The Biblical Leadership Show
Your Team Follows Your Example More Than Your Words
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Gossip, ego, and criticism can quietly set the tone of an entire workplace, and most leaders don’t notice the damage until trust is already gone. We open Peter’s words in 1 Peter 2 and bring them straight into modern leadership, where “malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander” look a lot like break-room rumor, passive-aggressive emails, and people protecting themselves instead of the mission.
From there, we talk about growth as a daily leadership choice. “Grow up” is not just spiritual language, it is a practical call to keep learning, to train others, and to become the kind of employee, manager, or executive who raises the bar without tearing people down. We also explore the “living stones” picture and what it teaches about belonging, especially for remote teams that can feel disconnected even when productivity looks fine. Small habits like short check-ins, intentional one-on-ones, and consistent appreciation can rebuild connection fast.
The turning point is identity. When Peter says you are chosen and you belong to God, it raises a leadership question: who gets to define you? Critics, competitors, and disappointments are loud, but if they name you, they control you. We close with integrity under pressure and the challenge to lead by example, because people will follow your pattern more than your words.
If you want biblical leadership that is honest, practical, and rooted in character, hit play, then subscribe, share the show, and leave a review so more leaders can find it.
Welcome Back And Series Roadmap
SPEAKER_02Alrighty, welcome, welcome, welcome. Hey Tim, how you doing?
SPEAKER_01Hopefully that's not your new introduction.
SPEAKER_02No, I guess not.
SPEAKER_01What's going on, Dr. P? Not too much today, but it's so good to be back in the studio.
SPEAKER_02So good to be back.
SPEAKER_01So good to be back. It's awesome. It is so awesome. Episode 131 of the Biblical Leadership Show. 131. Thank you so much for our loyal listeners. And if you're here new today, find us uh out on the podcast world. Thank you so much. Um, I am Dr. Dean Posey, who admit with me today is Mr. Tim Lance. Yes, and we're excited to bring you this episode today. Let me give you a little background, and that is um we have been going through the Bible, and we started this almost three years ago. Uh we've been going through the Bible, and um uh two years ago, we started literally through the Bible in the book of Genesis, talking about each book of the Bible and the leadership principles that are found in each book. So we started with Genesis, and now we're in the New Testament in the book of 2 Peter. Um and some books we can go through in a week. Uh other books like this one we're on right now could take several weeks uh because there's so much content to it. And several weeks. Several weeks. And so last week we thought we'd get at before the show, doing our show prep, we thought we'd get through uh chapter one and two, maybe three. Well, we got through chapter one. But if you're not familiar with uh who Peter uh was and his contribution to Christianity and to the ear history of the early church during the first century, I just suggest that you go back. If you didn't listen to episode 130, go listen to that and then um listen to the whole episode, give you a little background on who Peter was. And we had an incredible story about Admiral Nemitz and giving people second chances. And so Peter's a perfect example of that. Admiral Nemitz was a perfect example of that, and uh so now we're on chapter two, um, and we're moving forward to the big episode 150. Moving forward, moving forward, gosh, we've only got 19 more to go, and that's uh it's gonna come up, gosh, right around uh New Year's Eve. Which we love New Year's Eve show.
SPEAKER_02If you're not familiar with New Year's Eve, it's all dad jokes.
SPEAKER_01It's all dad jokes.
SPEAKER_02Because we're usually sitting on a beach somewhere, so we go have fun right before we leave town. So it's that's always good. I don't know how you can be better than that.
SPEAKER_01So as we prepare for our New Year's Eve show, if you have any dad jokes, it doesn't matter if they're good about it, please send them to us because I only have I'm down to about 750 dad jokes right there.
SPEAKER_02But we always use some good ones. We get a lot of submittals over that time, and people submit them in there because they know that they're actually gonna get uh you know put on the air for sure. Because we we we're gonna use them that we will please give us some good ones. We go through a lot of them, a lot of them. We we burned through a lot of paper, a lot of books. So
Dad Jokes And Catching Up
SPEAKER_02yeah.
