Branden Sewell (00:01.098)
I'm Brandon Sewell, owner of Seal Pro Painting, and the host of the Off the Ladder podcast. We exist to help home service business owners learn so that they can lead well and ultimately live life off of the ladder. Welcome to today's episode. This is one of our shorter episodes. they're going to be 15 minutes or less. And if this is your first time joining us, the whole point of these episodes are to be something quick that you can listen to.
On your drive into a job site, or maybe on your drive home, just something to give you some quick actionable advice that you can put into practice now. if you've been following along, I've been reading from Leadership Promises for Every Day by John Maxwell. Today's title is called Connect Before Calling. The scripture is when he had stopped speaking, he said to Simon.
Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch. And Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid, from now on you will catch men. So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed him. Luke five four ten through eleven. John Maxwell goes on to write Connection is absolutely critical if you want to influence people in a positive way.
When I think of connecting with people, I compare it to trains and what happens to them in a train yard. The cars sitting on the tracks have great value because they're loaded with cargo. They have a destination and they even have a route to follow. But they don't have a way of getting anywhere on their own. They have to hook up with a locomotive. Have you ever watched how a bunch of pieces form a working train?
It all begins with the locomotive. It switches itself to the same track as the car it's going to pick up. Then it backs up to the car, makes contact, and connects. Then it repeats the process until the cars are all hooked up and together they start moving toward their destination. A similar thing must happen before you are able to get people to go with you on any kind of journey. You have to find out where they are.
Branden Sewell (02:20.447)
Move toward them to make contact and connect with them. If you can do that successfully, you can take them to new heights in your relationship and in their development. This is really good. And you know, one of the things that I I think is really important with getting people to come along with you and building connection is
Counting the cost of leading somebody. And what I mean by that is that it's not going to be easy and it's going to take time. And it's going to require you to be long-suffering in some circumstances. And in order to, there is a process, right? It it's not like an instantaneous thing. I think we expect that people will join our organizations and
And they'll hear the mission, they'll hear the values, values, they'll hear the expectations, and then we just expect that they're just going to be like gung ho and join in and run with us right away. I think the reality is people are naturally going to test that out. They are going to test you. They are going to see like, hey, can I really trust this guy? Does he really care? Does
He really have my best interest in mine. And I can say that for myself. Like, you have to make investments into your people. And, you know, I've experienced you know, like in 2022 where I had a whole team walk away. and I had to do some reflecting on what I did as a leader to cause
when we hit challenges as a business for these people to feel like, hey, you we're not a part of that with you, and then just walk away, right? Whereas I have faced challenges since then, and now I have a team that has walked with me through the challenges. Right. And so I'm not gonna say that I'm a perfect leader, but when you have something like that happen or you face a challenge and your team rises to the occasion,
Branden Sewell (04:45.057)
That tells you, like, hey, you're doing something right. Because people aren't going to volunteer for challenges or suffering just for the heck of it, right? but when they are when they feel invested into and they feel like they can trust you and like you're somebody that they can follow even in the valley, right? then they will. But again.
That takes time. That takes a process. And so I think it's important to realize it's not easy. And if you want to build a team that is going to follow you and that you can lead somewhere and take them somewhere, you have to put the time, the energy, the effort, the work into making that happen. And if you make excuses for why it's not possible or why
your team doesn't follow you and shift blame and you don't look at yourself, well, there's your problem. It's you. And but when we really can solve these problems, it's when we look at ourselves as the leader and we make the changes that are necessary and we lead by example. And that makes all the difference in the world. Well, that's this episode for you. I'm gonna bring it to a wrap. I hope that was helpful for you. Hope it gave you something to think about in your leadership and connecting
with your team and leading them somewhere. If you enjoyed this episode, please share it with somebody. If you're listening on any major podcast platform, please rate and review the show.
