Speaker 1:

What's up everybody. This is Tanisha English and you are listening to the Things you Should Know podcast. Okay, so who do we think is coming out with Mr Usher right now? They announced Alicia Keys. I seen it. They announced Alicia Keys. I'm still Clearly Usher. I mean Usher. Clearly, ludacris and Lil John are in this place, most definitely, so I'm sure they're gonna come out. Yes, you have to do that. It's a capacity. Yes, hold on, hold on. We gotta hold on because I want to use this. All right, hold on.

Speaker 1:

Welcome everyone to the Things you Should Know podcast featuring Tanisha English. I'm Tanisha English and, just like in the last episode, we had to pause the conversation because it always gets good, because we'll get going. We will get going. Welcome, sidiya. Back to the podcast. Everyone, thank you, I'm glad to be back.

Speaker 1:

This is so fun. It's so exciting. Yes, we do gotta do a little housekeeping. We're gonna have some fun and then we're gonna take care of business. That's gonna be the agenda. Okay, housekeeping, mental health, check how you doing, how you feeling.

Speaker 1:

You just had a birthday. I did. Oh, mother is 39. Yes, she is looking great. Thank you so much. Yeah, great birthday. I was surrounded with lots of love and laughter.

Speaker 1:

It was awesome, just about to do this slash little year of my 30s and it's lit. It's gonna be lit, it's gonna be lit. You already thinking about 40? Yes, 40 will be somewhere. Hopefully we can go somewhere. Yeah, because we got a year. Give it together. We got a year, we got a year. I'm like all of my destinations, all of these travel warnings coming up. I'm like, hey, calm down, we got a year, we got a year. So, yeah, we'll be somewhere. Okay, 40th Turn up. But yeah, I'm excited.

Speaker 1:

2024 is great. I was thinking of the car ride over here. I said the year of 2024 is if anybody's like shown you grace or just let you slide by, 2024 is up, let's do it. Nobody's safe. Yeah, because I let you slide, I tried to let you be great. You know what? I took the high road. I'm like you know what I'm on my show, obama. They go low, I'm gonna go high. 2024 is a wrap. She's on her. Candace Dillard Bassett yeah, it's a wrap. Candace Dillard Bassett. Mm-hmm, when you go low, I'm gonna go to hell, yeah, I'm going to hell. So that's. I think that has been the tone for 2024. I think everybody Kat Williams started it and we like it's up. Everyone is choosing violence, everyone's choosing violence.

Speaker 1:

Speaking of Kat Williams, club Shea Shea did you watch Auntie Monique? So I watched some of it, because Club Shea Shea and he's three, two, three hour it's too much. That's what I'm like. Not even the Oprah Winfrey show was that long. Calm on, and that was real journalism. And what I know his whole thing is because I've never watched an episode until Kat Williams, but I've seen clips of it and I know, you know, people like to come to his show.

Speaker 1:

So my first thing was when I was watching Kat Williams was like he's not doing a really good job of you know, like asking questions. You keep repeating the same questions. I don't want to know about their childhood. I just don't. I'm like, come on, shannon, come on, give me something. But then, talking to people that follow him, like, well, that that's his thing. Like he says I'm not a Jonah Bad interview. Yes, yeah, he's like I just want you to come sit down, have some cognac and just chill and kick it, which is great. But however, I'm like, why do they have to be this long? Yeah, I don't know about that and I almost don't even fault Shannon for that. I fought the editor for that Because I think there's some stuff but and I see how it can get difficult because while his questions aren't that great, sometimes the responses are really really good or the thing like the banter and like they don't want to cut anything out and I like I get it but I but.

Speaker 1:

So, auntie Monique, I did watch some of it. She, her story, has never changed. It hasn't. She's always kept it how it was. So I'm glad somebody gave her a platform. Excuse me to, um, you know, you know, talk her shit. Yeah, basically pop her shit. And you know what.

