United States

Yesterday's State of the Union address by President Trump triggered strongly critical reactions across Latin America.

Leaders in the region denounced the speech mentioning that it exacerbated fear and the excessive use of force and increased tensions between Latin America and his government.

Presidents Lula, Petro and Sheinbaum condemned U.S. interventionism, especially regarding Venezuela and Cuba, calling it a blatant violation of sovereignty and a return to dark eras of U.S. interference.

In the audience at Congress, Representative Joaquin Castro accused Trump of stoking conflicts with Caracas and Mexico and distracting the public from real problems with aggressive rhetoric that fuels corruption and social division.

Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib shouted, you lie and you have killed Americans when Trump boasted about his immigration policies, while several lawmakers walked out of the chamber and others chose not to attend his address.

Trump's approval ratings stand at just 36% in recent polls, the lowest of a U.S. president at this point of their term.

Geneva

On the disarmament conference in Geneva, Russia and China accused Washington of using unfounded allegations as a smokescreen to justify expanding its nuclear arsenal following the expiration of the New START, the nuclear arms treaty between the U.S. and Russia signed in 2010 that ended on the past February 5th.