SPEAKER_01So speaking of dad jokes, before we get to dad jokes, yeah, here we go. Do you have dad jokes? I did. Okay, so a cowboy left Montana to go back to Texas on Friday. Okay, okay, and he came back, he came back to Montana on Friday. Now, how did he do that?
SPEAKER_02The same Friday.
SPEAKER_01No, a week later.
SPEAKER_02I was like, well, I mean, that was pretty tough. Um, I do not know. His horse was named Friday. All right. Well, there you go.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so what do you call an escaped owl?
SPEAKER_02Oh just asking. Uh I don't know. Hoodine. I knew it was who something. I just couldn't remember it.
SPEAKER_01We have two owls around our house somewhere. Now, our back fence neighbor has an owl house uh up in one of her trees. Um, so we hear them every so often at night, and we know there's two of them because they make different sounds. I mean, we see her one on one side of the yard, the other on the other side of the yard. Owls are just incredible creatures. I mean, just incredible. And if you ever seen one fly, they are so stealth. They just and they're gone. I mean, yeah, wow.
SPEAKER_02They've had them at my place at the bird feeders. I see them at night. Look out, you can just see them over. I've had a woodper a woodpecker that's been coming and hanging out. Yeah, well, that's cool. That's pretty cool to see them out.
SPEAKER_01We have a red-headed one that goes on our bird feeders every so often. Yeah, and they're just cool birds.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Woody Woodpecker.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there we go. Okay, here we go. A dog kept chasing people on a bike. So I took his bike away. Then he just sat there in the yard and barked all day. So I gave him his bike back because his bark was worse than his bike.
SPEAKER_02When do you stop at green and go at red? I don't know. When you're eating a watermelon.
SPEAKER_01Oh. That's true. Watermelon's like great. Okay, what's a dog's favorite instrument?
SPEAKER_02Trombone. Yes, trombone. There you go.
SPEAKER_00Awesome. Good job. Yeah. Got any more?
SPEAKER_02Um what did the sushi say to the bumblebee?
SPEAKER_00Sushi. I didn't know sushi could talk, but go ahead. I didn't know. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Why did the Clydesdale give the pony a glass of water?
SPEAKER_02Uh don't know.
SPEAKER_01Because it was a little horse.
SPEAKER_02All right, I got one more I'm done. Then we'll get to the Bible. What's the first thing the taxi driver said to the wolf? I have no idea. Where, wolf? Where, wolf.
SPEAKER_00All right. Okay. Yeah, we should have stopped before. Yeah, that's all right.
SPEAKER_02We're on a
Cutting Gossip And Growing Up
SPEAKER_02roll. So here's what we we have chapter our first book, um, um, first chapter there, right? Um, Peter's writing letters, right? He's writing the letters. He's writing letters, he's he's he's sending everything, um, you know, living in hope, uh, tested faith, right, prepared minds, all that. Love one another. Yeah. So chapter two, where where do we take us? Where's where's it to take us into this? It this this starts getting into what I considered like how you should act in public, sort of deal, or is it sort of that where he's trying to go with this?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but also with one another. Okay. Okay. And so um well, let's just talk about the very beginning of chapter, really starting with verse five, chapter two, verse five.
SPEAKER_02What are you trying to finish this chapter in this one?
SPEAKER_01Well, well, let's just start at verse one then. Um it says, rid yourself of all malice and deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01So I'm just gonna throw it out. You might not be the leader, you might not be the CEO, but let me just ask you, how many times have you heard all of those kind of things around the water fountain or in the staff break room? Yeah, or the gossip. I tell you, gossip destroys the uh companies so quickly, destroys people so quickly. And so I would say if you're a part of that, that is showing a lot more about your character than the person you're gossiping about. And it just destroys things. And so, so I just say you need to be a stopper to that, you know. So if there's any like he's saying here, any malice, deceit, hypocrisy, evil, slander. Well, slander, that's all gossip is a bunch of slander.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so he's saying you gotta stop it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's saying if you want to grow, certain things have to be put away, right? You you know that, and that's leadership. Growth, growth requires subtraction in a way, right? And uh, you know, you can't build that healthy culture while while feeding it um all with the unhealthy thoughts and and speech and deeds. I mean, that's you're not gonna grow that healthy culture, you know, and it's it's just not gonna work from a leadership standpoint.
