Tuesday Announcements 7/15: Marcio Buffolo Episode, Pie and Beer Day at Kiitos, and Another Cider Guest

Erik Nilsson

Dive into Utah's vibrant craft beverage scene with host Eric Nilsson as he connects the dots between fascinating local makers revolutionizing what we drink in the Beehive State.

The podcast recently featured Marcio Buflo, Mountain West Cider's innovative head brewmaster, whose journey from studying in Brazil to creating beloved shade sours (think pecan pie and even spaghetti dinner flavors!) showcases the international influences enriching Salt Lake's craft beverage landscape. Mountain West Cider has become more than just a place for drinks – it's a community hub in the Marmalade District where locals gather for live music, food, and connection.

Looking ahead, Eric announces several exciting events, including the cleverly-named "Pie and Beer Day" celebrations at Keto's Brewing (a playful twist on Utah's Pioneer Day). This pre-holiday gathering will feature craft beers paired with delicious pies from Pie Fight. Additionally, the Fork Cancer fundraiser on August 8th at the Galvin Center demonstrates how the local beverage community supports important causes, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society's research and patient support programs.

The upcoming episode spotlights Carly and Brendan Coyle, founders of Dendrick Estate – Utah's newest cidery with a distinctive farm-to-glass approach. What sets them apart? They grow all their apples on-site before transforming them into exceptional ciders. Their recent product launch represents an exciting new chapter in Utah's evolving craft beverage story, one where quality, sustainability, and local sourcing take center stage.

Join the conversation about Utah's craft beverage innovators by listening to new episodes every Saturday, and connect with the community at upcoming events. Your support helps tell these important local stories!

Speaker 1:

What is up everybody and welcome back to another Tuesday update. I'm your host of the Small Lake City podcast, eric Nilsson. A couple of updates and events coming up, but first off, if you haven't listened to, the most recent episode with Marcio Buflo, who is the current head brewmaster at Mountain West Cider, one of my favorite patios in the city. As far as a place to go grab a beverage of sorts, go see some live music, have some food a great spot in the city. As far as a place to go grab a beverage of sorts, go see some live music, have some food a great spot in the marmalade district. But he's also the person who created a lot of the fun shade sours that we see on their shelves, everything from pecan pie and blueberry all the way to spaghetti dinner fun to sit down. Talk to him about how he started getting his master's in Brazil, which brought him up to the US and to Salt Lake City, utah, specifically to continue it, until he was asked for some help trying to fix some problems at Shades. And here he is now so great episode to watch there. Also, as far as events coming up, next Wednesday at Keto's Brewing we have the pie and beer day celebrations. Uh, keto's is going to be putting out all of their favorite beers, just like we know and love. We are going to have pie fight there as well, to bring up some of their delicious pies and handheld pastries, as well as a couple other ones that I'm working on getting there as well. So come, grab some beer, have a pie. We will actually be having a giveaway for a few other things as well that I'm excited to announce, so make sure to come next Wednesday, the pregame before the 24th of July, aka Pioneer Day, aka Pie and Beer Day Coming up on August 8th at the Galvin Center downtown in Salt Lake City, we have the Fork Cancer event coming up for the American Cancer Society.

Speaker 1:

This event is meant, as a fundraiser, to help raise some funds for the American Cancer Society, all going towards cancer research, getting legislation passed to help with cancer research and helping people going through cancer as well. I will be there. I'm one of the tastemakers that's been nominated to help fundraise for the event this year. So if you'd like to join the fundraiser, there is a link in the show notes here to purchase your tickets and to also donate as well. So any donation is greatly appreciated, no matter how big or how small, much appreciated from me and from the American Cancer Society. It's a ways out, but on August 19th, partnering with the wonderful women at Bookish to do an event at Mountain West Cider. So come and check out some of the ciders that me and Marcio talk about in the episode, as well as a fun event with the wonderful women of Bookish.

Speaker 1:

But lastly, I want to mention this week's guest. So I'm going to keep it on the topic of cider this week as we host Carly and Brendan Coyle, the founders of Dendrick Estate, the newest cidery in Utah. But the fun thing about them is they grow all of the apples there on their property which then get turned into their amazing cider. They just barely launched their first cider this past weekend and I was able to go up and record an episode with them on their property. So that will be releasing this saturday wherever you prefer to listen. Hope you all have a great week and I will see you this saturday and especially next wednesday at keto's. See you there.