Speaker 1:

I'm woman enough to say that I was one of those ones when the whole Netflix shit happened where I was just like Monique why do you think you should? Because when that happened Monique wasn't popping, no, she wasn't yeah. So I was just like 10 years, probably over 10 years, past the parkers, right, yeah, I would say like that was prime Monique. Yes, like prom, like her, just her, her comedy, exactly. So it's like you did precious, you're on your Oscar, like, oh, okay, and she was a serious actor, yeah, a fuzz, I mean.

Speaker 1:

What I do love about that time is that it led to the Childish Gambino Adidas commercials that I thought were so lovely, of her just being like come on, baby, that was see, I forgot all about that. But yeah, but when the thing, when she came out about boy kind of necklace, I'm like, oh, monique, girl, you ain't made me chuckle in many, many bones and many sundaes and this is putting out that heat. They are and it's so. I was one of the ones where I'm like, girl, take your coinage and do that special and stop it. But I see what she's saying now, as far as I think what, that's what she said, the the messenger and the time wasn't right to everybody to receive it. So I get it. But it wasn't nothing new, like we all knew about paid quality. It's just that when she said it's like girl, yeah, and the other comedy came out 50 years ago, it really did. But here's what I will say in cause I watched, not all of it, but I watched more of it than I had signed up to. I didn't find it. I found her entertaining. I don't know if I'm going to do it in her training, but I found Monique entertaining and remembering, like all the love that I have for Nikki Parker and who she is and all of that. It was interesting to me, though, because we actually just kind of saw Taraji doing the same thing that Monique did about Oprah, which is also like like grit your teeth emoji.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and I can't remember when it went, when it when it happened, but I've kind of been signed on Oprah for a minute now. I can't remember exactly when it happened, but I'm just like I don't know. Yeah, I'm in the same place. I can't quite put my well, what I can put my finger on is she has been Oprah Winfrey, the hero, this woman that black women should look up to and admire, for so long, and my mother was, is still an Oprah stand, stand down.

Speaker 1:

Like when I was a kid, the Oprah my mother used to be like record the Oprah Winfrey show on BHS, and then for a long time maybe not a long time, for a good chunk of like a formative period of my life my mother ran it at home daycare and Oprah would come on, and when it would be episodes about dating, violence or anything like. I remember like coming in from school or something and being like oh, you know, that was the thing. You come in, you do your homework, and my mom would be like put your homework off. You're gonna watch this episode open. Oh Cause it was. You know, right, don't get rude feed and don't let your boyfriend hit you. It was likelessness. Yeah, so, and I don't. She was a mother figure, she was a positive figure in my life.

Speaker 1:

So it's interesting to now be here dealing with the complications of that, yeah, and working at her, because I hate this. I deal with this at work a lot. This mentality that because I suffered, you must suffer. That is so backward to me and my mind. My job is to suffer, to pave the way so that the person behind me doesn't. Yeah, you make it better. Yeah, I completely agree with you on that. Like, I don't like the fact that our stories always have to start with getting it out the mud. Yes, struggle. And then I don't think that I say that all the time. If it was a dirt road before you, you should pave it. The people behind you should paint it. Right, we're building a highway one generation at a time. Oh, I love that.

Speaker 1:

So, while I'm understanding that Oprah is just passing down trauma that was handed to her Mm-hmm, it feels really bad for Oprah. Like cause it's Oprah, it's Oprah she's supposed to be. Like, like if anybody would listen to somebody Oprah, you're the top five. Like I want to look at Oprah and see Oprah doing things that are making the world a better place for black women, and not to say that Oprah isn't doing that Right. But if you think about it, in the last 20 years, what do we know? Oprah for Her magazine that she's on the cover of every month, every month, her garden that she grows and she eats from on a daily basis, on a daily basis, the old network, yeah, queen sugar, hands down, I'll give her that, I'll give her queen sugar. I don't know what she feels on there. Even if I think about Beyonce in the last 10 years, I can think of Be Good, like, yeah, I agree, I agree.

Speaker 1:

But I was really shocked when Tajie was saying everything that she was saying. I'm looking like anybody to put a movie together with all black cast. You would think if Oprah's name is on it, she's going to make sure Of all the people producing for Taraji to be asking for pay quality as Oprah sits at the top of it. Exactly, that feels yucky and it harkens back to when Monique was saying the same thing and just reaffirms what she's saying, right, and again, what we do appreciate about the club Shay Shay is that it does always seem to be the truth, right?

