I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE | What Jesus Meant in John 6:35 | Powerful Christian Sermon

What did Jesus Christ mean when He declared, “I am the bread of life”?

In John 6:35 (NIV), Jesus declared: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

The world offers many things to satisfy the human heart—money, success, possessions, pleasure, recognition, education, religion, and power. Yet none of these things can satisfy the deepest hunger of the soul. Physical bread can sustain the body temporarily, but only Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life, can save the soul and give eternal life.

You may have enough food on your table and still have an empty heart. You may be successful before people and spiritually starving before God. You may attend church, know Christian language, and possess religious knowledge, yet never personally receive Jesus Christ by faith.

Jesus did not say that He merely gives bread. He declared that He is the Bread of Life. Salvation is not found in religious ceremonies, human achievements, good works, or denominational membership. Salvation is found in Jesus Christ alone.

In this powerful, Christ-centered sermon, Evangelist Dr. Gabriel Oluwakotanmi explains:

  • What Jesus meant when He said, “I am the Bread of Life”
  • Why every human soul desperately needs Jesus Christ
  • The difference between physical hunger and spiritual hunger
  • Why worldly success cannot satisfy the soul
  • How Jesus fulfills our deepest spiritual need
  • Why knowing about Jesus is not the same as trusting Him
  • What it means to come to Christ and believe in Him
  • Why rejecting Jesus is rejecting God’s provision for eternal life
  • How repentance and faith lead to salvation
  • Why the Bread of Life is essential for eternity

Jesus warned in John 6:27 (NIV): “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life.”

Everything you possess in this world will eventually pass away. Your money will be left behind. Your career will end. Your body will grow weak. Your earthly accomplishments will fade. But your soul will live forever. The most urgent question is not, “What will I eat today?” The most urgent question is, “Has my soul received Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life?”

Do not mistake familiarity with Christianity for saving faith. Knowing facts about Christ does not save. Attending church without surrendering to Christ does not save. Religious activity without repentance does not save. You must personally come to Jesus, trust Him, receive His forgiveness, and surrender your life to Him.

Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and rose victoriously from the dead. He now offers forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life to everyone who repents and believes in Him.

The world may feed your desires, but only Jesus Christ can feed your starving soul.

Rejecting Jesus Christ is rejecting the only Bread heaven has provided. Without Him, a person may be physically alive while remaining spiritually dead.

If this message speaks to your heart, do not harden it. Turn away from sin and come to Jesus Christ today. He will forgive you, cleanse you, restore you, and give you eternal life.

This is the faith of come and believe. The word is alive, it speaks to our soul, calling us higher, making us whole. Faith comes by hearing, hearing God's word, a voice in the silence. Just will be heard. Let that be hard. Let that be dumb.