SPEAKER_01No, and it just won't. And so let's just move on. Now let's uh focus on some of the words um of this. He says, like newborn babies, this is verse two, uh, crave pure spiritual milk so that by it you may grow up in your salvation. So let's just not talk about the salvation part, let's just talk about those two words, grow up. Right. Um, and and so I would say whether you're the leader of the company or just an employee, how are you growing in your knowledge of what you're doing? I mean, are you are you learning stuff uh on the job? Are you training other people? You know, I learned a long time ago one of the best ways to learn your skill even better is to teach someone else how to do it. Right. Uh, because then you're like, oh, I want to make sure the quality doesn't decrease with my teaching. And so um it's just like, how are you growing as a leader? How are you growing as an employee? How are you growing as a manager? Um say, well, we don't have any um we don't have any online classes for my company, we don't have this. I'd say search something out uh for leadership. There's so much good stuff out there. Uh search something out and and then learn how to can I apply this so I I am a better person in my company. Regardless of your position, uh I think a good employee and a good leader is always learning more and how to do it. So um so that's Peter's beginning. He's encouraging people to stop with the negative stuff and start uh really growing up into being better uh followers of of Christ.
Living Stones And Team Belonging
SPEAKER_01Um but then he gets to this, which I it's one of my favorite passages in the New Testament, just because of my experience in teaching kids for years and years and years. Um, and I was a Methodist pastor, so in that particular denomination, most of the time, you have a class when the kids are in the sixth grade, it's called Confirmation. And it's a class where they learn more about the faith, but also at the end of that class, they have an opportunity if they have not been baptized to be baptized, uh, but also if they choose to, they can join the church as full members. So this was one of the passages that I would use here in uh 1 Peter chapter 2, beginning with verse 5, um to teach them. And so I would I would read the passage, and then I would have the kids break up into groups of like three or four, and they would actually draw out this passage. And so I'm just gonna read it, and then just let's just visualize what that means as far as leadership. So, verse five, it says, You also like living stones are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. So let's just focus on the first part. You are living stones being built into a spiritual house. Okay. So I I would just read that, and I would give the kids like 30 minutes, give them a blank piece of big paper and all kinds of markers, and they would uh say, you draw what what that visually means to you. And I still remember it uh doing this, I did it for years. Um, how many of the kids it was like they suddenly clicked that Christianity is not just an individual thing, it's not just about me and God, it's about me and others with God. Yes, it is about me and God, but it's also me and others. And that right there, because they wrote, they did it themselves, they drew a picture of a house with you know the the bricks having arms or legs or eyes or whatever, they're thinking, oh, we're in this together. And what a powerful image. And so, as a leader, my question would be do your people know that you're in this together? Or do they feel like they're doing this all alone by themselves? Do they feel connected? Do they feel connected to you? Do they feel connected to other people that they work with? Now, for people that work remotely, okay, that's a challenge. Now, you because you could just have an online meetings, you know, uh Zoom meetings, whatever, um, or Microsoft Teams or whatever you use for all of those kind of things. And and so sometimes you just you know you're working for the company, but you don't necessarily feel connected to them. And so it's like, okay, how do you help make that happen if you're the boss? How do you feel? How do you help people feel connected when they're not geographically connected? And that is a real challenge because so many more people now are working remotely or home or whatever. And I think it's a a huge challenge for businesses that do that, which I think is great. Um, but it's also important to make sure that every person feels connected to the the general mission, a company. Um, and and that's a real challenge for your leader. So however you can do that, um I think it's just really good.