Speaker 1:

Monique really pointed out that everything Taraji said I was saying and I wasn't the right messenger People, they had already made me into a bad guy. And because we saw Taraji and when she said it broken, we'd rather see a black woman broken than a black woman advocating for herself on the behalf of her husband I was like, oh yeah, we all need to check ourselves on that. We all need to have a moment of internal reflection. Thank you, antique. Now, the only thing about this husband. Yeah, so we are.

Speaker 1:

I just now listen Sometimes, you, just now. I'm going to take the context out of it. Right, I'm not talking about having her husband, because I'm not going to sign up for that. I'm just saying I just released a whole episode, ok, praising Jay-Z for standing by his woman. Listen, so love it. I'm just trying to keep the through line. Ok, stay true to who I am. All right, ok, all right, good deal, good deal. Got it Tiptoed around that way. What's up, gang Tranisha here, and let me first start by thanking you for listening to the podcast. Speaker 1:

Okay, so we mental health is good, though. Yes, mental health is great. I am. I'm in a good space right now. I'm up every day and I'm just looking like, oh, I'm in a good mood today. Oh, I love that, waiting for the shooting to drop, cause I'm like it's something about to pop off. But you know, that's just how we be. But you know, yes, positive vibes, I'm doing really good. My just dearest friend over here, trenisha, has gotten me into this rumble boxing, cause I did say I want to start working out and, as a good friend that she is, she invited me. So that's started that up because, yeah, I mean, we even got up at eight o'clock this morning and we went and rumble look at that, Look at that On a Sunday, and I've been working all weekend. I said, oh, this was the Lord, honey, this was the Lord. I appreciate the support. All right, so mental health. We did the housekeeping. I said we're going to have some fun and then we can get down to business.

Speaker 1:

Okay, so time step for this episode. This episode is currently being recorded on February 11th, sunday, february 11th, at 522 PM. So we are about an hour, a little over an hour, away from kickoff of the Super Bowl and probably about three, maybe not even that long Two, ish, two and a half to three hours away from the Usher concert. The Usher concert, yeah, and that is what I'm here for, and I like football. But for me, super Bowl halftime is where it's at. It's been there for a long time, all the time.

Speaker 1:

So what are your predictions? So, for the halftime show, well, no, well, both. Well, I will say this I'm predicting a chief's win. Okay, I don't know if I'm predicting that, but that's what I'm going for with the chiefs. This is horrible. Who are they winning again? The 49ers, okay, I'm rooting for the chiefs, mainly because their quarterback is a black man, and that's really all it takes from me. Okay, so I'm going with them. That is the Taylor Swift team.

Speaker 1:

Shout out to my nail tech, charlie, who's from the Bay and is dying like really wanting the 49ers to win. And when I was getting my nails done earlier this week, he told me that Taylor Swift had already paid the refs off. So that's where he's at. So good luck to you, charlie. Okay, cause he was, he's not into it. Usher is getting two extra minutes at halftime. Yes, he should. He really should. Yes, which I'm going to put a pin in this because I found out he was getting the two extra minutes. It sent me into a spiral and made me think.

Speaker 1:

So I think Super Bowl halftime has been pretty good for, honestly, the last 10 years, so beyond 2012,. Cause, you know, they only teach us Roman numerals so we can know what the Super Bowl is, and none of us know Roman numerals still, but whatever. So we're going to have to use the calendar years, right? But the 2012 Super Bowl, that was Beyonce, new Orleans, I do believe. Was that one? The Saints one? No, that is not when the Saints won. That was when the blackout happened. Yeah, it was. I want to say that was a Colin Kaepernick Super Bowl. 49ers, ravens, maybe? Sure, I don't know. I'm really one that's there for the the city, it doesn't know I'm for it. I am there for the half time show. But I will say this I think about.