Hello everyone. I want to thank you for joining us again today. And welcome to the faith hour, where the word of God is faithfully proclaimed, and Jesus Christ is exalted as the only Savior of the world. Today we invite you to come to the one who declares, I am the bread of life, the only bread that satisfies the hunger of the human soul and gives eternal life to all who believe in him. The seven I am declaration of Jesus Christ were never spoken as a mere memorable saying or religious logo. Like all of his word, they were not empty sandbikes designed to impress the crowd. Every declaration was deliberated, powerful and eternal in its significance. Millions of people have read this word throughout history. Countless sermons have been preached on them in churches around the world. Yet they remain as relevant today as the day they first came from the lips of our Lord and Savior. They deserve our careful attention because they reveal not only who Jesus Christ is, but whose, but also why he came to the world and what he can only do for the sinful humanity and where he alone can lead us from all eternity. Jesus Christ proclaimed, I am the bread of life, partly because of humanity has forgotten or deliberately ignored that we are more than physical bodies. Every one of us has both body and soul. The body was formed from the dust, and one day it will return to dust. My body will become dust, your body will become dust. But the soul will live forever, hidher in the presence of God or separated from him in hell. Many people passionately care for the body while completely negating the soul. They feed the body, clothe the body, exercise the body, beautify the body, and seek medical care for the body, but they starve the soul that will exist for eternity. What a tragedy it is to nourish what will return to dust, why negative what will never cease to exist. Jesus declared in John chapter 6, verse 51. I am the living bread that come down from heaven. Whoever he eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. Jesus Christ is the living bread your soul desperately needs. To eat this bread means to receive Christ by faith. Repent of your sin. Trust in his sacrifice, obey his word and follow him as Lord and Savior. Physical bread can sustain your body only for a little while, but Jesus Christ gave eternal life to the soul throughout this message. And we've been repeating this concept deliberately because it is important for our eternity. My prayer is that after hearing this message, you will no longer devote all your attention to the body while serving your soul. You will care for your soul. Feed upon the word of God, surrender your life to Jesus Christ and receive the eternal life that only the bread of life can give. Throughout this semi-part series, we will discover that each declaration unfills another aspect of the glory of Jesus Christ. Together they reveal his divine identity, proclaim his saving mission, expose the deepest need of the human heart, and call every person to faith and repentance. These are not merely theological statements to admire. They are defined invitations that demand a response. These words of Jesus Christ are not merely theological statements to admire. They are defined truth to believe, commands to obey, and a foundation upon which to build our lives. Every one of them confronts us with the question: What will you do with Jesus Christ? What will you do? Today we begin with one of the most profound declaration ever spoken. I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John chapter 6, verse 35. This is far more than a beautiful metaphor. It is a declaration that every human soul is spiritually hungry. Every person is searching for satisfaction. Every one of us. Some pursue weight passionately without God or caring for their soul. Believing money will satisfy them, but it never does. All that chase education without God, pleasure, success, relationship, popularity, or religion is said, or without God in it. Yet, generation after generation prove the same painful truth. Nothing this world offer can satisfy the deepest hunger of the human soul. Nothing. We fill our lives with tempority, yet our heart remains empty because we were created for God. Among all the knowledge available to humanity, and there are plenty of them, there's none greater, more urgent, or more life-giving than the knowledge of God. We can master science, accumulate wealth, build successful career, and gain the apples of the world. But if we do not know God through Jesus Christ, we have missed the very purpose for which we are created. The knowledge of God is not information to impress the intellect. A lack of knowledge can make one drink poison and expect someone else to die from it. Brothers and sisters, I am convinced that our lack of knowledge and lack of application of the commandment of God is responsible for the deterioration of our nations, our homes, our churches, and our personal lives. I'm telling you, brethren, let this truth be told boldly without any reservation. Our ignorance of God's truth and our refusal to obey his commandment are tearing down our nation, weakening our homes, corrupt our corrupt our churches, and destroy our personal life. To truly know God is to stand in hour of his holiness, trust in his mercy, walk in obedience to his word, and rest in the certainty of his eternal promises. Without