SPEAKER_02So I'm just over here daydreaming. I was thinking about confirmation class. I actually remember my confirmation class. I remember having to memorize Lord's Prayer, Apostles' Creed, and all that stuff. And and and then I went down a path on that, you know. I was listening to you, and then I thought about I actually played Simon Peter in the Easter play that same year as the confirmation class. And I was like, oh, I brought up a memory of Simon Peter. So yeah, so so yeah, so I was I was like, okay, that's that's pretty cool. It sort of all sort of came together as you were talking about confirmation. I was like, hmm, I remember that.
SPEAKER_01I remember that like it was yesterday. So that's great. I remember confirmation, I remember several things, but I do remember every person that uh we had an associate pastor named Charlie Price. He was just an associate. Come on now. Really? Charlie. Sometimes I say the wrong name, but it's Charlie Price. Um, he was an amazing associate pastor, he had been there for years, and so one of the requirements about being in um confirmation was that you had to have a personal one-on-one with uh Reverend Price. And so I still remember this. We'd go into his office, he was sitting behind his desk, we'd sit in front, and I still remember the sign on this desk. He didn't have a name plate like a lot of people do. He had this sign that looked like a nameplate, but it said this, and I still remember it, and I was like, you know, 12 or 11. It says, if you're not as close to God as you used to be, guess who moved?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's great. I love that.
SPEAKER_01So just think about that, is what I just said a few minutes ago. So if you have people that work remotely, how do you keep them connected to the whole? And maybe it's something that you can do remotely by spending a little time with each one of your employees, five minutes. It just takes a five-minute thing. Um, it might be longer, but it just could be five minutes, just so let them know that they are important, what they do matters, and you really appreciate them doing what they're doing for the company.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, there's so many ways. I mean, we we learned a lot when we went through COVID and all that stuff where we had to communicate over the the thing, and we came up with all kinds of fun stuff to do and and show and tells online and uh the coffee and happy hour, whatever it might be. There's all kinds of different things that you can do to uh still create that that environment. And and sometimes it's just a simple five-minute, ten-minute conversation, and ask them what they do over the weekend, you know. That's the first thing we sort of talk about. What'd you do this weekend, right? Before we get started on the show, and what's what's your weekend and all that stuff. And it's just it's just little things that add up.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, over time, those little things just really gain momentum. Yeah, yeah. So let's move on.
Identity Before Instruction
SPEAKER_01So after the spiritual house, uh, we get into uh verse nine, and I think verse nine here is just so deep. I mean, I have my Bible right in front of me, and all of those verse nine and ten are underlined, which because it's is so powerful, but I'm just gonna read it and then we'll talk about leadership principles. It says this, but you are a chosen race, um, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God. Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's a major, major principle there.
SPEAKER_01So Yeah. And the principle you would say would be what?
SPEAKER_02Uh identity comes before instruction, sort of, you know, what's your identity? And and you know, uh, I think that he's saying, you know, um behave better. He, you know, he says, you know, not only behave better, but remember who you are, you know, you're you're chosen, you're royal, you're holy, you're you're God's own possession, and and that's people behave differently when they know who they are, right? And and and you're a believer, and I think that's some deep stuff, right?
SPEAKER_01Right. And so many times we get our identity um from the pressure, from competitors, from critics, so much of our Yeah, we talked about that, right? Yeah. Well, whoever voices the loudest, that's what we think our identity is. And and a leader needs to keep helping people realize that your identity is not any of that. Okay. No.
