My name is Brandon Sewell. I'm the owner of Seal Pro Painting and the host of the Off the Ladder podcast. And we exist to help home service business owners learn so that they can lead well and ultimately live life off of the ladder. Welcome to today's episode. if you're tuning in for the first time, this is a shorter episode that I do every day. on Wednesdays, I put out a longer episode.
episode so you can check those out. these episodes that are shorter daily episodes, they're meant to be just something quick that you can listen to on your drive to a job site, maybe while you're working or on your way home. Something really quick get you a quick leadership tip, something that'll give you something to think about and put into action right away. So it's not going to be super overwhelming. Just give you something quick that you can work on. So
I have been reading from a devotional called Leadership Promises for Every Day. it's a devotional by John Maxwell. so let's jump into this. Today's title is Give Up to Go Up. The scripture is This is the law of the Nazirite who vows to the Lord the offering for his separation.
And besides that, whatever else his hand is able to provide, according to the vow which he takes, so he must do according to the law of his separation. Numbers six twenty-one Excuse me, gotta love reading from Numbers. John Maxwell goes on to say through the vow of the Nazarite, God provided a way for both men and women to speak.
To specially consecrate themselves to the Lord for a special time and purpose. Leaders such as Samson and perhaps Samuel made this vow, committing to abstain from wine and strong drink, to leave their hair uncut, and to avoid contact with corpses. They gave up certain rites or options in order to live at a higher standard. In other words, they practiced.
Branden Sewell (02:22.988)
The law of sacrifice. They did not or they did so not to stand in judgment of others, but to discipline themselves against the temptations of the day. How can today's leaders apply the principle behind the Nazarite vow? It says discipline. Abstinence from wine slash strong drink. Application is self-control, discipline to prevent addiction.
uncut hair. and then an application as image. Refuse to allow fashion to lead you. a discipline. Avoid defilement from corpse. Application. Integrity. Stay pure and pursue a holy standard. so what I think ultimately we can get from this as a leader is I I think it's
Something that I've tried to apply to my life. It's not a matter of, is it, you know, wrong or, you know, are you gonna go to hell because you did this? It's more of a, hey, I'm doing this just because I'm a leader and I want to hold myself to a higher standard, right? So I'm going to try to get better in every way.
And you know, obviously there's areas where everybody, we all fall short. you know, there's there's things that we can all improve on and get better on. and so I think it's just always being ready to look at our lives and say, hey, what is an area of my life that's holding me back? And again, it's not like is it wrong to do that thing? It's just does it add value in the way that I want it to? And if you want to go from like one level
to another in your leadership, or what your your capacity for leadership, then you had to have these paradigm shifts shifts where you say, Hey, is this necessary? And if it's not, then do I really need it? you know, I talked about this in another episode, or maybe it wasn't at one of our episodes, maybe it was like just on social media or something. It's like I don't watch T V shows. I don't watch TV.
Branden Sewell (04:49.89)
I might watch a movie here and there with my kids or my wife. but I don't binge watch TV shows. I like I I've shared before, I would rather read or listen to a podcast. again, I'm not even like a huge fan of of let me take this back. It's not that I'm not a huge fan of music. I love music. But if I'm driving in my car, I would rather listen to a podcast or an audio book.
than listen to music because all music is gonna do is play in the background. My thoughts are going to race. I may not really get anything from that. I'm going to feed my emotions. but I'm not going to necessarily have an opportunity to learn or grow just from listening to music. sure it can be therapeutic, but I would rather listen to a book.
I'd rather listen to a podcast so that I can educate myself and get better. And again, it's not like music or watching TV shows is innately bad. It's just choosing that, hey, if I have this time and as a leader I want to grow and improve, would I rather listen to music or watch a TV show or would I rather invest in myself?
And so I think those are things that you have to choose to do when you're trying to grow in your leadership is choose to walk away from the things that aren't necessarily hurtful or like they're not like innately harming you, but is it helping you to progress and move forward and reach the fullness of your potential? And
Finding those areas of our lives is so key. Eliminate the unnecessary things. And so for you, maybe you're listening to this and you're like, man, why can't I get off the ladder? Or why can't I get past this area of concern or challenge in my business? Well, maybe you need to evaluate how you're spending your time. What are you?
Branden Sewell (07:09.198)
what are you taking your time to focus on and how are you investing in yourself and in your leadership? so that you can get better. And I think it also, I'll add this, it takes having humility, right? And ownership. You have to be willing to be wrong, be willing to say, Hey, I don't need this, be humble and you know, be honest with yourself and say, Hey, you know, like
I could get rid of this one thing in my life to dedicate more of my time and energy to getting better and to learning. So take a second, think. Think about the things that you maybe, I don't want to say waste your time, but maybe just for the sake of this, let's say it is a waste of your time. look at the areas where you're wasting your time.
And say, hey, am I willing to give that up to get to where I want to go in my business? All right. Think about that. I hope this episode made you think, challenge you, helped you. and just remember, you are going to have to shift your mindset and ship do some paradigm shifts to get to the next level. So think about that. if you enjoyed this episode or found it helpful, please like it, share it.
