Branden Sewell (00:01.204)
Good morning, everybody. my name is Brandon Sewell. I am the owner of Seal Pro Painting and the host of the Off the Ladder podcast. And we exist to help home service business owners learn so that they can lead well and ultimately live life off of the ladder. it is firmly my belief that getting off the ladder begins with leadership. you've got to invest in yourself. you have to build your foundation and
The rest goes from there. what we've been doing is these daily episodes, and I've been jumping into a devotional, daily devotional called Leadership Promises for Every Day by John Maxwell. these episodes are meant to be short, 15 minutes or less, so let's jump into this. it says Father knows best. the scripture for the day, if you walk in my statutes and keep my commandments.
and perform them, then I will give you rain in its season. The land shall yield its produce, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. I will walk among you and be your God, and you shall be my people. LIVITICUS twenty six, three through four and twelve. John Maxwell goes on to write, have you noticed that rules, regulations, and laws
Bring out the human tendency to ask, but why? Many of our problems arise from ignoring God's word when we don't think his instructions make sense. Moses tells us the rules and regulations God gave to his people not only kept them clean, made that holy before him, but they also protected them.
From discomfort, sickness, and untimely death. In some ways, the law can be seen as God solving a problem before it ever occurs. Moses reminds us that God always knows what is best for us and for our relationship with Him. This is a good reminder altogether when the principles of

of God's word. you know, we can see even in that scripture, not just about the rules and regulations as a means of like living our life, but that there's kind of like a a rule and a foundational law to how God operates. And that is that when we do what he is asking us to do, then blessing
will follow. we also see that there's like a that there's a sowing and reaping, right? when when we do what we're called to do, which is to take faith and then apply works to it, it yields fruit. that's kind of like what this is saying here that when you do
what God asks you to do, that He will give rain in its season and your land will produce and the trees will bear fruit. And so it's like same thing with your business. You know, run your business with godly principles. And I promise you your business will thrive. look to God's word for how to be a better business owner. His
word shares with you how you should live your life. I mean, you open up Proverbs and it's full of wisdom. Wisdom on, you know, every area of your life you can possibly think of. And so if you get rooted in God's word and you start to run your business like a a godly man or woman, man, the the blessings are just there.
And I I would say this too, let it be authentic, right? Don't don't read the word and then you know turn away from it and say, you know what? I'm just gonna do this my way. Or, you know, there's been times when doing business godly has been a sacrifice for me, meaning that it didn't always benefit me financially.
Branden Sewell (04:52.782)
maybe in the moment, right? In the moment I might have sacrificed financially, but in the long run, right? So sometimes we get short-sighted. It's like in this moment to do the right thing or to do things according to godly principles, I'm going to have to sacrifice financially, or maybe I'm going to lose money somehow to do the right thing. and in that moment, yes, there might be like a financial loss, but
The benefits that you reap long term for conducting yourself and your business with godly principles, it pays off in dividends in the long run down the road. I will say that, you know, one of my least favorite things that I see happen with Christian business owners is this
This notion that, hey, it it's business, right? So there's like this separation, like you'll you'll hear somebody say, well, it's just business. It's like, well, no, it's not just business. Just because it's business, it doesn't your your principles as a Christian should not get detached just because it's business. It's not like, well, we'll forget about our faith and you know, godliness.
because it's business and profit is at stake. I think that the it's the most challenging but most important time to be authentic in our faith, not when it's easy, right? Not when everything goes smoothly, but it's like how do you handle the challenges of your business, right? And the reality is is like every day.
There are challenges that we face as a business owner. And every day we have the opportunity to say, okay, how am I going to handle this in the most crislike manner? Because at the end of the day, like for me, what's most important is not the profit or the money, although that's like I need money, right? I need to be able to pay my employees. I need to be able to buy material. I need to be able to follow through on what we say for our customers.
Branden Sewell (07:17.048)
But at the end of the day, I have to be willing to take losses and do what's right to protect my testimony, right? That's what's important to me is like what is my what is my testimony at the end of this challenge or whatever I'm facing at the moment, will the whoever I'm dealing with, whether it's a customer, an employee, a vendor,
Whatever, will they be able to look at that situation and say, Wow, like the way he handled that was so different or uncommon and wow, when he says that he believes that he should do something this way, he really does it. Now, let me also go ahead and say I don't always get it right. I make mistakes, but at the end of the day, that is the most important thing to me. And
Sometimes that's challenging, right? But I can see the rewards of it over and over and over and over again in my business. And you know, at the end of the day, I think what what I want more than anything is for the the people that work for me, the customers that I have, the vendors that I have.
At the end of the day, I want more than anything for them to be able to look at my life and see Christ. and if I if they don't, or if I mess something up or make a mistake, I that weighs heavy on me because I'm like, okay, I don't want to risk somebody looking at my life and and
judging who God is based off of how I live, right? So I'm always trying to live above reproach and hold myself to a really high standard. but also like take the words of of the Bible and apply them to my life a in a very real and authentic way. and like I said, that's not always easy, but it is rewarding. So
Branden Sewell (09:40.405)
My encouragement for you is kind of evaluate your business, how you conduct business, get really real and honest with yourself and say, am I doing this in the best way possible? Am I honoring God in the decisions that I'm making? Am I honoring God and how I treat others? Am I honoring God with how I speak? Am I honoring God with how I
conduct myself in business. And if you can find those areas where maybe that was not that good, well, try to work on those areas. And I promise you, you'll see fruit in your business. And maybe in ways that you wouldn't think. And, you know, I don't want you to think that that's just financial, right? It could be that you attract a better team. It could be that you
create more trust with your team. It could be that you create more trust with your vendors. It could be that you maintain a better reputation as a business, which leads to more work and, you know, better employee retention and greater relationships with your vendors. And, you know, so that's that's the fruit, right, that comes from conducting yourself that way. And just remember, like,
Don't say it's just business. really hold yourself to a really high standard, and I promise you it'll pay off. Well, we're getting close on time, so I'm gonna bring this episode to a close. I hope you have enjoyed this episode. I hope that you've gotten something from it.