SPEAKER_02Um and so uh And that and that's sort of tied into some of the the things that you see in and nowadays, and people resonate, you know. Uh uh, they talk about you know the company, who who are we? You know, everybody wants to know what the background is, you know, what do you stand for? And you know, um yeah, and and and from a marketing standpoint, from uh people wanting, you know, is it uh they they want to know the backstory on it. And it's the same with a leadership. When you're buying a company, you're buying into a company, you buy into the leader based on the same. What's your backstory? You know, what what do you stand for? Because you you want to know if you align, because you know, it and I think that's one of those things that uh uh you you you have to express that to your people to uh create that that that bond to see where everybody's uh different and where you know we're we're not always gonna have the same thoughts, but if we know how to mesh those together, then that helps us uh uh become better leaders.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely, absolutely. And going along with that, um it it's important for a leader to be in control of things like you're gonna have criticism, you're gonna have disappointments, um, and we need to be sure that those critics don't define you, that that the disappointments don't define you. Um and so because whatever defines you is gonna control your conduct. Yeah, and so a leader makes sure that they kind of help them get through that and rem remember who they are, um that they're valuable. And anytime a leadership is lonely, and and and so as a leader, um you're gonna face criticism, you're To face disappointments, you're going to face all kinds of negative things. And the question is, are you letting those things define you? Right. And sometimes leaders need to get with other leaders. Um, because I, you know, we've been there, it's hard to be sometimes uh open up to the people that work for you. Um, and so you need to find other people um that like a leadership group or whatever to you can people you can trust. It's not gonna stab you in the back, um, to just kind of share those with and remember, help them help them and them help you remember who you are, and uh that you're not defined by all that negative stuff. Um and uh helps you keep a clear mind, positive attitude, and those kind of things during difficult times.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, 100%.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, because people are watching uh as a leader, they're watching how you handle pressure, um, they're watching how you respond to criticism, uh they're they're watching how you treat people that are under you. Um uh how how what are your values when it's inconvenient to be consistent? People are watching you. Um and um so anyway, that's a very, very powerful lesson there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and and that's one of the things. What are you doing when people aren't watching, you know, and and uh when it's inconvenient. And I think that's a the powerful, powerful statement there. Because you think about that, you know, so many times people don't want to be leaders, they don't want to deal with the pressure at the time that they have to deal with the pressure, and and I think that uh, you know, when when you get in tight spots, you know, it always the leaders, you know, when when you go through something or they the people in battle, you know, they've always said the leaders really stand out when you get to battle. And from a military, when I was teaching military a lot, so uh that's when the the values come out, you know, because uh it's people step up or they don't step up. So yes.
SPEAKER_01And it's easy once you're being criticized to criticize back. It's it's easy to um hit back when someone's hitting you. I mean, it just is, and and um but people are watching, they're watching for your integrity, and your real character comes out during trials. It really does. Yeah,
Leading Through Criticism With Integrity
SPEAKER_01um, it def helps define you, helps other people see what you're really like when you're going through some difficult times.
SPEAKER_02So and then I know Peter went in there, he says that um um it's not good. I I don't even know how he stated it. It's something about uh not to abuse authority. I remember that in there, that uh you need to watch, you know, um how you use your authority. And I think that's one of the things when when people are uh I I could I could see that from a leadership standpoint where you become a believer, you become a follower, you feel that, you know, I met Jesus and you know, shook his hand, and and do I do I talk down to people or you know, do I become a different person? I I see that sometimes leadership um that people probably had to watch back then, you know, because you could that ego could come out. Uh because it comes out in in leadership a lot of times.
SPEAKER_01It does. And it's people get promoted to different positions, and then they um look down on people that they used to, you know, work with. Um and in Christianity, unfortunately, uh this happens sometimes, and we call it people that are holier than thou. They look down their nose at and it's like we're all we were all on the non-journey before, and then we started on the journey. Right. Um and so we should welcome people who are on the journey. You know, we should encourage them, we should uh help them grow in their faith and and not criticize them and and say the same thing was true in business. You know, you have an employee that's just starting out, um, they're gonna make mistakes. And the question is, how do you respond to that? Do you use that as a teaching opportunity or a time of criticism? Um and you just never know. Like last week we talked about Admiral Nimitz. Um, when he was out of the Annapolis after three years, he made a major mistake in running a ship aground, but he gave a second chance and became an incredible, incredible officer and uh leader of the whole Pacific Fleet in World War II. And so, so it's important how you handle those mistakes when someone's early on in their job with you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I think Peter pointed that out. He said something about how when Jesus was suffering, he he he did it without becoming sinful in his responses, right? So he me he could have become pretty nasty, but his responses were held that I think that ties into you and how you handle yourself as a leader. I think that was a a point that stood out as far as a a nice leadership strength. Um, you know, that that that the strength is part of being under control at all times.