Speaker 1:

I watch the Rihanna Super Bowl half time from last year, probably at least one or two months, and I think about that half time performance probably once a week because it was so visually appealing. It was like she for real did that. And what's so crazy is is afterwards, harry was like I expected more. I'm like what? First of all? What exactly? You're just telling me that, first of all, you've never seen Rihanna live, ever You've never seen her live and you don't know what the hell you're talking about. I mean, that performance was everything. I mean, like, what else did you want? Like nonpregnant Rihanna with no clothes on, like twerking, because like that's really the only thing in that Super Bowl performance that Rihanna gives that she didn't get, exactly, exactly. That's why I was like y'all clearly have never seen a Rihanna performance.

Speaker 1:

And here's what I was saying. I've seen Rihanna live. The vocals were everything. Yes, because you know she hasn't really been drinking and smoking, because she's been and she says that. She says that when she's touring she's like listen y'all, I smoked in a long time because I want to tour, and then, you know, that's another reason why, when people be like we're on any other album, rihanna is saying kiss my ass. Ok, I'm a mother and I'm living my best life. Do you know what type of restrictions I got to be on? You know, it's a rumor that she's going on tour this year With what she's just going to do a welcome back tour. I don't care what. I'll be there, though, which she could do there though the Super Bowl, have time performance on tour, and I would be there, because she just gives what she gives.

Speaker 1:

I really love Rihanna. I'm a Rihanna stand. I'm the board of directors for the Navy, and I am, and she just, I, just. I want to be her Like. I want to be Rihanna. She seems like her life is fun. I want to date a fine ass nigga who loves being a dad. I just want to like.

Speaker 1:

This is the reason why I feel like, because touring is a lot, it's a lot, and you have to love touring. Hence why Beyonce will? Because she said it she loves touring, she loves performing. You know who doesn't love that shit, rihanna. That's what I'm saying. She likes making panties because they made her a billion dollar one. So listen, so I buy them both.

Speaker 1:

So that's one where people are like we need new music. Rihanna is like kiss, my. If I feel like it, maybe yeah, but I, I will be shocked. You want the music though we still want it. I mean, you don't give it. I don't think you drop it. Drop it, I'll be listening, because I just listened to Anti the other other week. So if you drop it, I was blessed and talk that. Talk on the way. That's a good work on Friday. Like it just all goes. If you drop it, I'm listening and if you go on tour, I'll be there, oh, front row or as close to it as I can get. But I just feel like she's just like I'm living my best life. So if I'll, I'll, I'll think about it, but if not, take this new savage, fenty Valentine's Day edition. Listen, the plush puddings. Keep those coming, baby girl. Keep them coming Quick, like as we do this, this Super Bowl memory, this walk down Super Bowl halftime lane.

Speaker 1:

I was watching. I texted you this earlier. I watched a bunch of Super Bowl halftime performances, a couple I want to call back to. Do you remember Bruno Mars? Wait, ok, bruno, are you talking about with Bruno, beyonce and no cold. That was Coldplay's halftime and it was Coldplay, bruno and Beyonce. But maybe like two years before that, two years after Beyonce, I believe, it was the 2014 Super Bowl. Bruno Mars was the headliner with the red chili peppers.

Speaker 1:

It was the last time that we saw Bruno Mars in his like Frankie Lyman and the teenagers drag before he moved into this what I call his James Brown drag, and I do love this James Brown drag. Bruno Tradition. It is Am I lying? And where lies told, because even in the Super Bowl performance he has on that he's got the bouffant. Yes, last time we publicly saw Bruno and the bouffant the reason why that's so funny because me watching Bruno Mars, I'm thinking like what is this Like, what is this style, like, what? I love it, it's amazing, but yeah, it's pretty amazing. Yeah, and I think he also lends a little like more Elvis in that earlier time too. Yes, but everything that we've gotten since that now I can't even think the 24 karat magic album, mm. Hmm, that is James. We are in the James Brown era of Mars. That is where he is living. Yes, that was also a really good one.

Speaker 1:

Another honorable mention Katy Perry, yes, even though, ok, what do they say she is? Is it avant garde? I wouldn't call her I think that's what they call her I call her acid drip. That's what she Now that I can get with, that I can get with, and I love Katy, I love Katy Perry. Let me shade her like this I've actually seen Katy Perry live and she brings such a really great production value.

