Hi everybody, I'm Brandon Sewell. I am the owner of Seal Pro Painting and the host of the Off the Ladder podcast. And we exist to help home service business owners learn so that they can lead well and ultimately live life off of the ladder. If you're joining in for the first time, this is one of our short episodes that we do daily. and then every Wednesday we drop a longer episode. over the next couple weeks, we've got some guests.

that will be on the podcast. next week is gonna be John Kiefer with Kiefer's Junk Removal. some really great content there. So I would encourage you if you're listening today, make sure that you check back next Wednesday for that episode. a really good episode talking about the power of getting involved in your community for marketing. You also talk about some business challenges that we both faced and how we overcame them.

and some other fun stuff. So definitely check that out. If you've been following along in previous episodes, you'll know we are currently looking at Leadership Promises for Every Day by John Maxwell. so let's jump into today's topic which is going to be let's see

Branden Sewell (01:28.672)
Okay, title is Be a Good Follower First. It says the scripture of the day, 1 Samuel 26, 9, but David said to Abishai, Do not destroy him, for who can stretch out his hand against the Lord's anointed and be guiltless? John Maxwell goes on to write, leadership operates on the basis of trust.

Before David became king, he showed respect for the king who preceded him. Saul failed to practice this law and lost his kingdom. The Bible provides a vivid contrast between the leadership of Saul and David. Saul, he was self conscious from the beginning. David displayed God confidence from the beginning. Saul presumed the priestly office and

David didn't assume any right or privilege. Saul disobeyed God in the little things, David obeyed God in the little things. Saul lost integrity by covering his sin. David maintained integrity by respecting Saul. Saul failed to submit to God given authority. David consistently submitted to authority. Saul preoccupied with his own fame and

David desired to increase God's reputation. And so this is this is really good. So I think as a lesson in leadership here,

you know, the reality is is that like our for those who are under us, right, I think there should be I wanna I wanna share this too.

Branden Sewell (03:28.083)
Authority is not something that should be taken advantage of, right? submission to authority does not give leadership the right to abuse or manipulate those that they are leading. so I just want to make that really clear that I think the most powerful form of leadership is when, and I've been taught this or heard it.

Is that honor doesn't just flow from the bottom up, meaning like you as a leader shouldn't expect your the people that you're leading to just submit to you and do everything you say while you dishonor them, but expect them to honor you. I think that healthy leadership honors from the top down, meaning that you as a leader, you honor

those who are under your care, under your leadership, under your authority, and you honor them by honoring who they are as an individual. You honor them by you know, finding their gifts and their strengths and their skills and then helping them to shape those gifts, those skills and those abilities. And you don't just take advantage of and expect people to just submit to you and

you know, just run them into the ground and expect them to do everything that you say they should do just because you're the leader and that's what they have to do. I don't think that's healthy or effective leadership. Again, healthy and effective leadership is when honor flows not just from the bottom up but from the top down. So I think it's important that, you know, your your leaders that are under you

will learn from your leadership. And they should learn how to submit through your own example of humility, your own example of laying down your pride and your ego. And when you lead in that way, I think that those who are under you will have greater respect for you.

Branden Sewell (05:51.732)
And at you know, as we were talking about the five levels of leadership and some of the longer episodes we were doing, we'll get back to that in a couple weeks, but you know, in the five levels of of leadership, we had talked about in some of those Wednesday episodes that the let's see, the first level

of leadership is positional. So people just submit to you out of position. and then the second level is permission, right? I think it's just important to like read that book too. Understand those different those five levels of leadership. but anyway, yeah, I hope that's I hope you take something away from this today, this quick little conversation. Again, these episodes are just meant to give you a quick thought on leadership.

To help equip you. You know, I was just I had somebody I was interviewing for not next week's episode, but the following week, I was interviewing them today and we talked about that. That you know, when you listen to a podcast like this or you get a little nugget of wisdom, one of the best things that you can do is put it into practice fast. Take action on it fast, implement it fast. So

These shorter episodes are designed to give you quick things that you can put into action fast. Listen to this podcast daily. Take these little nuggets and every day put them into practice. And I promise, if you put these leadership principles into practice, if you learn from these and implement these leadership principles, you're gonna you're gonna see a difference in your business. because really I think at the highest level, leading off the ladder is about leadership.

There's a lot of other stuff to it, but it starts with leadership. So build that leadership foundation. Well, thank you guys so much for joining into today's episode. I hope you guys got something out of it. If you did, please share it with somebody else so that they can get some value from it as well. go back and check out past episodes. I hope that you'll come back for future episodes. and if you need any resources to run your business or to get off the ladder, check the show notes below. as always, I do get clicked.
