Hi, everybody, I'm Brandon Sewell, owner of SEAL Pro Painting and the host of the Off the Ladder Podcast. We exist to help home service business owners learn so that they can lead well and ultimately live life off of the ladder. Welcome to another daily episode of the Off the Ladder Podcast. These are short, digestible episodes for you. 15 minutes or less, great for a drive to a job site or just something quick while you're working or on the drive home.

To give you a leadership tip or advice that you can use to get off the ladder. this is meant to be quick and actual, something that you can take, think on, and put to action. So let's jump into it. I've been reading from Leadership Promises for Every Day, a devotional by John Maxwell. today it says, a part for everyone. the scripture says, But David said, My brethren, you shall not do so.

with what the Lord has given us, who has preserved us and delivered into our hand the troop that came against us, for who will heed you in this matter? But as his part is who goes down to the battle, so shall his part be who stays by the supplies. They shall share alike. First Samuel thirty, twenty three through twenty four.

John Maxwell writes, When some wicked and worthless men suggested that those who stayed behind should receive none of the spoil, David resolved the conflict by declaring that since God had given them victory, even those who had protected the supplies had played a role and therefore should share equally in the plunder. Clearly, David valued partnership.

What did his act of partnership do for his leadership? It helped others see the contribution of every man's gift. Two, it reminded everyone that God was the true source of every good gift. Three, it promoted goodwill and potential allies. four. It enabled David to prepare for the future and make friends all over Israel. Five.

It developed a nationwide value of mutual benefit and good faith. I love this this devotional today because it's something that I believe really strongly in, and I think it's an area that a lot of business owners get wrong, especially when trying to get off the ladder. the reality is that your team is invaluable to you.

And well, they should be. and you should be hiring people who are more competent than you are. and the reality is that should not be a difficult task to do, to find someone that's more competent than you in the skill you know, look like like so I own a painting company, right? I'm not trying to be.

The know it all in my business. I'm not trying to be the one who has to have the answer for everything. I don't need to be the one who knows the best way to do something or make it the only way to do something. what I realize is that other people are just like me. There's nothing so special and spectacular about me.

That somebody couldn't do something better than me. and I think leadership is coming to a place where it's like, okay, I'm not you're not necessarily in a place of leadership to be the best at a particular skill or trade or to like know everything. you're in a place of leadership because you are able to find the gift and the value in other people.

Cultivate it, help them to realize their potential, and then help them to become the best that they can be and fulfill that potential. That's your role as a leader. that means you got to set aside your ego, your pride, and you have to say, Okay, how can I take this person and acknowledge the amazing gifts that they have and make sure that they're successful?

Branden Sewell (04:43.378)
now this shit talks about sharing, right? share the benefits of having a successful company. Pay your guys well and reward them for for being great at what they do. I talked to some of my friends who are in the trades or guys that come to me and they they'll I think it's

Another thing I'll say, it's really hard to pay other people what they're worth when you are so when you're prideful and egotistical about yourself. It's almost like you overvalue yourself. I love what Gary Vee said in a recent post that he made. he said he was running a $35 million business.

and was still paying himself forty thousand dollars. Now you might look at that and say, well, you know, he's not paying himself what he should, or you know, he deserves more. but the reality is that the

The mindset is let me invest back into my business and back into my people, have a long-term mindset, build something of incredible value, and then it will take care of me down the road. So it's like we get so short-sighted, and you know, we want to like get what's ours now, and we want to be the highest paid person in our organization. And maybe we have these goals of like, I have to make.

you know, six figures or more or whatever it is, but then you wonder why you can't afford to hire anybody or you can't have freedom. And I think at the end of the day, it it's like we're valuing the wrong thing. We're we're working against ourselves and we don't even realize it. And so I think what's important is if you want to build something that's truly valuable, you have to value people and you have to

Branden Sewell (06:58.178)
let go of your ego and your pride in how you view yourself. you have to be willing to share. Like that takes generosity, right? and I'm not saying that that's easy. You know, we we work hard, we're building these businesses, but I think if we have a legacy mindset, then we get beyond ourselves and we think, okay, how is this going to, you know, grow beyond me? And the reality is is if it's going to grow beyond you, then it's going to

require more than you involved in it. And so I think we have to make short-term sacrifices and maybe that's financially. maybe we don't pay ourselves a hundred thousand. Maybe we pay ourselves eighty or sixty or whatever. and and we take that money that we're saving and paying ourselves an owner salary and we pay somebody else and now we've brought somebody else in, we empower them, lead them, guide them.

And then we duplicate and we grow and then we can take on more business. And then, you know, your your look your slice of the pie grows as you grow your team. So it's like the the those slices are smaller, but it requires less of your time because you've delegated authority to other people. and you're getting more for for your time, right? you're you're working maybe the same amount or less.

and you're getting those little pay bumps and small little increments, right? It may not be huge, but it's small. And then, you know, that that should be the the the goal. And then to have exponential growth, not just addition in your business. so let that be something for you to think on. How can I share in the benefits of this?

Business and the the success of it with other people. And then how can I have a long-term mindset for growth and not limit myself to the here and now? anyway, so I'm gonna bring this episode to a close. I hope that gives you something to think about, gives you a strategy to work on. Maybe you need to reevaluate your personal life, your personal finances, what you're prioritizing, and and change your mindset on how you view.

Branden Sewell (09:22.69)
What it takes to be even more successful. And work on that. I have past episodes. If you want to go back, we talk about this quite often. But you've got to build your personal foundation in a way that allows you to have that kind of approach to business too. Again, hope you enjoyed this episode.
