The Woman in the Mirror: What's Really Holding You Back?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
What if the only thing standing between you and the life you want... is the story you've been telling yourself?
In this heartfelt episode of Reclaim Your Inner Balance, Lisa Dorn explores the invisible beliefs that often keep us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and disconnected from the woman we're meant to become.
If you've ever looked in the mirror and focused on everything you thought needed to change, this conversation is for you.
Together, we'll uncover how old stories, self-doubt, and unrealistic expectations can quietly shape our lives—and how choosing a new story can become the first step toward lasting transformation.
In this episode, you'll discover:
• Why the story you believe about yourself matters more than your circumstances
• How to recognize limiting beliefs that may be holding you back
• The difference between being defined by your past and being refined by it
• Why self-compassion is more powerful than self-criticism
• A simple journaling exercise to help you begin rewriting your story
• A mirror challenge that will encourage you to see yourself through a new lens
You'll also hear one of Lisa's favorite quotes:
"You either walk inside your story and own it, or you stand outside your story and hustle for your worthiness."
If you're ready to stop striving for approval, let go of old labels, and step into the woman you're becoming, this episode will remind you that your past doesn't define you—your next choice does.
Remember...
You are not behind.
You are not broken.
You are becoming.
Keep releasing.
Keep rebalancing.
Keep reclaiming.
Keep renewing.
And never stop believing in the woman you see in the mirror.

Hello, my beautiful friends. Welcome back to Reclaim Your Inner Balance. I'm Lisa Dorn and I am so incredibly grateful that you are all here listening. Last week we spent some time with your future self. So if you don't know about that, go back and listen to that episode because it will give you great insight. So today we are going to discuss it further, right? Okay, so last week we spent time with your future self. We imagined the woman you are becoming. She was confident, she was peaceful, she was healthy, she had purpose, and she trusted herself. And I hope that the exercise that I gave you gave you hope. Most of the time, it's the story we've been believing about ourselves. And today, we're going to talk about that story. Have you ever looked in the mirror and immediately noticed everything that was wrong? Maybe you saw the extra weight, the wrinkles, the tired eyes, the gray hair. Maybe you looked past all the beautiful things about yourself and zoomed in on everything you wished you could change. Can I tell you something? The mirror isn't the problem. The story is. Because the two women can look into the exact same mirror and see completely different people. One woman sees failure, the other sees resilience. One sees imperfections, the other sees wisdom. One sees who's behind. The other sees someone who's just getting started. The reflection didn't change. The story is what changed. For years. The story sounded something like this. My story sounded something like this. I'm not enough. I should be further along. I've made too many mistakes. I lost too much time. Maybe you've said those words too, because I believed them for years. Especially the one, you're too old to start something new. Until one day I realized something. Just because I kept repeating that story, which is the story that someone else told me, that doesn't make it true. I think one of the greatest acts of courage is questioning the stories that we carried with ourselves for decades. The ones that other people gave us, the ones that we gave ourselves. Who told you that you weren't good enough? Who told you that you weren't enough? Who told you that you were not worthy? Who decided your worth wasn't tied to your productivity? Who convinced you that taking care of yourself was selfish? Who taught you that asking for help meant weakness? You see, sometimes we inherit stories that were never our story, and they were never ours to carry. Think about the seasons of your life, and I'm gonna think about the seasons of my life too while we talk about this. My divorce, losing both of my parents, several career changes, health challenges. There were moments when I would have been easy, it would have been so easy to believe that those experiences defined me. Because a lot of us sit and think, holy crap, what else could possibly help happen to me, right? What else could go wrong? What other challenges do I have to overcome in my life? And from that, it would have been so easy to allow those to define me, which one of them did for a while. But I've learned that they shouldn't. Because they they shouldn't, right? They refind me, and that's a big difference. There's a difference between defind me, which they were doing, to refind me. Pain can become your prison, or it could become your teacher. The choice is not always easy, but the choice is yours. And here's something I tell the woman that I coach. You can't hate yourself into becoming someone you love. Do you want me to repeat that? You can't hate yourself into becoming someone you love. Should I read it one more time? You can't hate yourself into becoming someone you love. You can't shame yourself into confidence, you can't criticize yourself into peace, and you can't punish yourself into health. Real transformations begin with compassion, including self-compassion, not perfection, because perfectionism isn't a good thing. That's in a whole nother episode. So before we begin changing the story, what we want to do first is become aware of it. Notice the thoughts that you repeat to yourself every single day. I'm too old, I always quit, I've never been disciplined, I'm just not confident. Would you say those things to someone you love? Probably not. So why are you saying them to yourself? And if you want to write them down, that is in a different episode, too, because you can keep track of those thoughts for 24 hours and you're gonna see a pattern. And we need to reframe those statements to yourself. So here's a little exercise. I want you to grab your journal and write this sentence at the top of the page. The story I've been believing is. Not to criticize yourself, not to judge yourself, just to look. Really look at yourself. Then say these three words out loud. I am becoming. That's it. Not I have arrived. Not I have it all together. Simply, I am becoming. Just those three words. I am becoming. Because you are. Every day, every choice, every step, every act of courage, you are becoming. So this week's challenge is simple. Catch yourself every time you speak negatively about yourself and pause. Replace that thought with one your future self would believe. It's not a perfect thought. It's a truthful one, though. For example, instead of I'm so behind, try, I'm growing at exactly the pace I need. Instead of I always fail, try, I'm learning what works for me. See? Small shifts. But they lead to big transformations. Big transformations. So I want to thank you for spending time with me today. Today's episode encouraged you. I think today's episode probably encouraged you. So please share it with a friend who needs the reminder that her story isn't finished. Just like your story isn't finished. My story isn't finished. And if you're already to write your story that you've been telling yourself, I'd love to walk alongside of you. Because I think you're ready to rewrite that story. Until next time, keep releasing, keep rebalancing, keep reclaiming, keep renewing. And remember, the woman in the mirror isn't someone to fix. She's someone to believe in. I'll see you guys next week.
