I'm Brandon Sewell, owner of Seal Pro Painting, and the host of the Off the Ladder Podcast. And we exist to help home service business owners learn so that they can lead well and ultimately live life off of the ladder. Welcome to today's show. if you're new to the Off the Ladder podcast, these are short episodes that I've been doing every other day except for Wednesdays. Wednesdays, I'm putting out a longer form podcast.

these episodes are just meant to be short, 15 minutes or less, and just give you some actionable advice for today. give you a takeaway, something that you can apply right now and isn't going to overwhelm you. And what I've been doing is reading from The Leadership Promises for Every Day by John Maxwell. this this devotional is

Based around leadership. if you know who John Maxwell is, he is a probably one of the biggest thought leaders on leadership in business in our generation. So let's go ahead and jump into today's topic. The title for today is a model to be followed.

The scripture is from Exodus thirty three eight and it says So it was whenever Moses went out to the tabernacle that all the people rose, and each man stood at his tent door and watched Moses until he had gone into the tabernacle. Again, Exodus thirty three eight. John Maxwell goes on to write Modelling provides the basis of all true leadership.

Leaders must set the example for their followers. The number one management principle in the world is this people do what people see. Moses demonstrated this truth. The people watched him as he spent time with God, interceding for them in intimate personal communion, and it changed them more than any sermon could have.

Branden Sewell (02:24.244)
If you want to enjoy an intimate relationship with God, as Moses did, you must practice what he did. One, separate yourself regularly, two, seek God with all your heart. Three, risk being watched and scrutinized. Four, learn to listen and obey God's voice. Enter covenant partnership with God. You know, this is really good. I I I think at the end of the day,

The example that we set is the one that people follow. It's not what we say, it's what we do. And I know I've heard it said that the greatest or the only sermon that many people will ever hear, because they may not go to church, is your life. So live your faith out loud. Be a great example. Man,

What a privilege it is to be a business owner and to have influence over people's lives. And at the end of the day, no matter how small or how big your business is, if you have people that rely on your leadership for their livelihood.

That is something that you should not take lightly. You should be proud of. you should carry that with a sense of responsibility, a responsibility to improve yourself, a responsibility to call yourself to a higher standard, a responsibility to go above and beyond what is expected,

And just an overall responsibility to provide for more than just yourself. the reality is you're not going to be perfect. You're not always going to get it right, you're not always gonna make all the best decisions. But people can tell when you are genuinely making an effort to strive to be better, and when you've just settled for being mediocre or settled for

Branden Sewell (04:48.438)
you know, second class results. strive to be the best that you can be. Strive to make it, you know, if you ask your you want your employees to better be better, you want them to change, live that example out loud in your own life. What do you need to change? What do you need to get better at? What do you need to get rid of? What do you need to be working on?

Because when you as the leader work on yourself, when you as the leader call yourself to a higher standard, as you as the leader make changes, you are showing and modeling for your employees what you are going to ask them to do. So if you aren't even willing to work on yourself, if you aren't even willing to get better and

Grow and change and get rid of things and strip things away that need to be stripped away in your life and build better habits and become better. If you're not even willing to do that, then why would you expect that from your employees? You have to model it first. And if you aren't willing to get real with yourself, take extreme ownership and own it and say, hey, this is

where I'm falling short. This is where I'm missing it. This is where I'm not leading well. This is where my personal life is struggling. This is where I need to get better. If you aren't modeling that, then don't expect it from your team. Don't expect them to get better. because at the end of the day, your team is going to either success succeed based on your leadership or fail based on your leadership. And

That's sometimes that's hard to re to just come to terms with. I mean, I've had teams fail. I've failed. but I I in those moments, I was like, hey, the only person to blame in this is me. The only person that's responsible for this is me. The only person who's a hundred percent accountable is me. I can't shift blame. I can't blame my team. I can't blame customers. I can't blame everybody else.

Branden Sewell (07:07.788)
I gotta look in the mirror and say, hey, this is your business. This is your responsibility, you're accountable, you are are the problem, not anyone or anything else. You. If I don't have the team that I want, my fault. If my team isn't doing what I want them to do, my fault. If my team isn't getting the results that I want them to get, my fault. If my customers are upset, my fault. If my customers

perceive that they were gonna get some type of value and then we didn't deliver that value, my fault. If my pricing is too low, my fault. if we make mistakes out in the field and things don't get done right, my fault. If we aren't prepared for some kind of challenge that we should have known is gonna come, my fault. I can't shift blame. I can't blame anybody else. I'm the leader. I am the owner and I have to take ownership.

And that's hard because in those moments you might want to say, like, well, if so and so wouldn't have done this, and if they would have, and that no, it's your fault. You have to own it. If you didn't have the system in place, the process in place, if you didn't hire right, if you chose that customer, if you hired that customer, if you didn't have the system and processes in place for how jobs get done and what expectations are.

All of these different things. If you didn't do that, then it's your fault. If people don't want to work for you, it's your fault. If you can't pay people what you should pay them, it's your fault. If your marketing isn't working, it's your fault. If your advertising isn't working, it's your fault. If you're getting negative reviews, it's your fault. Everything comes down to ownership and what you model is.

is what becomes the standard for your business. Hope that helps you today. I'm going to bring this episode to a close.
