Salt Lake City is moving fast and the headlines prove it. One week we’re celebrating a first-ever NHL playoff win on Utah ice, and the next we’re asking bigger questions about what kind of city we’re becoming and who gets to shape it.

We start with a quick nod to the latest conversation with Guy and Debbie Perry of Salt Lake Running Company, because building community in Utah often starts with shared hobbies like road running and trail running. Then we jump into the week’s biggest news: the Utah Mammoth making history and why it suddenly feels like Salt Lake is turning into a real sports town, plus the uneasy spotlight on the Utah Jazz as analysts hammer home the same offseason priority: defense.

The most far-reaching story is the proposed Box Elder County AI data center, billed as one of the largest AI infrastructure projects in the country. We talk through why people are pushing back, including concerns about energy demand, water use, air quality, and the pace and transparency of the approval process. From there we hit the full range of local news, including the surreal Harman’s parking garage crash, serious allegations involving a Salt Lake City Council member, and an update on charges filed in a church shooting case. We also touch on Utah cloud seeding technology tests and why water and drought conversations keep coming back.

If you want a sharp, local read on Salt Lake City news, Utah politics, AI development, sports culture, and environmental questions, hit play. Subscribe, share this with a friend who cares about Utah, and leave a review with the headline you think matters most.

What is up, everybody, and welcome back to another Tuesday update. It is me, Eric Nielsen, your host of the Small Lake City Podcast. And before we jump into the Tuesday update, I want to make sure that you have checked out the most recent episode with Guy and Debbie Perry. Now they're the owners of Salt Lake Running Company, and they've supported the Salt Lake running scene as it's evolved over the years. And honestly, it's a great story about building community here in Utah, especially around two of the most common hobbies that people tend to join as they move here, both road and trail running. So that is live on both YouTube if you want to watch the conversation, as well as wherever you prefer to listen to podcasts. So, all right, let's jump into what's been going on in Salt Lake and Utah over the last week. We've got everything from NHL history to massive AI data center that people are pushing back on, to a car literally driving through the Harman's parking garage. So let's get into it. First up, Utah Sports History. The Utah Mammoth just won their first ever playoff game in Utah, beating Vegas and taking a serious lead in the series. Unfortunately, it came back as they lost yesterday against them for the series to be now tied two and two. And regardless of how you feel about hockey, this is a big deal. We've gone from not having a team to hosting playoff games basically overnight. And it feels like Salt Lake City is quickly becoming a legit sports city. So if you're Real Salt Lake or the Utah Jazz, you've got some pressure from the new guys in town. Now, staying on sports headlines, there are still major questions around the Utah Jazz heading into next season. The biggest one is defense. A lot of analysts are basically saying that if they don't fix that, it doesn't matter what else they do. So we'll see what happens this offseason. Now let's talk about a story that a lot of people still don't fully know about. The massive data center being proposed out in Box Elder County. This is being called one of the largest AI infrastructure projects in the country. We're talking around 40,000 acres, up to 9 gigawatts of power, potentially more energy than the entire state of Utah uses right now. And the thing that's getting people fired up is not just the size, but how it's happening. Residents are showing up to meetings saying, wait, when did this get decided? There are concerns about water usage, air quality, energy demand, and honestly just the pace of it all. And it's turning into a bigger conversation of who actually gets a say in these kinds of projects, because right now a lot of people are feeling like the answer is not them. There's even city council meetings where people aren't allowed to share their thoughts or vocalize anything. So we'll follow this one as it continues to mature, but something to definitely pay attention to. Now, on a completely different note, if you were hoping for a calm, normal Utah headline this week, you're not gonna get it. This week, someone literally drove through a Harman's parking garage in Salt Lake downtown and not like clipped a pole, scraped a wall, or had a fender bender. We're talking full on through the side of it, chaos. It's one of those stories where you see it and think, How did this even happen? Thankfully, no major injuries were reported, but definitely one of those more local bizarre stories this week. And now this one is getting a lot of serious attention. A member of the Salt Lake City Council, Ava Lopez Chavez, is being accused of sexual misconduct. Details are still coming out and the situation is ongoing, but this is obviously a big deal for local leadership. Anytime you're talking about accusations at that level, it raises questions about accountability, investigations, and what happens next. So this is definitely something we'll be keeping an eye on. And switching gears again, there was also movement in a major criminal case here in Salt Lake. Charges have officially been filed in connection to a church shooting earlier this year. That was a case that shook a lot of people, and now it's starting to move through the legal system. And then one more quick one on the environmental side. There's been a lot of buzz around a new cloud seeding technology being tested in Utah. The idea is that it could help increase snowfall and potentially help with drought conditions. Some people are excited about it, others are pretty skeptical. But with everything going on in the Great Salt Lake and water levels, it's definitely something people are going to be paying attention to. And that's your Tuesday update this week, but also coming up this week, I've got a great episode for you. This week we're joined by Tyler Glenn, the lead singer of Neon Trees. We talk about him moving to Utah, starting the band, touring around the world, both coming out and having a faith crisis very publicly, and what he's up to now, and especially as he's about to head on tour again. This is a really great conversation and definitely one you are not going to want to miss. Also, make sure to subscribe to the newsletter. There's a link in the show notes below. It's going to help you know what's going on in the next two weeks, and I send that out every Thursday. Also, make sure to join the Discord. There is a link in the show notes below as well. This is where you can find the Small Lake City community, uh, find some people to hang out with, know of all the events going on, and so much more. So make sure to join both of those. Have a great week, and I will see you soon with the interview with Tyler Glenn. See ya.