the knowledge of God and his application to our life, wisdom is empty, success is temporary, purpose is uncertain, and life remains lost in spiritual darkness. That is why the I am declaration matters. I hope you will not miss any of these series, no matter the level of your knowledge of God. Please don't miss it. They are God's revelation of Himself through His Jesus Christ. The answer, the greatest question of life: who is Jesus? Why did He come? Why do we desperately need Him? What happened if we reject Jesus Christ? What happened? These are not questions for theologies alone. They are questions for every man, every woman, every soul and child must that must answer. Because eternity depends upon upon the answer. As we examine Jesus' word, I am the bread of life, we will discover that Christ is not merely offering us a better life, he is offering us Himself. He is not one option among many, he is not one spiritual pathway among can less other. He is the only bread that satisfies the hunger of the soul, the only savior who forgives sin. The only Lord who grants eternal life and the only hope that we never disappoint. The challenge before us today is simple but unavoidable. What are you feeding your soul with? Every day we nourish our body with food, but are we feeding our soul with the bread of life? We are trying to satisfy eternal hunger with temporary pleasures. Are we living on the empty promises of this world while rejecting the one who alone can give everlasting life? My prayer is that before this message is over, you will not simply admire the word of Jesus Christ, you will believe them. You will allow them to transform your lives. You will come to Him in faith and you will discover for yourself that the one who declares, I am the bread of life, is still satisfying hungry soul today, just as he did over 2,000 years ago. Let us begin with the very force of this majestic, magnificent, and eternal declaration. Jesus said, then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John chapter 6, verse 35. This word we have spoken shortly after after Jesus miraculously filled more than 5,000 people with only five loaves of bread and two fish. The crowd were amazed. They wanted more miracles. They wanted more free food. I mean, I will be looking for free food myself. They began following Jesus, not because they desired eternal life, but because they desired another free meal. Jesus saw through their heart. He knew they were pursuing bread, but ignoring the savior. They wanted his gift, but they did not want his lordship. How little has changed. It looks like nothing has changed. Millions of people today want Jesus to solve their problem. They want Jesus to bless them. Bless me, Lord. Bless me, Lord. They want Jesus to bless their finances, heed their sickness, rescue their marriages and remove their trouble. Yet they have no desire to surrender their life to Him. They want heavy, they simply do not want holiness. They want blessing. They simply do not want obedience. They do not want a Lord. Jesus will not allow the crowd to remain focused on temporary bread, like every like many people are doing today. He redirected their attention to the greatest need every human being has. It is not physical hunger, it is spiritual hunger. Brothers and sisters, is your life focused only on temporary things and not eternity? Is your life focused on only what Jesus can do for you and not obeying Him? Every person born into this world carry within his heart an emptiness that nothing in this world can permanently satisfy. Nothing. That is why people spend their entire life searching. Some search for happiness in money. Others search in education. Some search through romance after romance, jumping from one person to another. Others bury themselves in work. Some seek satisfaction through alcohol, drug, pornography, gambling, fame, politics, entertainment or religion. Yet after achieving everything they pursue, they still feel empty. Why? Why? Because the soul was never designed to feed upon the world. It was created for God. Just as your body cannot survive without food. Your soul cannot survive without Jesus Christ. That is why the richest people without Jesus Christ in their life often remain miserable. That is why famous celebrity without God ruining their heart sometimes confess they feel empty inside. That is why people who appear to have everything except Jesus Christ commit suicide. Because they feel empty. You can fill your garage with luxury cars and still have an empty heart. You can fill your bank account and still have a staff in soul. You can fill your calendar with achievement and still be spiritually bankrupt. The problem is not outside of us. The problem is within us. Yes, in our soul. Our greatest need is not another possession. Our greatest need is the bread of life. The Jews who are the original audience of this message, listening to Jesus, immediately remember the manner God gave Israel in the wilderness. For 40 years God fed his people every morning with bread from heaven. But every person who ate that manner eventually died. Jesus now declared that he is the true bread from heaven. Not bread that sustains the body for a day, bread that gives eternal life forever. In today's world, there are food in this world that only the wealthy can afford. Some people spend enormous amounts of money on real white