SPEAKER_01So yes, and so let me just read um verse 21 from chapter two. So we read this. Okay. To Christ um, to this you were called because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his steps. I I just think those those last four words, follow in his steps. What a what Peter is saying is okay, you see the example, are you living it or are you just talking about it? Um and and so as a as a leader, people are watching you like a hawk. I mean they are. Yes. And and and so the question is, are they behaving just like you? Um are you setting an exceptional example for them or are you cutting corners? Um, are you just kind of fudging the truth a little bit? Um and if you are, then why do you expect your employees to do any different? Um so if they see your actions that are not necessarily 100% right, then you can't expect them to be 100% right. Now, some employees are gonna still be that way, you know, 100% right, but some of them are gonna look at you and go, okay, well, if he can do it, I can do it. So you have to think about the example you're setting, and do you want people to follow that exactly? And hopefully the answer is yes. And um and I just think that's a great leadership principle. Uh, you want people to actually be like you, follow you, give the passion, but you've got to, you can't like we talked about this literally from the very first uh episode. You have to be a person of your word, you have to walk your talk, um, and and your people that are around you, they'll know when it's not. They just will. And uh Peter's just reiterating that uh for people. If you're a Christ follower, you need to follow in his steps.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's awesome. So yeah, and then uh, you know, I think that you know, anything else for chapter two? I know chapter three takes us into more of the relationships and and some other stuff, but uh yeah, so I think it's a good place to stop. I don't want to get into that. We're running down towards the end of the
Follow In His Steps And Close
SPEAKER_02show here. So you've got dad jokes to do, so I mean cut you cut you short on dad jokes, you know. So that's never gonna happen.
SPEAKER_01Just doing prep for Christmas Eve. I mean, do you see?
SPEAKER_02Exactly right.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so what do you call this is we're we're you know done with the scripture for today. Um so what do you call friends who listen to music together? Earbuds.
SPEAKER_02Nice. I was in there and I was like, I was going the note route or something.
SPEAKER_01Well, okay, so why don't elephants use computers?
SPEAKER_02They can't type on the keyboard?
SPEAKER_01They're afraid of the mouse.
SPEAKER_02There we go. I love it.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so I think we've said this, but for those of you who are new to the show, you might not have heard this joke. What happens if a frog parks illegally? It gets towed.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's right. I was like, I should know this one. That's one. What do you call a line of people lifting mozzarella?
SPEAKER_01A line of people lifting mozzarella. Lifting mozzarella. Yeah. Cheese heads.
SPEAKER_02Cheesy pickup line.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I was uh I was close. Okay, so what did one ocean say to the other ocean?
SPEAKER_02Hmm, I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Nothing. It just waved.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I knew that one. I was trying to find me a joke. I knew that one. Why'd the mortgage broker go out of business? I don't know. He lost interest.
SPEAKER_01Oh gosh.
SPEAKER_02That's it for me. You got it, the rest of them.
SPEAKER_01Okay, what do cats eat for breakfast? Don't know. Mice crispies.
SPEAKER_00You know?
SPEAKER_01Um okay, so I had a friend named Sam.
SPEAKER_02Sam, Sam, Sam, I am. I do not like green eggs anymore. Is that Sam?
SPEAKER_01Uh and I and I encouraged him. He's like, what? No, no, we're not talking Dr. Susan. Okay. And I encouraged him, no matter what, no matter what, no, under no circumstances should you ever sing. But Sam sung anyway.
SPEAKER_02Nice.
SPEAKER_01Okay. What do you call a dead chemist?
SPEAKER_02Oh, wow.
SPEAKER_01No, what do you do with a dead chemist?
SPEAKER_02Oh, I don't know.
SPEAKER_01You bury him. I was a chemistry major in in college for a couple of years until I felt called to ministry. So periodic table, I'm at home with that.
