guys do it all the time. 00:03:45.759 --> 00:03:56.639 And so you'll find that, you know, as you go out to, I don't know, McDonald's or you go to Macy's or Home Depot or you go wherever you go, you'll hear somebody use one of those 257 Bible phrases. 00:03:56.800 --> 00:04:02.400 Now, if you want to have a lot of fun, what you do is you stop them and say, hey, do you know what Bible verse you just for the next several minutes, and I do that deliberately, uh, because you would expect me to say something good about the Bible, or Pastor Robert, Pastor Thomas. 00:05:11.920 --> 00:05:13.519 You expect us to say good things about the Bible. 00:05:13.680 --> 00:05:21.040 What you don't expect is that for 150 years in American history, it was the presidents of the United States who carried the as a nation without reckoning with the place the Bible has occupied in shaping the advances of the Republic. 00:07:42.480 --> 00:07:45.680 If America is moving forward, it's because we're following founding fathers. 00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:05.759 Franklin is one of the five least religious founding fathers. 00:08:05.839 --> 00:08:07.839 Now, Franklin's interesting for a number of reasons. 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:12.560 He is the first man in American history to call for the United States of America. 00:08:12.800 --> 00:08:16.319 Way back in 1754, he said, guys, let's not be 13 colonies. 00:08:16.399 --> 00:08:17.519 Let's be the United States. 00:08:17.680 --> 00:08:26.879 Well, they didn't buy into it back then, but 22 years later, he's one of 56 guys who signed the Declaration of Independence that started moving us toward becoming the United States. 00:08:26.959 --> 00:08:28.399 He's one of this 22 years. 00:08:28.639 --> 00:08:36.879 Seven years after that, he's one of only three guys who signs the peace treaty to end the American Revolution and secure America as an independent nation. 00:08:37.039 --> 00:08:39.840 Now we're getting a lot closer to being the United States. 00:08:39.919 --> 00:08:45.279 And four years later, he's sitting at the Constitutional Convention helping create the United States of America. 00:08:45.440 --> 00:08:48.399 He's dreamed about the oldest guy there. 00:08:53.200 --> 00:09:01.360 He's 81 years old, got the white hair, and 81 is not impressive today because, I mean, the average lifespan in America today is 80 years old. 00:09:01.440 --> 00:09:03.120 So he's 81, so what? 00:09:03.600 --> 00:09:10.000 The average lifespan when they signed the Constitution, the average lifespan in America was 33 years old. 00:09:10.559 --> 00:09:19.360 Which means that if you're a high school senior and you happen to be here this morning and you had been alive back then, you would have already had your midlife crisis. 00:09:19.679 plan, you had the Connecticut plan, the New Jersey plan. 00:09:38.960 --> 00:09:44.799 Of course, the guys from New Jersey didn't want the Connecticut plan, guys from Connecticut didn't want the this assembly, groping as it were in the dark to find political truth and scarce able to distinguish it when presented to us, how has it happened, sir, that we've not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of Lights to illuminate our understanding? 00:10:31.360 --> 00:10:38.559 He said, in the beginning of the contest with Great Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayer in this room for divine protection. 00:10:38.720 --> 00:10:42.799 And this is the room that 11 years earlier is where they signed the Declaration of Independence. 00:10:42.879 --> 00:10:44.960 And at that point in time, we did a lot of praying. 00:10:45.039 --> 00:10:52.639 As a matter of fact, you'll find that by 1815 there had been 1,400 government-issued calls to prayer in the least religious founding father knew the Bible well enough that he didn't have to tell everybody else he's quoting the Bible. 00:13:01.759 --> 00:13:05.360 See, that's the cultural difference known by previous generations that even when you take one of our least religious presidents, and by the way, let me give you the rest of the story on the Constitutional Convention. 00:13:17.360 --> 00:13:26.720 They they had this, you know, Franklin gives a speech, and according to the records of the convention, they then said, okay, let's kind of back away a bit, and they took three days off, kind of cooling off period. 00:13:26.879 --> 00:13:31.759 George Washington said in that period of time that they went to church and they listened to patriotic orations. 00:13:31.919 --> 00:13:36.720 So three days, all this fight and bickering now, we're going to take three days off, kind of cool off a little bit here. 00:13:36.879 --> 00:13:43.519 So they go to church, and while they're at church, not only do they listen to patriotic orations, but they have special prayer time. 00:13:43.919 --> 00:13:47.759 The Reverend William Rogers prayed over the Constitutional Convention. 00:13:47.919 --> 00:13:51.919 Now he's there in church, he's got the Constitutional Convention sitting in front of him right there in church. 00:13:52.080 --> 00:13:55.840 Everybody in Philadelphia knows this thing's falling apart because people are leaving town. 00:13:56.000 --> 00:14:03.120 And he's praying for them, and his prayer is not like what we might do today in a city council or it's thousands of handwritten documents, the Washington's and the Adams and Jefferson's and Madison's, etc. 00:14:12.559 --> 00:14:16.080 And I've got the prayer that he prayed over the Constitutional off and going to church and listening to patriotic orations and getting prayer, when they came back, delegates like Jonathan Dayton said the whole atmosphere had shifted. 00:14:36.159 --> 00:14:37.200 falling apart to this three days, they come back afterwards, there's a whole different atmosphere, and ten weeks later, they produce the most successful governing document in the history of the world. we're told, oh no, the Constitution is a secular document. 00:15:09.519 --> 00:15:14.639 Matter of fact, there's a book by two professors at Cornell University, and it's called the Godless is they have just told me that they are biblically illiterate. 00:15:25.840 --> 00:15:30.159 There are Bible verses all over it, but they wouldn't recognize a Bible verse if it bit them in the ankle.