truffles that cost 3,000 to 5,000 per pound. Premier caveat costs $34,000 per kilogram. Japanese waguo beef that costs $400 per kilogram. They make reservation months in advance. They travel across the country to taste them. They photograph the mail, post it online, and want the world to know they have eaten something real and exclusive. But brethren, listening closely, no matter how expensive the meal is, it cannot keep anyone alive forever. The person who eats the finest wagyu beef will go hungry again. The one who consumes the rarest caveat will still grow old. The billionaire at the richest table, and the poorest person with the empty plate are both marching towards eternity. The grave does not ask what kind of bread you ate. You can sit at a table overflowing with delicacies and still have an empty heart. You can satisfy your appetite for a few hours while your soul is starving to death, guilty before God, enslaved by sin and unprepared for eternity. No earthly male can forgive your sin. No chef can cook peace for a troubled conscience. No restaurant can serve reconciliation with God. No amount of money can purchase salvation. And no physical bread can defeat death and give eternal life. That is why the declaration of Jesus Christ is relevant to all of us. I am the living. Bread that comes down from heaven. Whoever eat this bread will live forever. The bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. John chapter 6, verse 51. Jesus was not teaching people to eat his physical body. He was teaching that salvation comes by personally receiving him through faith. Just as food becomes part of us when we eat it, Christ must become the very center of our lives. He must not merely be admired. He must be received. He must be obeyed. He must not merely be respected. He must be trusted. He must not merely be acknowledged. He must become Lord of our lives. What does it mean to eat the bread of life, you may ask? This is the big question that I hope to answer today. To eat the bread of life is to receive Jesus Christ by faith. Abandon every false hope of salvation and depend on him alone for the forgiveness of your sin, the transformation of your life and the gift of eternal life. To eat the bread of life is to reject the empty banquet of sin and the starving promises of this world. Every precious without Jesus Christ leave the soul hungry, but every one who feeds on Jesus Christ finds life that death itself cannot destroy. To eat the bread of life is not merely to acknowledge or speak about Jesus or take church only. It is to believe in him, surrender to his worship, obey his word, and make him the daily nourishment of your soul. Every soul is feeding on something. I'm telling you, some feed on wealth, other on pleasures, power, religion, or success. Brother, what are you feeding your soul with? What are you feeding your soul with? Only those who feed on Jesus Christ, the bread of life, will stand satisfied before God on the day of judgment and inherit everlasting life. Those who reject Jesus Christ, the bread of life, may satisfy their body for a season, but they will face eternity with starving soul and no hope before God's judgment. Feast on Jesus Christ today. For when the trumpet stands and every soul stand before God, hardly bread will be useless. Only those who receive the bread of life will enter everlasting life. Brethren, if you refuse to feast upon Jesus Christ, the bread of life, while you are in this world, while you are awake, when you are breathing, you will not be welcome to the glorious wedding supper of the lamp described in Revelation chapter 19. You won't be welcome there. Receive Christ today while the invitation of grace is still open. What does this mean for your eternity? What does it mean? Every human being is marching towards eternity. Every heartbeat is one step closer. Every sunlight shut in the number of days remaining. One day, your final meal will be eaten. One day, your final conversation will be smoking, will be smoking. One day your final bread will leave your body. On that day, your money cannot allow, cannot follow you. Your education cannot accomplish you. Your achievement cannot stand before God for you. No. Only Jesus Christ can. Without Him, you may be breathing physically while remaining spiritually dead. Jesus did not come merely to improve your earthly life, he came to give life to the world. Therefore, receive him by faith before your final opportunity passes into eternity. Those who receive Christ possess eternal life. Those who reject him remain spiritually dead. Hell is not fail because God failed to provide salvation. Hell, he is failed because people reject the bread of life. God has provided the cure. Many refuse to receive it. Coming to Christ is more than more than repeating a prayer. It is more than joining a church. It is more than being baptized. It is more than carrying a Bible. It is life transformed to the ways of the Lord. It is rejecting the wickedness and the sinfulness of the word. Salvation begins when a sinner realizes I cannot save myself. My religion cannot save me. My morality cannot save me. My good work cannot erase my sin. I desperately need Jesus Christ. I need to be transformed by his word. That is when true faith begins. The hungry soul comes to Christ and feed on his word. The guilty conscience comes to Christ and cross on his righteousness. The