Speaker 1:

She does, in a way, that makes me confused, because Katy Perry can sing, right, but the production she started out as a gospel artist, as an artist who can't sing, oh, so like that is a good take, but she can sing, yes, it's just so. It's like the, the Germanics, and the production drowns her out and they don't need to do that. They don't have to do that and her son they should. There was like that because it was like an acid trip, like everything that she does, just like her, like I guess her vision. Her is that acid trip, cartoony thing and I like it, I enjoy it. Yeah, but the production of it is so high that it feels like it's so much in this beautiful voice. Yes, it's so much, and that's what it's so much. But yes, I remember, because that's when she came out on that damn tiger. Yes, she came out on the tiger. That was also the the sharks, remember? The sharks were everywhere after that.

Speaker 1:

But you know what else happened in that survival performance? First of all, she sang I Kissed a Girl with Lenny Kravitz. Yes, she did. And she gave maybe I'm going to say three of her 12 minutes to Missy, miss Demeter Elliott. Oh, why can't I remember any of this? I feel so crappy. You can't remember it.

Speaker 1:

Because, katy Perry, it's not that she can't dance, she dances like Julia Styles from Save the Last Dance. She can dance, but she can't dance, right? So wait, are we saying Julia Styles can dance? She got a little bit of rhythm. Yes, she has rhythm.

Speaker 1:

Ok, so you know what, if we take it back to 10 things I hate about you? She's on the table dancing to Dr Dre. You remember that when she got hit in the head with the thing, that was a cute little one too. She can do choreography, this is what it is. She can do a choreography, a graft number, and she's going to give it to you. But when it comes to the freestyle baby, she only a little coaching, and we block out that Missy part of it because Katy Perry dancing next to Missy Elliott was the same as Katy Perry dancing next to the Migos on Saturday Night Live. Remember that? No, I think I completely put that in the back Because it was bad. Yeah, it was bad, it was really bad. Ok, yes, but it also led me to say now that we are giving 15 minutes to have times, missy Elliott. Missy Elliott needs to be a half time show performer. So, oh, yeah, and you know what, when I was thinking about because correct me if I'm wrong Originally this was supposed to be Lizzo's, I didn't know that.

Speaker 1:

Was it supposed to be? I mean, she's cute, well, she was very huge. And then the legal stuff started. Don't, because I read that and I'm just OK, we just yeah, but I, I'm pretty sure. But yes, originally this was supposed to be Lizzo's. When all of that stuff came out, they gave it to usher, which to me is crazy because he should have had it in the first place. Well, that's so, actually, just saw he did. They did a piece on him, cbs, and he said like, when he found out the Super Bowl was going to be in Vegas, he was like I want that Super Bowl. And so he extended his residency because, to be honest, the like real allure about or maybe not allure, but like the like thing that makes usher the right answer for Super Bowl in Vegas, is that usher has been crushing Vegas for the last few years. Crushing it because before usher, I know, celine had her residency for ever in Vegas.

Speaker 1:

Yes, and the biggest crook of them all, jlo, was there. What for a while, you know and notice, I left her Super Bowl out Because she didn't even get a full thing. She had to share what she cared. No, because why should I just go? Because why is she here? Why is she here, ike? Why is she here? Why is she here? Why is she here? But I see that lost my training. I'm sorry the resident sees. Yeah, yeah, cuz man, she, I know you so loved you.

Speaker 1:

When JLo first came out, I'm like, yes, I'm JLo's got some news. Now I'm like, girl, go sit down immediately and release being he looks sad and miserable. But no, keep him. Y'all just stay over there Both of them. But yeah, but what I was saying? Um, did Chris Brown do a residency? No, no, he had a residency at Dreas. Really, you can fact check me, but I'm pretty sure he had a residency at Dreas for a while. Really, they gave Christopher Brown a residency, yes, well then, miley Cyrus needs one's A-stat, she needs one.

