a Goodbye from me. Until next time. Happy global travel planning. Thank you for joining us on this episode of the Global Travel Planning podcast.
