I- God: How can one understand the concept of God? |
What do the Vedas say about God?
They say that God does exist — not as a separate being, but as everything in existence. Think of a human being: it’s not just a head, hand, or foot alone, but the entire body together that makes a person. Similarly, we refer to the whole land from Kashmir to Kanyakumari as India — not just a part of it. In the same way, God is not something separate from the world. God is present everywhere and in everything, inseparably. God is the totality — the all-encompassing presence that exists in all things.
There is nothing that exists apart from God. That’s why, in the path of devotion, it’s said: “See everything as a form of God.” For a true devotee, everyone and everything appears as God.
A scientist, on the other hand, sees the universe as a collection of atoms.
A rationalist says that everything we perceive exists only in the mind of the observer.
But in the path of knowledge (Jnana), there is a deeper realization — That the one who sees, what is seen, and the act of seeing itself are all one and the same: God. This understanding is unique to the spiritual path of wisdom.
What do those who have attained self-realization actually see? They see that in everything they perceive — both inside and out — there is something fully present and pervading. *That* is God. So, this God who exists as everything also exists within *us*. That means *I too* am a part of that divine presence. Then where exactly am *I*? In what way do *I* exist? This is what the Vedas teach: Know the power that lies within you. Love yourself. To know the Self — that is true knowledge (Jnana).
Such profound truths from the Vedas were understood and shared by a great yogi who lived in ancient South Tamil Nadu. He received his education in a gurukulam (traditional school), listened to the words of his Guru with devotion, and deeply studied the philosophies of the body, the world, and the Divine. When his Guru told him, “That which is the source of this universe also exists within you,” he sought to realize that source within himself — and he did. Because of this deep realization, he came to be known as Thirumoolar, a great sage who truly understood the Self.
With the intention, “May the entire world experience the bliss I have realized,” the great sage Thirumoolar is said to have lived for 3,000 years, composing one verse each year. These 3,000 verses together form the Thirumandiram, a revered Tamil scripture, through which he shared his deep spiritual insights in the rich language of classical Tamil.
In the Thirumandiram, Thirumoolar beautifully emphasizes that the Divine, who is present everywhere, also resides within us. To help realize this truth, he systematically outlined the eight-fold path of Ashtanga Yoga, presenting it as a structured spiritual discipline.
