Thirumandhiram 579: How to attain inner stillness with the help of breath |
Where is Shiva(pure consciousness)?
According to Thirumandhiram, core energy resides below the navel about 12 finger-widths below belly button in-between the anus and urethra. This area is known as the Muladhara Chakra or Root Chakra, the seat of the supreme Kundalini Shakti. Normally the energy center in this Mooladhara represents Devi philosophy, the energy center in the Forehead center represents the Siva Philosophy.
Merging the core Shakthi, the Devi from the Mooladhara with the Shiva in forehead center is shown in various representations and ways of worship in the temples.
Rituals like 'Palli Seerththal' (divine rest at night) and 'Thiru Palli Ezhuchi' (divine awakening in the morning) represent this union of energy and consciousness. They point out that the external worship must also happen within, through self-awareness and wisdom (Jnana).
Line – 2:
Though there are various mantras l, after several research, it was found out that in this universe, the inward breath is "SHA", the external breath is "HA". This mantra is called "Hamsa" mantra meaning "I am That" — referring to the oneness of the self with the Divine. The inward breath travel with this body, this is termed as "Amirtha Vahini". This inward breath represent Shakthi Thathuva. Outward breath represents Shiva Thathuva. The nature of shiva is to burn. The air that goes inside as Oxygen, burns and comes out as carbon dioxide.
Line – 3 and 4:
In Pranayama, it is important to firstly breathe in through left nostril and then breathe out through right nostril.
The breath through the left nostril is known as Chandra Kalai , and through the right nostril, as Surya Kalai.
As you consciously breathe — "Saa" in through the left, "Haa" out through the right — the mind begins to follow the breath.
"Where the mind is focussed, there the breath travels."
As one practices channelising the breath with mind, the mind merges with breath, experiences pranashakthi and merges with the life force- Prana Shakthi travelling within and becomes still.
When the mind is restless, and when we are angry, breath becomes very unstable and also unable to breath. So when the mind is agitated, breath also becomes agitated. Also we start breathing faster and lose our energy.
Therefore by channelising the breath, mind becomes calm and prana Shakthi increases. At this stage with the help of prana Shakthi, mind can be directed. This prana Shakthi creates subtle vibration. This divine vibration is experienced as the sound Ha and Sha as found by our ancient yogi's and rishis.
When you become fully aware of this, the divine energy inside begins to naturally reveal itself.