broken sinner come to Christ and repentance becomes their daily song. The proud must humble themselves. Not one sinner who truly comes to Christ has ever been rejected. No one is too far from his amazing grace. No one. That means the invitation crosses every boundary. Every race, language, culture, tribe, social class, and past failure. But the response must be personal. You must accept the invitation. No one is saved by proximity. No one is saved by heritage. No one is saved by their parents' faith or their pastor's faith. No one. You must personally believe in Jesus Christ. You must personally receive Him as your Lord and Savior. Your past may be filled with failure just as mine was. Your conscience may accuse you. People may have given up on you, but Jesus has not. We feed our soul with the bread of life by filling our heart the word of God. As we read it, believe it, meditate on it and obey it. Christ nourish our faith, renew our mind, and transform our life. We feed our soul with the bread of life by walking in daily obedience to Jesus Christ. Spiritual nourishment comes not merely from hearing God's word, but from putting it into practice. Every act of obedience strength the soul and draws us closer to the Savior. Every moment spent in God's word nourishes the soul, strengthens our faith, and prepares us to resist the temptation of this word. Every sincere prayer deepen our fellowship with Christ, renew our spiritual strength, and keep our heart dependent upon him. We fill our soul with the bread of life by remaining in fellowship with Jesus through prayer, worship, repentance, and communion with his people. A soul that continually abides in Christ will never be spiritually emptied because the bread of life never runs out, never run dry. Let me ask you something. No one else can answer for you. You are the only one that can answer it. What is feeding your soul today? Is it Christ? Or is it the world? Are you trying to satisfy eternal hunger with temporally precious? Have you spent years chasing things that can never satisfy you? Have you mistaken sources for salvation? Religious for redemption? Activities for holiness? Many people fail their schedule but never fail their soul. Many know about Jesus but do not know him personally. Many attend church faithfully while remaining stranger to Christ. Many carry a Bible while their heart remains untouched by its author. Do not mistake familiarity with Christianity for saving faith. The devil know who Jesus is. They know it more than us. Yet they remain condemned. Merely knowing fact about Christ cannot save you. Salvation comes when you personally trust in Jesus Christ. Surrender your life to him and receive him as your Lord and Savior. Brothers and sisters, this word is passing away. One day your career will end, your body will grow weak, your beauty will fail, and your possession will belong to someone else. Everything you now hold or will hold in future will eventually slip from your hand. But your soul will live forever. These are the core facts that you need to ponder upon. Everything you are working so desperately so desperately to proceed will one day belong to someone else. But your soul will continue with your eternity, your weight will lose its value, your achievement will be forgotten, and your body will return to dust. But your soul will live forever before God. The urgent question is where will your soul spend eternity? The question is not whether your soul will live forever. The question is where? Hell or heaven. Jesus Christ stands before the whole world today declaring, I am the bread of life. It is enough for the guilty soul. It is enough for the addict. It's more than enough for every nation, every tribe, and every human being. Today, feed upon him by faith. Receive him while his mercy is still extended. For the day comes when the invitation ends, the door of the of grace will close, and every person who will reject the bread of life will discover too late that nothing else could ever satisfy their soul. Today is the day of salvation. Do not harden your heart. Come to Jesus Christ while he may still be found. Beloved, we must remember that every human being is marching towards eternity. I said that a while ago. Every heartbeat is one step closer. Every sunrise reduces the number of days left for all of us. One day, our final meal will be eaten. One day. One day, our final conversation will be smoking. One day, your final bread will leave your body. Imagine if your life ends without the bread of life feeding your soul. Can you imagine that terrible thing? Imagine your earthly life ending one day without Jesus Christ, the bread of life, ever feeding and transforming your soul. Imagine taking your final bread with money in the bank, food in the revelator, accomplishment on the wall and admiration of people, but without peace with God. Wow. Imagine entering eternity, physically satisfied but spiritually empty, religiously active but still unsafe. Surrounded by possession but separated from Christ. Imagine what a terrible tragedy it will be to feed your body every day while allowing your soul to starve for a lifetime. Your body reminds you when it is hungry. Your stomach demands food when you and you respond. You arrange your schedule, spend your money and travel whatever distance is necessary to obtain something to eat. But how long has