I'm Brandon Sewell. I'm the owner of Seal Pro Painting and the host of the Off the Ladder Podcast. We exist to help home service business owners learn so that they can lead well and ultimately live life off of the ladder. Welcome to today's episode. This is a short daily episode. meant to give you something quick and actionable that you can put into practice in your business right away. these episodes are 15 minutes or less.
hopefully it just gives you something to think on on your drive to a job site or maybe on your drive home to help you with your leadership so that you can get off the ladder. I've been reading from a devotional called Leadership Promises for Every Day, a daily devotional by John Maxwell. today's topic is connection first. And this is the scripture. Exodus 19, 3 through 6. It says, And Moses went up to God.
And the Lord called him from the mountains, saying, Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel, You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagle's wings, and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to me, above all people. For the earth is mine, and you shall be to me.
A kingdom of priests and a holy nation. John Maxwell goes on to write Have you ever noticed how God introduced the Ten Commandments? Before he spoke his laws to the people in Exodus 20, he took time to remind them of three vital truths. One, the love he had for them, two, the victories he had won for them, and three, the future he planned for them.
God spoke about how he intended to bless Israel as his children, and he warned them of the boundaries to keep. Only then did he give them his commandments to obey. Do you see the genius of the consequence? I mean, sorry, do you see the genius of the sequence? Leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand. Before God demanded his people keep his rules, he reminded them of his relationship and blessings.

That gave them all the incentive they needed to follow through on their commitment. I think this is really good. you know, there's always the the saying that people
People aren't going what is the saying? It's a like people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. and I think it's just the reality that people want to know that you genuinely care about them before they're going to trust your leadership or trust what you're, you know, going to try and do or the direction that you're gonna try to move them in. And so I think it's important
That we realize that in trades businesses, the reality is is that it's very people centered. we're working a lot with people, or cl very closely with our employees and our customers. and the environment is not always conducive to building relationship because
There is a lot of stress involved in the process of doing a trades project. And you you know, you add in the factor that it's hard labor, you know, it's long hours, it can be kind of grueling, people are tired, diverse personalities, all of those circumstances can make it kind of hard to.
build relationship just because there's so many challenges that get introduced in those situations. And our human nature, I think, is to we don't want to confront those things. We try to avoid them. And so maybe in an effort to avoid those challenging environments or situations, we neglect relationships.
Branden Sewell (04:29.294)
And I think that I can personally say that I've experienced that. I'm already stressed enough as a business owner. I'm already carrying enough weight. And so in in an opportunity to you know, build relationship, I may, you know, put myself just in an in a environment where I'm not in proximity to
or close enough to my employees to build relationship because I'm already stressed. I'm not trying to get closer to that situation or that job or that that environment where I could get in proximity to build relationship. I'm not sure if that makes sense, but I think it's key that if we're gonna bridge that gap, we have to be willing to step into those uncomfortable situations to
get proximity to our employees to build relationship so they know we care so that we can invest in them and help them to move in the direction of the mission of our business to really create more success. And that doesn't happen until we create those opportunities for l relationship to be made. so that's my challenge for today. Look at your look at your team, look at your schedule
And look for opportunities where you're either avoiding building relationship or where there's opportunities to build relationship and take advantage of those, schedule those opportunities. make it a priority to invest into your people and show them how much you care and appreciate them. I hope you guys get something out of this episode. that's it for today.
