Branden Sewell (00:01.246)
I'm Brandon Sewell, owner of Seal Pro Painting and the host of the Off the Ladder Podcast. And we exist to help home service business owners learn so that they can lead well and ultimately live life off of the ladder. thank you for joining into today's episode. This is a short episode, meant to be 15 minutes or less, something actionable that you can take away and apply in your business today.
one of the biggest things that I can recommend when you're listening to a podcast, reading a book, or just working on yourself, self-improvement, your leadership, and just working on building a better, stronger you, one of the best things that you can do is take action immediately. Implement what you're learning now. Don't wait when you hear it, when you get a good idea.
If something that I say or any podcast, not just me, but somebody else's podcast or a book that you read or whatever, if you get a good idea, the best time to take action is now. Don't put it off, don't wait, just start doing. Because that's really what separates you know success and things actually happening.
Is when you take action right away. The longer you wait, the less likely you are to implement your ideas or implement the things that you're learning, and then they just get put off, and then success gets put off. So act fast. we've been reading from Leadership Promises for Every Day by John Maxwell for these shorter episodes. it's a leadership devotional, so this just gives me
the framework for what we're going talk about. So let's jump into this. So today's topic or title is reading between the lines. The scripture is When the country is in chaos, everybody has a plan to fix it. But it takes a leader of real understanding to straighten things out. Proverbs 28 to the message.
Branden Sewell (02:20.449)
John Maxwell goes on to write, leadership intuition is often the factor that separates the greatest leaders from the merely good ones. Some people are born with great leadership intuition. Others have to work hard to develop and hone it. But both ways, it is a combination of natural ability and learned skill. The best way to describe this informed intuition is.
is an ability to discern intangible factors, understand them, and work with them to accomplish leadership goals. Successful leaders see every situation in terms of available resources, money, raw materials, technology, and people. They can sense people's hopes, fears, and concerns. And they can step back from the moment and see not only where they
and their people have gone, but also where they are heading. It's as if they can smell change in the wind. Leadership is more art than science. The principles of leadership are constant, but the application changes with every leader and every situation. That's why it requires intuition. Without it, you can get blindsided.
And that's one of the worst things that can happen to a leader. Man, I tell you what, it would be nice to just be one of those leaders who everything comes natural to, and to just have that automatic intuition. And I think I have some of that, but I have to invest in myself. I have to invest in my leadership, I have to learn.
some of what you have to navigate is we all have a background. We all have experiences that shape our lives, shape our decisions, and shape how we do things. One of the things that you have to do if you aspire to be a leader.
Branden Sewell (04:43.455)
Is you have to go through these paradigm shifts. And sometimes you have to take what you've been through, and you have to evaluate and say, okay, these experiences that I've had have created like neuropathways and ways for me to think about certain things. And then what I have to do is like evaluate and even sometimes deconstruct those.
Those thought processes and those those frameworks that we've built around ideas of processing certain situations as leaders. And some of our experiences create really great characteristics for leadership. And there are some of our experiences.
that actually detract or take away from our character or what we need as a leader to be effective and to fulfill our greatest potential.
Having the wisdom to step back and evaluate your life and evaluate those circumstances and evaluate those paradigms, having the wisdom to do that is critical in your future success. So if you're listening to this, what I would encourage you to do is get quiet.
Think back and try to think of the experiences in your life that have shaped the way that you think. Maybe it was how you perceived another leader. Maybe you were an employee at some point and you said, I'll never be that way, or maybe it was how you were raised and your parents and rules and things like that. Maybe it was mistakes that you made when you were younger and and how they shaped you, or how challenges or hardships or
Branden Sewell (06:51.669)
Maybe fears that actually came to to pass, traumas, tragedies, whatever. All of those different things shape us as leaders. They shape the way that we think and how we handle things. And so, like I said, get quiet, think about those things, write them down, journal, and and then challenge each one of them. Challenge like, hey, why why do I think this way? And is this something that is
Like, and then I think the other thing that's important too is like write down your values and what you and your mission and what you want to accomplish. Write those things down and then compare like your your mindset and your paradigm and say, like, okay, how are these things helping me to accomplish these set of values, this mission and these goals that I have in life? And if one of those areas is preventing you from
the the ultimate goal or success, you've got to like compare all of that, all those circumstances, all those traumas to your values. You've got to have a way to vet, if you will, those those paradigms that you have. And, you know, to challenge them and say, okay, is this like, is this something that I could change and get rid of and still fulfill my my my mission and my goals within my values? Or
If I change this paradigm, if I change the way I do this and the way I think about it, am I going to compromise on my values? Am I going to compromise on the mission? And I am I gonna compromise or fail at my goal if I change the way that I do this thing. And so I think it's like evaluating those areas of your life so that you can become a better leader. And if you're not working on yourself, if you're not building your foundation as a leader,
and investing in yourself and doing these things to to grow, then those things, those traumas, those circumstances, those challenges, those hardships, the way you were raised, you could have things holding you back and shaping your future without you even realizing it because you haven't taken the time to stop and to process it, to look at it, to challenge it. so that would be my encouragement to you.
Branden Sewell (09:19.869)
Sharpen that leadership and intuition by really starting to kind of get introspective with yourself and understand yourself and understand how it shapes you and how why you make the decisions you do and why you see things the way you do, why you have the perspective you do, why you respond or react in a certain way. And I think that'll help you to move forward as a leader and and
go to the next level and reach your potential. I hope this episode was helpful for you.