your soul been crying out for forgiveness, for peace, for holiness, for purpose and for reconciliation with God? Why you continue to ignore it? How long? You will never deliberately stave your body for weeks, yet many people have starved their soul for years. They feed on entertainment but neglect the word of God. They consume worldly pleasure but refuse the presence of Christ. They pursue sources but abandon salvation. They prepare carefully for retirement but make no preparation for eternity. The frightening truth is that one day you will eat your final heartly meal. One day you will make your final telephone call. One day you will lie down on the floor, on the ground, and you will never be able to get up for the last time. And one day your heartbeat for the final time and your soul will leave your body. On that day, it will not matter how expensive your meal were, how beautiful your house was, how impressive your position was, or how many people knew your name. It won't matter. So imagine your life ending without the bread of life and then refused to allow that tragedy to become your eternal story. Jesus is calling you today. Come while the invitation is still open. Come while your heart is still beating. Come while mercy is still reaching for you. Repent of your sin. Please do. Stop feeding on the empty promises of this world. Believe that Jesus died for your sin and rose again. Receive him as your Lord and Savior and surrender to him as your Lord. You do not have to enter eternity with a starving soul. The bread of life is before you. Exposed the deepest need of the human soul. When Satan tempted him to turn stone into bread, Jesus answered, It is written, man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Matthew chapter 4, verse 4. The word means man includes every human being, male and female, rich and poor, young and old. Jesus was declaring that physical food can sustain the body temporarily, but it cannot satisfy the soul, reconcile us to God or prepare us for eternity. Bread may keep you alive on earth, but only the truth of God can lead you to eternal life. We need God's written word because it will refill God's will, expose our sin, correct our ways, and direct us towards salvation. Above all, we need Jesus Christ, the living word, who become flesh and live among us. That is why Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry. The question now is Are you living by bread alone? Are you? What then does it mean to live by bread alone? What does it mean? To live by bread alone is to feed your body while starving your soul. You may be physically strong, financially secure, and outwardly successful, yet remain spiritually empty and eternally unprepared. To live by bread alone is to pursue material possession while negating your relationship with God. It is to gain more money in houses, influence, and recognition while losing the very soul that no earthly treasures can replace. To live by bread alone is to depend upon human wisdom while rejecting the wisdom of God. You know, education can inform your mind, but only God's truth can transform your heart and show you the way of salvation. To live by bread alone is to satisfy temporary appetite while ignoring eternal realities. Food will satisfy you for a few hours, pleasure for a moment, and possession for a session. But only Jesus Christ can satisfy the deepest hunger of your soul. To live by bread alone is to prepare carefully for life on earth while making no preparation for eternity. You may plan for retirement, protect your property and ensure your health. But what preparation have you made to stand before God Almighty? To live by bread alone is to exist without truly living. A person without Christ may breathe, walk, eat, travel, and accumulate possession, but eternal life is found only in Jesus Christ. Beloved bread can enter your stomach, but it cannot cleanse your heart. Money can purchase a bed, but it cannot purchase peace. Medicine may extend your earthly life, but it cannot give you eternal life. Religion may improve your appearance before people, but only the blood of Jesus Christ can make you right with God. Do not spend your entire life feeding a body that will one day return to dust while negating the soul that will stand before God. Come to Jesus Christ, the bread of life. Receive His word, believe His gospel, repent of your sin and surrender your life to Him. The body needs bread for today, but the soul needs Jesus Christ for time and eternity. I ask again, are you living by bread alone? I hope not. I pray not. After you listen to this message, I sincerely hope not. As we end this message today, these are the questions I hope you ask yourself. Ask yourself as I am asking myself, is Jesus Christ truly the daily nourishment of my soul? Do I hunger more for God than I hunger for worldly success, entertainment, or pleasures? Am I feeding on God's words every day? If someone observes my life, would they conclude that Christ satisfies my soul? Christ satisfies me. Am I spiritually growing or am spiritually starving because I neglect Christ? Do I see Jesus only in times of crisis or do I depend on him every day? What am I feeding my soul with? Beside Christ. If you need to make an amend of this, take the right step today. Take the repentance step today. May the Lord bless and open the eyes of your heart to the truth of God. Amen.