Speaker 1:

But I'm saying all this to say is that Usher put being and having a Vegas residency back on the map, and what I love about it is is you can go there to see your favorite artist versus trying to, like fight for the Hunger Games the one time they come to your city every once in a, well, I can say, cause we live in Indianapolis once in a blue moon. But if they ever come, man, I wish I would show us love, but I know why, I know why I get it, I get it. Uh, we talking about going to see Usher in Detroit. Why Detroit? You know? I wish I could answer that question, okay, but I can't. Okay, you're not, you're not, you're not. Remember one of our cannabis? I'm sorry, cannabis is legal there, which is true.

Speaker 1:

I'll be on one of those tourist stops. Um, really quick, I'm going to One of them, but not Chicago. Yeah, I don't want to go to Chicago. Granted, the only thing that will make me go to Chicago is because it's the last stop on his tour. That's the only reason why I'm slightly entertaining going to Chicago, but if I do, it's going to be my second time seeing you. Like, I'm going to see him before then and I'm going to see him in Chicago, but really quickly.

Speaker 1:

So the people are saying that, well cause, this was a rumor back when I first opened that Miss Beyonce is going to be doing her Vegas residency at the spear. I heard this when they first opened. And then she's supposed to be with the commercial is yeah, and I heard that like she's in the like is contractual. Maybe that is what the commercial is Is to. Yeah, that's what they said. They were in contract negotiations to do the spear and who will be there? Beyonce, I'm going to be there. I'm going to be there. I was intrigued by you too. Who's little spear? And I'm not even. Yeah, it was nice. Yeah, all right.

Speaker 1:

So predictions or actually let's do this. What do you absolutely need to hear from usher's catalog tonight? Absolutely, give me, I need something. A couple from confession. Oh, I mean, he could do that whole set list Exactly. He can do the whole thing.

Speaker 1:

So the one thing that would just rip my heart out, my soul, would leave my body and I will be complete, is if Beyonce appears from the ground with bad girls. Come on, what this bad girl? Because so bad. You know, beyonce, giselle's knees do not work like that. That's why I said all of my friends Popping out of the ground for her, sure, she, even if she don't pop out of the ground, if they just do something really cute, because, let's be clear, beyonce is the original and always be the bad girl because that performance is.

Speaker 1:

I watched it. It was the fact that it was usher's performance and he spent the first 45 seconds of it in the back because as he should, because this is Beyonce's performance. She didn't sing, she didn't hum, she didn't, she didn't do it. I want to see me. I say throw her hips with a little freely skirt. Yes, so bad, me too that that would just send me. But Beyonce has given us so much this past year. Well, I think she's like y'all, y'all fine. Well, you know her homegirls gonna be there, right? Alicia Keys, oh, yeah. So get ready for no makeup and some piano.

Speaker 1:

I keep playing my boo in my head and I'm trying, but okay, I'm trying to see my boo. No-transcript, because Super Bowl gotta be, you know, we gotta be. I mean, they do about, they tend to do you know? Okay, I'll ballot. Okay, I either need less let's, let's. A key isn't a share of releasing a new song. I wish I could see Sidiya's face. I'm not gonna describe it, I want y'all to imagine it, because what y'all are imagining is correct. Oh, okay, but if we're, but if we're gonna get a ballot, I'm not voting for my boo in usher's catalog. Yes, give me a ballot. A better be superstar off of confessions, yeah, I'm. Do not give me. Oh, okay, this is really About to give my boo was a huge crossover hit.

Speaker 1:

It was Listen back when it came out, I was with everybody. All of that listen. I was here for it. All right, but do I want to be here for it for the Super Bowl? Okay, how many of usher's EDM tracks do you want in Super Bowl? So let's be clear. That's the reason why he got the extra two minutes. That's exactly why he has extra. That's why I got the extra to my, because I was watching something we're talking about.

Speaker 1:

What out of usher's catalog? Do white people know? I did it again. That's gonna be his opener. That's how it's gonna come. Oh, that's how he has to put all of them. He had to put oh, my god in there. He had to put yeah in there. Great, yes, oh. But if you go to any like, I really feel like you should close it with yeah. I feel like yeah should be his last song. Yeah, it's gotta be his big.
