In the 12th Velvi discourse, Gurumahan explains how the sacred sound Om (Mantra), the control of breath (Vaasi), and the stilling of the mind lead to the state of Nirvana.

Where is Shiva? Shiva exists where the life-force exists. Where does the life-force exist? It exists in the Muladhara. When sages explain the philosophy of the Universe, they say that the all-powerful Divine energy wished to express itself. When that thought spread everywhere, it began to move. From that movement a sound arose. That sound is Om. Om has three parts: A, U, and M. When we chant Om continuously, we can discover its source.
The Thirumandiram also says that when we follow the inner sound, we can know the place of the Lord. If we follow a sound carefully, we can find the one who produces it. In the same way, the spoken word is the mind, and the unspoken word is Vaasi. Vaasi means breath. If we observe and follow the breath, we can understand who moves it and from where it operates.
For this reason, sages studied the mind through mantra, through the sound of Om, and through the breath. Some controlled the breath and practiced kumbhaka. Where the mind exists, the breath also exists. Where the mind does not exist, the breath also stops. When the mind becomes pure and steady, there is no need to chant mantras. When the mind becomes steady, there is no need to control the breath. Therefore, sages trained the mind to become one-pointed and controlled the breath to attain the Supreme Divine state.
In the time of the Siddhars, these practices were common. Today, many people cannot follow them fully. When people repeat mantras, they sometimes forget even the mantra they are chanting. Even a mantra given to improve memory may be forgotten and started again. In ancient times, Siddhars controlled their breath, turned inward, left household life, and went to forests to meditate.
Later the path of the Buddha appeared. A Buddha is one who sees the inner light within and realizes the light of the Atma. That state is called Nirvana. Nirvana means the state of nothingness. It is the state where a person removes the ego that says “I am the body,” “I am the mind,” and “I am the intellect.”
Look at the sky. When the sky has no clouds, it appears clear and open. In the same way, Nirvana is the clear state without deceit or impurity. When a person removes these three identifications, that state arises. To reach it, Buddhist monks practiced strict disciplines. They followed strict rules in food and trained the body to endure heat and hard work.
